This school is wonderful. All three of my kids have attended Alvey and I couldnt have handled picked a better school. The Principal and Vice Principal truly care about the students at the school and have been nothing short of wonderful. Every teacher we have had has been amazing and I truly feel like they care about my kids. We feel so lucky to be able to send our kids to Alvey.

I have found the leadership to be outstanding and really appreciate their ability to listen and collectively work with parents to solve issues. The teachers really care about their students and work really hard to ensure the best is achieved from each student. My kids love Alvey and so do I!

I have 3 children, and one has successfully completed his elementary education at this school. He excelled and was met with support for his challenges in each year of his schooling here. The staff are welcoming and friendly and the administration is knowledgeable and hands-on.

So far Alvey doesn't seem a top school. Home work is non existent, there reason was they wanted well rounded students meaning they should be doing other activities besides homeowork at home. I understand that concept but if they dont discpline their students and get them used to homework and studying they will not be prepared for real life unless you anyone knows of a top university that doesnt give home or ask their students to study let me know. I mean literally maybe if lucky an hour of homework a week. Their answer to homework is at least 20-30 min of reading each night, yeah!! Coming from the Fairfax county school system the difference is night and day. I am really surprised.

We have only been here short time, but already have problems working with the staff regarding my son's IEP. The principal likes to do things her way and doesn't like to be questioned. She says she has a Special Ed background but when I asked her about reading programs for dyslexia - like Wilson or Susan Barton - She says she never heard of them. We agree to certain things in meetings, but the school does exactly what they want. The gen ed teacher barely has anything on her webpage, although other teachers do so much more. So you never have any idea what's going on. They are not letting my son do gen ed math work although he finished doing grade level work a year ago. They have a sub for the special ed class so the kids aren't really getting proper instruction. They don't offer any good after school enrichment programs because they say they don't want parents to pay anything. So they have parents run things. I think they just don't want the bother. Other schools have PTA's run this, but I get the feeling the principal wants complete control and doesn't let anybody do anything creative. If think it's okay NOT to ask questions about your child's education - this school is for you.

The principal is passive-aggressive. She will say things to your face and be nice, and then do things the way she wants to even to the detriment of your child. She does not have your child's interest at heart. It seems like she doesn't want to improve or make anything better. She's just trying to maintain the status-quo. She does a poor job in hiring teachers. Last year she hired a math teacher and within a few months realized he couldn't do his job and removed him. They made him someone else's assistant. You wonder, how can this happen? I also wonder why parents don't want to volunteer for the PTA - maybe it's because they have to deal with her. It seems like Alvey needs some new blood.

We lived in the area in 2011 and found this schools's approach inconsiderate to our daughter, to us as parents and at one point out right inappropriate. Our daughter attended half of first grade here, during which time assessments were given to determine our daughter's skill level in sight word reading and spelling. Our daughter struggled, yet no communication came home in regard to studying or on when the next assessment might happen. By the end of the first quarter, they referred my daughter to a reading specialist and she progressed quickly through reading levels. At this time I was reading three books a night to my child, two times each. Before winter break I was called in for a conference where I was told how well my daughter was doing and that my daughter was "a princess" who liked the additional attention and didn't really need help. The reading specialist said she'd never seen anyone progress in the program so quickly and dismissed any notion that my daughter was really struggling. My daughter was later diagnosed through a psycho-educational evaluation as being dyslexic. We moved by January and I am so glad we did. My daughter is thriving elsewhere.

This is our first year at this school and we've had a number of issues come up. The school counseling department will pull your child (regardless of age) out of class to conduct an interview with them for the "special programs" they offer, without consulting with parents first. We were told this is a "standard practice" in the industry and has been shown to be the best method. We had zero communication from the teacher and were told there were no issues with our child and didn't need a parent-teacher conference during the second round of conferences for the year. A couple of days later we received a letter home stating that a staff member had recommended our child for this special program from the counseling department to help address learning and social skills needed. If there was additional assistance needed, shouldn't the teacher have made us aware of this? We are often spoken down to by the staff and with each issue we are told "This has NEVER happened before!" One of our kids has had a great teacher, the other has had a miserable year with a teacher who is introverted, strict, and non-communicative- but teaches kindergarten! This school needs to re-evaluate priorities!

By far the best school we have ever attended. We move every three years for work and always choose our home based on the schools. The people in the neighborhood are pretentious and their children can do no wrong.. but the school and staff are amazing.
