As a family who has been a part of the MCCS community since 2014, we have seen this school through the good and not-so-good years. We have one remaining child in 5th grade at MCCS and our other children are now in middle school. Our older children transitioned to MS easily because MCCS prepared them not only academically for 6th grade, but socially as well. They have taken all honors classes through 6th and 7th grades, have been on the honor roll each quarter, and are thriving. I expect the same for my youngest when they enter 6th grade next school year. The project-based, hands-on learning that MCCS excels at along with the many group projects and multi-age classrooms, have been a huge benefit for my children in middle school.
While this current school year has been especially challenging for schools trying to pivot to distance and hybrid learning, MCCS's administration and teachers have risen to the occasion. While not an ideal learning situation, I have been satisfied with the education my child is receiving this year. In addition, MCCS continues to offer its families opportunities to keep our sense of community alive and well in reasonable and safe ways.
Lastly, our principal and teachers are passionate, dedicated, and experienced. As my youngest finishes his final year at MCCS this spring, we think about all the things we will miss about MCCS... the strong sense of community, the excitement of Leo Nights, the amazing teachers and staff, the year round calendar, and the solid, sensible leadership of our principal.

This school is like a big family and we feel so lucky to be apart of it!
Our second son attended Kindergarten at another school in Loudoun. Hes a smart kid, has no trouble making friends and had an amazing teacher, but the class sizes and the large standardized school atmosphere was overwhelming for him. As the year progressed we could see him shutting down more and more until the point where he would cry himself to sleep at night dreading school the next day.
When we brought him to visit MCCS we could tell he immediately felt at home. MCCS has been a breath of fresh air for us and he has truly grown and blossomed here. We have since enrolled our other children here and been just as pleased with all of their progress.

We LOVE that younger scholars have older-grade buddies. Everyone knows everyone by name. The close-knit, small school vibe is a something to treasure and a rare experience in a county as large as Loudoun. The children are taught respect, character-building, and bullying is not tolerated.

We love this school for our kids. They have the rest of their lives to live in a world where they are one of many. Here, they are encouraged to think outside of the box, be themselves, to lead by example. They learn by DOING, not by watching. Our oldest JUST told us yesterday that she feels so lucky because her school is fun, because they don't watch their teachers teach, they get to DO the things they learn. When you walk the halls of the school, you see the work of the scholars literally everywhere. This is THEIR school, they love being there, and they have developed a love of learning and we 100% made the right choice when deciding to start them at MCCS 2 years ago. This experience will undoubtedly shape their future.

One of the reasons we LOVE this school is that learning and work happens IN the classrooms. While the kids are encouraged to read and do get some at-home assignments, homework is minimal so kids can come home and be kids. In the class, the kids are always DOING versus sitting and listening. We love this.

It's a tiny school. Six TOTAL teachers. So if one leaves, it appears to be a "bad turnover" rate. Teachers leave ALL schools, ALL the time. People move away, or move on. But the teachers who teach here love the creative, hands-on approach to learning, and they are ALL passionate amazing teachers. These kids learn by doing, and the work they do at a young age is impressive. Leo Nights will blow your mind. The kids understand team work, research, presentations from Kindergarten. For our kids, their confidence is high and they LOVE to learn. We can't ask for more than that.

It's my understanding that most of the staff is new for the 2019-2020 school year. They have all been fantastic! If I have any issues, I feel comfortable speaking to the appropriate person and feel confident my issues are being taken seriously. The teachers all seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs and the approach to teaching is not like standard schools.

The most recent principal was effective at bonding with parents and students. She sometimes worked well with staff and at other times did not communicate effectively or did not follow through with recording information regarding student behaviors. She has decided to leave the school halfway through the school year. The board of directors and school leardership team have also just restructured. Hopefully the board, leadership team, and interim principal can work together to resolve any issues these changes bring.

As a small charter school there are some resources we cannot qualify or budget for. However teachers, assistants, ELL, speech, and SPED teachers all work together to meet the needs of students. They see each student from a strength based perspective and try to help students build on their strengths as well as work in areas in which they need help.

The school stresses respect for others, uses mindfulness and self reflection, and the counselor works with students individually, in small groups, and in the classroom. The school is small so teachers know the students well. Incidents are addressed quickly. However no specific anti-bullying or community building curriculum is taught regularly, which would make the good things even better.

The school structure is failing, with the principal having little to no power. That's why they have been through so many principals, they can't succeed when everything is a vote by an unqualified committee of teachers. The current principal is a breath of fresh air, trying to lead (mostly) a bullying band of inexperienced teachers. A few of the newer hire teachers are great and have enough of a solid foundation in teaching to know how to balance basic elementary skills with innovative project based learning.

what has been disappointing about this school is lack of supervision and discipline in regard to use of foul language. my 5 year old son learned the F. work and similar at this school. when this was brought to schools attention, the response was more or less " kids are kids", that is unacceptable response to me.

This is an incredible school where I am amazed daily by all that my child is learning. The fabulous STEAM-integrated, project-based learning curriculum results in curious and engaged students. Given the school has less than 150 students (unheard of in Loudoun County) it is a true community where our child is known well and cared for. Given the grouped class sizes (K-1, 2-3 and 4-5) there is the ability for advanced students to move ahead of their grade level so they are continually challenged and remain engaged. There is also a huge emphasis on RESPECT at this school, for self, others and property, with a lot of positive reinforcement.

Wonderful project based learning school. Kids love for learning is amazing, they actually WANT to go to school! Year round calendar with shorter breaks is awesome as kids don't have to refresh/review so much (aside from we can go on great vacations on the breaks!). The school also has intersession programs that focus on STEM and/or languages, everything from Science to Harry Potter! It's a place with high morale, teachers and TA's in every classroom with a small class size. All kids are taught a talented and gifted curriculum where actual learning and retention is more important than SOL scores (which happen to be excellent scores, but MCCS approach in getting there is meaningful). We love the music/strings program for 4th and 5th grade too.

My son missed out on guidance lessons, library, and gifted services. All of these are state mandated. When I asked the principal about these services, I was ignored. A charter school should indeed be different than a regular public school, but not so different that my child is not receiving state mandated curriculum! I am an educator and know very well that my child received a below average education this year. If this is the school for you, congrats! This is not the school I recommend for people who want to seriously prepare their child for a rigorous middle school curriculum.

The school's leadership has been terrible. When I went to the principal to discuss problems with my daughter's teacher, she told me that it was "not her job" to watch over the teachers. Actually, that is EXACTLY the job of a principal. My child went from loving school to having daily anxiety attacks about going to school. The school is like a day camp. No rules, no expectations, and very little work assigned. My daughter needed to be prepared for middle school. I withdrew my child and was also not granted an exit interview. It seems that you are only welcome in the school if you don't have any questions or concerns.

This school has no curriculum and they hired an uncertified principal who was later denied entry into the US. It is run by a board of parents who have no experience in education. My child was not learning anything, even after 2 months in school. When we left, the school treated us very poorly.

We are so happy to have found a school where our children can grow and shine in an environment that allows kids to be kids. I drive an hour round trip (2x a day) to take my children to Middleburg Community Charter School and it's so worth it. Small classes, large sized classrooms, a parent population that is not only small but super involved, a smart and loving staff who is working hard to bring this school to it's fullest potential, and most importantly, children who absolutely LOVE going to school everyday.

MCCS has exceeded our expectations. We are excited to be a part of this new school and are continually impressed by the leadership, excellent teaching practices, and integrated approach to teaching multiple subjects and grade levels. My 3 children are thriving in their small classrooms, learning great content while being able to be creative and master skills at their own level. The teachers are engaging and energetic. My kids love their art, photography, music, dance and pe classes. They have enjoyed playing strings, going swimming at the local pool, and talking walking trips to the public library. I can't say enough positive things about MCCS!

We really love MCCS. Came from a mega-school in LCPS and the changes in our children have been dramatic - in a good way. Teachers are supportive and caring, which is the biggest difference. The kids also love their projects and talking about what they learned. It is a new school and clearly has some "growing pains" but I personally have not witnessed anything near what the single star reviewers are talking about. Dr. Smith has been nothing but kind and caring to us personally, and we have had to meet with her about some matters with our daughter. Bonus - MCCS has full day Kindergarten, a year round schedule, and strings beginning in third grade!

We had a horrendous experience due to the leadership at the school. Our kids were enrolled for 3 weeks, and then decided to pull them after we realized the principal absolutely had no regard for supporting our son into a successful transition into Kindergarten. This review is being provided for the sole intention for those looking into the school. Our son was in kindergarten and Dr. Smith's expectations of a kindergartener were completely unrealistic; she actually told us repeatedly that our son was "Not normal" (even though he thrived in his pre-k) Dr. Smith liked to self-diagnose him, rather than relying on some of the experts the county provides. We discussed what Dr. Smith told us w/ family members who had a combined 90 yrs of teaching and administrative experience. They were appalled at what she said. We then decided to pull the kids out to another county school and the leadership at the new school was fully supportive, they NEVER saw any of the things Dr. Smith told us, and told us our son was a NORMAL kindergartener. He is now thriving. Additionally, no exit interview was ever granted.

MCCS has been a very good fit for our two daughters. One is in 1st grade and the second one is in 3rd grade. They both will be returning next year. They love it there and they both made quite a few friends. We like the multi-age approach. Both our daughters went to a Montessori school prior to MCCS and the transition has been easy on both or them. This multi-age approach allows the teachers to be able to differentiate their teaching on an individual base. For example, they have spelling groups (1-2 and 3) and children are placed according to their ability. We receive a lot of information regarding what they do at school. We are well informed. My wife and I are both educators, teaching in a local private high-school and we are pleased to say that MCCS meets our expectations. We are pleased with our daughters progress and I feel that they are both challenged in a very nurturing environment. I love the student centered approach. They do recognize that every child has a different personality and different needs.

We LOVE MCCS! Even in its first year of operating as a charter school, my kids have been thrilled with the teachers, staff, curriculum, and community! The biggest difference we can see in our children is the excitement that they have when discussing hand-on science projects, art, photography, and especially dance. The year-round school and full day kindergarten is a bonus, as is the outstanding teachers and caring staff they have at the school. We went out on a limb with a new school but really could not be happier - because our kids certainly are.

I am so sorry a handful of parents had a bad experience at MCCS. As for my family, we went into this knowing that the program was not fully in place and would be volatile to changes as the program and school took shape. Our expectations were that the program would not be predictable for at least 2 or so years. We got no commitments that the program was 100% repeatable at any point during our discovery process. Moreover, there were reminders all along the way that the program would evolved and that we would have to have tolerance for that. The presented DiVinci Model was very intriguing and in theory was very attractive to us coming from a Private Elementary Montessori setting and had more to offer then my local public school. Knowing this, our number one goal was that our children continue to grow academically this year, those goals have been met for us and exceeded our exceptions in many areas; they continued to grow in the math, science, social studies and language arts. And the teachers in these areas were excellent (top notch). The teachers in K-2 were able to build a program/curriculum that adjusted to my children's academics levels so they felt challenged everyday.

I can't say enough positive things about the school! The staff is engaged and always there for the children. The overall can do attitude from the whole MCCS community is inspiring! This is a very hands on kind of educational environment... Learning, playing, exploring not just for the children! We LEAPED at the chance for our son to enroll in this public school. They are using innovative cutting-edge education techniques which, from my experience, inspires my son to participate and stay engaged in the learning process. No small feat for a seven-year-old! Dr. Smith is a solid leader! She brings decades of experience and original ideas to our school. She loves the children and doesn't just sit behind her desk! She is with them every day, from arrival to dismissal, many times, also in the classrooms. She is a guiding force with an eye to innovation, passion for learning and desires to pass the passion on to our children! What more can you ask for?! That kind of leadership and school environment is contagious and our children get to see that love and care not just from their parents but from the staff and principal too!

MCCS staff successfully balance the tension that can exist between providing caring and safe atmosphere along with creating the necessary space for creativity and ingenuity. Supportive and responsive to our concerns; MCCS is a work in progress and not without the challenges any new organization faces in the first five years. The DaVinci Model/Curriculum and MCCS have been a breath of fresh air! As a parent, it's refreshing to be included in my child's education with monthly parent education nights, opportunities to contribute to brainstorming sessions about shaping the future of the school, and to learn alongside my child with project based and integrated learning opportunities as a family. As a former home school teacher and parent of students in both the private and public settings, it excites me to know that MCCS offers a fourth option for families looking for alternatives in education. It's not meant to emulate what already exists, but it is a wonderful learning community with a solid foundation of parent, teacher, faculty and student involvement. Might appeal to those willing to step outside of convention, but who want a traditional setting.

My family has been extremely happy at MCCS! My children are honestly excited about school and adore their teachers... this is something I cannot say about our previous Loudoun County public school. The year-round calender, with breaks at the end of each quarter, is wonderful and keeps my children focused. MCCS offers many opportunities for family involvement. The small student body is a refreshing change from most local schools. I approached this first school year knowing there would be hiccups. MCCS is using a new, innovative curriculum with multi-age classrooms and a new staff... of course there are going to be bumps in the road! The curriculum has been a great fit for my children. EVERY concern that I have voiced - whether it be a personal issue about my specific child(ren), or a school-wide concern - has been acknowledged and addressed quickly and satisfactory. I anticipate every semester to continue to grow better and better and I look forward my children's remaining elementary years at MCCS.

This school is the warmest, most happy school in Loudoun county. My child always hated school before he came here. His teachers are the best - dedicated to hands on learning! This School was marketed as the best & innovative. It's the furthest thing from that. This school has so many problems. State law requires a librarian and library on site. The librarian resigned after 60 days. The principal does not have the mandated certifications. So glad we pulled our kids and re enrolled them at our assigned LCPS school.
