January 6, 2022 our 3 year old was not being watched by staff and was found on the side of Rt. 522. The administration has tried to sweep this under the rug for months, neglecting to acknowledge the harm and trauma this has caused our family. I would NEVER recommend this school to anyone! The curriculum might be great, but they DO NOT care about their students or families.

We came to WCDS after a year and a half of homeschooling. We previously left the public school due to a lack of challenging curriculum. I was unable to keep up a full time job and homeschool 2 children (one middle schooler and one 1st grader). I had looked at WCDS previously but was put off by the distance from my home to the nearest bus stop. But the stars aligned and we moved closer. I reached out, we toured, and enrolled within 3 days. My girls were adamant they wanted to go to THIS school. We are about to start our second year and could not be happier!! WCDS is really a community and a family. Every teacher and staff truly love these kids. The veteran patents are so helpful and welcomed us with open arms. The kids are all very fond of one another. The oldest kids are a big help with the littlest students. At sporting events, academic events, talent events every child cheers for his or her fellow owls. One such even that stand out in my mind is the annual talent show. This was the first event of this kind we attended so I didn't know what to expect. I had attended many events in my school years as well as my daughter's school years. There's typically laughing or heckling of students that other's may not feel are so talented. Not these kids! Applause and cheers for EVERY SINGLE performance. There were huge group congratulatory hugs. I have never experienced this kind of support and comradery from a group of adults much less children. This is the best place for our family. We have actually had withdrawals from the WCDS community over the summer and are looking forward to be back! If you are looking for a small school with a challenging curriculum and plenty of opportunity to travel and engage in new experiences then WCDS is for you!

I urge you to seek opinions from those who are at this school and those who had decided to depart (and there are many), especially mid-year. It takes courage to post negative experience online, but because it did happen to us and others whom we know, I suggest you look through the veil.
My overall opinion of the school is that it is a business first and foremost. You will feel like you are being milked for money every step of the way. Not only is the tuition the highest in the area, but then there are constant requests for school supplies “donations”, uniforms, projects that you have to fund, fundraisers, etc. The school is very good at taking money but not refunding it. Wellbeing of a child and family engagement comes second to that. The idea is to take your child and put them in a box, not welcoming family engagement. Your opinion is not taken into consideration. Yes, you will hear what you want to hear but actions are completely different. My child was only 3 years of age and she began to struggle with tantrums and tears not wanting to go to school. I could hardly recognize her. She could not verbalize her experience yet, and the teacher has poor and inconsistent communication flow, so I was left to figure things out for myself. My child’s frustration level became progressively worse. This was a loaded issue that had to do with an inexperienced overwhelmed young teacher who did not have the bravery to ask for support from the school; superiors at the school blamed a young child instead of taking responsibility for things they were doing to enable the issue; observation was not allowed; head of the school (no heart or compassion, just a lawyer driven by greed) did not ask a single question about our experience at the school and instead threatened to sue if we did not pay the remainder of the tuition and bus fees, essentially services we did not intend to use after departure. His immediate tone was threatening, without ever having a conversation prior to this. Not professional at all. I was shocked and deeply disappointed. Of course, this type of attitude sets the tone for the school where everything is driven by fear. So you have to ask yourself, is this what you want for your child and for your family?
From other parents I have heard stories of bullying, clicks, threats, unkind behavior. We were at this school for about 5 months and I would not wish that on anyone. My suggestion is to read your contract carefully.

Not a good experience - we had to pull our kid out due to general incompetence. The guy they hired a few years ago to run the school is a lawyer, if that tells you anything.

I am extremely happy at WCDS. I started going to WCDS in 5th grade and I have been in love ever since. My old school had not been challenging enough and I was being bullied. At WCDS all of that changes. The classes are challenging for all levels of learning and I feel like I am in a community of people who do nothing but support you. I am so grateful for all of the staff members who truly dedicate time and energy to making sure the school is an all-around amazing experience. I get one on one time with each of my teachers and that helps me understand the material so much better. Most students are extremely friendly and supportive, but no matter where you go there will always be those couple of people that make you remember you don't live in a utopian society. The homework amount I think is completely reasonable considering these aren't easy classes and you need a lot of practice to really let the information sink in. Usually, I have about 1 hour of homework every night, except when there is some sort of project due. I personally work fairly fast just so you can reference. WCDS does a wonderful job of preparing its students for college, and adult life. They really help everyone find who they are and who they aspire to be. The WCDS community is very unified and everyone is heard and validated, but that doesn't mean we don't work hard and aren't competitive. WCDS excepts all people and their differences, in fact, we thrive off of originality and differences. WCDS does an excellent job of helping students with different ways of learning and is adaptable to many possibilities and necessities. I have overall enjoyed my experience at WCDS and look forward to my time at WCDS in the future.

We are COVID Refugees - starting at Wakefield Country as they were the only school brave enough to offer in-person learning during the 2020-2021 academic year. Our kids were 3rd and 5th grade.

Their dedication to student learning and experience is well above anything we could have hoped for. They took every reasonable measure to ensure the health of the teachers and students while refusing to compromise on quality of education. They had NO issues last year and my kids absolutely blossomed at WCDS.

Not only are the teachers and staff outstanding at their jobs, you can tell they actually enjoy them. The community of families is welcoming, diverse and supportive.

We thought we'd just be here for the year, but having seen first hand the positive impact of what truly great school can do for my kids - we are lifers.

This school is a second home for my family. I'm grateful for the friendships my children have and the commitment of the faculty and staff to ensure the kid's needs always come first. My kids are learning everything they need to learn and more, especially with the courtesies and character building that happens on a daily basis.

We are very happy we found the school. Being new to the area we were unsure of what a good option would be. Our daughter had been in a Montessori school before, and she made the transition pretty easily. There is a sense of community not just among the students but the families as well.

The smaller size of WCDS really makes the school feel like family, which is why the honesty, respect, and positive attitudes of others is reflected in each student. I've heard from some parents that they saw a significant change for the better in their children's behavior, especially very young kids.

A couple years ago I had one classmate who had some minor learning differences, and it was a bit of a toss-up on how that experience went. Some teachers (still at the school) were very accommodating, but others (not at the school anymore) were less understanding. I suppose that with some of the latter teachers gone, the school is doing much better with students who need some extra assistance.

Teachers are here to help counsel students on how to handle certain situations including bullying, but they ultimately leave matters up to the students. To some this is a positive thing, allowing kids to mature and respond appropriately, but to others this may feel like indifference from adult authorities within the school.

I came to WCDS in middle school and am grateful to have discovered a diamond in the rough. Currently a high schooler, I love my classmates, my teachers, my classes, and the overall environment. The school facilities may be a bit small and outdated, but updates are being made all the time and in my opinion, the school feels more cozy the way it is. Plus, the high-quality education more than compensates. Students who attend WCDS generally graduate with exceptional writing skills and a strong grasp of reading, language, and writing skills. The language program is very strong with several fun and educational opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, and the math and science department is becoming stronger as well. For such a small school, the number of extracurricular activities offered is substantial. I'm less familiar with activities in lower grades, but I can say that all clubs in upper school are student-led with adult mentors/sponsors, and most students join several clubs with a likely possibility of assuming a leadership position in at least one over the course of their high school career. WCDS offers a broad range of sports to choose from in both middle and upper school (with lower school students participating in P.E.), and probably the best part of team sports here is the fact that there are no tryouts. Anyone can join the team regardless of skill, and students participate for the love of the sport, not for bragging rights. Regardless of whether it's sports, academics, etc., however, you'll be surrounded by friends and people who care for your child's wellbeing. Everyone knows everyone in the WCDS community, and it's this family aspect that makes the school so special.

They'll also go out of their way to help outside of the classroom. And doubling as student advisors, the teachers form a strong support group for each and every child.

We've had our kids in WCDS for 12 years and counting. It is filled with dedicated, effective teachers. It isn't just a school, it's a family. They aren't just teaching our kids, they are enriching their lives and literally showing them the world through amazing opportunities for international travel. Highly recommend.

A funny story: Kindergartners at WCDS traditionally do a play on stage where they each hold up a planet in our solar system (that they've drawn by hand) and recite a poem about their planet. One year, the kid who was supposed to be Jupiter was absent, so an 11th grader who had been Jupiter when he was in kindergarten volunteered to sub in. It was quite a site to see this one 6-foot tall student standing in a row with these tiny kids holding up his planet and reciting his poem from memory! We've always witnessed this sort of supportive environment where the older kids help the younger ones and no one is "too cool" to show compassion.

Jessica Lindstrom is absolutely fantastic - caring, energetic and positive. She and other members of the staff are always outside -- rain or shine -- to greet kids in the morning as they file into the school. While rare, if we've ever had a question or concern that required a meeting, we received full attention right away. The leaders at the school promote the culture of kindness and respect.

One of the main reasons we love WCDS is because of the kind, supportive culture where bullying is not tolerated. Once, when our son was about 7 years old, I saw a much bigger kid take a toy from him on the playground and taunt him by holding it up too high for his reach. In the car, I asked our son if that kid was a bully and he said "what's a bully?" I explained that a bully is someone you'd rather not see in the hallway or on the playground and he said "Yeah, kind of." He described a few other situations where this same kid has bothered him and others. I brought this situation to the attention of the lower school dean and she took it very seriously. It never happened again. Years later, when I asked him, our son says he's never been bullied by that kid again nor has he seen anyone else be bullied by him. Even more importantly, he says that kid is a "nice guy" now!

The homework schedule is quite demanding by the time kids reach 7th grade, but I've heard several Wakefield students go on to college and say that the workload was no different (or even easier) than at Wakefield! The school really prepares kids for higher education.

Our son has been going to WCDS since preschool and, as an eight grader, he is mature, kind, well spoken, and conscientious about getting his homework and studying done. As his parents, we'd like to take the credit, but we're quite certain WCDS has had a great influence on his character. We're so fortunate to have such a high quality education nearby!

These kids have each others backs. That is not to say that normal friction/teasing do not exist, but that the students are very proactive about ameliorating problems themselves. I am proud of how they look out for one another.

The teachers at this school literally lit up my child like a bulb. They reach out when there is an oddly low score on a test or quiz, they are all accessible and responsive. They engage my child much more than our public school was ever able to do.

This school has been a blessing for us. Our very bright child was clearly not being challenged in her former school and was becoming lazy as a result. After touring many schools for my children to attend, I knew I had found a home at Wakefield. The curriculum on the website was attractive, but it was the feel of the school that was the perfect fit. Students here are polite, genuine, and happy. I took three tours of this school before our first day, and it was the same every time. The staff not only know the students by name, they know these students as family.
My son's first day of school was a huge deal for me, but I never doubted our choice. I was afraid of how he would react when I picked him up that first day. But when I saw him, he gave me a huge smile and said he loved his new school. I look forward to continuing here for many years!

I have been a Wakefield Country Day School parent for six years. I have come to feel that the WCDS community “walks the talk.” I feel think the Christian First Commandment “Love thy God with all thy heart, with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” is deeply and silently observed while the second commandment “Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself” is lived through action.

High expectations (in behavior, academics, service, sports) are the norm; if error occurs there are consequences; forgiveness follows. The college application process is both thoughtful and thorough. The majority of staff members are wise and seasoned - new teachers are well qualified and enthusiastic. Turnover is minimal. Over the past three years the school has been revitalized by senior staff and board renewal. The facilities are modest; the school operates debt free and has been steadily increasing its fundraising capacity.

If your child is college bound I highly recommend this school. You will respect the process; there are ample opportunities for participation; most importantly your child will graduate prepared to succeed in college.

WCDS is a fantastic place. We live in Warren County and it is a quick drive "over the mountain" to get the kids to school. Warren County, Front Royal, Frederick County, Shenandoah County and even Winchester families should check out this excellent school. The drive is shorter than you think, and beautiful views await on the way to school.
The teachers at WCDS give every student the opportunity to shine. My family has been a part of the Wakefield Country Day School community for six years and we are so grateful to the teachers, staff and other families at the school. I am a student in the 9th grade who has attended the school since preschool. I cannot recommend this school highly enough: from the great events such the Medieval Banquet and the annual Classical Recital to the opportunity to take both Ancient and Modern languages and accelerated math. There is little I would desire more in this school. Also, the opportunity to make it onto sports teams without tryouts is especially nice. I thank WCDS for all it has given me and I strongly recommend it.

WCDS is an outstanding school! Our young son has attended for the last 3 years. We have seen remarkable academic and social progress, and we have been supported at ALL levels along the way. WCDS students are among the most respectful, engaged and motivated around and their behavior reflects the strong focus on character that WCDS instills in its student body. I suspect in some school settings, we would be a little uncomfortable with the lower school kids and middle and high school kids on the same bus. NOT at WCDS! Our son regularly comes home with his homework complete. And regularly, some of the older students on the bus even help him with his work if he is stuck, quiz him on spelling words, etc. Our son has had so many wonderful interactions with the older kids, and has several very positive friendships with these students. His friends range from kids his age to high school students. Thanks for such a great learning environment, one we feel completely comfortable sending our child into every day...and one that does a fantastic job of helping kids build the kinds of life skills that are so often lacking these days!

I love WCDS. For me, it's always been about the character education. The students are respectful to adults and to each other. I have always taken the academic side for granted until recently. Each year, my kids are more and more engaged. As my oldest is now in 7th grade, he has only become more excited about school thanks to the wonderful teachers. Who knew Latin could ever be someone's favorite subject? My 5th grader is also challenged with his learning. He recently attended a Navy STEM expo where he was the youngest in attendance. In a round of math games, he beat out a group of 8th graders. That's when I knew the school must be doing something right because we don't do extra math lessons at home so school is his only chance to learn. I would recommend WCDS to anyone without reservation.

As an alumnus of WCDS, I was happy to give my two children the same great educational opportunities I had. They both seem to have adjusted well and are now comfortably settled into the WCDS environment. I have been pleased to see that they are both taking significant pride in their academic performance, something my wife and I have never seen before. This effort by them is definitely influenced by the environment there at WCDS. They are doing very well and I couldn t be more pleased!

Our daughter has been at WCDS since PreK, so we're on our 6th year. We've been extremely pleased with her education - the classic curriculum, small class sizes, emphasis on character, participation in sports, etc. It's definitely worth the tuition (and in my mind more reasonable than others in the area). The faculty and staff are terrific and there is a strong display of mutual respect (student-to-student, student/teacher, parent/teacher, etc.). I would highly recommend WCDS to potential students. Wish I could have attended a school like this!

We chose to look at Wakefield Country Day School during my eldest son's junior year at a neighboring private prep school. Unfortunately the environment in this particular school began to shift and our family felt it was necessary to make a change. As you can imagine we were extremely concerned with having him attend a different school in his senior year especially since he would be applying to top tier universities. I cannot praise WCDS enough for making our switch so easy. The entire WCDS community was so welcoming. The curriculum at WCDS was even more challenging then the one from our previous school. The administration made sure that our boys took any classes that were necessary over the summer so that they could be in line with their new classmates. Our sons are both extremely happy, have made some wonderful new friends and have continued to challenge themselves academically. Both boys have made high honors and my senior has made the dean's list. It was as if we never skipped a beat. I highly recommend WCDS to anyone who is looking for an academically challenging, warm, friendly and safe environment for their children to learn in.

My son spent his entire academic career at WCDS from pre-k through 12th grade. In addition to a strong curriculum, I've found the staff and faculty to be supportive of his learning needs over the years. It was a third grade teacher at WCDS who identified my son's ability to accelerate and the school supported him in skipping a grade, something that had never before been done. He graduated last spring, with acceptances to Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Duke, and full rides to UVA and William & Mary. He's now happy and thriving at Yale. Like any school, a parent must stay involved, but I highly recommend WCDS. The new head of school is phenomenal and I expect WCDS to only get better!

As a parent new to the school this past year, I have been incredibly impressed with the education my child has received from the two English classes taught each day to the Latin, Spanish, History, Science, Geography, Math, and electives offered. For a school this small, the students are able to participate in many state and local academic competitions and oftentimes earn first place. The teachers are caring and go the extra mile to give additional help when students need it and parents request it. The international students add cultural diversity, and the school's traditions like weekly assembly programs and yearly events like a Medieval Banquet are fun and educational. I also really like the school's policy which requires all students in the high school to participate in team sports. We couldn't be happier.

I have a 13 year history with this school. My older sibling and I transferred to the school in middle school, graduated from the school and went to universities. We did fairly well for ourselves, so our parents decided to keep our younger sibling at the school. He began at WCDS in Pre-K and attended all the way through middle school, doing very poorly in school throughout middle school. My parents were constantly scolded by the teachers that they were not doing enough to keep him up-to-date on his homework and tests etc. (as if it was their job!) Finally, at the end of his eighth grade year, they informed my parents that he would have to be held back if he wanted to continue at the school any longer. My main point: Wakefield boasts a small atmosphere in which every child receives individual attention for quality education. This is simply not true. My little brother was the product of Wakefield Country Day School. He has never gone to another school in his life. They offered very little individual help for him as he progressed throughout the years, even though they knew he was struggling and 13 years of developed "familial" relationships with the school did not help him advance.

My son is a student in Wakefield's Pre-K class this year and he has had a wonderful experience! At this age it's all about the teacher and his teacher is so full of love and enthusiasm that you literally see children light up in front of her. And she's not using her magic idly. Their days are packed with learning and they are loving it. Everything from cleaning-up, sharing, and developing good manners- to geography, calendar work, history, science, reading, and writing. I had no idea my pre-schooler was ready to learn so much. He pulls me out the door to go to class every morning, and can hardly be kept from running from the car to his classroom. What an ideal way for a child to begin his school years!

This is a great school with a great academic program that encourages responsibility, individualism and challenging oneself. Students will not struggle at college after graduating from here. I think the new head of school will be great for the developement and furtherment of an already great program. The social aspect is a problem though because there are so few students. Replying to the last comment- many students are accepted at very prestigious colleges (UVA, William and Mary) and I think the reason that they don't apply to many iveys would be that students seem to like to stay in state schools. But I do think with this upcoming senior class there could be many admirable admissions that hopefully is some sort of prescience (WOD word) for the future.

Very interesting that Wakefield with the "Wonderful" Classical education it offers -does offer the IB progam or Diploma -with the small amount of students -the Faculty should be able to tailor the classes around IB-that Diploma is recognized world wide. Also , with the very , very small classes and the affluent parents , I am quite suprised that the none of the Students either do not apply or do not get encouraged to apply to Harvard, Princeton , Yale , U of Penn, Dartmouth etc-with all the induvidual attention that these students get and the Classical Education -they should all be highly sought after by statewide Elite Colleges.

Okay, so my 15 year-old-daughter who attended WCDS from K to 8th grade is starting her sophomore year at a big (compared to Wakefield) public school in northern California (we moved for my husband's job). Even though this is her second year at UPrep, she felt the need to go to her first classes of the year with a "security blanket." When she could not wear the bright orange cap her boyfriend gave her, she chose the next best thing - a red & white WCDS athletic shirt! Outcome, first days as 10th grader survived!!! Thanks WCDS for giving my kids so much more than a great education. They are ready for life!!!!

This school has been great for my son socially, emotionally and academically. I love the fact that ethical and moral standards are promoted and they do not compromise their values for anyone or make any apologies for holding students individually accountable for their actions. The curriculum lends itself to a deep understanding of the subjects because 1) there is no block scheduling, 2) the depth of knowledge and experience of the teachers is superior, and 3) WCDS believes in quality over quantity in terms of areas of study and course offerings. I would challenge a 7th or 8th grader from any other school to compete against a WCDS student in British History, for example. Instead of filling their curriculum with a lot of "fluff", which takes away time from more important subjects, they stick to the basics and do it in depth, providing a true classical education that is extremely difficult to find anymore.

My experience with the school is that they have no qualified or licensed person on staff for MUTUALLY beneficial conflict resolution that would ultimately benefit the student. Being told that my child would be ostracized by parents and students was truly unbelievable, considering the remarkable "familial" reputation the school boasts. As a parent, I would like to be more involved with my child's educational experience.
