Our daughter is in her second year as a teacher at Hutchison, and weve visited the school many times and done some volunteer work there. This large school with students from many countries is exciting and vibrant. The administration, office staff, support staff, and teachers are dedicated to providing students with a quality education and many extra activities to bring success and pride to them.
The school does an excellent job in communicating with families, providing translations in Spanish and other languages. There are many evening and weekend events for students and families to enjoy, including those sponsored by local charities including Girls on the Run, She Believes in Me, and other community partners.
The building is in good condition, with large outdoor play areas, and abundant parking ( a rarity at most schools,)
Fairfax County Public Schools are top rated among Virginia school systems.

The new Principal is doing her best to uplift the standard of this school. The teachers seem to be nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. It's the demography that is not really helping to achieve the overall better standard. Hopefully, things will get better.

My daughter received a good learning environment at this school. Teachers are very cooperative and hardworking. They follow up with kids on regular basis to reach them to grade level. My daughter completed three years of school here and we are very satisfied. For parents who go with rating, please don't worry. You will child will receive an excellent education environment.

Hutchison ES has an incredibly welcoming atmosphere for students and families. The leadership team and teachers are clearly dedicated to the growth of all students. This school is awesome!

There is a mix of teachers by ethnicity, experience, and languages spoken. Which is good, because there is a heavy transient population so children have teachers to look up to "like them".

Principal Lonnett has really turned around the school over the past few years. He and his leadership team have turned it into a warm, welcoming place where you want to spend time with your children. Additionally, stats show the scores are jumping across all grades and all disciplines.

The first thing we noticed was how welcomed we were. The teachers are open-armed and excited about what they do. The principal and his leadership team were happy to engage with us about our concerns and share their plans for the future of the school and how it fits into the neighborhood. The activities have been awesome, from the art show to the monthly parent coffee. Hutchison's "2" rating is an example of how hard it is to show improvement, but walk through the halls of this school and you will see the clear difference!

I have 2 kids at this school we have been very happy.

Kids coming back from Elementary still can't even do the alphabet or write their own name. I'm not sure why any parent would rate highly when the school is graded at a 2/10. The problem is the demographics of the school is mostly latino. Hence the first few years are focused on bring english as a second language speakers up to par. So if you child is a native english speaker then they are not really learning much. Your best option if you live within this vicinity is to put in for the lottery into Lake Anne Elementary School which performs significantly better. The only downside is you will have to provide the transportation to Reston where Lake Anne is located.

Fairfax County has a great program to address kids with special needs. This is at the county level and not specific to Hutchinson Elementary
Posted: January 3, 2017
Why would the school have a 2/10 if leadership was effective. The kids should be performing at a higher level.

Clearly the great schools report card showing a 2/10 demonstrates this enough
Posted: January 3, 2017
The school isn't doing that well, parents should consider getting your kids into the lottery to place your kids into Lake Anne Elementary. This allows kids to also have Spanish included into the schooling for both english and non-english speakers.

Wow, the teachers at this school are definitely one-of-a-kind. I am always amazed as I enter the building and see so many children that speak many different languages and come from very different backgrounds all respected, valued and given a top-notch education. My daughter is in a melting pot classroom of 22 3rd graders from students that just came to our country, to students that have lived in Herndon their entire lives. The teacher is able to teach each child in math and reading at each students' level. My daughter is a strong reader, however, struggles in math. Her teacher has helped her to gain confidence in numbers and her reading level went up 2 levels and it's only October! I'm very impressed with this school.

Hutchison is a great school with a highly qualified and dedicated teaching staff. Yes, last year there was an outbreak of lice, but that happens at every school. I have one child that went there (now in 7th) a 4th grader and a 1st grader. Each teacher the kids had always went above and beyond to reach each child. They have many programs at the school from remediation to enrichment. My children have developed wonderful friendships and acceptance of many cultures. We love the Hutchison community.

Horrible lice problem! My daughter basically had it from April through to end of the year, despite me getting rid of it numerous times, hundreds of dollars on shampoo, Robi comb, and had to pay a professional "Lice Lady" to help get rid of it after I (single mom) got it from the kid. UGH! Besides the hygiene issues, my kids were teased and made fun of for SPEAKING ENGLISH and being "different." My 3rd grader never brought home homework, always had a great report card, and then failed her SOLs. SO glad to be moving and getting my kids OUT of this horrible school.

The education is sub par at best. The lice problem is out of control. My daughter came home with lice 4 times this year alone. We had to buy special shampoo that helped prevent lice. She brought home report cards with grades in outstanding achieve but less then outstanding in effort. If my daughter has to put forth no effort to achieve outstanding, I think that may be something the school should be concerned with. She was in the first grade this past year. She brought home a homework packet every week and one of the pages was 100 squares that she had to put numbers 1-100 in. She got it on the first try. Were there other students that couldn't count by the end of the first grade? The homework packet was supposed to be for the whole week and she would finish everything in about a half hour. None of the school could agree on the schedules and they were quick to reprimand the parents if you followed the wrong staff members instructions. The principal... don't even know how the principal was.

On a surprise visit to special education class. We were disappointed to see class teacher just relaxing in one corner and substitude was yawning. Children lying on the floor, another was sitting by folding his legs on the chair, hiding head in both knee. This incident was brought to the knowledge of young asst. Principal. God alone knows, what action was taken. You can imagine yourself and rate this school yourself. This may not be the only one incidence.//////////

There are very few teachers, they who do not want to give feed back to parents, even you send e-mails. They never reply. But they make big pump and show in class to advertise themselves and to impress the parents. They hide their weakness through out the year. Their capabilities are finally exposed in the children report cards. Teacher left the school for other country.
