Our kids are at South campus. We left FCPS due to the excessive tech-based instruction and ELA curriculum (all short passage reading). It wasn't all terrible, but we wanted to see what else was out there. Overall, we're happy with Dominion--Singapore math, reading novels together as a class, strong vocab/reading/spelling instruction (yes--spelling still matters even with tech), hands-on science, and caring teachers. Classical model syncs well with developments in science of learning (importance of background knowledge). Even if I were not a Christian, I'd consider this place for my kid--yes there's Bible instruction, but it also doubles as literature/literacy, so it's not empty time regardless of your beliefs. The kids get lots of outdoor time (3 recesses/day for kinder--one 30 min and two 15 minute sessions, and lower grades get 3 recesses 3-4x/week. Upper grades might get 2?). School hours are 8:25-3:25, but you can drop off at 8 am and pick up at 4, that flexibility is very helpful. (Kids can play after school till 4, which becomes basically a fourth recess) The school just got chickens, and 5th/6th graders can fish in the pond at recess. There are lots of volunteer opportunities, but the school is also supportive of two parent working families. (e.g., there are scaled down ways to meet your volunteer requirement) School calendar: No random days off in the middle of the week unless there's a federal holiday. Kids are going to school 5 days/week almost every week, hallelujah. Full week off for Thanksgiving. They assign HW, which is great for building work habits, study skills, etc. It's about 10 min/grade/day, M-R. They send home written work and graded tests/HW weekly--it makes it SO much easier to see how your kid is doing, and for your kid to learn from their mistakes. It is a huge benefit to have the teachers grade the hw and send it home for you/your kid to see--something normal in the 80s/90s, but it didn't happen regularly at our FCPS school. In FCPS, my kid took all sorts of math tests but we never saw one last year. (Ditto w/online assessments--it's much harder for your kid to be able to review tests after when it's online.) If you read Jonathan Haidt's "Anxious Generation," Dominion is a model for his recs: There's a lot of multi-age play + no tech in lower school/encouraged digital minimalism at home. Kids play in the woods and build forts, it's great. It's not free, but overall, we are pleased so far.

Academics are weak at best and completely out of touch. The worst problem is the rampant nepotism and their 'we protect our own' mentality pervasive throughout the school culture. If you and your student are safely within the 'inner circle,' then, the sub-par academics set aside, you and your child would have a decent chance at getting positive experience out of this school. If you have any doubt about where you are situated vis-a-vis the inner circle, however, it would behoove you to stay clear. If you don't play along to get along at this place, the repercussions are thoroughly brutal and swift.

We have had children at Dominion Christian School for the last 14 years and we HIGHLY recommend the school for Parents who want their children to learn. A true classical education. My husband and I wish we could go back to school. The next generation of leaders go to Dominion Christian School. The teachers are not only teaching our children the fundamentals, they are teaching them how to critically think, and guide their hearts toward Jesus. If you want your child to not get caught up in a worldly view, send them to Dominion Christian School. You will not be sorry.
While I only ranked 2 stars for special education, the school has been very accommodating for one of our sons who is severely dyslexic. After having him tested and approved for an IEP, he is given appropriate accommodations to succeed in the classroom.

It is a blessing and a privilege to have our son attend the North Campus of this school (the South Campus is wonderful too!). It's a wonderful location filled with teachers and staff who glorify God in the way they love and care for the students. Jesus is the foundation of everything that is taught at this school. If you're considering a Christian school for your children, I strongly recommend scheduling a tour so that you can see these things for yourself!

We love this school! I really didnt want to pay for private school education, but just in her first two years here (K & 1st) it has been the best money we have spent. Her reading level already in 1st grade is equivalent to most 2nd& even 3rd graders in public school. And I love that she is learning things they really dont teach in public elementary schoolcursive :) public speaking & respect/being polite.

The teachers she has had are so loving, and caring and really enjoy working with the kids and teaching. Even the principal makes a point to know each child and their family.

I love that they teach kids how to learn and not just what to learn. And of course, as a Christian, I love that there is focus on God and the Bible throughout their school year. For example, she has learned all the books of the Bible, the Apostles Creed, Psalm 23 and Psalm 1.

There is a purity and innocence in the children that should be there. And theres a recognition and freedom of allowing kids to be kids in playing and learning, something lost in a world that matures kids too fast these days IMO. I highly recommend Dominion Christian School.

We have three children at Dominion in 1st, 6th, and 7th grades and all three have been there since kindergarten. We all love their school! From our first months in kindergarten into middle school Dominion has exceeded our expectations. At Dominion our students are known, loved, and cared for individually. Their teachers are intentional about developing their character as much as their academic abilities, and each teacher displays a love for Christ in all that they do. Our children are excelling academically and developing a love for learning and for God. We highly recommend Dominion Christian School.

We love everything about Dominion Christian School! We have two boys at the school who have attended since kindergarten; one is now in 12th grade at the Reston campus, and our youngest is in 5th grade at the Oakton campus. Dominion isn't just an excellent Classical Christian School, it has become part of our extended family. Our closest friends have children attending Dominion and our kids have developed amazing friendships at the school. The teaching is rigorous and demands of our children their very best. We love the smaller class sizes and the individual attention our kids receive as a result. The classical teaching model was a very important factor in our choosing Dominion Christian School for our kids. Our boys have both been on sports teams at Dominion and enjoyed winning soccer championships for the school the last several years! We looked at another larger Christian school in the area that had all the bells and whistles in their facility, but realized that the classical model and the smaller community at Dominion was much more important to us. Our family was new to Dominion last year (at the Potomac Falls location), and both our children have had an incredibly positive experience! Their teachers and principal are tuned into their individual learning needs. I like how the teachers engage with the students, even with little things like playing Capture the Flag and Sharks and Minnows at recess or hosting a knitting club or pirate-themed storytelling club after school. We have found the other parents to be kind and welcoming. We love the classical Christian model, and Dominion lives it out in a very practical way. I would definitely recommend the school to Christian (or Christian-friendly) families in this area.

The school teaches an extremely narrow & water downed view of the world while at the same time reinforcing to their students that they are receiving a superior education. I cannot deny that the school is indeed a tight knit community but that is a result of the makeup being extremely homogenous. Teachers are attentive of their students but - at least in my subjective opinion - will at times evaluate based on the students previous performance vs. what should be given. Cliques are formed among a select group of families who determine much of the culture. There is a lot of room to grow as sending students to college places of success post-graduation does not reflect reaching success.

I have three children who have attended Dominion since Kindergarten. The school is amazing and the teacher per student ratio is very good. The teachers care a lot about the students and work with them when they are struggling both academically and personally. The teachers do a great job at reaching out to the parents to let them know what is going on with their child at school. I really appreciate this environment and could not imagine a better school for them to attend. The school also makes learning fun with unique activities that are geared towards what they are learning in school. I am a big fan of the classical education and love the fact that in first grade the kids learn cursive. They learn latin from 3rd until 8th and they learn history for the most part chronologically. I love that they read whole literary works and study art in great depth. The focus is not on learning technology it is more on developing the mind and critical thinking skills.

We absolutely fell in love with Dominion. The staff and teachers care about each child's development as whole persons, not just their education. They have high standards, but let kids be kids and play with sticks and dress up. They have the most wild and inventive ways to instill a love of learning in their students and they actively seek for ways to make improvements. They navigated our child's delays in reading beautifully and helped him remain positive and self-confident despite his challenges. We moved out of the area and leaving Dominion seriously brought me to tears. We are just so thankful we found Dominion when we did and that my kids got to experience learning there. It was so transformative to my kids' world view and my understanding of what education could look like. I hope to instill some of their methods in our new school!

We currently have two children enrolled at Dominion (3rd and K) and have nothing but the best things to say about the school. My husband and I had long debated public vs. private school, and upon learning about Classical schools, I knew I was hooked. We have been blown away by how caring and dedicated the teachers are, and how our children are growing to genuinely love learning instead of just being taught to go through the motions of school. Dominion creates a caring, nurturing environment for our kids, and as I've gotten to know older students (up through 12th), it's clear that the kids here turn into mature, thoughtful, curious, and kind young adults. There's a strong passion for learning mixed with an allowance for kids to be kids (playing in dirt, the year-end Historical Festival) that I haven't seen matched anywhere else, and I could go on and on to anyone willing to listen. We are lucky to have found Dominion!

We are so grateful for Dominion. My son has learned so much about the Bible and biblical history there. The program is challenging, but in a very good way. I love the list of books they read and the freedom they have to play on the playground and large, open space at the Oakton campus. It's a happy community, and I feel comfortable texting the teachers at any time and receive prompt responses.

My daughter couldnt be happier when we took her out of Dominion. She went to this school for a year and it was the worst experience shes ever had. Instead of helping and supporting my daughter, the teachers and staff constantly humiliated and shamed her for everything she did. My daughter always came home crying because the teachers kept putting her in detention for reasons we felt were unfair and based solely on staff bias. She was anxious and unhappy in Dominion because of the unfair treatment she received. My daughter said that even though the school seems wonderful and challenging, it's actually very negative and unfriendly. The community at Dominion is toxic and does not care about the students mental health and happiness. My child did not do well at this school academically and barely got any help from her teachers. This school favors children that are not on financial aid and whose parents donate the most money. I do not recommend this school to anyone!

We found Dominion Christian School online after searching for a Christian school with a classical curriculum. We quickly found a community of faculty and families that warmly welcomed us, and now we wouldn't have it any other way. Our children have thrived at Dominion, in a wholesome, positive, and Christian based atmosphere focused on learning and growth with a bias toward in-school learning if at all possible. We are a military family in our second year and remain extremely thankful for the support we have found in the Dominion Christian community.

We could not be happier that we moved our daughters from public school to Dominion Christian school this year. The school has a wonderful sense of community where teachers and administrators care not just for the child but for the entire school community. Parents are welcomed and involved in all aspects of the school. It is a fun, challenging and carefree environment for the kids. The classic Christian education gives our daughters a foundation in the Bible and ancient cultures and the hands-on learning keeps them engaged. We have found in Dominion an institution that puts faith, goodness, beauty and wisdom at the center of our childrens lives. We are so thankful for Dominion and highly recommend it as an excellent and affordable alternative to the local public schools.

Our kids have grown and excelled both academically and in their relationship with the Lord since we joined the Dominion Christian School family. Parent involvement is actively encouraged. Administration and teachers are readily available to answer questions. Children are being taught how to think, not what to think. To say that my children have thrived at Dominion would be an understatement. Our family was seeking a change from our local public school, we wanted a school that was going to help our children develop not just educationally but socially, spiritually, and beyond. We were instantly drawn to DCS as we knew many families who attended and had wonderful experiences with the school. The school offers fantastic after school activities, clubs, and groups to meet the interest of a variety of students. Since day one, DCS has welcomed our family in with open arms, from the admin staff to teachers to the parental community. Our children have thrived academically, having gained valuable tools in how to learn in ways that they will remember their lessons for life, well beyond just studying for a quiz or test. I am a current teacher at Dominion at the Potomac Falls campus. It has been such a blessing being around a community of people who are committed to faith and a high level of learning. The students love to be at Dominion and find it a very welcoming environment. The curriculum is taught in creative ways, through songs and chants, which helps the students to grasp concepts quickly and in a fun way. The kids at Dominion are content with playing outside, building forts and using their imagination during recess, rather than relying on technology to give them a sense of excitement. I am grateful to be a part of this staff and community and invest in these wonderful students.

Our 2 boys started attending Dominions Potomac Falls elementary school campus this school year. Before theyve been going to the schools Oakton campus for 2 years. We all love the school, parents community and staff.
1. The entire school curriculum is fine tuned to produce a well rounded mature Christian person.
2. Average SAT score of 1340 is the 2nd in Fairfax County slightly behind TJ and Langley.
3. Small class size allows teachers to dedicate all his time and resources to 10-12 students as opposed to 30 in public schools.
4. Flexible tuition plan allows me to fit private school education in my single working parent budget.

We have been very happy with Dominion Christian. They are a "work hard/play hard" school. Students are going to work hard in all areas, but they will also have opportunities to have unstructured times to grow - with teachers to help them explore passions and interests. They instill a love of learning through the passion of the teachers as well as cultivating an environment that encourages a student to learn to take risks, look beyond their grades, and focus on the bigger picture of education. They have a lot of parent involvement which creates a safe environment for children and teens to grow and explore their passions. We feel it is the right mix of working hard to prepare for what lies ahead without taking away a child's need to have fun. How many schools can provide an environment where 5th grade boys wants to join an optional book club, or a group of 10th graders want to create a mentoring group for the middle schoolers, or some high school students would volunteer to help with an elementary school play production? These are just a few examples of the type of environment Dominion Christian has created.

Its a close knit community that adheres to godly restorative conflict resolution. I cant see bullying being tolerated. Mine are in K & 2nd and I have no concerns. 1st grade in public school for my older son (last year) I was concerned. Not at Dominion.

DCS provides a warm, nurturing environment where instructors are passionate about classical education and imbuing their students with a love of learning. Both of my kids love the atmosphere at DCS, have experienced strong support from their teachers, and feel like a part of a close-knit, caring community. As a parent, I have had very good relationships with the teachers, whom I have found to be hard-working, competent, genuinely interested in their students, and desirous in helping all the children in their classes to develop and reach their potential. While DCS does emphasize learning basic facts in the elementary grade levels, the middle and upper schools are definitely not about rote memorization. On the contrary, DCS students are taught to think for themselves, and to be able to back up their positions with evidence. DCS students learn to express their points of view and defend a position both orally and in written format. Knowing that DCS is already very strong in the humanities, we were initially unsure if DCS would also be able to provide a quality education in the maths and sciences; however, we've been very pleased with the math and science program at DCS. The math program is strong but flexible. Unlike a lot of other small schools, DCS goes above and beyond to ensure that each student is placed in a math class that fits his or her skills and abilities. Students who have an aptitude may be placed in pre-algebra or even algebra in the 7th grade! Conversely, students struggling in math are provided extra support and are not pushed along into a course they cannot handle to their detriment. The reason this system works so well, besides the terrific teachers, is because math is the first class of each academic day for everyone at DCS. So children in different grade levels can go to another math class that suits their needs. If there is one class we know our children will get every day, it's math! In the more advanced grades, both AP Statistics and AP Calculus are available. In terms of the sciences, my children love the FOSS hands on kits that enable them to do science experiments. I do think the upper school needs a formal lab to complement their curriculum, and DCS is well aware of this need. It has completed a capital campaign with the end goal of building a middle/upper school that would have, among other things, a lab. In conclusion, our family has been thrilled to have found this gem of a school. Dominion has come a long way in 20 years since it first broke ground as an elementary school in 1996, adding a middle school in 2001 and a high school in 2009. We are excited to see what new heights DCS will scale next and look forward to supporting this school for the next 20 years to come!

I cannot speak highly enough about Dominion. It prepared me so well for college and life in general. The education was outstanding and I have found its rigor to be unmatched in any of the discussion-style classes I have since encountered in college. I am still in touch with several of my teachers, who have been incredible intellectual as well as spiritual mentors to me.

Dominion has been a wonderful school for my family. I have children on both campuses. We are very thankful for the strong, stable staff; for the incredible parent and student culture; and for the emphasis upon teaching our children to love God and to serve Him well. The teachers and administration truly strive to teach students to love God with their hearts, souls, and MINDS. The administration is amazing, and the teachers are second to none. I noted the previous reviewer apparently had a negative experience at Dominion. I can honestly say that that's the exception, not the rule. Many (most?) of the statements made in the review are also factually incorrect, as well. Ask the school for hard data points on student attrition, faculty turnover, standardized testing data in math/science, etc., and you'll find that this reviewer is likely a disgruntled exception to the rule. Reading the other reviews (below) will tell the same story. I don't know anyone who is anything other than pleased and happy with DCS. It's an amazing school!

* Extremely high turn-over rate of teaching staff (annually) since new leadership.

DCS has been a blessing to our family. The family atmosphere and sense of community are unparalleled. The education has far exceeded our already high expectations and each teacher provides our son with the individual attention needed to ensure he understands and learns the concepts behind the subject. The entire administration treats him like he was their son, as do other parents at the school. The diversity of backgrounds and internationalism of the collective student body has also been a pleasant surprise. We have nothing but good things to say about Dominion, and feel the school is poised to truly become a preeminent classical school of education.

DCS has been our school family for nine years now. We have seen it grow and have been blessed by the amazing faculty. They know the hearts of their students and support us in shaping our children to become men and women of strong faith and good character. The curriculum is excellent and we are seeing the fruits of the classical model in our oldest as she prepares to enter high school. Latin has helped with English language and grammar, as well as scientific terms. It has been useful on many occasions! They are also interpreting advanced texts through a Christian worldview; making references to Beowulf, Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Count of Monte Cristo, and many others as we talk about life together. Looking at history in the context of faith gives it meaning and depth. Math and science is made fun through hands on methods. We have seen our children thrive in the intimate, community environment where they are known, loved, encouraged and trained to think deeply about life and the world. I highly recommend DCS for families who want to be actively engaged in their children's education and who want to develop their children to be actively engaged in the world for Jesus' sake.

We have three children in the DCS Middle School, all of whom have attended since Kindergarten. We have been tremendously gratified with every aspect of the school. The teachers and the head of school are top notch. The families form a genuine community and support one another in tangible and important ways in the raising of our children not only in terms of academics, but also in shepherding our children through the difficult waters of adolescence. Our children are developing a genuine love for learning. Especially with the transition from the Grammar to Logic stage, the time in the classroom is naturally engaging, and the assignments draw them in as well with the focus on critical thinking and a holistic, integrated view of the world and learning. Personal attention from the teachers and Head of School has been extremely helpful. We've been amazed at what a detailed knowledge the Head of School has on our children's personal challenges and successes. Teachers maintain helpful communication, with a supportive, pro-active stance that has enabled us to address academic challenges before they become a significant problem. DCS is a big part of why I'm excited about my kids' future.

My elementary-aged child is thriving at DCS. He is so engaged in the classroom and with the curriculum. Excellent, creative teaching and meaningful and manageable homework. To earlier comments, not a worksheet sent home that I can remember, just instructions of what material to review. Communication with the teacher is great. I'm amazed at not only what he is learning (ancient history and Latin) but how much he is enjoying learning it!

I only wish we had found this school earlier. Great nurturing fun environment. Perfect fit for our family. After 3 years in FFX Co, my kids couldn't wait to move to DCS because of the intimate size and philosophy. The transition was sometimes difficult because of the different curriculum, but they know they've learned so much more here. The academics are rigorous, but they are learning how to think critically, and to me, that's priceless!

DCS is adding 12th grade for the 2012-13 school year completing the K-12 classical Christian school. Next fall, we will start our 12th year at the school (we have three children...one in each stage of the model... grammar, logic and rhetoric) and could not be more pleased. My husband and I grieve that we did not have this education. Children are taught how to think... a lost art. God's hand of blessing has been upon this school and our children are receiving a supurb education which is reflected not only in their national test scores but in their character. The financial sacrifice (although this school is considerably less than most) will reap eternal rewards for generations to come!
