Absolutely horrible. When I had finally made the decision to take my kids out of this school I had just begun to realize how badly this school had affected them. My 2 oldest kids were put in the special needs class for no reason and without any warning to me.Even though my kids were diagnosed with autism they showed little to no visible signs of autism and were learning just fine. My kids were already reading before they started in this school, after 2 months of being in that class when I asked my kids how school was and what they learned, to my shock, my boys said they played with toys all day and the teacher didnt teach them anything. Their reading skills had deteriorated gradually since they were put in that class. I hope to never set foot in that horrid building ever again. I definitely DO NOT recommend this school for anyone who

Very good school and amazing teachers and staff. Our boys attended Glenkirk Elementary school for 2 years and one of our sons had an IEP, it was all a great experience! Now that we have moved because of my husband's job, I miss Glenkirk elementary teachers and staffs the school.

Wonderful school, dedicated teachers and staff. The PTO is amazing and has wonderful fun activities to bring the school and community together! The school would be perfect if the principal would leave! She is the only negative about the school. We have been in this school for 5 years and have 9 more years to go :) Just hoping that we can do it with a new leader!

This is our first year at Glenkirk, and so far we've been nothing but impressed. The PTO is active and engaged, putting together a lot of events for the kids to do, and we have had great communications with our kindergartner's teachers. I've also had the privilege to meet the principal, Mrs. Gilkerson, and she went out of her way to help me with something. I'm so happy that we're at a great elementary school! Thank you to all the teachers and support staff who make this a fun, friendly place to learn for our kids.

Great school for the neighborhood. No more trailers. Back to normal size school gives kids a great experience.

Dedicated teachers, warm and personal environment that is highly receptive to parental involvement in the educational process. Lots of events and interesting curriculum with after school activities that help to develop children's overall intellectual insight and ability. We have three children enrolled in Glenkirk Elementary, and have a very positive impression of this school.

Great school and a great part of this neighborhood. This school is loved by all its parents.

It's not fair that Glenkirk has been rated a 7. If you look at the one-star review, it come in from person who had never attended - who actually lived in Fairfax just wanting to know more - skewing the other votes here (the others mainly positive). We loved Glenkirk and were there for many years. I know the principal very well and can say that while she may come off as tough, it's in part because she's so focused on those kids - even in her off hours. The teachers are equally dedicated, often digging into their own pockets with the budget is tight. The building is beautiful and the PTO (at least when I was there) was very active with many high quality activities and a lot of involved, caring parents.

My three children love Glenkirk. Teachers are dedicated to student success, recognizing children as individuals and work as a team to meet their individual needs. Environment at school is positive and welcoming. Even though the school is large, the staff and teachers all know my children and greet them by name each morning.

Excellent Principal leading school toward Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math specialty. Great teachers and caring staff. Volunteer for the Parent Teacher Advisory Council that meets once a month in thethe evening with lead teachers, parents, and Principal. The group affords parents the opportunity to give input into the school's strategic direction.

My son just started Kindergarten this year. I am very impressed with his teacher, Mrs. Burke. So far, no complaints.

Can't ask for a better community, school, or staff! It has always been a fantastic place to work and send students to learn!

My two children both attended Glenkirk for the past three years. The first year I was not disappointed. Great teachers, great vice principal and what I thought was good leadership from the principal. As time, and the school have grown(1200 students 2010-2011), my opinion has changed. The teachers and staff are the only people holding this school together. The principal, through her own admission, has many personal problems and has frequently been away or distracted. The vice principal's departure in December 2009 was a completed surprise. Even more surprising was the fact that she was replaced by the administrative intern. Until this past week, she was only "acting" VP. All of the above has resulted in very little direction or leadership in the school. Classrooms are crowded, teachers/staff tense. Administration largely absent. Some kids don't know who they are. For the record, I am involved in the school regularly.

My kids have been at Glenkirk for the past two years. I am a frequent volunteer. Althiugh the atmosphere at Glenkirk is friendly and enviting, the education is limited. The school outgrew its space in only 2 years and this has put undue stress on the teachers and children. I am seeing more and more "teaching to the SOL" then I was at first. This is disappointing ( I mean, why so much interest in Mali, for example - b/c it is on the sols). There is no challenge for brighter students - everything is being taught to the lowest common denominator. My daughter has put in NO EFFORT all year - I mean NONE- and she has straight A's. what does that mean.....? Overall, a nice environment but be prepared to supplement the curriculum at home to fill in all the holes - and there are plenty!

Both of our daughters attend this school. We could not be more pleased with the teachers and administration. The school is in our community, which has been such a pleasure to walk our kids to school daily. We have made many friends in the community during our walks to and from school. The parent involvement is very high in this school, which really helps the kids blossom!
