My student has had a very positive experience at Garfield. The academic offerings are excellent including over 20 AP courses and numerous really fantastic teachers especially in science and English. Athletics are also excellent, with coaches who genuinely care about the kids and a history of very strong teams that compete at a high level, but also at least one no-cut sport in every season and an emotional basis on personal growth, hard work, and teamwork.

My child has been so happy at Garfield! The curriculum and extra curriculars are broad and great, and the teachers are fantastic. He is pushed academically, and I'm confident in the education and opportunity he's receiving, in and out of the classroom. Take a look at the college placement, and you'll get an idea of how good Garfield is. In terms of safety, my son feels very safe in the school, and I'm confident they're addressing the issues surrounding the school.

We have had a fantastic experience at Garfield -- our student has been challenged by thoughtful and creative teachers (who double as terrifically engaged mentors), has developed a positive, supportive, and kind friend community, and has found exciting opportunities through Garfield athletics, music program, and clubs. We've been excited to see a commitment to advanced placement and course level-up opportunities to keep our student challenged, and have been impressed that even at a large school, our student's teachers and coaches know them so well and are always available to provide feedback and extra time to connect with our student when needed. The administration is also terrific - receptive, available, organized, and strong advocates for Garfield students and community. Love this school!

We love Garfield! My son just had his first day of sophomore year and came home so happy. He had a great year last year at Garfield, too. One thing I didn't quite realize before we started was how amazing the teachers would be and the high level of academic rigor. He has so many AP and honors classes this year. There is huge pride in the community at Garfield. I went to a great high school, but there was definitely not the Garfield level of pride there. It doesn't end after high school either. There is a sense of community and pride among folks who have graduated from Garfield ("Bulldogs for life"). Many artistic legends have come from the school and left their legacy. The music program is top notch. My son did band last year and had so many opportunities. He played at the mayor's state of the city address at Benaroya Hall, and all the kids in beginning band play at the football and basketball games. Of course the jazz program is beyond compare for those interested in jazz. The theater program is wonderful from what I hear as well.

Sports options include cross country, golf, track & field, soccer, ultimate frisbee, wresting, swimming & diving, football, bowling, volleyball, basketball, flag football, baseball, fast pitch softball and tennis.

A select few are fantastic, but they're jumping ship fast. Most teachers act like they would rather be doing anything else but teaching.

the only way students here are building character is by realizing how ineffective the school bureaucracy is and that they have to step up and figure things out by themselves.

the administration is so out of touch with what their students want and need. Most of their time is spent harassing underprivileged students for things that are out of their control. They make no effort to get to know students and students are left to fend for themselves.

if you fall behind you're basically kicked to the curb. Depression, anxiety, adhd, is not an excuse and there is very little real help available

most teachers shut it down on sight, but most cases go unreported because administrators either do nothing because they "cant" or they do very little and the bullying gets worse

Worst school experience imaginable. School desperately needs better leadership. Poor students, many of them fall through the cracks because no one in administration cares or does their job well.

Garfield is an interesting school. it is a happy mix of students are highly gifted, neighborhood students and those lucky to get a seat through school choice.. As a result you have a very well rounded school with something for everyone, be it a choice of over 20 some AP classes or a spot on the state championship basketball team or a musician in the top high school orchestra in the country or member of the Shakespeare club. This school has it all. For a large urban school it is very well run. The students are very active in the community.

This is sort of odd, but I swear Garfield has the prettiest student body. The teachers are sort of a mixed bag, but for the most part they are fairly good. Garfield has gotten some bad press lately and that seems to be overshadowing all the good things that happen there. The music program is great and the drama program is so underrated and awesome. Sports are getting better. The best part about Garfield is that everyone has some amazing special talent about them. You might find out the girl who sits behind you in language arts is a junior Olympic runner, or that guy in your chem class has a fairly successful bluegrass band. One problem is that like all other Seattle Schools, it's pretty underfunded. The students joke about how the school ran out of paper budget last year and how Garfield cut detention because it cost to much. Overall, Garfield is the coolest school in Seattle, or even all of Washington.
