I just want to make mention for women’s vocation and what Joe Biden has done to fund teacher programs and tuition assistance as well as parent teacher conference.

Ugene saltner along with Donna burr along with Wilks , has taken the time to make sure that the eight grade hall for beach combers is secured and there for the staff . Mrs. Dawn Bella I is the only teacher on the school ciriculum teaching History to educate the students , they graduate to their neighboring stem academies and they have no knowledge of history except Advanced civil war. Mrs. Dawn Bellack is a forgotten teacher and mostly coveted by students but in the reality - is not where she is supposed to be. A black HSBCU college as a professor and an intern at A war museum, Dawn bellack was the best 8 th grade history teacher,

This school is highly rated mainly for its academic performance, but it is undoubtedly the most racist school in Virginia Beach. My child has frequently faced comments about her skin color and hair, as well as troubling questions like how it feels to be a slave. She is well-mannered, enrolled in advanced classes, and has never been in trouble. Unfortunately, the ongoing racist remarks have significantly affected her self-esteem.

My child is no longer a student there, and I felt the need to review, bc administrators do not listen. This is an old school school. There are teachers who try to use fun and engaging lessons to teach their students, but much of the work they give is busy work and serves no purpose other than to have a grade to put in the gradebook.

The teachers are vastly inconsistent from class to class, and some make little sense at all as to how they grade work. Administrators haven’t seemed to care and have let the teachers do as they please. The only kids who are paid attention to are the athletes or the behavior problems. If your child is a well behaved, good kid, they’ll barely know your child’s name, or if they do, there’s very little to show for it. Communication from teachers is extremely lacking. The outliers for this are the Spanish teachers, who do a great job with communicating with parents. Otherwise, they do not reach out, and do not like it when parents contact them, and take it out on the kids. They are always right, no matter how wrong they are (like telling a student that they are weak or can’t do the work). The school has top ratings bc it pulls from schools that are affluent and have privileges that many schools do not. They have the highest number of gifted students next to ODS, the magnet school.
It isn’t the worst school, but it could be so much better, if they saw that some of their practices are outdated by decades.
As for special needs or any needs that need to be addressed, it is a fight to get the kids what they need. Twice exceptional students will struggle to receive services in advanced classes, as they do not service those classes. If requests are made with classes and schedules, they WILL NOT make changes, no matter how negatively the schedule or classes will affect the student. They can do better, but they don’t want to. If they could get past test scores and rankings, the whole school would benefit.

As a student at this school I can tell you that the people here at this school are down right rude and disrespectful. I can go into this school happy and leave this school for the day feeling upset! When I was in 6th grade I went to the guidance counselor because I was getting bullied, they didn't do anything about it, they said that they will be mature next year. THEY. WERE. WRONG! If anything it got worse! In 7th grade there was this girl (I'm not going to say her name) she kept on bullying me, saying that i'm a part of the boys because i hang out with boy most of the time. Sometimes it's hard finding friends without getting bullied for it.

I would not recommend this school! They allow substitutes to touch children in inappropriate spots, allow bullying of all kinds. They do not support the students. They do not believe students. They do not care about anything but the looks and academic numbers for their school. Most of the teachers were wonderful besides 2 for the past 3 years.

With so many student's roaming the halls it is impossible for the limited amount of teachers to help foster growth and independence. They are too busy yelling and policing bullies.

I struggled with both my sons being bullied in this school. The asst. Principal chalked both situations up as boys being boys.

We are a military family and I couldn't of been happier to leave this area! My two well mannered. well behaved soft spoken boys where bullied from day one. From being called racist terms to pushing, tripping, and stealing from them. The teachers and leaders at the school played it off as "boys being boys" and another said it was just a initiation that will settle down by next year. It didn't and now what use to be fun for the boys, moving to the next military town, is just terrifying.

My child was literally told at the end of last year to not worry about any school work for the next two years because COVID has just put humans in their place.

I have 2 children at this school currently. One in 8th and one in 6th. They are both thriving! One plays sports and one does not. There are so many activities and clubs for all students to be involved. They are both doing very well in advanced classes and love their teachers. I have no complaints about this school. Any issue we have had - no matter how small- have been handled quickly. Very impressed with the Principal and his strong leadership!

My daughter was having problems with bullying behavior by other students and teachers. She was having severe anxiety and depression as a result. Her guidance counselor, the school nurse and the principal were aware that she had needed urgent treatment for this, and the guidance counselor told her to come into the guidance office if she was feeling anxious or depressed. My daughter went to the guidance office between classes due to feeling anxious and depressed, and as a result was given detention. The guidance counselor and the principal knew where and why she went, and insisted on giving her the detention. I would not wish this school on my worst enemy. The lack of student support is unbelievable.

My daughter attends Great Neck Middle School and the leadership in this school is poor when it comes to policy and procedures being followed by administrative staff and bus drivers concerning bullying and the safety of the children.

Hello. I attended Great Neck Middle School this past school year. I love this school so much. I lived out of the country for a few years, so it was a bit difficult to adapt again, just like in any other school. At first, I didn't know anybody, but teachers welcomed me with open arms, students are very nice, too. I have found many new friends, which I am very thankful for. This was my last year in this amazing school, but I will miss it very much. There are many great after-school activities, I have not tried any out, but I have heard they are very nice. I really love this school.

Great School. I really like how each grade is split up into levels so the children are not being taught at the lowest common denominator level. Advanced children are able to excel and be challenged. I am a Realtor and know this is the most sought after school district for good reason. I read one review from a parent that complained they were not contacted when their child was experiencing trouble. First of all, they shouldn't have to, you the parent should be involved. If you are helping or checking homework, you would know, not to mention, the parent portal website that allows you to see all of your childs quiz and test scores. I also receive an email every day telling me what my childs homework is for the night. How much more can you ask for? It is a school, don't rely on it to raise your child for you! As for another comment stating not enough kids make the sports teams, I'm not sure that is a bad thing. It's a competition and kids need to learn they won't always win and life doesn't hand out participation awards.

My student is now in the 8th grade and has attended for two and half years. Great Neck Middle School is an excellent school with a staff that pushes students and guids them towards excellence as well as achieving individual goals. The sports activities are great, coaches are infuential and encouraging. Great learning enviroment. Since attending GNMS my student has recieved Honor Roll each grading period!

The new school is amazing. The kids just moved into a beautiful high tech school. The community is very affluent and sometime you can see it in the students. The teachers are compassionate and well educated. Education is a priority at this school and students are driven to perform. The only complaint I can say about the school is that since it is new the students have little freedom. There are more students then opportunity to participate in sports or other activities. We went to tryouts and there were more people cut than accepted. It appears the school could use more than one level of each team. BTW: We love it here!!!
