Deer Park Elementary School

I have a kindergartner at this school and so far am very impressed with how they handle kids with medical issues. My daughter has a variety of medical concerns, the biggest being she has a severe food allergy. Of course sending a 5 year old into a school with something like this is very nerve wracking. However, the school has many precautions in place and lots of well trained staff.


In the classroom, my daughter is thriving. She has become very social, confident, and truly enjoys going to school. You can see how involved her teachers are and that they really care about their students. She has learned so much and we are very impressed with her progress.

I think what I like most is how involved all the staff are. I mean, when I drop my daughter off to school there are many mornings where the principal is out in the line helping kids get out of their cars and into the school building. Most of the teachers seem to know my child's name and take time to interact with her in positive ways. I feel very lucky to have my child attend such a great school with quality educators!

My son attended for Kinder and 1st grade. Initially, I was very unhappy with the school. My son was an advanced academically and they were not able to provide services to support his love of learning. His teacher told me he was disruptive in the classroom so I asked if she could provide more challenging work. The answer was "no, I have students that don't speak English, I can't do anything for him". Very unimpressed. Luckily, in first grade, my son had a wonderful teacher who encouraged and challenged him.

I agree with the no homework policy. We do go over things that was learned already reviewed. We follow teacher recommendations and read at nights. My son enjoys learning and strives to learn through the teachers guidance and creative activities to promote fun learning.

Teachers are very involved. They love and are passionate in helping students. Since we in quarantine, Our teacher Mrs. Morris have made fun learning activities and fun social connections with our classroom family. I have worked in other schools and I have not felt the love and connection like I have a deer park.

Administration and Principal promote a motivational positive behavior inspired strategy. Kids and Teachers love it. Bucky's buck.
My son is extremely motivated in earning a bucky's buck. he will try his best in self control, respect and following directions to to earn his buck. Great actions leads to great habits and Deer Park staff promote this to the fullest. We have seen a huge difference in behavior and maturity in our son. We even do this at home :)

Principal and administrators are willing to help, lead, motivate, encourage, dress up and be silly for their students to strive ahead. They show excellent leadership skills with one another and strive for excellence numerous times.

Positive behavior leads to positive outcome meaning less bullying. Administration promotes positive behavior to motivate students to make better choices. Motivation helps negativity.

I have 2 children in this school. One in 6th grade and the other 4th grade. This school has been great for our children. The staff is very caring and always seem concerned about your child's progress and welfare. I simply don't understand any negative reviews for Deer Park. Both of our children have attended Deer Park since Kindergarten. I have nothing but good things to say about this school.

They have a no homework policy now that is based on research that shows homework does not increase standardized test scores at the elementary level. This also gives our child time for family and extra curricular activities after school.

Our son has been there two years. He went to Bull Run the first year and he had a horrible kindergarten year. Deer Park has been amazing. He has been well taken care of. From the IEP teachers to Administrstion to the Nurse, he is always in good hands. They are looking out for him and have taken him under their wing like their own. We are grateful to be part of the Deer Park family.

Finally pulled my child. Eight years old and cannot read. Self esteem declining. Teachers and staff say my child is average based "questionable" in house testing. They fought the IEP and fought to reduce services. Parents are on their own and the deck is stacked against parents to advocate for your child. This school needs FCPS to clean house. Deerpark deserves the latest pattern of 1 star ratings - it is well deserved.

If you are fortunate enough to get a good teacher your child's experience at this school could be great. However, if not, be prepared to watch your child go through a living nightmare. Some of the staff members at this school bully children. They are in no way truly concerned your child's education.

This school does not help children who are struggling with life issues, and only want children at their school who are so call "normal" any behavior issues and your child will be looked down upon and treated terribly. They are not there to help children in anyway and really find out what the core problem is, they just want to get rid of any children who have any behavior problems. I have to say that once my children moved out of this school they had much better experiences at their new schools, and I realized that even though my children are not perfect, they should not be treated badly and it was more the school then my children's minor behavior issues.

Our son went to Deer Park from kindergarten to 4th grade. He loves his school and had many friends there until he got unfairly accused of a wrong doing and suspended without any actual evidence or objective review. Our family was dragged through the mud because of incompetent and unprofessional school and SACC administrators. I would definitely NOT recommend attending this school. We were highly disappointed and our son and his friends there were heart broken by how things were handled.

Our son was a bright, very bouncy, happy child. Upon enrollment in this school, he was accused of having ADHD. We had him taken to not one, but two different physicians, who refused to diagnose him. Our son's teacher was not happy that a doctor would not confirm her diagnosis. The story does have a happy ending, however. We moved schools, and we got a teacher who explained that our child was simply interrupting and causing bedlam due to what he advised was an attention getting tactic. As soon as we sat that child down, in front of his teacher and warned him off doing that EVER again, we never saw any signs of ADHD again. PERIOD. His current teacher says he's made 180 degree turnaround. To think we almost medicated our son for that makes me cringe. At the current school, all we know is that he passed only 13% of the knowledge he should have for a 5th grader, when he got to the new school. Halfway through this year, that increased to 50%. Beware of teachers at this school who want to medicate your children and are not qualified physicians. They really don't have a medical degree and should not be in the business of diagnosing children, in my humble opinion.

Teachers could probably be more effective if they were given more resources. Other schools buy online tools to help with typing, memorizing math facts etc. that really help students progress quickly. Discipline is a bit broken, as well, with a lot of misbehavior being blamed on ADHD, when it's simply not the case.

My children had so much homework at this school, and yet, they always felt behind. Homework is great, but I always felt, as the parent, I had to teach them the material. Both kids would get home and not be able to start their homework for reasons of not understanding what was presented in class. I now know one of them had an auditory processing issue, which explains why she was having so much trouble with a lot of verbal instructions on tests. The teacher, at the time, acted like our child was belligerent, and it made for a really rocky relationship between student and child.

We found they try, but fail, because they don't understand how much bullying goes on at lunch and recess, without the teachers being in earshot (teachers not present at lunch, and at recess, sit too far from earshot). They do try to address problems after the fact, and they talk prevention, but they don't walk the walk. My child told me she was bullied and she wasn't believed for 1.5 years, until her grades declined, her work fell down, and she was complaining of mystery illnesses all the time and tried to get me to not send her to school regularly. The Vice Principle at this school DOES try to get to the bottom of it, and she's very good, but the teachers ignored the problem.

Deer Park is an amazing school!!!! My two daughters are there for 4 years and they are very happy. Great principal, very good teachers with lot of experience and great background (principal is doing great hiring just A1 teachers) and office personal, excellent counselor, special education rocks!!, PTA very well organize, my older daughter went to Bull Run until boundaries change and If I need to compare Deer Park is better in all ways (Bull Run is bad but not that good like Deer Park in my opinion with two students attending).

Our children attended Deer Park from 2005 to 2011 and we absolutely loved the educational experience the school provided! The teachers are amazing and there is strong sense of community involvement. We are a military family that has moved on and we are still searching for a school as good as Deer Park was.

We bought a house in the neighborhood over the Summer and have been nothing but impressed with Deer Park. When looking for a house I would check greatschools for the ratings, and while Deer Park never rated extremely high, I used 'word of mouth' as a bigger decision maker in this process. Talking with friends who had teacher friends at Deer Park and talking to neighbors of people in the school zone and past parents, I never heard a negative word spoke. We have been nothing but happy with our decision to send our kids here. We love Deer Park!

My daughter Mary went to this school last year and this year we moved to the other side of road so she have to go to diffrent school. And my daughter liked all the teachers and staffs from the Deer Park. And last Saterday I just discoverd accidently that kindergarden teacher Ms. Erica Wyman how she is nice and great teacher she is!. Her personaity are exceptional and super generous. I am so sure and confident who ever attanding her class will be happy year!. We are going to miss Deer Park....
