The bullying is horrible it's swept under the rug . My daughter hate this school my son father took him out of the school. The bullying on the bus is even worse. Let alone staff are friends with the most popular kids and allowing the bullying. There is no help I will be homeschooling AGAIN!

My kids attended this school for two years before I finally pulled them. When I say they hated this school, it's an understatement. We're a military family so they have attended a few different schools and this was their least favorite. My daughter had issues with students and a teacher due to the fact she's agnostic, religion should not have even been discussed in the classroom and an adult surely shouldn't tell the entire class "to pray for her". My son has an IEP, I do believe it was followed but I feel that my concerns were always dismissed. My kids both were straight A students and I can assure you they were just pushed through and neither deserved the grades. My daughter tested at a Kindergarten reading level in 4th grade at her new school after receiving straight As the year before. Parental involvement is non-existent and there's no sense of community.

This is our first year at Andrews. My son is second grade and I can say that the teachers like Mrs. Leland are amazing and responds to situations quickly. The second grade assistant principal is very much present and stops to contact parents immediately. They care about the kids and I’m excited about where my son is. Of course no school is perfect but for parents who choose to be involved their team is ready and willing to meet you where you are.

My son looks forward to school and is happy with where he is.

This school is horrible. They have mold everywhere. My children come home not feeling good every day . For new students going here it is going to be stressful to find your class . It is a big school and the bullying is horrible . I’m never putting my kids in this school again and I suggest that you do not . DO BETTER HAMPTON CITY SCHOOLS

Would not recommend this school to anyone! The lack of parental involvement coupled with the teachers' lack of supportive administration has lead to an out of control student body. New students who are unfamiliar with this type of environment will be highly stressed as they go throughout their day. Teachers are highly stressed because they receive no support in curbing unwanted behavior. Elementary students are allowed to become violent with teachers/staff (such as hitting, slapping, throwing of chairs) and are sent back into the classroom. The hallways during dismissal are chaotic as the upper elementary and middle school students run through the hallways screaming profanities.

Our daughter is in 3rd grade and on a pre-K math level. I have tried for nearly a year to get her help. They refuse to even test her for math disabilities. Countless meetings and zero help. She has had no progress and they flat out refuse to help her or even TEST her. Worst experience I have ever had in 36 years of parenting and dozens of schools. Shocking.

At Hunter B Andrews I've had my UPS and my downs but even when there was conflict and disagreements it was always quickly resolved and brought to a solution that all parties agree to. They have great tutoring to prepare the students for Sol and all the stuff is nice and works together my kids love this school

my son has been at andrews since kindergarten. he will soon be going into 4th grade. he loves the school and has loved all of his teachers. i also have been pleased with his education and his teachers. the family engagement specialist, ms howard is amazing! the key to successful education is to be involved as a parent and keep the communication lines open with a open mind and positive attitude! all of the staff including food service and custodial, are wonderful. yes, there are teachers that yell, there are kids who "misbehave". isnt that everywhere? i love andrews and am glad we are there

My son's teacher's acted like they were all about communication in the beginning of the school year, and had my child's best interest in mind. I noticed a change in my son and in his confidence as the school year progressed. He only cared about getting green or blue on the color chart. Now he only worries about getting points on class dojo and freaks out when he gets a point taken away. Whoever the other parent was with their 4 year old from the march 1st review, my son is experiencing the same things. He calls himself bad and stupid, and doesn't want to go to school anymore because his teachers call him bad. He also is getting bullied. Administration only cares about themselves and their teachers. I have heard several teachers in many different occasions YELLING at pre-k and kindergarten children because they are not walking hands behijd their backs, bubbles in their mouths. Everything at that school is about controlling their behavior to make the teachers look good and staff look good. DO NOT send your child to this school if you care about their emotional well being.

My son started off this year excited to go to class and happy. As the year has progressed he started obsessing over the color chart and anything but green would send him into a panic. He started telling me that he couldn't go back to school because they didn't like him and he was bad. He's 4 and shouldn't have a few bad things follow him all day and then home. We are pulling him out at the end of the week to try and salvage what we can of his confidence and opinion of school.

We LOVE this school. Although the school hasn't scored perfect 10's across the board, I am one parent who is very satisfied with Andrews. We relocated to VA from NY, where my 4th grade son was working with the 'Common Core' Methods of learning. He was miserable. Cried everyday, didn't want to go to school, begged to be home schooled.. after relocating, I feel as if my son found himself again. He has made friends and is participating far more than he has in past years. Andrews is a newer school, built just a handful of years ago, so I feel it only fair for the community to not only understand that, but give the school a fighting chance to grow. The teachers and committee are astounding and being that it is a Title 1 school, there is a lot that Andrews have to offer. I wish that the Art and Music program were a bit more involved. My son never brought home a single art project or piece of work the entire year. Other than that I do see that the school making a positive impact on our students. I am happy with everything Andrews stands for and I wish them the best in their future successes.

Taught there a few years The reviews over 2 stars is more than likely administration. It's a dangerous school; safety of your child 180 days a school year is not guaranteed.
Academics are horrible, specifically grades 6-8. The goal for grades 6-8, no fights or security called into a class. Disruptive students are 99% returned to the class. I rate this school as one of the poorest in an already horrible school district. Remember, I was inside and my review is direct observation. F

The School is terrible. I went to pick up my daughter for an appointment and they could not locate her. It took them 25 minutes to find her. I had to reschedule the appointment. No one even seemed to care.

Great school, my pre-k is at Andrews this year and he loves it!! We also had 2 other children at armstrong elementary and we withdrew them and put them at Andrews!!! My kids love Andrews !!! Great staff and the school is so nice;)

My daughter is in kindergarten and at the start of the year it was a VERY rough go. The teacher was inattentive to my daughter. My daughter was learning NOTHING, but coming home looking like she rolled in her food tray, ripping her clothes apart and writing all over herself. I scheduled a meeting with the principal and he was VERY receptive to my daughters needs and my wants. Since going into her new classroom my daughter is learning at an amazing rate and coming home clean. Its not a bad school overall, they just need to get rid of the bad teachers. Even if the first teacher isn't bad with all the kids, she was with at least one and you just dont become a teacher and treat children better or worse than the others. Thank you to the GREAT teachers who put our children first no matter what!

After 1 year, I really wish we could change schools. The children are wild, but my real problem is with the faculty. It is run more like a prison than a school. I go up for lunch and volunteer often and personally witness the adults yelling and screaming at the children for what I deemed as minor things (forgetting to take a milk carton to the trash at lunch, talking) and this was the FIRST day off school. Trying to get into the school is crazy. Ms. Williams and her assistant both have attitude problems and make it difficult to go to lunch or take an item to the class. They also have times when no parents are allowed in the school such as during testing, but never send anything home to let you know. I showed up with lunch for my children and was turned around, and they wouldn't even let my kids get the lunch I had prepared for them. There are also numerous fights and rampant bullying. Nothing is done about it. Teachers also get into fights with parents and students! We are selling our house and moving so we can get our children in a better school. Do not send your children here if you have a choice. Looks pretty from the outside, but it is complete chaos inside!

This school is horrible. The teachers have no control over any of the students. There are daily fights between the students and the teachers and school leadership don't do anything about it. Our daughter was physically attacked by a boy in her class and the teacher told her to suck it up. When we spoke to the principal about it, he assured something would be done, and nothing was. There was even a fist fight between a third grade teacher and one of the parents. The school is out of control. Our daughter will be attending a new school this upcoming year.

andrews is the worst school i've attended out of the many schools i've attended in my whole life. their security does nothing, all they do is sit on their bum all day. it amy look nice but it is disgusting once you go inside the pods. they don't clean the bathrooms right either. if you have any kids who have minor problems, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE... the child(ren) will be made fun of every day and nobody will do anything about it. i am happy to say that i am happly promoted from 8th grade. now i goo to hampton high another bad school, BUT I CONSIDER IT HOME COMPARED TO ANDREWS!!!

This is my son's first year at Andrews (kindergarten). We were pleasantly surprised - amazed actually. The school is huge and very intimidating but all the kids I see navigate the maze with confidence. They halls are loud and bustling - there are 1200 kids- but not out of control. Every teacher/parent/staff member seems to help control any out of line kid. I have also volunteered/attended many events at the school. I am constantly amazed at how committed each and every staff member is to keeping the school running. My son loves his class and all the extra resource classes they have each week. I worked with the guidance department, they were helpful. When my son started having some classroom issues, his teacher and I discussed options and came up with a plan to manage them. This is our third school in the area, first public one. At each school there is always some student that caused more trouble, or a teacher that has a wilder class, or some parent that has made me cringe. There are simply more people at this school thus more opportunity for issues. I do wish they had more playground time.

My God Son has attended this school for 3 years now. He is currently in the 2nd grade and we have been nothing but satisfied with his experiences at Andrews. This school year the school is under a new principal who is very welcoming and determined to put the students education first. The Previous principal was good as well, but the school seems to be going in a new direction with a more active PTSA group..they have hosted events for the Middle School students and worked with the Family Engagement Specialist to host Family Learning Nights. If we as parents want to see change we must become a part of the solution and continue supporting our children and their educators. I love this school and hope we continue to see growth and change!

I subbed one day at this school and will not be back! The middle school students are housed in what is called pods. These pods have their lockers, bathrooms, and several classrooms in an area smaller than my house! The students are rude and disrespectful. When I asked the students to stand for the pledge of allegiance, many chose not too. When I asked another teacher about this, I was told that they aren't "forced" to. That lack of respect is dishonorable to all the military that have served! Security runs rampant around that school trying to contain bad behavior. If the teachers, staff, and administration do not get a handle on the behavior of these students, I don't see any kind of future for them! If you have a choice as to sending your child to an elementary/middle school in Hampton, choose another one. Andrews is not it!

This is my first experience with Hunter B. Andrews School. After hearing such negative views of the school from previous years, I must say that I am impressed with the new direction of the school. The staff is helpful and friendly and the school's administration is supportive. I am an involved parent and work with the Family Engagement Specialist to volunteer at this school. Wonderful! My son attended a private christian school for kindergarten and first grade, which is a more sanitized environment, so my wife and I were concerned about our son's transition to public school. Upon meeting the principal and his teacher, I quickly realized that he would be in an academically challenging, and safe environment. The staff is engaging and polite, and they exhibit a lot of pride in the school. This is due, largely, to the leadership of the principal. My wife and I are extremely satisfied with our experience Hunter B. Andrews School.

As a parent of two daughters, I am very impressed with this school. They are not only being prepared academically but the same values we teach at home are being taught. There are clubs sponsoring various things but one of our favorite is "Tie Day". The young men dress in ties and the ladies in bows to foster professionalism. Both of my daughters teachers hold them accountable to the highest standards and communicate with our family about ways to continue learning. We have attended many wonderful events at this school as a family including the most recent Superhero Night. We are always impressed by the opportunities families have to connect with the school both in the building and in the community. We receive text messages, phone calls and emails reminding and inviting me to upcoming events. We are so thankful to have a school that tries so very hard to establish the foundation of education we want for our daughters. We look forward to watching our young daughter grow in this environment. Keep up the great work teachers and staff!

My autistic child has been pushed to be mainstreamed since he started at this school. He has been bullied horribly, to the point of being cut with the bent metal end of a pencil, having his lunch thrown away by other students, slammed into walls and was even kicked by one of the teachers aid's. After going to the school the teacher was still kept on staff and left with my child again, after assurances that he wouldn't be. This is only elementary school. When he's went to the teachers about bullying while physical incidents were happening he was told it was "just a game", when it obviously wasn't. There are some great teachers there like others have said, but over all the school seems out of control. Bullying and no discipline, also not following his IEP has been an issue for the past 3 years and getting worse every year. He will not be attending anymore. It would be great to see a school like this institute a technique to deal with all the bullying, such as nurtured heart therapy that has shown great improvements in other inner city schools with similar issues. It seems as if the school is turning a blind eye to the out of control student body.

No school is ever going to be perfect for your little one....unless of course you have a lot of money to pay for private school. I feel that the school is what you make of it and it is very important to have parent involvement these days. Teachers here have always been cooperative and very helpful. I have had very pleasant experiences at this school and my child will be entering the 3rd grade and has been attending for 2 years now.

This is the WORST school ever. My child began attending this school in 2011. He was in the 4th grade and another student busted him in the face with binoculars resulting in 7 stiches to the interior of his mouth. My child was being bullied on the bus and walking home from school. This year my child was grabbed by a teacher in the cafeteria resulting in a scratch and bruise on his chest. The students are OUT OF CONTROL and the teachers and administrators are even MORE out of control. I ate lunch with my son in the cafeteria and heard a teacher curse at a student. He even took a child's bag of chips. This is the cafeteria! He has been in 2 additional fights this year. He has NEVER previously had ANY issues in school and he is an A/B honor roll student. Since the teacher put his hands on my son I believe that the administrators are trying to label my son as an agressive child. They refuse to allow me to watch any videos of any of the incidents that have happened. I am obtaining a lawyer and contacting the school board. Do what you can to keep your child from attending this school!!!! I am going to do everything possible to have my son removed from this AWFUL school.

There are only two reviews for this school and unfortunatly I have to second the review dated 8 March 2012. The students are out of control, total disrespect for the teachers, my son is bullied verbally and physically and I dont think the staff has control of the situation. We chose this school because it supposedly has an engineering track for students showing that aptitude, he was chosen from a lottery to attend. I now believe the "engineering program" is a scam to try to bring up the schools SOL stats. My son will not be returning. That being said I have respect for several of the teachers, to bad they are stuck in a re-make of "To Sir with Love" wit Sidney Poitier.

This is a horrible school, despite its shiny, brand new, state-of-the-art exterior. Students use the N-word and F-word freely and the teachers say there is nothing they can do. My child has been bullied and some teachers act as if I am over reacting. And two of my child's teachers have called her class "a bunch of retards" and one called them "buttholes." Bad behavior is the norm. My advice to any parent considering this school is to RUN, don't walk, as far away from this school as possible.
