The teachers at Marcus Whitman Middle School mostly are very difficult to deal with. I say deal with because trying to work with them to help your student is a HUGE challenge. My boys have been attending this school now for two years and we're seriously considering pulling both boys out of school to do home schooling. I get that it's the pandemic and all and we're trying to learn via remote learning, but some of these teachers have ridiculous standards!! A 6th grade teacher that only allows SEVEN days to fix homework issues (unless it's turned in blank, in which case you get a big fat zero). As a parent, we aren't getting updates on our students for 2 weeks. At this point, the assignments can't be fixed regardless, so what's the point of the update?? These teachers are treating 6th graders (that are new to having multiple teachers mind you!!) like they are in college. Some teachers do care and are willing to help the 6th graders learn and work with the parent. These other teachers are ruining it for students though when they have such harsh rules and don't actually want to help the student or work with the parent. I actually had a teacher refuse to meet with me via zoom after my son's class and then gave me some longwinded answer that wasn't even addressing my question that I sent via email (because this teacher refused to meet via zoom with both my son and myself). I'll be taking a complaint to the school on Monday to show them how much communication I've had with just this one teacher (let alone the rest) and how much time I've had to spend communicating with her. I see now why many are doing homeschooling. It's just too frustrating trying to "work with" these teachers.

There are several teachers at Marcus Whitman that are wonderful. Many who do try to be effective and engaging with students are not able to teach effectively due to overly large class size and ineffective administrators who do not provide support for discipline issues with disruptive students.

Overall, I would rate this school a 2/10. There are many excellent teachers and staff at this school, who are enthusiastic, compassionate and dedicated to the students. However, there is a serious lack of leadership and diligence by the Principal and Dean of students at this school. The students are not guided to care about their school community or those in the service positions around the school, for example the custodian. During lunches students are allowed to leave food, trays and trash behind at their tables for the custodian to clean up. The hallways are often seen having trash and wrappers left behind by students. Students are not dealt with by admin when they disrupt the learning environment or bully others. Disruptive students who are removed from classrooms are left in the front office with staff who are then unable to complete their assigned job. Parents are not always contacted when their students are knowingly harassed by other students. Overall, I would rate this school a 2/10. No assigned homework. No way for a child to practice concepts he/she was taught in school and therefore ask questions. How can a child know what questions to ask if he/she has not been able to try/practice on their own? New grading system just tells parents how well (or not) their children are learning. Just shows what subjects are a childs strengths and weaknesses. No incentives for a child to learn because no letter grades are offered.

My student has excelled in the Special Education area, and for classes she integrates with others, she's also done quite well. The teachers are easy to connect with (e.g. email, conferences), and progress tracking can be done online (i.e. we know assignments and due dates, and what's been missed).
