Horrible the principal is very rude. He automatically thinks if your child isn’t succeeding in the class that they need an IEP. Certain teachers care but most of them act like they can’t teach your child. If your child attends this school then you need to find an another school because they make you as the parent feel like your doing such a horrible job not communicating or lack of understanding.

We are starting our second year at Newton-Lee and couldn't be more happy with the teachers, communication, and quality of education. When my children share what they are learning, they sound excited and proud of their accomplishments. The teachers meet the student where they are and are not willing to settle even if a child is excelling in an area. We are lucky to have teachers that are proactively looking to keep challenging the students. I also really appreciate the focus on social and emotional intelligence. Much of this was lost during the pandemic years, and it is nice to see the school supporting the whole child. There is also a strong focus on emotional wellbeing and anti-bullying. I feel like my children are being well equipped to succeed. Additionally, I truly appreciate the opportunity for parents to get engaged and build a partnership with the staff and teachers at the school. Finally, while it would be helpful to consolidate the channels of communication into one source/app, it is really great how much communication we receive from the school - weekly newsletters from the teachers and principal along with daily updates in the form of pictures/class communications and hand written notes. Newton-Lee has a very welcoming atmosphere, and we really appreciate everyone at the school.

The office staff is rude, unwelcoming and at times hostel. Entering the school is a uncomfortable experience. The office personnel maintains a shortness and unpleasant demeanor. Volunteering has been very unrewarding or appreciated. I have never received a thank you from anyone. The Principal needs to have more compassion and actually resolve concerns and complaints instead of deflecting blame back on to the parent. Overall, my experience with this school has been stressful and just plain awful. I can not wait until my child is done with this school and I never have to deal with them again. What a disappointment!!

The teachers want to care and seem interested in your kid but are so busy with another fund raiser and out of school activities that they miss the more important one on one things like doing IEPs (Individual Education Plan) which are mandated.

Overall it's a great school and my kids like it. Biggest problem is teachers don't spend enough time to help kids with autism and other disabilities to make progress on IEPs. Simply put they will try to make it seem like an IEP is not required, not do anything with making and achieving goals, and they take no responsibility (it's all on your kid). However they will still find your kid at fault when something goes wrong and it's a challenge with his disability. Disability avoidance isn't solving the problem. Plus if your kids struggle with things like reading expect this to be a problem of at home not something the teacher is held accountable for in class.

The principal is a terrible leader. He treats the teachers very poorly. He has no respect for family life. His socialization is very uncomfortable. He says harsh things to the teachers. He is okay with the students and the parents. The teacher keep leaving because of his poor leadership. Mrs. Kim is very good.

Bleh. Newton Lee is overrated BIG TIME. Soooo much entitlement with the students and parents. PTO was like a big school clique. Meetings were at 3;00 pm in the afternoon!!!! Could they pick a more inconvenient time. Not to mention they had volunteers take kids from the autism self contained room around on bikes. Those kids are marvelous, they are not the issue AT ALL. The issue is this is such a huge privacy violation AND I don’t think it’s appropriate to have parent volunteers be in charge of children who have physical and behavior challenges because they aren’t trained nor do they know the child’s BIP. While I LOVE the idea behind it, I do not think it is appropriate at all. These are sensory breaks for these kids and they deserve them. An OT or COTA should be providing this. But alas, I also know from personal experience that therapeutic services at LCPS is abysmal.

The school, entire staff, and especially the principle are absolutely exceptional. I was nervous coming in after reading a couple bad reviews regarding the principle and I asked a couple neighbors before school started and they love him and my own experience has been the same. He is warm, caring, student focused and and overall does a wonderful job directing the staff. Him and his whole staff have helped so much with my child who has special needs. THIS IS A WONDERFUL SCHOOL do not let the few bad reviews scare you if you're coming in new you will be so pleased from PTO to the staff and the diversity. Wishing you a wonderful school year.

My children were ostracized by the kids in this school. There is a very entitled philosophy with these kids. We left and went to another LCPS school that is more diverse and the children were so much nicer and respectful.

I had a concern about my children or their IEP, I got "oh they are fiiiiiinnnne" from her. It's so insulting. The Principal is no where to be seen and out of touch as well.

That would be a great big NO!!!!! Where do I start? I guess my first clue was when my daughter got the highest grade in the class on the very first test of the year. I said something to the teacher that "X is so proud of herself." To which he said "yeah but she didn't really get the highest grade because she gets accommodations."


WHAT?!!' The heck she didn't!! Those accommodations make it a level playing field because of her disability!!!! What kind of resource teacher thinks like this?!!

In third grade, our twins had 2 hours of homework every night. This tells me someone wasn't doing their job during the day.

Oh, not to mention my kids were OUTED BY THE TEACHER in front of the entire class for having a disability!!!! This is a privacy issue. This is how my twins found out they had a disability. Can you imagine?!!! It was traumatic and we are still dealing with the effects of it, three years later. I am so thankful we only stayed that year and I pulled them out via special permission. If you have kids who are intelligent and have learning differences, I would strongly advise not attending here if they are in a general ed environment all day. They don't understand inclusion.

This was a horrible experience from day one. I regret that we didn't seek special permission for our children to attend another Lcps school earlier. If you have intelligent children with learning differences, this is NOT the school to attend. They don't understand inclusion. There are other schools in LCPS who do it right- research it and talk to other parents. Our kids went on to another school 2 miles away and it was like night and day. It was an amazing experience - same curriculum etc. It is sad that schools within LCPS vary so much when dealing with kids with IEPs and 504s. It is 3 years later and I am still dealing with the damage done to my two at Newton Lee. It was traumatic. I understand they do a decent job with kids who are in a self-contained environment and autism room, etc but I can say from experience they did a HORRIBLE job with children with ADHD or other LDs who are smart but learn in a different way. My kids self/esteem plummeted after being here. If you have a different learner who is in a general education environment all day, this is NOT the place.

When my daughter was there she was bullied everyday. The teacher did nothing about it. The kids were evil and had a pretentious attitude. I am so glad I took her out of that repulsive environment.

The principal is the weakest link in this school. Most teachers and administrators are very helpful though. So if you can avoid dealing with Mr. Lyons, save yourself some time, he is a shame for NLE. The school deserves a much better principal.

Principal Lyons is the only bully in this school that teachers and parents have no idea how to deal with. All other bullying issues are dealt with swiftly. Compare to other schools my daughter has attended before, NLE is a true bully-free school (except for the principal himself)

Good school. Hardworking teachers and very helpful PTO. Principal Lyons is atrocious but it looks like everyone has learned by now how to ignore him. Overall, it's an excellent school. My son and daughter enjoy learning there. I am a busy parent but I like how amazingly helpful the teachers have been this year.

I think it obviously depends on the teacher and subject. There are some truly exceptional teachers at Newton Lee and they are most definitely effective in their teaching and dealing with their students. But you also have some very ineffective teachers who should leave the profession.

I don't think the topic/subject is just related to Newton Lee. I think most teachers at most LCPS elementary schools are prohibited by their administration from giving too much homework. There seems to be 2 camps-1 camp wants more homework and the other camp thinks that there is already too much. If the students were given enough time in class for the lessons and also the practice than homework might be able to be eliminated from elementary school. But the emphasis is on passing SOLs and not about learning and being challenged

Definitely not, the administration has taken on the practice of closed loop teaching- 2nd grade teacher this year will move to teach 3rd grade but only teaching their previous entire 2nd grade class of students. So you have students who benefit from the consistency of having the same teacher for 2 years and other students struggling because they have to learn a whole new teaching style from a new teacher. I don't think it's necessarily the schools responsibility to teach honesty, that needs to be taught at home. As far as integrity and fairness absolutely not-students in certain classes with certain teachers are definitely not given the same degree of fairness or integrity. Why should some students get preferential treatment over other students.

Newton Lee used to be an amazing school with phenomenal teachers and a caring administration. Newton Lee at one time was considered the gold standard in elementary schools in the Ashburn area. That was from 2008-2014. The same can no longer be said after so many changes in the administration and teaching staff. There's been a steep decline in parent volunteers over the past 2 years. Any public school but especially elementary schools rely so heavily on parents to volunteer, not sure why the parental involvement has dropped, maybe the new administration hasn't made the parents feel welcome , maybe the parents don't feel as if they have a responsibility to the school or community. Whatever the underlying cause, Newton Lee ES and the students are suffering, perhaps the NLE staff and administration have relied too heavily on volunteer participation to fill the gaps not filled by staff members. The NLE PTO is phenomenal but it can only thrive with a strong membership. Each year, fewer and fewer parents join the PTO. The PTO works closely with the school to ensure that the students and teachers have all the necessary tools to succeed. The student population will be around 700 when school starts in the fall. It would be wise for the administration to understand the importance of retaining the best teachers and to never settle for mediocrity. The Ashburn community schools need to have leaders willing to expect a lot from their students, just passing an SOL is not a measure of a successful year.

Another example why the great schools school rating does not tell the complete story. There are a couple of phenomenally inspired and dedicated teachers, however most fall into a very average category. This school does not adequately provide a good grounding for academics. My 5th grader was still writing "rainbow" words for his wordy study (when I expected them to use it in a sentence etc.). Math is a total joke - for the entire first quarter my fifth grader did 4th grade math. Even in the lower grades, math is too easy and does not lay down a solid foundation for advanced math. Many teachers teach to the test and one third grade teacher also told the parents that she encourages parents "helping" out on project work and even doing it if their kids are unable to.

Reading recommendations from teachers are either flat out wierd (Poe for a 5th grader???!! with all its dark themes) or completely uninspired (like Harry Potter - 5th graders will discover HP on their own, the job of the teacher is to recommend books that they normally won't pick AND are age appropriate).

Bullying is a serious problem. The school does nothing to prevent it. My son was ceaselessly bullied for his lack of branded clothing ( he is well dressed, just doesn't wear $200 shoes) and the teacher asked him to not be "so sensitive". My kid is a nerd and he found it impossible to fit in. (We are in a different school now (not in VA)) and I have never seem him this happy. Kids in school focus too much on clothing and "appearances" than substance. The school encourages that behavior by providing limo rides as a prize (instead of books or other growth-oriented treats). The social aspect of the school is more like a highschool (cliques, clothes, nerds made fun of ). Its not an inclusive school, so tough luck if you are not white AND are a nerd. If your family values humility, substance over appearances and are genuinely interested in getting a quality education, this school is not for you/your kid.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this school somehow manages to rank high. I agree with all negative reviews left here by parents. They seem much more truthful to me. Thanks God our family is moving at the end of the year. Our kids can't wait to leave NLE and its lazy teachers, rude administrators, and dirty facility. Bullying is not the only issue here. Values are the issue. While it all looks good on paper, in reality, NLE teaches nothing but how to be a very average learner with submissive tendencies. If this is what you want for your kids, you'll be fine. And your kids might even get a ride in a limo with the principal himself (how pathetic! but it is one of the "awards" the NLE students are encouraged to strive for! it leaves me speechless!) Don't expect your children to excel here academically - NLE is not the right setting for this type of values. When most parents here are proud of the fact that their kids can do single digit addition in 2nd grade... while in most schools kids in second grade study multiplication and fractions.... These folks have their "values and standards" set at a very low level.

Teachers here are not talented, not passionate about their work. They don't care to use individualized approach in classrooms. They have no idea what your child is learning or how she is performing. It is a very common practice here to ask volunteer parents to "check" students' submissions in classroom. As a result, teachers really do not track anyone's results. There is no real feedback to child and parents.

The amount of homework is very low in that regard that it is actually irrelevant - most homework is too easy and lags behind academic standards. If your kid is way ahead of her class, she will still be forced to complete the same easy homework. Kids who like to learn feel stuck and discouraged at NLE.

Beautiful facility and diverse student body; wonderful front office staff, sweet nurse and a fully engaged PTO. However, while there are great teachers our experience overall was less than positive (4th and 5th grade). We were confronted with exhausted, disconnected, unimaginative classroom teachers. Additionally, our son was bullied relentlessly with the principle, teachers and guidance counselor informed throughout and acknowledging the issue with little ability to serve as change agents. The experience transformed our energetic, over achieving, happy learner into a fearful, introverted erratic student. Our family has relocated frequently due to our careers and we have always found a way to adapt and thrive in our new schools, however, this experience resulted in us seeking a private school alternative for the first time (ever) for our youngest child to succeed (academically & socially). For such an accomplished community what a surprising disappointment to be confronted with such a poor elementary school experience.

Our children's school is amazing, from the front office staff to the teachers and even the custodial crew are invested in making our kids experience the best it can be. A majority of teachers are invested in the teaching our children not just to SOL standards but to standards that will help them transition smoothly into middle and high school. I like the fact my children have exposure to computers, tablets and other technology as well as the traditional learning styles. I would love to see more parents involved in the PTO to learn how much our school does for our kids.

We have 2 kids in Newton Lee and absolutely love the school. We have moved several times in last 5 years and this is the 3rd elementary school for my son, so we know the difference between excellent and mdeiocre schools. As with everywhere, some teachers in Newton Lee are better than others. But overall its a great school with an outstanding Principal and staff. Its amazing to see how solid parent involvement is, diversity is also a plus factor. In case we ever move, we will definitely miss Newton Lee.

Wholeheartedly disagree with the totally subjective post belowl Newton-Lee has quite a diverse population. Why would the staff choose to treat this one person differently? And why would they treat the same person suddenly better when they wanted to enroll their child? This is not a private school. This is not the Ritz. You will not recieve white-glove service at the front desk. They will not receive more money if you enroll your child. In fact, it will only add to the overcrowding situation. Enroll your child somewhere else and leave room for our children who come to school for the excellent education/top-notch staff, extracurricular activities, etc., not the empathy.

Was receieved by the staff with an extremely prejudice "I'm better than you" arrogance, although Newton-Lee has a vast majority of students from different backgrounds. However, when the staff thought I was a parent of a child (on a different occasion) they were extremely friendly and welcoming which really put me off, because I knew it was fake. I am not going to enroll my child into this kind of a school, and have warned my friends from it as well. While the world isn't all one race, gender, nationality, and religion - our children should be taught to be open-minded and accepting of people's differences. From this school, they will simply be taught to be rude/arrogant to diversity, unless it compromises their status. I was astonished by how rude they were before, compared to how friendly they were when they thought I was going to enroll my child in this school. Everyone else's review is solely based on being receieved by the staff as a parent.

Unbelievable school community with a very dedicated staff. Just look at the parking lot before and after school. The lot still has many many staff cars long after the day is over and before it even begins. They are dedicated to providing the very best for the students. My child has benefitted greatly from the team approach and has really blossomed at Newton-Lee. The events are of very high quality, especially the Music programs and their annual field day is always tied to a curriculum theme. There is so much good to say about this school. Its is an excellent learning community! Take a walk down the halls sometime, the displays are just amazing!

Newton-Lee is an amazing school witha wonderful Principal, Administration & Teachers/Staff. They are ALL very dedicated to the best education for all students! We have been very happy with all aspects of NLE. My husband is always impressed with the PTO events and how much school participation there is from students and parents! We love it at Newton-Lee Elementary!

Newton-Lee is a great school! My kids have attended in private schools before and I have to say that we didn't experience any quality issues with this school. We are very pleased and our kids love this school. The teachers and staff are friendly and firm when needed.

What happened to my review? I said nothing that was against the review guidelines. I said that Newton Lee expects a lot from the children and parents. I said that an average student may struggle to keep up if they don t have a lot of support at home. I said that I get frustrated when trying to help my child because so much has changed since I was in school. I agreed with another review here that a staff member in the main office is very rude to both parents and students. I said the PTO is excellent. The majority of the teaching staff and the administration are excellent as well.

My 4th grader has been attending since kindergarten. Each and every year I am amazed with the academic standards and the sincerity of the faculty and staff.
