Central island, along West Beach Road: Off Base Area of Town

Review

Whidbey Island is surrounded by water, mountains, and forests, off the I-5 corridor yet close enough to access metro-Seattle/Tacoma for sports events, shopping, medical care, internat'l air travel. In summer, island outdoor activities that include boating, fishing, biking, camping, and whale watching attract tourists, but in the winter, locals reclaim their paradise. Coupeville's historic waterfront, Fort Casey, and Admiralty Head Lighthouse are venues for arts/crafts fairs, Native American festivals, kite-flying. Ferries to the Olympic Peninsula and Victoria, BC are close by while bridges link the island to the mainland tulip fests, aerospace museums, colleges, shopping malls, Cascade Mts. for skiing, hiking. Weather tends to be more sunny than on the mainland and seldom drops below freezing. Residents tend to be small-town friendly, welcoming toward the Navy (many are retirees), supportive of schools (facilities are pretty new), involved in local theater and musical groups.

  • Recommendations: I recommend Deseret Drive for its security. The private road makes it safe for children to ride bikes or walk pets, and neighbors keep a nearly constant watch. It is centrally located btwn Oak Harbor with its shopping advantages and Coupeville with its cultural activities. The commute to NAS Whidbey is practically a straight shot up West Beach Road (not a state highway) with only 2 stop signs - no signal lights until just outside the base gate & takes from 15-20 minutes. The Olympic Mts. cast what locals call "a rain shadow" which means this side of the island receives more sunshine than the rest of Whidbey. Most of the time it is quiet, and when we hear the jets and 'copters, we consider that The Sound of Freedom.
