Forest Grove Elementary in Sterling, VA is a true hidden gem! Despite being a Title I school, it provides an exceptional learning environment. My child consistently comes home excited about what they're learning, and I'm always impressed that they report everyone is treated kindly.
Having attended private school myself, I supplement my child's education at home, understanding the differences in homework load. Forest Grove embraces a modern approach, equipping students with laptops for engaging, educational games. While I wish there was more emphasis on independent research, project accountability, and organizational skills to prepare them for the future, my priority is my child's happiness, positive friendships, and eagerness to learn—all of which Forest Grove clearly fosters.

My kids have attended for the past 6 years. We have had open and honest communication with the principal and staff. Teachers have always been responsive to feedback or requests. The school invite parents into the school to see what kids are working on. The kids get to participate in various fun activities throughout the year. The teachers go above and beyond. We are very happy with the school.

I was very concerned about the low ratings of this school, but our family is very happy here. I don't understand how this school could be rated so poorly. My child absolutely loved his Kindergarten teacher and class, as well as his specials (i.e. art, music, gym, and school counselor) teachers. They each got their own laptop during the day, brought home library books, and eventually received homework. There are events for parents to attend throughout the year. My child has made some really good friends, is reading at least at a 1st grade level, doing adding and subtraction, and understands simple multiplication and division.

I never understood why this school had such low scores. We lived just behind this school, and our son went there for kindergarten until we moved out of the country the following year. The staff was amazing. Our son was at the age he was nervous to go in most mornings, and a counselor volunteered to walk him from the door to his room daily. She said once he was in class, he was fine. This was during covid, so we couldn't walk him ourselves. Our son learned a lot that year, but we also practiced with him at home a lot too. There were a few days the parents were allowed to come in and sit with the class for an hour and he always seemed happy and seemed to get along well with the students and teachers. Our son had some behavior issues (he was hitting) and the counselors met with us and helped us work through a plan, and it worked. Also, in an effort to keep pace with other STEM curriculum, every kid in school gets a laptop - even the kindergarteners.
In short, this school is awesome. I recall shopping for our house in this district and being worried about the low scores, knowing our son would go here. But it ended up being a great experience. Our son's friends still attend, we still keep in touch with them, and they are still happy there. I think it's important to work with your child at home too to make sure their reading/etc stays on track, but that would go for any school. I think our sons success was due in part to the school and the home studying.

Forest Grove is a spectacular school. The staff are lovely, the students are behaved, and the education is simply wonderful. I was a former student, but now in 6th grade. Here we are taught not to bully and respect the PBIS rules. But to tell the truth, there are few misbehaved students, mainly male. There are only a few disrespectful children. I think the school should improve on lunch. The year in fifth grade, our lines were so LOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!! I hope they have changed that... Hope you decide wisely, - peACe#hteLOL

My three children attended Forest Grove for 1-5, and two attended K. The teachers were marvelous and committed to student success. My oldest daughter has volunteered there throughout high school and talks about how great the teachers are and how well-behaved the students are.

My two sons attended Forest Grove from kindergarten I through 5th grade. They have really enjoyed it and they have received a great education. This school recently won a national blue ribbon award and the teacher and education my kids received are excellent. My 5th grader recently told me unprompted that "no one bullies in my school". That was great to hear. You will be happy if you send your kids to this school.

Great school. My two daughters have attended this school and i can't say enough good things about the school. Teachers are involved and do a great job making sure kids are being developed properly.

This school is rated a 5 out of 10. It is not a very good school and the low rating is an accurate measurement of that fact. My 4th grade son has been the victim of repeated bullying and nothing measurable or effective has been done to correct the situation, in my opinion. My son is punished if he defends himself and the school does not care if you are hit, kicked, choked, or otherwise assaulted or restrained; students are not allowed to defend themselves! We believe, as a family, that fighting should always be an absolute last resort, but if you are being attacked, and cannot escape, you should be permitted to use necessary force to facilitate an escape to safety.

Our son attended this school for 2 years. He had a well rounded growth in this school with creative skills, science, social, arts etc. When he needed to be challenged more, the teachers readily gave him interesting work. The principal is a strong leader who promoted character, discipline, respect along with academics. School facilities are top notch. PTA could use more and active parental involvement. Overall, very satisfied.

My son is in this school for 3 years now. Its an awesome school. Teachers are great. They take care and provide challenging assignments for the kids to keep them motivated. The principal is a wonderful lady who treats everyone with respect and is a wonderful role model for the children. School needs more parent involvement. Overall tHis iis definitely a great school.

Forest Grove is one of the best elementary schools I've seen. The teachers are great, the principal is smart and resourceful and the support staff does exactly that-support everyone. If anyone's child isn't learning at this school, I would imagine it has more to do with that child's parents' participation and involvement in the school. Everyone who worked there was fabulous when my kids went to this school (2004-2011).

I thank God our child left this school on time because its nothing to write home about...my son was there for a short while, yet we saw no improvement...it would have been better if he was home while i taught him myself because we couldn't see any changes that he was actually in school,no homeworks, they don't teach them how to read, infact this is not a school i'll recommend to anyone because a childs foundation matters a lot...Start up a child in a good school and see what the child becomes later on in future.no no school!
