Please trust your child over the administration. Over-correcting is a common practice at this school. Appeal all suspensions and hold them accountable to the established standards. The administration will discipline your child according to the standards, but they often fail to follow those same standards themselves.

This school is just horrible! They don’t address situations between students and conflicts that go on in the school. So much harassment. 8th graders don’t even get a graduation ceremony, which they should because it’s a big milestone in their life. School policy on AVID is so stupid, the school is too greedy.

Administration is not helpful at all. Lack of communication with families when incidents happen at school.
Teachers are great though.

My child has been attending Salem Middle school from 2021 and has had a great time transitioning from living overseas. What I really like about this school is that there is a military counselor on staff who is very attentive and provides support for the military kids. My child has bonded well with peers and enjoys all of the advanced courses being offered. My child loves all of the teachers because they care for my child and provides instruction well. The security guards are strict yet has a great relationship with the students and I can tell the kids respect the guards because they care for the students and their well being. There are multiple security guards at the school, including a police officer who often patrols and there is an intercom before being let into the school so my child feels safe. The students are respectful of the teachers and staff, security and others. The school has many fun activities for the students such as school dances, sports events, and club & leadership activities. My child was part of chorus as an elective and was able to perform in various district chorus performances annd school performances and loves the experience being on stage! So far this has been one of the better school experiences and a great school for my child.

Some teachers were okay, but the experience could’ve been better.

If I knew then, what I know now I would not have moved into this school district. The academics and beautiful neighborhoods attracted us to the area, but had I known my daughter would become a victim I would of bypassed it!

My daughter had food thrown at her during lunch, then had civics with the same child by the way he's a boy and he's sitting directly behind her making rude comments in her ear. She attempted to tell the teacher, but the teacher brushed her off. After class he pushed her and she fought him back. Now she's on oss? They did nothing to protect her and this is not a first occurrence. I hate this school. Academic wise its amazing, but if you have a child being bullied its a nightmare!!!

Racism against non African-American students seems to be treated as no big deal and generally goes unpunished (and I know for a fact comments are made within earshot of coaches and teachers ). The hypocrisy and double standards are unacceptable. Racism is not ok by anyone. Also, seems to be more bullying that goes unchecked than there used to be.

do not go to this school. if u r thinking about sending your kid to this school, please do not. the education is good and everything but its good until you lose something valuable. the staff will not get up off their lazy butts to try to even find my phone that someone stole. don't get into a fight. if a kid beats you up, you get in trouble for "fighting". just trust me and take my word do not go to this school

I'm a grandmother of a sixth grader. I'm very unsatisfied with this school. It is the worst school to put your child in. The staff are heartless. Please don't send your child to this school.

Beyond expectations! Everyone says Middle school is rough. With one in 8th and one in 6th (boy and girl) I have to say has been nothing but great! The Core classes and elective teachers are wonderful. The teachers we have had since 6th grade have always been engaging and supportive to both my children. The guidance office is always there to answer my questions and assist my children. Im looking forward to my youngest attending, and my two currently attending to continue to grow!

As far as education i think SMS Virginia Beach is up to par. The problem is on the teachers who treats the kids unfairly. My daughter together with her friends have the same complaint on the same Six grade teacher . They said that she is mean and confronts students and ask them why everytime she receive an email from the parents. I think the district principal needs to address this issue because the kids cannot concentrate studying if they have fear in their minds.
