Coming out of middle school (ew smarts mill) I was really scared this school would be the same, but it has pleasantly surprised me! the teachers are great, most of the students are also ok, sports program is wonderful! I am in cross country and I love it.

I have two children currently at Tuscarora. One in 12th grade and one in 10th, doing track, cross-country, and volleyball. They are both excellent guitar players at this point - the school wins first place in all the guitar competitions. Tuscarora also really pushes students to take honors, dual enrollment, and AP courses. There are a lot of electives to choose from too, but Study Hall is required for all grades, which really only gives them one elective a year. Lots of Seniors only go half day, because they took so many high school classes in middle school. If they go half day, they don't have to do study hall. Study Hall also isn't required if they go to the Academies of Loudoun.

The sports programs are well run, and the teams for track/cross country are excellent and produce many Division 1 runners for college scholarships. The volleyball program does not produce the same talent, but my daughter loves doing it because it's fun. The school has won a lot of awards for their music and drama departments, and overall, I am glad my kids go there. Lots of kids from there go to schools like Virginia Tech. My friend's daughter graduated last year and got into Princeton, so academics at Tuscarora are rigorous enough. The forced Study Hall is something I HATE about the school, but the councilors have said it is county policy. I do wish there was more space in the schedule for electives like Art, but I think that is county policy rather than a school issue.

Don’t let negative reviews fool you. Tuscarora High School is a great school with an awesome staff and wonderful students. The staff is welcoming, engaging snd cares about each individual. The student body’s diverse population allows students to make friends easily while having a strong sense of school spirit. The school is spotless and all staff take pride in keeping the school a pleasant place to be. Teachers are helpful and willing to do what it takes to make each student successful. This requires the students to WANT to achieve, so there may be negative comments from parents/students who just aren’t interested in taking responsibility for their learning. The family programs including the Athletic Boosters, PTSO, Performing Arts and Band Parents are top notch and welcoming. This school has such great school spirit and graduates have been very successful and always positive about their alma mater.

Very positive, especially for advanced students where they have some of the best teachers in the county. Extracurriculars are diverse - with excellent coaches for sports teams, and the quality of the music and theatre programs has gotten very strong - even relative to the best of the other LCPS schools.

Homework and readings were assigned to be completed usually nightly. I have to say, if these were done, success in the class was very likely, along with good test scores.

There will always be cheaters in classes, but I felt practically the entire student body completed work that was their own. In terms of good character, I never saw any noticeable presence of bullying in school and I feel most students cared for the well-being of others.

I never saw any presence of consistent bullying on campus. Personally I never had any problems with bullies, though I'm sure they existed like at any school ever. Overall, far better than any other school I attended previously.

As a former student, I wanted to honestly review Tuscarora after seeing a number of negative comments on this site that I didn't feel were indicative of the school itself. Sure, Tuscarora had problems, and there were some teachers that were not as good as others, like any other high school, but I would rate my time there as very good as well as containing some of my favorite memories. I graduated from Tuscarora with honors and earned over a semester's worth of AP credits (all of which I was prepared for from classwork). I currently attend a top-level private university in PA, am a double major, and play a Division 1 sport. I am not unique among Tuscarora graduates for this; I have many friends who also got into highly-ranked colleges and universities and are succeeding. Even though my GPA at college is not as high as it was in high school, I still feel that I was adequately prepared for success in college – from my teachers especially – several of whom I would say taught me more than some university professors. I would challenge anyone who has gone to a "highly-ranked" university, public or private, who has not had at least one professor they didn't like. But, the overall quality of Tuscarora is very good; this is not some poorly-funded school. Everything a student needs for success is available at THS if one looks for it. After and before-school tutoring is available from teachers and older peers for students: something I took advantage, and later, part of. Hate to break it to anyone, but doing well in school requires work outside the classroom. In college, especially at my university, if a student doesn't attend lectures, read required texts, and do assigned works, he/she will fail the class. Students who sit in the back of the class, don't participate, and don't do anything the teachers tell them to do won't do well on exams. This applies to Tuscarora, as well as any school. I am not giving Tuscarora a blanket 5-star approval, but I do not feel certain reviews on this site adequately portray the school’s academic environment or atmosphere. There is no way THS is as bad as the 1-star reviews make it out to be, nor as mediocre as the 2-3-star range given. NoVa has plenty of good schools, Tuscarora is one of them, and a student will do well if he/she wants to.

Many teachers haven't got a clue how to teach, many are rude and unhelpful, Restrooms are always filthy, most students don't even know who the principal is and there is very little school spirit. Two teachers recently lost their jobs. One for making two students make out in class, and the other for innaporopriatly touching a female student. I was an A/B student for the most part throughout middle school and got a few C's in my freshman year. However, I am currently failing many classes due to the poor quality of some teachers and the lack of caring and understanding from counselors and administration. I have never liked school very much but my experience at Tuscarora has made me absolutely hate it.

My children are receiving a quality education at a school with the best school spirit around. Communications have been improving over the past two years which I appreciate. There are active parent organizations including Athletic Boosters, Drama Boosters and the PTSO, so I can become an involved parent in the THS Community. There are always exceptions, however my children admire and look up to their teachers, and have made excellent progress academically. I am proud to be a Tuscarora Husky Parent.

Tuscarora High School has steadily improved after opening six years ago. School spirit in athletics has carried over to the overall feeling the students feel about their school. Next year I will have three students at THS who will be surrounded by good teachers, great role models and excellent guidance counselors. We especially love the mathematics department at Tuscarora HS! They have teachers with a ton of experience who are still excited about teaching the kids. You can tell that the student body, parents and teachers really LOVE supporting and being part of this school. The student body supports their sports teams-lots of school spirit! I'm happy that we have a middle school child that will be going there in the next two years!

The teachers at Tuscarora are very accessible. They frequently stay late and come in early to make sure that the students receive the help they need. There are also some great young teachers that come to everything that the students are involved in. They are supportive in the classroom and out!

My interactions have only been positive and seeing my children successful academically and happy, is worth more to me than the school's test scores. That said, math scores have improved at THS, and I notice information on this site hasn't been updated to reflect that. Tuscarora is a great school in LCPS where students go on to bigger and better things.

I attended Tuscarora High School when it opened in my sophomore year, and then spent three years there before graduating. Like all schools, the teachers were generally of uneven quality, though those in the history department tended to be far better than many of the others. My biggest gripe with Tuscarora was the administration. While they cared deeply about the school and tried to make it successful, their vision frequently was implemented poorly, leading to general discontent from students and faculty alike. I once described attending this school as "an intellectual sleep that provides no rest", and that holds true. Perhaps in the coming years the school will improve, but for now, I am very grateful to have finished attending this school.

I have three children who are in the LCPS school system. A graduate from Heritage, a Senior at Tuscarora, and an elementary school aged child at LES. By far, our worst experience has been at Tuscarora (although while C. Magruder was at LES that was pretty bad). My middle child was bullied by two other children and all they offered was counseling! If PPJ doesn't see it, it didn't happen! For nearly a school year, the bullies were able to physically and socially torment my child to the point where she refused to attend school. Some of the physical bullying was caught on video. Nothing was done to the bullies. They continued to tornment my child to the point where we had to hire a lawyer and threaten to sue LCPS to get her out of THS. LCPS is growing too fast. In order to hire enough staff to teach and run the school, they had to lower their standards. The majority of the upper level administrators are not focused on the students, they are focused on their image. Teachers and administrators are hired, fired, or quit over spring break before the school year ends. Athletics are strong because of the previously lax school transfer rule. It is what it is because of PPJ.

I agree with other reviewers - fantastic community of parents, great athletics, beautiful facilities, awful administration and principal. How PPJ has been able to hold onto that job despite her many mishaps is the big unknown to parents and students alike. Additionally, though some teachers are excellent, there are too many unqualified teachers occupying classrooms as THS. No surprise as few want to work for PPJ. My child did not get a good education at THS, nor did he even care (that's what an oppressive administration will do to a child's spirit). Despite a less than stellar high school performance he was accepted to a good college based on his mediocre grades and exceptional athletic ability, and thank goodness he is excelling academically. When people glorify LC public schools as the best in the nation, I laugh in disagreement due to our experience at this school and the fact that, despite the many complaints, the LCPS administration refuses to do anything to address the issue. Very, very sad.

I have had 3 children go through Tuscarora and have had a great experience. They all have been accepted into wonderful colleges and have been well prepared. The school spirit and the sense of community in this school has been something they should be proud of. The athletic department is top notch! There are some teachers that aren't perfect as in EVERY school out there. The front office and the attendance office are something to avoid and for some reason haven't improved but other than that I would feel extremely comfortable sending my kids to this school.

Thankfully my daughter graduated and is now in college... She hated her time at Tuscarora and she was a good student. I must say the administration was greatly lacking in professionalism. The students were treated as though they were in middle school except for the chosen few that seemed to do whatever they pleased with no consequences. Having 4 children go through the LCPS system I am sad my youngest did not have a good high school experience. Her brothers and sisters remember fondly their time at Loudoun County High School. I hope someone steps in and takes charge of this school.

My child is a Jr at THS. I am hesitant to agree with he lowest reviews here but I cannot agree with the 5 stars. No way. School spirit at THS seems to be good and I think this is due in large part to the strong athletics department. Perhaps the athletics dept got lucky...the school district includes some of very affluent neighborhoods with parents who have been able to afford expensive sports training for their kids. Overall my child has had good teachers but he did experience a horrible Spanish teacher who should not have been teaching and who, with no notice, did not return after spring break. I was forewarned by other parents about the front office staff & have had no problem with anyone there as I've gone in with a sweet attitude -- you have to play the game to get assistance. The guidance office is not great. For example, there was no email or robo-call about the LoCo college fair and this kind of failing is tyipcal for THS. I often go to other schools' websites to get info as THS's is lacking. THS administration could take a lesson from the middle school, Smarts Mill, across the street. THAT school told us about the college fair. Seriously.

Leadership at this school is nonexistent. People at the highest level there will not even return a parents phone call.Despite a 5-0 record the football programs has some very ugly secrets.Players constantly being misused and lied to .They also threaten to speak negative to college recruiters if they speak their minds about being treated unfairly.This program will be exposed.

We are the parents of a Junior at this school and we have an older child who attended Loudoun County High School. For a new school Tuscarora goes out of it's way to create a sense of community for the students. Our child is an honors/AP student who has had a wonderful experience there so far. We've found the teachers and faculty to be very involved and helpful to student's success. I've found the caliber of teachers to be solid .

My time at this school was terrible. Its unorganized and most of the teachers have no idea what they are doing. I'm fairly convinced most of my teachers gave out passing grades just so they didn't have any failing students so it didn't look bad on them. This school is a sad excuse for a Loudoun County High School.

I am so glad my daughter attends this school.She loves her teachers and the majority of her classes are AP. She is involved in the activities. Her friends from neighboring schools always look to come to her school functions because of the lack of creativity of their administration. Please do not judge this school solely on the reviews go out and see for yourself. I have heard the complaints of some parents were based of their bigotted views because of the diversity of the staff and administration. My take on things are if you are not happy their is something called the freedom to choose move your child and find the best fit for them. I give four stars because some of the front office staff could be a little friendlier. Other than that I would reccomend this school it is a safe environment for my child to learn and thats whats important to me.

I have had a student at this school since it first opened, and it has improved some since it first opened, but overall the school is very poorly run. The one thing they have figured out is athletics, which is actually pretty solid. Academics are ok for the most part. Like most schools, teachers are a mixed bag, but unfortunately, the administration sets the tone for the entire school. As far as how to run a school, they do not have a clue. Some examples - graduation was a disaster, with many parents unable to watch their children graduate because they mismanaged ticket distribution. They forgot to order buses for the senior class trip, which did not happen because of this. What makes it worse is that the principal doesn't even seem to care and is completely unresponsive to the parents and students. It is a new school, and bound to get better, but the current principal is not the right person for the job.

Disappointed in this school They refused to take my child out of an AP class to make themselves look good though my child didn't want to take it. The guidance counselors aren't there for the students - they are there for the school. Teachers no longer communicate with parents outside of Clarity and Clarity is not updated. Teachers leave and inadequate substitutes are brought in. Graduation was chaos; they should have moved the band, choir and teachers to the auditorium and show them via screen in the gym to allow actual parents of graduating students in.

Tuscarora High School I honestly am embarrassed to go to this school. I had a math teacher that needed the help of students to answer problems-not because it was part of a lesson to tests students' knowledge, but because she genuinely did not know how to solve it. The entire year she initiated conversations with students that were off topic & often diverted the rest of the classes' attention. She would only teach the bare minimum-what was on the S.O.L. Ironically, there were students who didn't pass. The teacher didn't discipline students-there were kids throwing objects across the room, running around, etc. all while she was teaching, & merely would sometimes laugh & encourage it or meekly tell them to sit down. One teacher curved grades a lot. I had a science teacher who only gave out worksheets the whole year & got the class off topic by bringing in random, off topic objects from his home in an attempt to make himself the 'favorite teacher'. He rarely stood in front of the class to teach & sat at his desk most of the year on the computer, sometimes using it for his personal life. Many teachers model this work ethic & I feel as if I have been cheated of a good education.

The administration does a poor job on connecting with the parents and the students. Grades are not updated in the online tools in a timely manner. New leadership is needed to gain the trust of the parents and students. Most of the teacher try to help the kids when asked.

I have been a student at Tuscarora for almost three full years now. I was a freshman the year the school opened. I, as well as my parents, neighbors and friends, am appalled by the incompetence of the administration (as well as some teachers). It is as if teachers are fired from schools for being so awful, and then are sent to Tuscarora. The attendance people are down right disrespectful towards the students, almost hostile. The admin seems as if though they are working against, not for, the students. Some teachers are personable and caring. Others you just WANT to video tape so your parents believe the stories you share at dinner time. Teachers can give Tusky 5 stars all they want but the only reason I stay at this school is for the student body.

I have had children in Loudoun County public schools for eighteen years now, and we have always been extremely pleased...until now. The administrative staff at Tuscarora is completely incompetent,and often rude and disrespectful to the students and parents alike. Some of the teachers are excellent but they are far outnumbered by teachers who seem to be unable to connect with the students. Also, they fail to grade assignments in a timely manner and when my child was seriously ill, many did not respond to my emails. An inordinate number of teachers have left mid-term, in some cases leaving a substitute to finish the year. This is a poor school in terms of academics and it has a very negative atmosphere. This is well known in the community and we cannot understand why this has not been addressed by the superintendent or the school board. Frankly, I doubt the validity of some of these five star reviews...

This school is terrible. I have only one good teacher, and my other ones are constantly unprepared and unable to teach a subject they are supposedly specialized in. This is my second year at Tuscarora, and I regret not switching because it is only getting worse.

Tuscarora is a model of what other high schools should look like. The expectations for staff and students, the technology innovations and use of communication tools, and the new ideas that are implemented to improve student success are things that other schools will eventually develop. Being able to open and start things from the ground up gave us an advantage of not battling the "that's not how we have always done it" mantra. Because sometimes how things have always been done is NOT the best way to do them - the Tuscarora admin and staff realize that and are willing to try what's best, not just do what everybody else is doing. The students are engaged and respectful to each other and to staff. It feels like a family!

This is our first year at Tuscarora and I have been very happy with all aspects of the school. I have 2 children that have graduated from another Loudoun County high school and the office staff at Tuscarora is by far the friendliest and most helpful I have delt with over the years.

This school has a great group of teachers lead by a strong Principal and Administrative staff. The FIne Arts Programs, Athletic Teams and Academic programs are strong and offer a variety of opportunities for the students. Great school!

I have never seen so many dedicated teachers and administrators in one school. The positive climate and collaboration in each department is incredible. When you put strong leadership with excellent teachers anything is possible.

Just moved here a year ago from living overseas and we've been frustrated with trying to get them to accept language credits, that the Fairfax school would have honored if we chose to live there, as well as other electives that my daughter has finished and has not been recognized by the school. The counselors have not been helpful in finding a solution to make up the foreign language credit that she needs to graduate. Instead of testing my 11th grade daughter in subjects that she has had a multitude of times they put her in a beginning Freshman class, which was such a waste of time that she could have been in a class that she needed to take in order to make up some credits. We are frustrated beyond belief, and now I don't know if my daughter will even get to graduate this year! DON'T SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!! Especially if you have been living overseas. They don't have have the experience to deal with those type of situations. Better off moving to Fairfax.

I came to Tuscarora as a freshmen and was told that it was the hardest year there but i loved it. I had great teachers, especially guitar and history, i had fun with many friends, and it was an awesome year. I learned very well and fit in very well. I always had good grades and actually liked going to school for once. The only thing i didn't like was the principal but that's it. Too bad i might move and have to go to heritage,

Half of the teachers are good, half are bad. As a freshman, it is prominent how much the staff take into account the minds of the student body; and it is not much. The fine arts dept., the science dept., and most of the history teachers are very diligent in making sure students are actually gaining knowledge on their topics. The other departments have 1 or 2 teachers that can teach confidently and correctly. The administration is fair, but can be very strict with unusual rules. This can be proven with the fact that many teachers have been fired or have resigned. Overall, the student body is definitely not oblivious to the lack of care the staff show, but it is also difficult for us to make a change in our school with the staff at Tuscarora.

Administration is unavailable and incompetent. Call, email, stop by and you will continue to wait for a response. Principal is unwilling to listen or consider alternatives.

Its a really great school. My daughter learn a lot and teachers in there actually give us like a second chance.My daughter was really glad to be in this school. Also the staff like trust the students. They don't put that much rules. That's a good thing because the students would go to school because it's fun for them and they classes are fun.
