South Whidbey High School

This was our 3rd school district within Washington State, one of which scores higher than South Whidbey by a lot. We found this school district to be adequate and just as good or better as the other districts in preparing students for college or careers. They are flexible with helping AP students get into their classes and have a good psychologist that does IEP assessments.
South Whidbey is far above the state average in key measures of college and career readiness and in test scores. I appreciate that they have embraced focusing on equity, Black Lives Matter, and teaching actual history instead of the whitewashed history of the past.

My kid goes to this school they have implemented Critical Race Theory in the curriculum. They created a divisive bully culture in the middle school and high school. There is a huge Black Lives Matter banner installed on the main road prominently placed in front of the school. I would not recommend this school.

The school really isn't the problem. The area is the problem. They are doing the best they can with what they have. I went to school here when I was younger and it didn't use to be this way, but since the recession (that didn't happen) a lot of the families have moved off the island. The lower numbers means less money. It does not say it here, but the middle school, high school, and academy actually share the same building now. So many people moved off the island that there are not enough vocational specialist, especially the ones designed to aid children that are having difficulties in certain areas or have special needs. This is primarily a retirement community with and average age of 65 and little or no support given to the development of any other class of individuals.

The resources supplied by the school are inadequate and outdated. An example would be printed material supplied for research purposes dated from 2011 with a web link with further data supplied to pdf address that no longer exists.

The educational background of the teachers are as outdated as the material they are using to teach the children. There is not a lot of great communication between the teachers.

They handle disputes well and try to help involve the parents in handling issues that might be interfering with a child's learning process. They have become quite good at compensating well for those parents that do not take an active role in their child's education. They create a friendly environment that is filled with respect and compassion.

There is a misappropriation of funds going on in that school. The teachers retreat is not designed to be a tax dollar paid party vacation. It was designed to help bring the staff up to date with all the latest teaching methods.

They do the best they can with the resources at their disposal. They have a lot of compassion, but I am afraid that all the love and patience in the world cannot compensate for a curriculum that is centered on life skills and lacks any real foundation in math, english, or science.

They are very conscious of the entire school environment. Any issues are immediately addressed and resolved in a manner that is respectful to both parties. The parent are always notified of any issues, even the most minor ones that have already been resolved before the parent was even notified. I usually hear about what happened at school from the teachers before I hear it from the my kids.

I cannot imagine a worse school to enroll your children in. There is no support from from the teachers or staff. Horribly strict with no understanding of how a students brain works. Treating the kids as if they understood things the same. I have seen no compation from this school when I went there, or when my kids went there. I eventually unrolled them and it was not to my surprise that the next school showed tremendous improvement.

The administration, specifically the VP, is the worst of the worst. Not reasonable at all!
Buildings run-down, text books archaic, limited elective selection....

I unrolled my son there last year and he said that his year was great. I have meet some of his teachers myself and I think they are the best that I've seen. The school is high quality and walking distance from our house. Overall I think it is a fantastic school.

South Whidbey High school is the perfect small town American school. I have had two daughters in this high school, and one is off at Harvard in her third year. Small schools thrive on accountability which becomes a tremendous asset to both academics and to social health. The staff and teachers have provided excellent teaching and resources during challenging economic times. The athletic and extracurricular programs are great. Thank you SWHS!

The four period day at SWHS, along with shrinking enrollment, has made scheduling a nightmare--especially if your student is in band. One "extra" class as an underclassman, and your child will have to give up chemistry, physics, additional foreign language, or band (for example) as a junior or senior--or pay to take a class online. At the same time, registration requires students select six alternatives! If your student gets a class s/he didn't really want or need, s/he is stuck. "You signed up for it!" the counselor will say. Hmm. Choir is now an after school club. Spanish is the only world language offered. The classes of 2015 and 2016 are required to take two years of world language. The four period day makes it difficult for students to do Running Start or internships during the school day. Some graduates DO end up going to Ivy League schools, but many others don't test into college level math at the community college.

SWHS is a great school. Athletics have been good, some years great. Academics are good and you can get a great education if you choose the right teachers, which is the same in any school. Many of our AP teachers and classes out perform private schools across the state. There are many ways to be involved in the school and community and the blame cannot be put on the school if a student chooses not to be involved. You get out of the school what you put into, if you want a great education there are the tools necessary to achieve one.
