My middle schooler started out at this school before we transferred. The school is so welcoming to 6th graders and helped guide my student through her first few months of attending. Great school. They have great staff to accommodate the amount of students they have attending.

I know James Wood is considered to be a small town" school but where we came from prior to living in this area, James Wood Middle is a pretty big school. Transitioning from a tiny town in the mountains to school in the Winchester area was definitely a bit of a change for my kids. The staff at James Wood Middle has been amazing are always seem to have the kids best interest at heart. My oldest son has been lucky enough to get tangled up in FFA with an amazing advisor named Ms. Stern. She has gone out of her way to help him get involved with several activities and even allowed his younger brother (who will be in the middle school next year) tag along. I was hesitant that these small town kids were going to stumble along the way but she has really done a great job of helping them feel like they fit in. The principal and Vice Principal are also a great team of administrators to work with. They are quick to take action and stay on top of any issues that arise. I look forward to spending a handful more years interacting with the staff and administrators at this school. Hopefully they all know how appreciated they really are.

While the head principal is a wonderful man this school is riddled with verbally abusive students. There are drug problems/racial stereotyping that is not only ignored but tolerated without punishment. Minority students such as myself, are targeted and made to feel very uncomfortable and inferior.

there are many good teachers such as Ms. Ramsey, Mr.Carr, Mrs. Fisher, Ms. Hileman and Ms.Babe who care about their students. there are few bad teachers who are rude and mean. and then there are the teachers that just don't care and just want their paycheck.

Teachers are allowed to say anything to their students without regard for how devastating their words and actions can be to a child's educational experience. I would not recommend this school to my worst enemy!!!

I am now in high school and there are many ups and downs about this school. Just like other schools in winchester, if you are an athelete or someone who is very outgoing and you can easily make friends, good for you. You'll have a great time at the school. I wasn't in this category. The school is decent in academics, the teachers do help, but you have to look for them, which is normal. Students (When I Went There) were extremely mean though. They isolated me from everything possible. I know the students change yearly, but you can't expect much from teenagers. The teachers are very nice and they do work one-on-one with you. the principle, As of 2012, is amazing. He knows how to deal with children and he knows what to expect. The school is decent. Just make sure not to isolate yourself or let other bring you down. That was my problem. You have to remember that these kids are only 11-15(Around). They will be bullies when they want to be. Just find the good people in this school, which there are believe it or not, and you will have a nice time.
