Wonderful, or wonderfully rigid? I’m still trying to figure it out. The school earns real praise for its rare and admirable emphasis on arts and literature—an anchor of intellectual seriousness that’s increasingly hard to find. There’s also a strong sense of multigenerational loyalty among families, which speaks to a deep-rooted community and shared values. But those values come wrapped in a top-down culture of discipline and rigor that can feel excessive. Quoting Aristotle’s “excellence is a habit,” the head of school enforces a system where even small infractions—like my child being sanctioned for not having a pencil—lead to redirections that replace study hall time with busy work. With the school assigning a significant volume of homework, losing that time becomes more than a minor inconvenience—it’s a meaningful burden. Teachers sometimes show quiet discomfort with the rigidity, but the posture is deliberate and firmly held. The school also tends to eschew textbooks, which hampers clarity and structure in subjects like science and math. There’s genuine intellectual value here, but little room for feedback or adjustment. For some families, the structure will be a perfect fit. For others, it may feel like a narrow road—well-paved, well-meaning, and exhausting.

Westminster provides a rigorous classical education with a deeply committed faculty and a strong arts program that fosters creativity alongside academic excellence. Its deep-rooted traditions have cultivated a loyal community, with many alumni returning as parents, teachers, or both. However, the school’s emphasis on structure verges on inflexibility, creating an environment that often feels remarkably rigid. While this discipline upholds high standards, it also allows little room for adaptability outside its established framework.

My son has been going to Westminster School for 2 years now and I cannot say enough great things about this school! The first thing to mention is the faculty and staff. They are all so dedicated, brilliant, passionate, knowledgeable and genuine. They take pride in doing their part every day to ensure to provide the students with the best learning environment and curriculum. Furthermore, they are always willing and ready to go the extra mile to help out in any situations. The way they adapted to the pandemic and found the way to offer an in-person leaning in a safe way when many schools were only on-line was truly impressive and really showed their commitment to the students and families. It is rare to see such work ethics in talented people these days, and to be able to interact with each other with mutual respect and curtesy, too much of which is sadly lost in today's world. Personally, I am particularly pleased to see the diversity in race, culture, religion and ethnicities at Westminster School. My husband, son and I are each of different race, religion and cultural background and we feel welcome, supported and loved. Lastly, Westminster School does not just have the high academic standards, they also have wonderful art, music and PE classes taught by teachers with remarkable qualifications. Hence you can rest assured that your child will have a well-rounded school experience. My son is not the smartest student in class, but he is learning a lot better than we expected and growing to be a happy and healthy young man. I come from a family of all elementary and middle school teachers, so I would like to think that I know a little about creating a great school. My husband and I are thoroughly impressed with Westminster School!!

World class instruction based on a challenging curriculum delivered by phenomenal teachers who care deeply about the well-being of our children. Hands down, there is no better school in the area. After extensive review of the schools located in the DC surrounding area, we choose Westminster five years ago and they have exceeded our expectations in every way since. As parents, the goal for our two boys was simple, prepare them to be productive, successful, and well-rounded citizens who are ready to meet the challenges that await them in a highly competitive and ever-changing world. Without fail, Westminister has and is doing this on par with the most prestigious schools in the US, Europe and Asia. The solid curriculum rooted in the classics is designed to build a firm academic foundation while simultaneously encouraging a love of learning. The loving atmosphere to which they receive this instruction ensure our boys receive, process and understand it far beyond the level they would receive it from other schools. They are exposed to not one, but multiple ways to solve problems and understand concepts, allowing them to problem solve on their own. Yes, the curriculum is rigorous, but so is it at the best schools, such as Ludgrove and Berkshire. The difference for us is that our boys receive this instruction from a teaching staff who love our boys as much as we do and staff who are as concerned about preparing our sons for the future as we are. With 5 years under our belt, we see how our boys have matured and grown as members of the school and community, while obtaining knowledge at an accelerated pace. We have entrusted the future of our sons to Westminister and have zero reservations about it. We know they will emerge from the school confident, intelligent, well-rounded, and prepared to face every challenge that awaits them in a highly competitive and unforgiving world. There is no doubt that Westminister will be the reason!!

This school does not know how to teach. It knows how to create robots who can stand in front of people and recite memorized lines. Everything this school does goes against what we know about good schools today. The children all are forced to stand up and recite "Good morning" to the teachers before each lesson as their appearance is critiqued. The children are also forced to read low-interest, whitewashed "classic" books, some of which are on public school banned lists. There is no value for thought, even in the highly praised "plays" are the students really getting into characters and understanding the words they are saying? Again, the focus is on memorizing lines for the plays, memorizing math formulas and facts, memorizing English quotes and memorizing vocabulary and spelling. There is no thinking happening at this school. There is no freedom to think, question, or truly understand concepts. Everything the teachers say is law that the students must agree with and memorize for the test. I sent my oldest here and regret it, because she is now timid, shy, and scared to make a mistake or get something wrong. She can say "Yes, Ma'am" with proper poise, she can copy what the teachers do on the board, she can memorize the lines she reads in books, but she cannot problem solve, create anything for herself, or have a normal teenage social life. I am so thankful that I did not send my youngest to this school.

Westminster School has done an outstanding job in dealing with the challenges from the Covid 19 pandemic. They have been in session since the first day of school in September 2020 and have a discipline program to keep students and teachers safe. They have been innovative in still giving the students innovative experience despite travel restrictions by having virtual field trips, class plays, etc.

Westminster is not just a typical K-8 school — it is an experience, one that shapes a child’s foundation from an early age to be accepting, diverse, respectful, compassionate, understanding, solution-seeking, and independent. It is quite rare to find a school that not only teaches kids a strong-rooted curriculum, but also places an emphasis on developing a child’s character and integrity at such young age. Westminster does just that — and as a result, it sends well rounded individuals into the world, that become outstanding contributors to society.
The thing that stands out the most in regards to Westminster is their overall attention to detail. From their staff, to their administration and leadership, every aspect of the school is so intentionally thought out for the benefit of the children. The have such an impressive and rigorous classical education program that is unparalleled and very hard to come by these days. They also have a robust arts program, giving kids the ability to express themselves through music, theatre, dance, art, literature, etc. To top it off, the community aspect at Westminster is so beautiful. It’s more than a school, it’s a family unit — a second home. I wish we had more programs and places like Westminster School in the world!

I had great teachers, although I definitely witnessed teachers whispering to each other about students during play practice, which is embarrassing as a child who doesn't have confidence in their acting abilities and non-professional!

As I became an older female student at Westminster, I often felt reprimanded for speaking out of tone - instead of being encouraged to find my voice and be confident in it, I felt like I had to remain "sweet and polite," which is how women have historically been expected to be. I always felt extremely ashamed/reprimanded when I got in trouble, even though that is a part of the learning process for children! I remember "fear" being a common part of my elementary education here. Throughout college I was reminded of the importance of non-conformity--and in speaking up for what you believe in--to create change and innovation. I believe that children should be treated the same, and that it is possible to do that while still enforcing discipline and authority. As a result, I would not send my child to this school.

Overall, felt like it laid a solid foundation for my writing skills. However, I lacked a lot of social skills when transitioning to a larger school and I do not think I was appropriately challenged to think critically or embrace my individuality. It's a little bit ridiculous to me that the education is rather Euro-centric and surrounds the "classics" while ignoring critical history of the U.S. and other populations around the globe. Even so, I suppose the theater aspect is a unique "niche" selling point; regardless, it was not for me.

The school has a wonderful resource program to provide students with extra support in a variety of areas such as reading, writing, handwriting, math, test prep, executive functioning, and ESL. The resource teacher uses an award winning program to assess each student's abilities and uses that assessment data to drive planning and create individualized instruction tailored to each student's unique needs. The resource program meets students where they are at and works with them until they are able to reach grade level expectations.

From PreK through 8th Grade character education is a dominant characteristic of Westminster School. Children are taught how to properly greet adults and adults work to ensure that children are speaking with formalities and full sentences instead of informal slang. Children are encouraged to be welcoming and compassionate to all as emphasized by the wonderful "Visitor for a Day" arrangement where prospective students can spend a day in a class at their grade level. Students are taught that every child and every adult in the building deserve compassion and respect. Integrity is also a focus point and taken very seriously. Teachers and school leaders teach students to do the right thing both in and out of the classroom. They create a warm and friendly environment for children to thrive not only as academic scholars in a classroom, but as responsible, respectful citizens in an ever-changing global society.

My experience at this school was delightful. I was captivated by all the talented and kindhearted children surrounding me daily. I loved watching all the impressive grade level theater performances. I felt appreciated with the warm greeting whenever I walked into a classroom. I liked giving the students academic challenges and seeing them rise to the expectations. Friends and family can't believe it when I say I was working on 4 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping with first graders, and I respond, it's the magic of Westminster School. I felt like I was truly making a difference in children's lives surrounded by a community of caring and supportive parents, teachers, and leaders.

Westminster has exceeded our expectations in every way. Our daughter has blossomed and has become self-motivated and the CEO of her own education. The growth we have seen in her is truly remarkable and the quality of the teaching and the vision of the school gets a great deal of the credit. We have zero complaints. In the Covid pandemic, the school's performance has also been nearly flawless. They pivoted to distance learning seamlessly while other schools flailed and failed. They delivered a challenging and accountable distance learning product and completed the curriculum. And for 2020-21 they have thoughtfully adapted to healthy protocols for a modified in-person experience - a commitment that proves they care far more for the whole-self health of their students more than schools that shirked the challenge and merely went back online when superior in-person learning was possible. We have been totally impressed with the way Westminster's leadership has communicated in the pandemic, and their decision-making matrices to protect and educate our daughter and her classmates.

I really wanted to like this school but we pulled our kids out after a few years. There has been a mass exodus of the school because of poor leadership. The tuition is HIGH for what you get and the Board needs to get involved to change the leadership.

The teachers, although strict, definitely are there to aid the students. What makes it even more effective is the fact that there are 'Help Days', where if students need that help, they will be able to attend after school sessions without having to feel hesitant about asking the teacher for extra time.

The leadership of the school is well balanced. The Headmaster is a person that values the ideals of 'excellence', and impresses that knowledge of trying one's best upon the students. I have a slight physical impairment, and one of the things about Westminster was that no one treated me differently. Often, that is the key to successfully making one feel comfortable. The fact that I was different, but was accepted nonetheless was a key point in boosting my self confidence.

As a alumni, I can now look back at the copious amount of work and effort that I have put in, and see how that has propelled me to succeed now. Transitioning from Westminster to High School was easier due to the rigor that I was accustomed to, and I was able to take advanced classes right off the bat. In fact, due to the classes I had taken at Westminster, I had already earned multiple high school credits, and was able to be on an Advanced Diploma path, including in Mathematics and Foreign Languages.

Our daughter was born with learning challenges, specifically learning processes like math. Additionally, she has a seizure disorder, where she may "check out" from some portion of a class. Teachers have used resource time and other opportunities to teach our daughter other ways of performing tasks where she struggles (like math), and last quarter she made the honor roll. Though grades are never our priority, we couldn't be more proud of her.

In short, her teachers are aware, responsive, and as accommodating as they can be without impacting the learning priorities for other students.

When we first started at Westminster, transferring from public school in the 1st grade, our student repeated first grade. When our student needed extra help, we were notified that she would be going to resources for help (unlike the public school where we had to wait nearly 6 months to have a meeting with the counselor). Teachers contact us directly when our student is struggling, and when she is excelling (which, thanks to Westminster, is more often than not).

As with any school, each teacher has their strengths and weaknesses, but our student loves each of her teachers and is excited about almost every subject because the teachers generally bring their passion on that subject to the classroom. The teaching team works well together and communicates with each other as well as with us the parents. We've never felt that our student was "lost" like she may have been in public school.

There are high expectations on students to be of strong moral character; to be honest, hard-working and respectful. Students greet teachers and parents by "Mr." or "Mrs.", looking them in the eye and speaking directly. When our student had a behavior issue, Teachers and Administration dealt with it directly and honestly, and appropriate for her age. The Headmaster dealt with our daughter, speaking about the consequences of her actions, using the event as an opportunity to learn from her mistakes, and finally calmed her down by listening to music, before sending her back to class.

Leadership at Westminster is clearly passionate about Westminster School. Most have been in place for a considerable amount of time and care about the children, as well as the school. They understand the classical education model and seek to emulate it, and are passionate about the arts (theater, music, PE, and art) as a fundamental part of development. Our rising 4th grader has homework most weeknights, but generally not more than an hour or less, generally self-directed. It's been a great way for us to see how well our student is learning, as well as identify any weak areas we might need to speak with the teachers about.

We have been beyond happy with our time at Westminster!

We actively sought out a school with the classical education model, and Westminster was by far the most appropriate for us. They follow the principles of the classical education model by teaching the grammar, theory and rhetoric phases of learning. Homework and repetition are a feature of the model, not a bug; and we fully expected that going in and understand it more now.

Our student is passionate about learning, and Westminster School, it's teachers and administrators have ensured her continued passion for learning. Each week our student comes home excited about learning or doing something new, whether it's the class play, Egypt day, a new book, field trips, music, or art. We continue to be impressed by the school and will send our other children to Westminster when the time comes.

Being a student at Westminster was not necessarily easy, but was a valuable experience that set me above the average student. The diverse curriculum paired with a multitude of extra curricular activities gives each student a one of a kind experience.

Students here are exposed to many subjects and experiences that many schools dont even think to incorporate in their system. From public speaking, to the classical books, and all the way to the field trips make the Westminster experience one of a kind

I was very involved in all aspects of my sons time at this school during the 9 years he attended. I rate my personal experience a 10+. This school has been instrumental in character building of my young adult son, and all of his friends from the class of 2014. I am most impressed that my child looks forward to having his own children have the good fortune of walking through the halls of Westminster School as young students themselves.

Exceptional! Our experience with our children was just amazing. We see our children excelling and confident in high school. Very happy that a school takes the time to teach cursive and doesn't rely on electronic devices for communicating. The out of classroom learning experience is impressive, with multiple field trips used to enhance the curriculum. Just love the work ethic the school teaches.

During my time, these included the drama department, enrichment classes, chorus, art, music, etc. Students at Westminster are held to a higher standard— a way of being, often referred to as the "Westminster Way."

The administrative staff at Westminster are experts in their field. Many of them have been at the school for years and during my time as a student there, they were always willing to help with any issue that surfaced. The Westminster community is very much like a family and the administration seems to be the glue that holds that family together. With over 40 years of experience, the headmaster especially cares about his Westminster family and whenever I've come back to visit, he remembers me and my family well, proving that the Westminster bond is lasting.

Up until third grade, I hated to read. I was behind most of my classmates academically. I would struggle to answer questions on all of my English tests. I would reach near panic mode whenever I was called on to read aloud to the class. When it became clear to my teachers that I was struggling, they worked on a solution and created the reading resource program. The reading specialists (who were also English teachers at Westminster) would come in early almost every day and stay late with me after school to work on my reading comprehension and fluency. They helped me for two years until I was not only back on track, but excelling. I moved up four grade levels during that time frame. Had it not been for those teachers who recognized that there was a problem and who helped me overcome my barriers, I would never have learned to love reading.

Many of my favorite teachers are the ones I had at Westminster. These teachers clearly recognize the importance of their job and rise to the occasion. Because of the small class sizes, I felt like they really got to know their students. When someone was struggling, they would work individually with that student to get them back on track. I always felt like I was genuinely cared about and many of the relationships that I built with those teachers have lasted to this day.

Homework is demanding, but it is because of Westminster's redirection system and emphasis on time management that I stayed organized and on top of my work in high school and college. Although it may have been challenging at the time, it set me up for success in the future. Additionally, teachers collaborated to ensure that we never had too much homework or studying to do. For example, if we had a math test one day, we would have less homework to do for English, in order for us to adequately prepare for that test.

I was placed into the lower math level in middle school because of one bad standardized style test, despite my grades overall during the year. They were unwilling to switch me despite my grades in the lower class, and it left me at a disadvantage when I was trying to take excelerated level math classes in high school since I was a step behind what I should have been.

In my year, we had great teachers. Unfortunately, the school has slowly been driving out every good teacher there is, and I do not believe kids there now experienced nearly the same level of education as I did. I find it odd the best teachers that were the most loved left, and there had to be a good reason for that. So what’s left are an excessive amount of teachers who give too much homework, don’t know what they’re doing and effectively make the students miserable based on my siblings knowledge. Sure, some good ones are there, but they’re very outnumbered.

The headmaster does not have the proper training to be in the position he is in. He was originally the school's bus driver, was personally mentored by the former headmistress, and then stepped into the role as headmaster after she died. It's overload, even for a so-called "top" private school. As former parents, my husband and I were also horrified to discover that many of the textbooks were so antiquated that they would have been considered "quaint" in the 1950s and would have bored even the most educated adult to tears.

A lot of schools can boast about class size or outstanding teachers or accelerated curriculum. Few, if any, can match Westminster School's dedication to all those attributes AND their high standards for character development and molding children into high performing and socially responsible members of society.

Does your child’s current school teach, encourage, and hold children and adults responsible for the practice of kindness, tolerance, respect, courtesy, organizational skills, work ethic, perseverance, integrity, accountability, enthusiasm, and joy in life’s possibilities? If not, then you need to look to Westminster. I’m sure given the choice, you would want your child taught and embraced in that environment in their most formative years, kindergarten through the 8th grade.

Our child is a graduate of Westminster and even though he has now graduated from college with an outstanding job, he credits Westminster every day for his success…every day!

My daughter is preparing to graduate from Westminster in June 2018 and my son is currently in the 5th grade. I am a parent to two Westminster graduates. If your concern in selecting a school for your child is finding a safe environment that they feel happy and comfortable in while learning, then you have found it. Both my daughter's, who are now young adults, refer to their Westminster years as a great experience that started in kindergarten where they found their best friends for life. Unfortunately Westminster School has lost two kindergarten teachers one after the other in the last six months. Whats going on? I was a believer in the school however now I am not s sure it is a good environment for my child. Next year I will be looking elsewhere.

Westminster School has high standards for students that are fostered in an environment catered towards a classical education. They believe students should be independent both academically and socially. On the outside it seems like a wonderful place to send children with kind and caring educators that believe in the schools mission and pushing children to achieve their ultimate best. However the reality is is that if your child is not a "high performing student," then he or she will fall behind and face academic difficulties. These hardships students would not otherwise face in a different academic environment. Children are taught to "fit the schools mold," if they don't then they are considered outcasts. The expectations for students are often unrealistic and developmentally inappropriate however the administration and dedicated staff members stand by it and will twist any information or situation to demonstrate that "their way is the right way." Teachers constantly put on a facade of "happiness," for parents in order to put forth a particular image and fight a decreasing student enrollment. The truth is the enrollment is down and quite frankly, there is a reason for it.

Sending our son to Westminster School was the best decision my husband and I made. He has thrived in a "classical education" setting. The school does everything it says: nurtures the child's innate abilities while truly caring about each student. Character and manners really matter throughout Westminster's hallways and classrooms. The program offers so much - reading and discussing classical literature, handwriting (which is taught in the early grades), daily PE class, foreign language and hands-on science. Coupled with an active theater department, music and high quality fine arts makes it an enriching experience. In the 5th - 8th grades, our son took great pride representing his school on the athletic field. Middle school JV/Varsity sports programs competing against other schools is not typically offered in local public schools or other private schools. School team sports was so meaningful with his classmates (and very different from local club sports). The academic program is well-rounded and demanding. We highly recommend Westminster School!

I cannot say enough good things about this school. My child came from public school, with poor study skills and non-existent note-taking skills. Since then, my child has flourished at Westminster School. The school teaches the whole child, from science to math, but also manners, interviewing skills, responsibility, pride in self, public speaking, languages. My child can launch into enthusiastic discussions about many classics, with passion and a deep understanding on the subject matter. I am a parent of Westminster graduates, as well as a proud grandparent of two current Westminster students. The wonderful academic pursuits at Westminster include sequential history, French beginning in kindergarten, Latin in 7th and 8th, public speaking in plays, performing in music programs, Physical Education daily, and multiple field trips. More important to the development of young people is the attitude of respect which permeates the entire school. My son has attended Westminster for K and 1st. We are extraordinarily pleased at the level of engagement the teachers have with my son and with us. The curriculum is excellent - advanced compared to the public school programs we examined, with a broad spectrum of study beyond math, science and language arts. My son loves art, music and French classes several times a week, and we particularly appreciate physical education classes daily. Field trips are a wonderful complement to the program. The lower school teachers achieve a smooth and efficient harmony, integrating the curriculum across ALL classes so the message is reinforced in many different ways. My favorite aspect is the annual play presented by each class where EACH student has a substantive role, including solo lines, chorus and sometimes solo singing, and choreographed dancing. You can see the confidence growing in every student - they clamor for opportunities to speak in front of the school and the head of school offers a variety throughout the year. I look forward to my daughters starting K next year and getting this great educational start - a love of learning in a respectful, tolerant and demanding environment.

Just finished up Greek Day in the fourth grade today. What a great and fun way to help the kids remember details of Greek history, not just memorize! One of the great supplements to the "book" education at Westminster is the creative experiences the teachers put together for their students that inspire and excite the imagination. Today they participated in chariot racing, discus and javelin throwing, ate Greek food, dressed as a character from Greek history, and painted Greek pottery. This follows Egyptian Day last year and Native American Day in second grade. History days join interactive field trips, physical challenges like Inner Quest, and a class play each year to become comfortable speaking in public. Westminster turns out well-rounded, thoughtful citizens and is truly a gem. My kids love going to school every day!

Westminster School holds high standards of conduct and academic excellence. It believes in allowing each child to rise to the challenge of meeting and exceeding expectations. It has a team of strong leadership to include the headmaster and wonderful, wonderful dedicated teachers and administration. We have a 1st grader and a pre-k (4) student attending the Griffin Academy of Westminster, and our experience has been beyond what we hoped for with both of them. They are each challenged academically and they each have art, music, French, and theatre performances that involve every child. What I love the most is their excitement and joy in going to school and in learning! I know it will get harder as we progress through the grades, but nothing easy is worth doing. Wtih added focus on manners, civility, comraderie, and trying their best, this school outshines so many other private schools in my opinion. It has so many graduates working for the school as teachers and such longstanding traditions of value, we couldn't be happier with our decision. We look forward to our years ahead and our future Westminster graduates!

Westminster is as good a school as I could ever have hoped and dreamed to find for my children. Its academics are advanced and its teachers are enthusiastic, caring, and well-versed in their subject matter. The policies may be stricter than at other schools I have encountered, but they are extremely fair and my children are thriving in such a developmentally and academically stimulating environment. The challenging classroom structure is balanced by the many body and soul activities. At Westminster, the children have athletics every day and it places a great value on the performing and visual arts as well. I am confident each day I drop my children off for school that Westminster is helping them grow not only intellectually, but ultimately preparing them take their place as citizens of the world. If you are the type of parent who appreciates firm, but compassionate guidance and who wants your child to learn that the point of doing anything is not necessarily the outcome, but rather the work that has gone into it the process of striving to attain a goal, the journey itself as it were - then Westminster is the place for your family.

I am the parent of two very different young men. Westminster School meets the different needs of the boys beautifully. The school sets high expectations of the students in all areas. It is always exciting to see my boys rise to meet these expectations. My older son needs constant challenge and the school provides it. He is confident and thinks he is ready to conquer the world. He is learning important foundations of the value of strong writing, organization, and responsibility. My younger son has confidence issues and is shy - never wanting to be in the limelight or singled-out for anything. The school has worked wonders to bring him out of his shell. In addition, he is learning valuable skills in getting organized. He has struggled with this and his teachers have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help him hone this important skill. The school is not for everyone, but if you are looking for rigorous academics, and an environment where personal responsibility, kindness, respect, and being able to THINK are valued, I STRONGLY encourage you to take a look at the school. It is great value for the tuition.

As a parent of a former student of Westminster I do not recommend Westminster for a multitude of reasons. Mainly the school is about one thing and one thing only Shakespeare theatre. However if you do decide to attend I recommend strongly the first year you guard your child's emotional levels as they will surely be tested.

I would give this school all the stars in the Universe if I could. Westminster is the best thing that has ever happened to my daughter and my family in general. This is our second and, unfortunately, the last year at Westminster and I only have two regrets that this school does not last until 12th grade and that I did not find it sooner. We love everything about Westminster: strong academics, incredible teachers who know children better than their own parents do and bring out the best in each and every one of them, students life beyond academics a fascinating journey with talent shows, class plays, field trips, school dances, dinners with the Headmaster just to name a few. It is truly amazing how much time, energy and soul the Headmaster Mr. Glover, and his deputy Ms. Glazier invest in children in an effort to turn them into highly educated, confident, well-rounded individuals, to teach them all the important life skills and, most importantly, to celebrate the beauty of life. My daughter joined the school in the 5th grade, and my only comment would be, why didn't we move to Westminster earlier. The school's headmaster and teachers truly inspire the children to be the best that they can be. The teachers are the very best and the curriculum is very traditional. My daughter has exceled and become so interested in school since joining. They have even shown us talents we did not know she had. There is a very strong academic focus, and they have high expectations of the children, This is mixed with school plays, fun field trips, a love for the classics and other fun activities. There is a true sense of warmth when you are in the school and they make it their mission to know each child individually and bring out their strengths. The Westminster children have a lot of confidence and poise, that the school as helped them to acquire. Westminster has made a really difference for my child. Also, please don't think the negative reviews are just because it is "strict" and "challenging". It is the mind-games Admin. engages in, and the refusal to allow any forum for question, that ultimately makes people leave with a bitter taste in their mouth. (The meeting with parents by grade is set up to run out the clock so there's no time for questions!) And, fyi - the 45-min after-school detentions (which also mean missing the bus and must pick up your child, hard for working parents) are for *every* infraction; e.g. missing pencil - can't borrow from your neighbor. Several times, over half a class didn't understand an instruction - teacher, if you're holding half your class in detention, maybe it was your instructions that were off base? The strikes are the extra-bad ones, three strikes and you get Saturday detention, but that is of course much more rare.

My daughter graduated in 2012 after eight years at this school. She has just been admitted to Mary Baldwin College at age 14 to study Renaissance literature (which includes English Renaissance theater performance) and will minor in French. Westminster gave her an excellent background in French, Latin, math, history (both European and American), English literature and a very refined sense of English grammar: a claim supported by her SAT scores (taken in the middle of 8th grade she scored far better than most high school students planning to enter college). She was admitted to one of the most elite high schools in Fairfax, but personally assessed that it would not provide the intellectual stimulation she craves. My daughter is not a genius, she simply has an intense desire to learn. Westminster completely satisfied that desire for eight years by keeping her with great books, great teachers and a real sense of intellectual accomplishment. We love, and deeply respect the headmaster, who takes a serious interest in the development of each child.

Working here was a nightmare. The turn-over rate is high and staff operate within a ticking time bomb of stress. Ask how many of the staff are licensed by the state (or any other state) to teach OR ask how continued development is fostered. Besides a yearly workshop, staff are not encouraged to grow, compete, or develop professionally. In fact, many are "not asked back" for doing just that. Look into how the "reading specialists" are trained and you might be surprised. Ask how ofter the teachers are evaluated, or (even more rarely - as in NEVER) the administration is evaluated. There is no room for constructive concern in this institution. Once you learn the 6 degrees of seperation that connect all the long-timers, you will be less impressed with the Italian tile in the bathrooms and the green blazers.

I was very disappointed in the head staff at Westminster. They are extremely rude. The focus is on discipline, but it's over the top. I was reprimanded twice and I'm an adult with good manners. The first was for having "inappropriate" discussion at lunch and the second was for answering a child's question about my hand. Apparently, I wasn't suppose to have any interaction with the children while standing in a line. I want to find a warm, welcoming school with a strong academics. I don't need to place my child or money into a school that reprimands me or crushes my child's ego. The discipline is very harsh and I imagine is akin to a 19th century orphanage run by strict nuns or a bootcamp for children. The arts, which is their other focus, lacks because art and creativity don't fit neatly into a disciplined box. I can tell you from experience the "art" is just a throw in to make their school appear solid. It's nothing you can't find at another school. There were a lot of bad reviews before. They seem to have been taken down and replaced by a plethora of good ones. While attending Westminster we were sent several emails encouraging people to write good reviews.
