Showalter Middle School

I really like this school, I honestly, don’t get the bad reviews. I was a current student at the school until some days ago that I moved states and had to change school. The teachers are very supportive and they do their best to help you (most of them of course not all of them, the best teachers are: Mr. Napier, Mr. Chean, Ms. Paulsen, Ms. Sanchez, Ms. Lewis, Ms. Norman, Ms. Whooley, Mr. Forsyth, Ms. Wohl, Ms. Cieslikowski, Ms. Allen Lindsey, and Ms. Zhong, they were helpful and encouraging, they helped with my studies and helped me become a better student and person. The staff is pretty nice, most of the staff are the nicest person you could meet. (Some of them are Mr. Kenny, Ms. Flack, Ms. Cash, Mr. Gregg, Ms. Folkins, and Mr. Christopher ( the principal) ). Most of the teachers really care about homework and some not that much, they can give you projects long term, or short term, they interact a lot with the parents, if your students is absent to at least one period they call you and tell you, they give them lunch detentions for honest reasons and I really like that, also they have a lot of programs that can help you. They also do help with homework after school, they have clubs, sports, and they can offer you clothes, food help, and more, they also invite you to programs outside school that can help you. The students are nice, there are no that much fights, I can confidently say that they can last up to 2 months with no fights, and the staff are very quickly (if it’s nearby school). In conclusion I really liked this school and I would definitely recommend it, if your kid is failing it’s because they put no effort, the teachers give a lot of time to turn in assignments and even after the due date is passed most of the projects they grade them. (PS: If you are one of the teachers or staff that I mentioned I ADORE YOU, KEEP IT UPPPP!)

There have been some recent changes with a new vice principal but the principal remains. There are many strong staff leaders but the principals leadership is ineffective. He is discouraging to the students that need him most. I believe he pushes more kids to sell drugs and join gangs than he influences to make better of themselves.

Most staff method is to bully the bully which is not effective anywhere. Shaming students are never influential to positive outcomes. It ignites more damages to the individual and other around that particular individual. They need more positive, constructive and innovative communication to encourage these bright but struggles young minds.

The teachers my children have had go above and beyond especially considering this is a low income community with great diversity inclusion which can cause a barrier in communication. The actual hired teachers are exceptional when parents are heavily involved. Otherwise - your asking strangers to raise a child that is not theirs with an expectation to make them successful. Not fair!

Tukwila is a community of cultural diversity and low income families. Showalter is the only
MS in Tukwila which all age groups within the Tukwila community go to from the 3 elementary school Tukwila contains. Showalter lacks resources and leadership. They need more good teachers like Ms. Gill and Mr. Page who deserve competitive pay. Otherwise, Showalter consumes paraeducators with little to no experience in child development or education and teachers with teaching degrees but little to no community outreach, people skills and professionalism. My experiences have been bittersweet. As long as there are staff members like Mrs. Page, Ms. Thomas and Mrs. Perez empowering young minds to stay above the hype and to not be easily influenced or discouraged - Showalter can and will be great. I understand views of my insights may be more than what is obligated but this is not a community or a school district like Bellevue. So for Showalter to expect the same results of a Bellevue school district utilizing the same matrix for dissimilar communities and diversity - bothers me. There are more troubled kids in this community that need help and have a stronger influences on other kids which result to bullying and depression and there is a principal and a handful of teacher who are leading these kids knowingly or unknowingly to their distruction. My kids have been attending Tukwila School district since each were in Kindergarten. The Tukwila elementary principal is amazing and it’s been very hard to locate anything equivalent. The school structure is the same since my husband attended this school and kids are evolving and becoming more resourceful. Showalter mindset needs to grow and think for the kids and not against them - especially parents who are heavily involved.

Me kids have gotten a good fair amount of work throughout the years. Teachers are just as communicative as the kid is willing to be. I can appreciate the shared responsibility of my child’s success. Parent involvement is highly encouraged. The classes are overpopulated for one teacher to maintain.

Nobody cares. The teachers don't care. The administration doesn't care. The counselors don't care. Is your student failing? They don't care. Is your student bullied? They don't care. Does your student have special needs? They don't care. All they do is rubber-stamp the kids and move them along, ready or not, to high school. Don't waste your time here, if you can avoid it.

I attended Showalter in the 70s and loved it. Seems parents of this day and age expect the teachers to raise their little hellions and smile while doing it. Sad that their lack of involvement in their child's education equals a poor review on this site.

If you have a choice of where you will attend middle school I'd avoid Showalter. If you don't then good luck. Most teachers here are totally lazy and can't teach. They have no problems becoming best friends with their students though. You'll be lucky to have a few great teachers that actually know the material rather than reading it straight out of a book everyday. If you're an honor student expect to have a lot of busy work and projects, if you're a nonhonor student don't expect to have exciting challenging classes. The point is that academics don't really matter at Showalter. One of the most shocking things I've discovered at this school is how some teachers behave themselves. There are some very childish teachers here. Some even cuss in class. They act is if they don't know how to behave professionally. I only gave two stars because a handful of teachers here actually did make my middle school education worthwhile and meaningful. I know that without a few I would've barely made it through my 3 years of middle school. Unfortunately, I don't think some of them still work here.

The staff works really hard and the students are very accepting of the school's diversity. Increased parent involvement would really help out.

I'm just happy I got out of there. I truly do worry how much my education would have been corrupted and corroded had I continued attending this school as well as its high school counterpart.

Ok this school is Average. It's not a bad school, nor is it a great school. My daughter is safe, fed, and has homework. That's why it's average. She came from Tukwila elementary and just finished up her 6th grade. She is in nearly all honors class. Honestly I think she's in honors basically 7th grade material Not because she's super extraordinary or gifted, but because the other students are below grade standard. I say this because I'm basing it on Msp state test scores. My daughter does well but I feel like she's doing grade level. They should emphasize more on teaching the students grade level.

This school is one of the worst schools my child has ever attended! As the parent of a special needs child I am as involved as possible in my child's education, the staff and administration at this school not only avoid communication efforts made to facilitate the child's progress, their lack of concern in regards to bullying is atrocious! There are a few good teachers, but their efforts are far out-weighed by the other negative aspects of this school. While I understand that most children in middle school are expected to be self reliant in a lot of aspects, when dealing with a special needs child some of those expectations are not possible, and this school district and school are not equipped to deal with situations outside of the complaisant child. Getting help in terms of academic progress with this school is next to impossible. If you are concerned about your child's education, special needs or not, avoid this entire district!

This is the best school ever the teachers are nice and great and everyone helps each other so much....but so sad i need to move suddenly so i really miss this school and staff of this school.....the most thing i miss is my friends......this is the best school ever love this school.....:)

I Love this school they help me alot and there are alot of friends i have there buut unfortunatly i moved buut i would do anytjhing to go bck its the best school ever !!!! i love it the kids there are so nice 2009-2010
