This school gets a 1/10, here is why:
I have noticed that our algebra teacher often gets upset with students for minor reasons, such as having their Chromebooks open, even when they are not using them. Additionally, the teacher tends to go off-topic during lessons, discussing unrelated personal stories instead of focusing on the subject matter. This has made it difficult for us to grasp the concepts being taught.
Moreover, we were given only four days to learn a new topic before being tested on it, which did not provide adequate time for preparation. Many students, including myself, felt unprepared for the Algebra 1 SOL exam due to the lack of proper instruction and review.
I have also observed that the teacher sometimes intervenes in students' private conversations instead of focusing on teaching. This has led to a lack of trust and respect between the students and the teacher. Despite my efforts to seek help from another teacher after school, I was assigned the same teacher again, even after multiple complaints from both my father and myself.
Furthermore, there are several issues within the school environment that need to be addressed. Students are selling "used" substances on the bus, and there is a significant bullying problem that goes unaddressed. The Rhodes Center, which is supposed to provide support for the more troubled kids, seems to be underutilized and ineffective.
Lastly, there is a special needs student in regular classes who is not receiving the appropriate support and discipline. They also get bullied by other classmates, which is not good for her and shouldn’t be in that situation, but I’m not the parent so.

I believe that our school has the potential to provide a better learning environment, but these issues need to be addressed promptly.

This school is terrible!!! They have a huge drug problem, the staff is very much aware of but do nothing about it. They have an even bigger bullying problem. There are fights on a daily basis. The administrative staff have attitudes with students and their parents. They talk bad about students right in the office in front of other students. The entire school environment is toxic and detrimental to students mental health.

Handley pride is genuine. JHHS is a unique high school with strong history and community. The students are encouraged to dress up on Monday to put their best foot forward for the week and Friday is a school spirit day with Handley gear. There is ongoing conversation about expectation, leadership and doing your best.

My son entered the school as a special ed student, the school staff reached out and was compliant with his particular learning plan. This support set him up for success. They did a good job.

We love it. Handley is more than a pretty face, it is a good school and provides great opportunities for the students. As is true in every case you get out of it what you put into it.

No complaints in our household. Homework does the job of reinforcing what went on in the classroom, teachers are receptive to questions and help when my teen asks for help/insight. Parents can view course progress online. Students can work to improve a grade, no surprises along the way. The goal is for the student to succeed.

My son comes home from school every day talking about his different teachers and the interesting classes. The staff is excellent and caring. The Latin instruction was unexpectedly awesome. The teacher Ms. Bostick is a strong advocate for inclusion, encouraging and interesting. She is one of many great teachers at the school.

There is no homework policy—teachers make up there own inconsistent policies in this school. There policies are very archaic and do not fall under best practices.

Teachers at this school do whatever they want. They are very good at catering to the wealthier elites. It’s well know if you live on the East side of Valley Avenue, don’t expect to be treated equally or respectfully.

This school treats students to with disabilities as though they are second-rate citizens. Again, teachers cater to those who are academically astute. Those who struggle get help as time permits, or they are coaxed to work after school or on weekends.

There is no common practice and many teachers are either will make students teach themselves through homework, or still make them teach themselves without assigning the needed homework.

The majority of teachers I have had have been very effective, but there are many teachers, especially those who focus on lower level courses that are not adequate.

As usual the school talks a big game having tons of slogans, but no one cares. The admin is very course and has no real respect for education and students themselves. I know of no administrator with a background in education, only sports and PE. In the halls there is constant racial and Classist profiling of Black, Latino and lower income students. The administration falls into the norms that uphold systems like the school to prison pipeline and don't show interest in keeping kids truly engaged in their education.

The administration gets very caught up in the shiny things they do for rich alumni while losing focus on actually providing an adequate education for all students. To illustrate this in 2018 around a million dollars were spent on getting new turf for football at the behest of Alumni, but the team has an abysmal record and the quality of education is much more important than our athletics. The guidance are far overworked, and could do with a few more staff to manage the student body. Finally, the student leadership organization "Student government Association" has no actual audibility to make meaningful change and gets embroiled in daft scandals that seem like they come from a reality TV show. Simply its a popularity contest that makes a lot of drama and achieves nothing. Separate organizations have been able to make meaningful strides, but school sponsored student leadership is severely lacking, and only students with mountains of initiative make it.

I'm a current Handley student and I love it there! Beautiful building and grounds, lots of great people, tons of AP courses as well as a variety of CTE courses are offered, intelligent teachers... The list goes on and on.

I graduated from John Handley in 2008. My high school career was full of personal issues; I went through a death of a close love one, teen pregnancy and raising a child, and my father passed in my senior year, then 7 months later my mother found out she had cancer and had to go through radiation and chemo tratment. The school was so supportive through it all. The staff cares about their students and will work with them until their goals are accomplished. I had issues about my classes and having enough credits to graduate and they worked it out all for me. The school is like a family. It's full of tradition and will instill pride and self confidence in you! There courses are hard but they make you earn your diploma and you can't have any shame ofr that. They only want the best for you.
