My daughter is in Kindergarten here. Her teacher speaks to all of the parents every morning and has great communication with the families. I always know how my daughter is doing and how her day went. She loves classes like garden science and is learning her numbers and letters quickly. There is no shortage of parent volunteers for this class. We feel really fortunate to be in this school district and in Mrs. Smiths Kindergarten class at Lafayette.

Small school community with highly involved PTA. Great garden program and enrichment opportunities. There are many wonderfully talented teachers. This has become mired by the poor leadership and permissiveness that gives some groups more power and influence over the direction of the school leading to discrimination against students and families.

A principal who is part of the problem. Defensive and ignorant of her shortcomings. We are leaving the school because of it.

In our four years there, 2 teachers have been amazing and 2 have been absolutley horrible.

Racism and bullying has been pushed aside and not handled well at all. We are leaving because we are not safe or supported by the principal.

Funds from the state may be thin but the staff their have done a great job of working with what they have (and PTA funds have helped of course). Overall they make it seem like a well-funded school that runs smoothly and has a lot to offer.

Overall Lafayette has been very good from an educational, social and communal standpoint. My only complaint is that they don't have an HCC program considering how many HCC eligible students they have. Fairmount is at capacity for their HCC program and students on the wait list have nowhere to go. I wish Lafayette could fill that void.

I have one child at Lafayette who is slightly lower than average in most areas of study, and one child who has tested highly capable. Both are having success in their own way, and the teachers have demonstrated the ability to handle both types of learners. We have friends in private schools who are less happy than we are on this point.

Homework is appropriately balanced based on grade level and student aptitude. At grades K-2/3 there is minimal homework, beyond reading at home, and then at grade 3-5 there is increased homework and projects in preparation for middle school.

Teachers at Lafayette are constantly measuring and monitoring students and then adjusting their approach to each student. We have one child who is two years ahead and is challenged, and another who is average, and both have had great teachers who understand the needs of a student in each category. It has been very impressive.

The community surrounding Lafayette is unparalleled in the district. It is extremely tight nit, and that means the values are extremely high. It's a factor of environment. The fact that the teachers at Lafayette understand this only increases the attention to detail to student core values.

We have had a bit of turnover in principals. That said, our principals have always been good, and the community is so strong here and teacher turnover is extremely low. That means it really doesn't matter who the principal is, the leadership remains strong.

11 out of 10. Before our first (of three) started at Lafayette, we heard some complaints about shifting principals but on the whole, the intel was extremely positive. We looked seriously at private schools, and that remains an option for us financially. That said, we value the community much higher than other factors, so we stuck with Lafayette since it is much closer than the private alternatives. We made the right decision and it is not even close. Not only have the teachers been exceptional at Lafayette, but also all of our friends in private schools complain often about the lack of community. Most of the students at Lafayette live within a half a mile from the school. For us, that has meant extremely close ties, less driving, and more time developing relationships in our immediate community. For these reasons, we would rate our experience an 11 out of 10.

I've had 2 students through Lafayette and we have had some amazing teachers and only 2 that were 'blah' (that's out of 11). The school has fostered a wonderful community for parents and many spend hours on the playground together at pick up.

Like any school, there's great teachers and average ones... At times the principal's hands are tied because of union contracts and tenured employees. Unfortunately, sometimes we are just 'assigned' a problematic teacher and there's nothing that can be done. However, the current administration believes in teacher training and doing whatever is possible to improve teachers or do her best to get them reassigned.

Teachers are excellent at evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each kid. The school provides excellent counselors, speech therapist and occupational therapist when needed. The IEP process is thoughtful and professional.

In general, most homework is completed through online math and reading programs that teachers can log into and see the students progress. Some teachers give added worksheet math homework. Reading with your students is always an expectation of teachers.

We are SO thankful for the teachers at Lafayette Elementary. Both of our kids had Ms. Sarah for Kindergarten and she is a total boss. She works hard to promote equity in the classroom, compassion for others and also pushes the kids to excel in the classroom from a reading/writing standpoint. We love her! Our oldest is wrapping up first grade and has Ms. Jones. She is outstanding and has helped him achieve so many goals this year! I honestly could not imagine any better teachers exist in this world.

We have loved our 5 years so far at Lafayette. The leadership and teaching staff are wonderful. The PTA and parent involvement is strong and provides a warm welcoming environment. Highlights of this school is the strong community, the parent network, the amazing Enrichment program ( after school activities of all genres including theater, art, coding to name a few), the Garden program and many community building PTA run events all year round. I am proud to be a parent and PTA board member at this school. I have been here 5 years and will be here for another 7 as my 3 children advance through.

They are getting a solid education, have fun at school, are learning to show respect for everyone, and lines of communications are strong. Most teachers have stopped sending home paper packets due to evidence that they are not as effective for students who are at different levels. Most now use adaptive programs like RazKids for homework to meet the students personal needs. If tablets or computers are not available in the home, the school provides support either int he on-site computer lab or other arrangements.

Our children are in third and first grade and overall the teachers are exceptional. They love the children, are creative in their teaching approaches, and are always willing to make themselves available to parents with questions. They offer many field trip opportunities and the school garden program is fantastic.

After a string of quick turn-overs in Principals, we have had the same outstanding Principal for three years. She always thinks of the needs of students first. She makes exceptional hires, is present in the classroom on a regular basis, and will do whatever it takes to get this done. I regularly see her at the school hours after the school day is over and makes herself available to parents and caregivers through multiple channels like 1:1s, regular coffee chats, presence at PTA meetings, or by email and phone. We are also fortunate to have a half-time Assistant Principal this year. She is amazing and is such a positive force in support of the students, staff, and families.

We have a counselor who works with classroom clusters on respect and how to deal with bullying with age-appropriate materials. She does role-plays, activities and sends home materials so that families and caregivers for awareness and to help reinforce the practices and language. There is a strong emphasis on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, including a new PTA Board role to focus exclusively on these issues with staff, students, families and the community at large.

Honestly, I'm disappointed. I had high hopes for Kindergarten as the springboard to a creating an engaged and excited learner. Instead, the *one* area we highlighted at the beginning of the year as a potential issue in terms of our child's development remained unaddressed for the entire year. This strikes me, ultimately, as a failure of leadership.

While the volume of homework seems commensurate with age level, even in Kindergarten, the expectation is that it be completed on tablets. For those who don't have access to one at home, they are available in the library... for doing work in the library. There is a serious equity issue here in the dual assumptions that kids will have access to tablets and high-speed internet at home, and the overall problem is exacerbated by restricting those who don't have tablets to doing their work in the library. (Note: this was the position of the school at the beginning of the year. While it's possible things have changed, it's unlikely).

Academics seem to be at grade level, and our direct experience of our son's K teacher is that she has a good handle on teaching methods, at least when it comes to the 3 R's. Classroom management, on the other hand, seems rooted in the 60s/70s. Belying the core tenet of the school of "show respect," classroom rules are arbitrary, arbitrarily enforced, and only punitive discipline methods are applied. Great big fail on this front.

They talked and talked about this. "Show respect" was the number one behavioral characteristic defining "Leopard Learners." Well, it seems from our experience that the implementation of this idea means "do what the teachers say to do." In my experience "respect" is something that is given, and something that is earned. It cannot be demanded, and it is a defining characteristic of a relationship, not a one-sided transaction. The expectation, in practice, has been that children are quiet, in line, and obedient. That's not the same thing.

Inititally, I felt the leadership was willing to work with us, and with the staff, to ensure that our child would be treated as an individual within the framework of the school's requirements. Much lip service was paid to our concerns, and here, 11 months into the Kindergarten school year (arguably a defining year), there has been zero change at the individual or school level in terms of living up to the stated mission of creating excited, lifelong learners. Instead, it seems to have been a message for parents alone. The principal has not been able to effect any classroom-level change. Her one "success" was getting a teacher to accept that he/she was not really qualified to be a teacher, and instead take on a classroom assistant role. After seven months of chaos.

No strong basis for judgment on this one. However, I will say that the only time my child was involved in a playground incident, it was not handled very effectively at all. To start with, it was not handled by the adults on the playground. Instead, it took a third-party report (the other child's mom), and we didn't learn about it until ten days after the fact, at which point any hope of positive intervention was expired. Finally, the default approach to handling the issue was just to take away recess. From one, but not both, of the children involved.

Teachers seem strong in teaching academics. My child learned reading, math, and science in a way that was engaging to him. However they are NOT effective at teaching social emotional skills, compassion, or self-directed problem solving.

Not great. We were really disappointed - our child is in kindergarten and never really loved going to school. Discipline was out of line with current standards and current research into how very young kids process , move, and learn. The administration always kindly and promptly listened to our concerns, but nothing was ever done to actually address them. I know many people love this school, but we did not.

My daughter just finished K and we couldn't be happier with her experience at Layfayette. She had an awesome teacher who communicated well and was very flexible to different types of learning. My daughter loves the art program, garden, PE, and can now read at an appropriate level.

The school has a self-manager program where kids earn independence by showing they make good choices. With this the school has three mottos Ms. Chaput reminds the students of daily...Make a good decision, Show respect, and solve problems. They have also adopted the RULER program in conjunction with another program on educating students on self-control, self-awareness, and self-development.

Ms. Chaput has been an amazing gift to the community of Lafayette. She is amazing and has changed the culture at our school in so many ways. She has her Ph.D. and she is fostering a workplace of empowerment and ownership. She inspires people to want to do more for the kids like teachers use to do. She also implemented STEAM Wednesdays where kids get to sign up for a new STEAM learning experience each semester and it is an amazing opportunity for unique learning for our students. She also has implemented student lead conferences which empowers the students to take ownership in their education journey and set goals.

Yes, there are numerous programs in the school supporting students with learning differences including interventionists, tutors, PT room, speech therapy, developmental pre-school which promotes continued support into K-5, and a significant staff supporting these students.

The bullying has gone down since Ms. Chaput took over and in fact, it is not a significant problem in this school. She has a three-step discipline process and with the learning difference support in the school students are getting the support they need versus acting out toward others. There are social classes for students who we see need more support, there are a counselor, a psychiatrist and a student community called the Pawsitivity committee which further supports inclusion, communication villages, and kindness.

Yes, they are. They do a great job supporting the students and the new leadership here has made a significant difference in direction on this very topic. The school is no longer a highly capable school and therefore the test scores are more realistic in comparison to a weighted number based on highly capable students skewing the numbers. The teachers, however, teach to the grade level of the student regardless of HC identification or not.

We have loved our time at Lafayette. The staff is caring and helpful, parents are supportive and involved. I think there are a lot of really cool programs like STEAM Wednesdays, a great garden program, poetry in the schools program, third grade partners with the local retirement home for senior buddies. The list could go on and on. I feel like the school has really evolved over the past 5 years from where it was. So happy to be here!

Every day the kids are exposed to what their leopard learners core values are; shows respect, makes good decisions, and solves problems. The school also has a RULER program for social and emotional learning with class charters and other things to help the kids develop strong character.

The principal is very involved and likes to try new things to engage the students. We now have STEAM Wednesdays where teachers hold a 10 week session on a subject they want (Japanese, green screen movie making, set design, insects) and the kids sign up for what they want to learn about that quarter. An awesome idea that lets the kids take hold of their own learning. Principal also has an open door policy and addresses concerns quickly.

I personally don't agree with the "Walk to Math" idea. The students break apart into a low math group and a high math group. Other parents like this, but as a teacher with a master's degree in education, I feel that it is a disservice to our more needy students.

Lafayette is wonderful school with warm and inviting teachers, administration, and parents. I have met almost all of the teachers and seen their classrooms. They are all dedicated and excellent teachers. The new principal, Ms. Chaput, is also a great addition. She holds lots of meetings to invite parents into the school. She does morning meetings as well as evening meetings to accommodate working parents. I have found the community to be amazing! We are new to Seattle but it doesn't feel that way! There are lots of Mom's Nights Out where you can meet other Lafayette Moms. I have to say that I am completely impressed with Music, Art, and PE program. They rotate through these three programs every week. I love Kathy and Selina in the front office. They are so warm and welcoming! I really can't say enough about this school. I hope that our principal and teachers stay for many years to come! The only thing that would make Lafayette even better, would be the a new building (but the good news is that it's in the works!). Also, I hope the school district will adopt a new reading curriculum for our teachers!!! It's unfair that they have to write their own curriculum. Despite this, the teachers do a wonderful job with what they have available.

Strengths: Dedicated teachers and staff! Diverse student community - in terms of race, culture and economics- and there is attention to equity among all groups. Bullying not tolerated, focused on social and emotional learning. Strong academic achievement, diverse learning opportunities. Secured campus. Many caring adults throughout the school watching out for all kids.
Cons: Principal is a poor communicator and limits himself greatly with the parent community. The school has been through a number of principals prior to his arrival but he has stuck around for several years now.

As a mom of three kids at Lafayette (1st, 3rd, 4th), all three of whom are very different learners, we have had an overwhelmingly positive experience from day one. The teachers are incredible. The families have been collaborative and supportive. And though our five years there have seen all of the administrative transition that other reviewers have mentioned, our kids have been thoroughly protected from an awareness of any unrest behind-the-scenes. We love our neighborhood school and are thankful to be having such a positive experience in the public school system!

honestly after 2 kids going from k-5 at Lafayette and seeing the unfortunate leadership changes - I would say a lesser school wouldn't have made it through the over crowding and repopulating of the school. The glue that holds this school together is the parents - supper concerned and supportive. There are experienced and highly dedicated teachers. We only had 2 in 12 that weren't great. Kids learn what they should in a supportive community.

We have a kindergarten student who started at Lafayette this past fall. The school faculty and PTA have been nothing short of welcoming, genuine and professional. We've been very pleased with our daughter's teacher and, although disappointed that the leadership is changing, I don't fault the school for this. If you read through these reviews the most frequent negative comment is about a principal that hasn't been there for over a year. It's really not right that out-dated information is negatively impacting the ratings for such a fantastic school. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be assigned to such a great school and I can honestly say we haven't come across one case of "elitism". A school is as good as you make it. Reach out and be involved and you will have a better experience.

I am a grandmother of a child who will enter Kindergarten in the Fall and lives in Lafayette's neighborhood school area. I understand the school has undergone a leadership crisis over the last couple years with one Principal after another, the current one leaving soon. I was distressed at some reviews. Comment on lots of bullying, but in particular one or more comments indicating an elitist attitude: it's our school and if you don't like it as is, you may go elsewhere. What on earth is this? I hope it is not a majority view. Lafayette could use some attitude adjustment and people wotj power like the PTSA need to welcome new people and listen with an open mind to concerns. The school needs to fit the children, not the reverse. It is PUBLIC. It does not sound an appealing place to send a 5 year old if a couple of the comments reflect parental attitudes.

Where do I start... 1.We were told in 1st and 2nd grade to study for the MAP test so we can boost the school score. They provide websites with similar problems. 2.Our teachers (aside from our young 1st grade teacher)seem burned out and have no emotion with the students. 3.My wife (who assists in the classroom often) is frustrated with their lesson plans. 4.My son who ace s his spelling test is not allow to receive harder words. 5.Bullying is everywhere and they dont have resources to monitor over 500 students. 6.They have been through 3 principals in 1-2 years. 7. I have a feeling that the spectrum program is the reason for the high scores. Without those stuednets, the school would rank low. Do yourselves a favor and look into private school or Alki or Schmitz park.
