We feel incredibly lucky to have found this small, tight-knit Montessori school. Our child attended CHMS through kindergarten, and it was the perfect environment for him to learn and grow. The teachers and staff are exceptional. Because it’s a small school, every teacher knows and cares about each child. Their warmth, support, and commitment to the Montessori principles helped our child develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning. The large outdoor space is another huge plus. The kids spend so much time exploring, playing, and connecting with nature! There is a real sense of community and parental involvement at CHMS. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our child’s education and social development.

Both of my daughters attended Children's House. My oldest is now in her 3rd year at the University of Virginia. It is a wonderful school with wonderful teachers. I highly recommend this amazing school. It has given both of my daughters the foundation to succeed. Thank you very much CMHS!

This is an incredible school in every way. My children absolutely thrived here. The teachers and staff are warm and loving. Children are taught so much more than academics. This is the best preschool in the area!

We are grateful to have found this school. This is our fourth year at the school, having sent our two kids here. The teachers are caring, the class sizes small, and there is a close community - my kids have made wonderful friends here. Lessons are individualized, and students gain a love for learning, confidence, and self reliance. We especially love the outdoor space the kids have to play and explore - the playground area is beautiful and much nicer than any other preschool in the area. The school is situated on a large wooded area that allows for class hikes as well. My oldest also attended kindergarten here and was very well-prepared and adjusted when it was time to transition to a larger school.

We are a returning family to CHMS. Our first child attended from age 3 to age 6, completing the three-year Montessori cycle. We could not have been happier with her experience. Now, at 10 years old, she often mentions how she wishes she could have stayed at CHMS forever! She made wonderful lifelong friendships and memories. We had maintained a relationship with the school since and now our second child is blessed to attend Kindergarten at CHMS. The teachers have gone above and beyond to ensure a safe in-person school environment this year and it's nothing short of remarkable that they have not had to close for even a day due to the pandemic. We are so impressed with the measures they've taken, and the quality of the education has remained top notch. Our child is receiving the best Montessori curriculum in a safe and nurturing environment. The wooded outdoor space cannot be beat: the landscape architect-designed space is the perfect natural place for children to enjoy nature. The school prioritizes outside time with extra-long recess, nature hikes, and gardening where the children learn about creating habitats for animals and caring for Mother Nature. There is playground equipment as well. We knew CHMS was one of the best preschools with the best Kindergarten program in the area, where each individual child's needs are met, but this year we have seen the resilience and perseverance of this little but mighty school. CHMS is a very special place!

The owner is a long standing member of both the Reston and Montessori communities

There aren’t specific learning difference resources here, but the teachers are experienced across different learning. They also, importantly, will work closely with the county for any services that a student deemed eligible for receiving in their school day, including any specialists who came into the classroom to observe and work with your child.

They wont tolerate it, there are real consequences

Posted: December 13, 2019

Our experience for both of our different children was wonderful !

Posted: December 13, 2019

There is no homework for toddlers here

Very experienced teachers of multiple ages and global backgrounds

CHMS leverages the Virtues Project lessons each day with its students, to promote universal character and integrity.

They don't have homework, and preschool-kindergarteners shouldn't!

Posted: July 11, 2019

The teachers are wonderful, all of them. They love the kids and take such great care of them. They're patient, kind, and have VERY good classroom management skills.

Posted: July 11, 2019

They talk about virtues (character education) every single day and use it to help the kids learn to solve conflicts and express their desires and emotions.

Posted: July 11, 2019

Keturah is just the most wonderful woman who really understands and implements Montessori principals throughout the school. She provides the kids with exceptional enrichment activities that make a difference in helping them to become good people, like their focus on virtues and the arts (Fine Art education in kindergarten, music, Spanish, and outdoor education through gardening and hiking and the beautiful outdoor space she has created for the kids).

Posted: July 11, 2019

Every child is an equal here, but it goes beyond and the teachers ensure that each child gets exactly what they need, when they are ready for it or when they need it.

Posted: July 11, 2019

Bullying isn't an issue because they talk so much about virtues and teach the kids to treat everyone respectfully.

Our three girls attended CHMS from preschool through kindergarten, each year from 2011 to 2019. Choosing this school for our girls was truly one of the very best decisions we've ever made.

Every teacher was a positive influence in their lives. The Montessori approach and the supplemental curriculum (Spanish, Fine Art education, Outdoor education, and Music) was engaging, supportive, and appropraitely challenging for my girls. They all learned how to to read, had a great math foundation, and learned to use words to solve conflict and to explain their emotions, which has served them very well. My girls all LOVE to learn new things and they enjoy reading more than any other activity. I credit all of that to Children's House.

My girls left there after three years confident and happy, and they thrived in public school. I'm so thankful for the wonderful experiences they had there, and the very positive experiences we (as parents) had there. I cannot say anything bad at all about the school - not in 8 years! Additionally, this community of parents and teachers is unlike anything I've found anywhere else in Northern Virginia. I'm thankful to have been a part of it and to have made connections with so many wonderful families.

I have not seen or heard of any bullying cases, either from the teachers or from my child.

We have seen our child blossom while attending Children's House. She is natually a bit shy and cautious, and she was not having a good time at her former daycare; every morning would be an emotional ordeal during dropoff. A week or so after starting Children's House, we saw a great positive change in her general mood. She is genuinely excited to go to school and loves all of activities and teachings.

Posted: July 11, 2019

The educators are great and are very approachable. Our child loves her teachers and talks glowingly about them.

Posted: July 11, 2019

Children's House actively encourages and teaches good character traits in all of their students thru their Virtues cards (such as kindness, helpfulness, compassion).

As it is early education they do not have formal homework, however they do engage students outside of school by requesting themed sharing by the topic studied in school, and they will send home unfinished “work” if the child would like to continue working on it.

Posted: July 10, 2019

They take into account each child’s interest and challenges while building up their knowledge base with strategic work that pushes their learning and also gives confidence to their foundations.

I have two kids soon to be in fifth grade who are the graduates of Children's House Montessori School. My youngest will be attending Kindergarten there in Fall. I could not be more satisfied with the quality of teaching and care that the staff of CHMS provides. The advantages of the small school is the individualized attention the child can receive and a close community. The school is situated on a large wooded area and kids go to the hikes every week. Once a year the school organizes a camping trip for the students and their families. It is a wonderful opportunity for the families to get to know each other around a camp fire! The school lives up to its motto: for the love of learning: my twin 10 year olds were more than ready for the elementary school and my youngest is doing really well with reading and math. The music and art are also very much emphasized in the school curriculum. My kids love to discuss the favorite composers and artists that they learned about at CHMS. I could go on and on about the quality of academics and care of this school. I highly recommend it.

The school absolutely does pay very strong attention to honesty, integrity and fairness. One of the ways they reinforce this is through the Virtues Project curriculum. Each morning one virtue card that describes a virtue such as honesty, integrity or fairness is read before the school day starts.

I have had 2 kids come through the full program at this wonderful school. This is truly a Montessori school that employs and applies all the elements of the Montessori approach. My children were in a calm, encouraging and kind environment, which in turn helped them learn well. They both left there with strong academic skills, art appreciation and great learning behavior. This school backs up to a wooded area and the kids get to go on nature walks, learn about the local wildlife by observing and also to appreciate their environment. I really cannot say enough good things about this school, the teachers there or their approach to kids. Very highly recommended.

Children's House Montessori School of Reston is now accepting applications for 3-5 year olds for the 2015-2016 school year. In addition to our daily Montessori work cycle, we offer weekly Spanish classes for all children as well as music, where we study composers, listen to music from around the world, and learn to play instruments. The children also take weekly nature hikes and tend to our gardens. Our Kindergarten students also receive hands-on art instruction and have an Art Show at the end of the year. They also take three educational field trips each year. All children get to enjoy our expanding natural playground, certified backyard habitat, learn about both habitat gardening and tend to our flower and plant gardens. Our parent community is wonderful, and we culminate each school year with a family camping trip. Call us today to schedule a tour and meet our fantastic teachers.

Our son attended this school since the Preschool year, and he is currently in K year, graduating this summer from the 3-year curriculum. We, as a family, gained valuable knowledge about the Montessori philosophy from his school. What a great method. Children learn to care, respect and love everyone and everything in life. They have lots of fun too. Highly educated and trained.teachers. Playground is a must see even if you don't enroll your child in the school.

Having searched exhaustively for a preschool in the area, we were thrilled to have found Children's House. Other schools we visited, even other Montessori schools, just lacked the warmth and steadfast devotion to children that CHMS exudes. It certainly fosters my daughter's early learning skills; however, I am truly delighted to see how well the teachers are able to encourage her self-reliance, emotional growth, and self-esteem. The school is lovely and bright and has a playground full of new equipment. I love that the children learn about taking care of our environment and about conflict resolution through peace practices. I feel that the teachers treasure each and every one of their students.
