Our daughter has grown so much in her first year with Edlin. The teacher:student ratio is the best weve seen (1:6) when exploring private options. The teachers are so invested in the success of the students, and really push them on an accelerated curriculum.

Diana and Gloria are outstanding partners leading the school. Extremely organized and passionate about ensuring the families feel included. We highly recommend Edlin.

Edlin School has been an exceptional experience for our family. From day one, the staffs warmth, professionalism, and respect for students and parents have stood out. The teachers are deeply dedicated, fostering both academic excellence and personal growth while maintaining a culture of kindness and collaboration.

The classical education program is outstanding, especially the language instruction in Latin, French, and Spanish, each taught with passion and depth. The physical education, arts, and music programs complement the academics beautifully, helping students grow in confidence, creativity, and teamwork.

The school markets itself well, but the reality falls short. While small class sizes are advertised as a benefit, theyre more likely the result of declining enrollment, some graduating classes are barely a dozen students. Leadership is limited to just a couple individuals, neither of whom have the background or capacity to run a high-quality private school.

Theres no real administrative team, no active parent organization, and limited opportunities for student enrichment beyond the classroom. Parents are rarely engaged, and the school community feels disconnected.

Before enrolling, ask questions like:
Who provides oversight and long-term planning?
What programs or services are missing compared to other schools in the area?

This is a school with a boutique price tag, but little of the structure or substance youd expect. For what youre paying, you can likely find a school either public or private that offers more stability, resources, and support for your child.

Edlin is a wonderful school with loving faculty and staff. My child was loved and respected. My child thrived in the care of the teachers and they were responsive to his needs. The school offers a spring break trip to all the students and plenty of opportunities for family engagement. They take meticulous care in accepting children into the school and really trying to balance the classrooms. They are usually spot on with their assessments of children and have excellent judgement. When you walk into Edlin, it feels like home. Go and visit! Speak with Mrs. Small or Mrs. Dumont. Look at how the big kids know the smaller kids names and take care of them its truly community in its purest form. The internet has a way of being one sided so I implore you to call them up, stop by the school, and see why we continue to send our kids there!

Edlin is a truly remarkable school community.
Weve had multiple children attend Edlin, and from the very beginning, it has felt like a familyone that genuinely cares about both the academic and social-emotional needs of each child.

We spent years searching for the right schoolone that could challenge our gifted children while also providing the support they needed in other areas. Finding Edlin felt like hitting the jackpot.

Our children thrived here. They not only excelled academically but also loved going to school each day. The administration and teachers consistently went above and beyond to support their educational and emotional growth.

When it came time to choose between private and public schools, our children made the decision themselves. They chose Edlin, saying directly that the best education they could get was here.

Now, they are more than prepared for high schoolconfident, capable, and well-rounded.

We are deeply grateful to the leadership, staff, and teachers at Edlin for providing such a strong curriculum and for laying a solid foundation that will benefit our children for years to come.

Edlin provides excellent teachers, electives and small class sizes that allow my child to move ahead. We have loved our 7 years at Edlin & are continually impressed with the math department led by Christy Nicholas in particular. She spearheaded data science for the first time ever at a middle school in Virginia. Impressive!

Edlin is the best kept secret! Its small and tucked away so it doesnt get the visibility other schools do but it is an amazing experience for bright and gifted kids. The education is better than any of the well known private/gifted schools in the area but the tuition is reasonable and the small environment provides a better experience for the kids (and parents). The school genuinely cares about parent feedback and directly addresses concerns. They work hard to provide great clubs and trips even though they dont have the infrastructure a big school has. The specialty teachers (music, art, PE, computer) are amazing! The principal, Gloria, is incredible and has worked to bring in new teachers, curriculum, and a vision for education that the school can be proud of. The administration is responsive and thoughtful. They are a good partner for educating your child and respect boundaries unlike the public system. I would highly recommend taking a tour to see Edlin for yourself.

Having transferred our daughter from public school, we are seeing a huge difference in the engagement from the teachers and staff and the positive impact it has had on our daughter. The small class sizes are a huge benefit to meeting the children's individual needs. While a small private school may not be able to handle children with significant special needs, our daughter has been able to manage her ADHD far better at Edlin than she could in the larger classes in public school. The teachers have been great about working with her and making her feel at home in a new school environment.

Edlin has been our saving grace!!! The small classes, excellent teachers, and supportive staff recognize each child's unique gifts and talents and helps them to thrive! I currently have two kids at Edlin in 8th and 5th grade. We've attended for the past three years and joined when FCPS went remote during COVID. I was rightfully concerned that remote learning was not the right choice and wanted a school that was willing to be in-person, which Edlin was pioneering. Both my kids were in the Level IV AAP program at FCPS and I did not consider them challenged to their full potential. The transition to Edlin was tough at first, in that they had some catching up to do in Spanish, English and Latin. But after the first 6-8 weeks they were actively engaged, excited to attend, and proud of their strides. The teachers worked with our children individually and recognized and encouraged their needs and strengths. My kids leaned hard into the Latin courses, novel and Shakespeare studies, increased field trip opportunities, and the exciting electives offered. The high school counseling is also a competitive strength as they recognize how advanced the kids are at 8th grade, compared to their peers, and the administration is well equipped to prepare and support the students in the highly competitive high school admissions process. Our 5th grader will be returning in the 2023-2024 school year and we look forward to his remaining 3 years at Edlin.

I have 2 children in Edlin school. Our kids have been through K4 and now up to 3rd grade. We have had amazing teachers all throughout. The curriculum is very advanced and it is truly for gifted kids. They learn Spanish, Latin, music and art. The new ownership really gets it. They have children in the school and are always interested in how they can make our lives easier. They are very responsive. Its a small school so it really does have a family feel. For working parents, the extended hours are so convenient.

We recently joined the Edlin family and our son is in Kindergarten. It's been a great experience so far for my son and us as parents. Edlin has an amazing curriculum that keeps the kids academically challenged, but also promotes creativity and individual talents. Every Friday, my son comes back home with his backpack full of worksheets, projects, artwork and science experiments.

Edlin's curriculum is challenging in both STEM and language and arts, but at the same time, keeps the young kids very engaged by including hands-on activities such as various science experiments, designing your own circuit on a paper, writing about who you want to be, and using artwork to assist language learning. I'm so impressed by my son's learning development in less than a year.

Edlin's curriculum is also very well-rounded. It provides exposure to various languages (Latin, French, Spanish), different sports and motor skills, advanced music theory and immersive music education ("Kids on Broadway" performance was a blast!).

Last but not least, the Edlin community is very friendly and inclusive. From the owner, principal, teachers, administrative staff to PTOs and families, all of us are keeping our communications open, supporting each other, and making sure the children are continuously growing and enjoying learning at Edlin.

Edlin is a very small gifted & talented school. We are relatively new to this school and have a child in the first-grade class who seems to be doing well and enjoying school. Her improvement in the 1st grade alone is quite impressive. The small classroom size really is an advantage. The teachers have been very responsive to all comments good and bad and have been working closely with us whenever our child needed additional help. All students from K4(PreK) take a second language 4 times a week and studies Latin once a week. This we found as a unique trait in the Edlin curriculum as studying foundational languages such as Latin or Greek helps students study romance languages and vocabulary used in modern sciences. Edlin does challenge its students to perform at their best. In my interactions with other parents, this is seen as a positive rather than a negative. Our daughter seems to enjoy being challenged. She is working hard but also seems to be immensely enjoying herself at the same time. The community is somewhat tight-knit and we have found it to be welcoming to new families. As for the new management I have personally found no issues. There is a lack of sports but it is a STEAM-focused school and there are enough extracurriculars in that area for a well-rounded student.

I did see a disheartening review about the first-grade class and that has not been our experience at all. I wasn't aware that the new students in the first-grade class are being tutored. However, I can understand that new students may need additional help to catch up when they join a gifted school. Especially if the class as a whole is ahead of the curriculum. For example, the current first-grade class already advanced to studying the second-grade math curriculum in the middle of the school year. Therefore, I assume any new student joining in the next school year may need additional help to catch up to the rest of the class. However, I do not agree that it is the incompetency of the class teacher and feel that it's an unfair judgment. As for comments such as "classroom run like a zoo", they are 6yr olds and they have fun. As a parent, I would be worried if they didn't.

Finally, if you are considering this school I highly recommend touring the school during school hours. Every child has a unique experience and therefore use your instincts as a parent who knows your child best. We are very happy with our decision and feel fortunate to have found such a good fit for us.

The school is not worth the money. There are some good teachers, but if you dont get them, your child will get left behind. The first grade class is the worst.

My child attended last year and they are not learning ANYTHING new. All of the other students that did not attend Edlin last year are in tutoring, because the 1st grade teacher is incompetent. The classroom is run like a zoo. With only 6 students in the classroom, there should be ZERO reason any of these children need tutoring.

I have witnessed the teacher carrying children around like babies. She has no control over her students. Listening to the teacher at parent teacher night, she wasnt even able to stay on topic. No wonder the children arent learning, shes inconsistent.

I am looking for another school for our daughter. Ive heard 2nd grade has good teachers, but third grade is meh. We have heard public school is a better option than Edlin at this point. After speaking to other parents, VERY disappointed.

This school is a hidden gem. Each year since the new administration has been in place, the changes have been so positive and welcomed. Our family is so happy we found Edlin. The classes are small and intimate which allows for more in-depth learning. The teachers care about what is best for each child. We have had so many go above and beyond with their teaching for our children. We cannot say enough good things about the new administration. They are transparent and have an open door policy which wasnt the case so much before. Its sad to see negative reviews as this school is truly a gem and is only going to get better with the new leadership.

The teacher quality is surprisingly poor, teachers are untrained and poorly equipped to deal with children. There are a handful of good ones but unless you get one of those, your child will have to deal with a low quality teacher who otherwise would never get hired in the public schools. The school is not accredited and for this price point there are better schools. Would not recommend.

.Our son has been attending this school for 2 years and has grown tremendously. The curriculum is well developed and focuses on STEAM. They also teach foreign language 5 days a week starting from K4. With a 15:1 ratio you cannot beat it. Very Happy from this standpoint. The administration could use some improvements in regards to the management of the operations side.

I am fairly new to this school (couple years), but I can honestly say that this is one of the worst private schools weve experienced, primarily because of the management. Theyre nice individuals but do not have any experience or expertise in operating a school. Many of the teachers are fine and work hard for the kids, but not all. And by the way - since its a private school, teaching certifications and degrees are not required. The teachers unfortunately work in a difficult environment (will never admit publicly but privately, youll get a different story). Under new mgt, potentially sound learning place; but under this mgt, absolutely not. Its unfortunate for the kids. Lastly, I dont have an axe to grind - I was hoping this would work out for our family, but sorry it hasnt. Just sharing so other parents are aware.

Theoretically the official policy is great - each academic subject has an assigned day of the week for tests, and no 2 subjects are supposed to give a test on the same day. Wonderful! But the quantity of homework, esp. early in the week (Mondays/Tuesdays), is very high compared with the equivalent grade level in the public schools. So there are definitely some late nights!

Excellent School in Reston Virginia. There are plenty of privates schools now, but they all pop ups and who know if they stay in business or not. Edlin School is almost 30 years old. If they were not delivering the best results, they would not be there for almost 30 years. This is our 3rd year at the school, every year has been a great year. My daughter loves her teachers every year. Every year, we meet outstanding teachers, who love to teach and are professionally well trained and have years of teaching experience. The class sizes are incredible 10:1 or 12:1. when I read to my daughter non fiction books, she always has comments or can always add more to the subject. She surprises me all the time with the amount of knowledge that she is gaining at Edlin. When we meet other parents or other students from other schools, they are all so impressed with our kids at Edlin. Frankly, after reading the reviews, I believe, the negative views were very far from the truth. This is a unique school, where everyone knows everyone and is very respectful. The director, always speaks with a calming voice and is always very helpful. The front desk is always available to help. Teachers know the students so well, that at any given time, when the parents see them, they can up date the parents about their children. furthermore, my daughter is extremely happy and well aware that she is getting an exceptional quality of education and she is proud of that. As far as rich, spoiled student that were mentioned in the negative review, we have not met any yet. Yes, there are some very affluent parents at school, but they are all very well educated and know the value of good education as well as discipline. We are very happy, if you are interested, go for a visit, give them a call. Find out for yourself, that is the best way!

Room for improvement: After school programs are generally bad / ok / limited options.
Cons: Extended afternoon care is $28 per day and $1 per minute after 6 PM. That is why they lost 1 star for that greediness/ripoff.

We have been at Edlin for five years now. This is a school that parents have chosen despite good public schools, and have made the decision year after year to pay extra for their children's education. We do it because we continue to believe that it is the best place for our children. No school is perfect, but Edlin is a truly special institution, made up of wonderful teachers, students, parents and administrators. The school is responsive to the needs of each child, and does make a signifanct effort to get to know each child and their families. Unfortunately, below, there are a number of posts dated August 30, 2015. I suspect they are from the same parent, one who has brought her own agenda and personal issues into the school. All schools have such parents, who can be rather disruptive, but luckily, at Edlin, they are few and far between. If you are considering private school education, I encourage you to put those negative comments aside and take a tour to see for yourselves what a special place Edlin is.

Our children have been at Edlin for 3 years and have had a great experience. Edlin provides a tremendous education and, by far, the best value of any private K-8 school in the Northern Virginia area. The teachers challenge their students to work to their potential. The school offers an impressive curriculum that includes: Latin, Spanish or French, Music, Computers/Graphic Art/Programming, Science, and Art. Our family is impressed with the teacher quality at Edlin. The teachers give personal attention to each child and the classes are broken out by the students ability level rather than their grade level. For instance, each class has 3 or 4 different reading and math levels. We have found the teachers to be very kind and loving to their students. They even take the time to come to birthday parties. The aftercare and extracurricular programs at Edlin are also impressive and offers a wide array of classes, music lessons, and sports. Some of these programs include: Chinese, Math Crunchers, Robotics, Piano, Orchestra (Violin and most other instruments), Photography, STEM, lacrosse (boys and girls), field hockey (boys and girls), tennis, cross country, basketball, soccer, woodworking, cooking, jewelry making, and much more. The students also go on numerous field trips and have a yearly spring break trip to an area where they can practice the languages they are studying. Last years trip was to Madagascar and this years trip is to the Galapagos. For a small school, they are consistently outperforming other schools in language and science competitions. In 2015, Edlin students-
1. Won the Mid-Atlantic Future City Competition
2. Had 4 students rank 2nd and 3rd place in Fairfax Countys Science and Engineering Fair Physical Science and Engineering
3. Had numerous students rank 1st through 10th place nationally on 2015 National Foreign Language Exams, where they competed in Spanish, French and Latin against middle school, high school and college students. One Edlin student received a perfect paper in Latin
I would highly recommend Edlin if you have a child that loves to learn and has the ability to learn at a fast pace. Most importantly, our children love going to school every day. Edlin is a fantastic school from top to bottom, and their students have shown great success. Do yourself a favor and check out the school, you will be glad you did.

By time they finish in the 8th grade they have finished the first two years of high school French or Spanish and first year of Latin. They compete in national competitions against high school students and win awards.
The school also emphasizes music, providing orchestra, band and singing as electives, and each grade performs in a musical or a play at least once a year. The sixth grade class acted out scenes from Richard III and the seventh grade did A Midsummer Night's Dream, plays by Shakespeare. The fifth and sixth grade students camp in a cabin for three days in the Spring, enjoying team building exercises, survival skills, a hayride and campfire, along with games, canoeing and archery. Seventh and eighth grade students take a week-long trip to North Carolina to study the importance of tidal habitats in Edlins Sound and Sea program.
Equally important to raising happy children is acknowledging birthdays, holding a Halloween parade, and celebrating national holidays all of which Edlin does well, reminiscent of my own childhood, and increasingly absent from the public school system today. At Edlin, it is not a crime to celebrate a birthday with a cupcake.
Some reviewers complained about a few teachers. Are there problem teachers? Yes, as in any environment. Have I talked to the director about them? Yes. It is better to make an appointment with her to discuss problems and not ambush her in the hall or ask her at the last minute for things. As for the problems with the principal described in a prior review, the details are different than that reviewer implies. Did he have a problem outside of school? Yes. Is he addressing the issue? Yes. Was he a good principal? Yes. Just a bad situation for a good man, appropriately handled by the school when the situation was fully understood.

I read some of the negative reviews of Edlin School, and have decided to complete the picture. Yes, Edlin is a small school and they do have their problems, but all schools do. My kids have been getting a great education there, and when I compare how they are doing with their counterparts in other schools, I feel great! I would stack up the quality of the education my children are receiving next to anyone. I just received their end of the year testing and my children tested in the 97th and 99th percentile when compared to other students their grades. Their math, reading, science and social studies are at least 5 grade levels ahead.
Are other schools doing more programs or activities? Yes, but their tuition is $10,000 more a year and they are larger schools so more students. The teachers and administrators at Edlin knows every child in the school, which makes for a genuine feeling of community and warmth. My kids are excited about learning, and they feel safe and loved at this school.
When my son finished K-4, not only was he reading, but he was reading chapter books. The science program is very advanced. In second grade, my son dissected an owl pellet and a chicken wing. In sixth grade, my son dissected a frog, squid, pig heart and a sheeps brain. Lots of hands-on science, educational field trips, and in-school speakers, and students are not afraid to ask questions. Guest speakers have complimented the children on the thoughtful interaction, and the quality of their questions.
Language arts is typically good, there were some issues with grammar, but I think they have been addressed and the program strengthened. Each year students read classical literature in class, including works by Shakespeare. I have seen the same titles listed in other schools, but they are typically read in older grades.
My kids have been challenged by math and in 6th grade my son is in Algebra 1. He is not in the top group, and I know there are students above and below him. The point here is that the classes are small and targeted to the students level, and teachers not only work with them in class, but if they are struggling, they will work with them after school. Start with that the school has tremendous potential - there are some excellent teachers, which could serve as the foundation for growth. However, the downside (or the barrier) is the Administration - does not motivate the students and the teachers. If you're looking for a new school, be very aware. Things to ask about during a visit: teacher hiring process; teacher training/certification; overall processes; teachers teaching subjects that are completely new to them; technology integration. Lots of potential; but terrible management holds everything back.

My child had a teacher who had checked out (never mind that it was topic she had never taught before) and didn't provide any homework. This is mostly the administrator's fault - not hiring appropriately trained teachers (oh, and not supporting them!!!)

We had great experiences with Mrs. Darensbourg and the K4/5 teachers. We've had very bad experiences with our children once they moved up.

The teachers don't seem to talk to each other so your child may not have any homework for a couple of weeks and then several big things due all at once.

The school doesn't model these attributes. Decisions are made inconsistently and the administration is often rude with parents and kids. It is hard to feel that these core values are important to the school based on its behavior.

Here's the thing about this school; it says it's a gifted and talented school and it's not really. If you are expecting to surround your child with the best and the brightest in the area, you will quickly find you are disappointed. The extra science programs that the students participate in are completely parent-driven. No money or staff are budgeted, and if the parents don't do it, it doesn't' happen. The students might win awards but it's because of the families, and you can't rely on the same program happening from year to year. Many of the teachers do not have any teaching qualifications. They also don't participate in any continuing education. Of course, there are a few good teachers but you can't rely on getting one. There are as many kids with issues as there are G/T kids. There are no special ed teachers; there is no school counselor. The director says that the school will "work with you" but she doesn't really know what she's talking about and just recommends expensive experimental brain training with a group that's not even part of the school. As others have posted, the school isn't accredited. One reviewer commented that it might be related to paperwork and money, but the school would not meet the criteria for accreditation. After trying to work with the school, we are leaving for better options.

It's so hard to find good schools and good teachers, but keep looking. The school might have a great math program for kids who automatically get math, but my kid, gifted in other areas, now has massive wholes in his education. The director knows that he and his math group have had poor teachers for years. Even though she tells people at the onset that students are allowed to learn at their own levels, this isn't true. I was not the only parent who expressed concern about my child's math group but we were treated like sub-standard citizens. A current 8th grade math class that isn't' the top group just had one of the few good math teachers taken out of their class in the middle of the year to teach fourth graders--even though they need the top-notch instruction to graduate on track. I think because the 8th graders are graduating and there is no more money to be made from them, the director doesn't care about them. Just know that you won't get everything you are promised.

This school definitely needs help! They have no accreditation, which didn't bother me at first, but now seeing the quality of my child's teachers as she moves up in the school, really bothers me. My child has been here since first grade and did very well in 1st and 2nd grades. However, during 3rd grade my child starting showing signs of distress, I believe the teacher had a lot to do with this. She was treated very poorly by her teacher in the 3rd grade, called names by her teacher, in front go her class and always screamed at. Unfortunately this teacher is still working at Edlin. Furthermore, management, if you want to call it that, treats the parents as children as well. Parking is ridiculously crazy at the school, and forget parking in a spot in the lot itself, because "its for the teachers", you will get reprimanded if you park there, I did. As mentioned by other parents, the academic program is good, but not great. Edlin follows a more advanced curriculum, and it is not tailored to the individual child's strengths, rather, they are rushed through the subject matters whether they know the material or not. Edlin is definitely not contributing to my child's success.

My child has been in this school since Kindergarten and I have been generally happy. This has been the second year that I have had a complaint about teacher quality, during both years one teacher in particular-one of the two teachers left, one, (I think), remains-and she is startlingly unprofessional and should not be teaching or at the very least should receive training. The main complaint I have about this school is communication with parents, other than that I really like Edlin and my child is very happy there. The curriculum is good, much better than what I witnessed at the public schools and the children are challenged by some teachers. My child feels loved at this school and the kids really watch out for each other. The only other complaint that I have is that the administration really needs to consider the quality of some of the teachers they have recently hired and the quality of the programs they are selling to parents, in particular, after school activities and summer camp-the cost is outrageous and the camp is substandard.

I agree with the May 23rd, 2013 post. The teacher quality is widely varied, from poor to good. The class size is advertised as small, but the director keeps adding students regardless of whether they can keep up with the work. One of my children was asked to keep an eye on a classmate to make sure that he does his in-class work. Apparently, there were other kids in the class that could not keep up with the work. There are rich spoiled kids and kids with lots of issues who disrupt the class. One of my kids was threatened with a fist by a classmate. The academic program is good, but not great. Edlin follows a more advanced curriculum, but it is not tailored to the individual child's strengths. My child was tested in the beginning of the school year and placed accordingly. However, when the year went on and my child advanced more than the rest in the group, the teacher refused to move the child up to the next level, telling me that the director had said to finish the material in that level. As a result, my child came home complaining for the remaining half of the year that the subject was easy.

We've got two kids in Edlin and have been thrilled by the education delivered. Class sizes range from 11:1 to 15:1 and the personal attention can't be beat.

We had absolutely WORST experience with this school. First of all, they do not have any accreditation. That itself should be a red flag. We believed what they said - unnecessary paperwork and added cost etc. But found out the reality the hard way. The teacher quality is poor to mediocre. (Ms.Young is obviously an exception. ) The class size is small and they will keep adding students till the end of the year. Basically, they'll admit anyone who has the ability to pay the tuition. We have seen rich spoiled kids and kids with lots of issues in different classes. Their academic program is average. Nothing great. There are many good private schools in DC metro area. Even public schools in No. VA are better than Edlin. I would not recommend this school to anyone.
