Naval Avenue Elementary School

We joined Naval Avenue this year with 2 of our kids and have had a great experience. Teachers who are engaged and love what they do, very good at communicating. They have specialists to assist those who need extra help and have worked really hard at bringing the pandemic kids up to the grade level with small work groups and individual instruction. I think it is important to note that parent involvement is crucial to a better school experience, you get out what you put into it. We collaborate with the teachers to work on each of our kids challenges and opportunities and see vast improvement in their academic and social/emotional skills. As soon as a bully issue arose, we spoke with the teacher who not only dealt with the individual student, but also did an entire unit for the class on standby bullying and how it affects people too. I was impressed and learned the bully apologized to my kid and they have been friends since. We were given an opportunity to move our kids and have decided we like where they are and the support from this school has been great.

Homework should not exist in elementary school. These kids are pulling almost a full workday, then they're expected to work when they get home. Too much. They'll have their whole lives to grind away, K-3 should not.

They only care about teaching for the state test. Everything else is secondary. Fostering a love of learning is not on the menu. They want to create STEMbots. Any kids who don't perform like automatons are ostracized.

In a general way the leadership is competent, but if your student requires special carve-outs to be successful, don't expect them to happen. Their strategy seems to be doubling down on the pressure to conform.

I have been fighting the same fight for 3 years. My child does not do well with pressure tests and speed challenges. That's all they do at this school. Everything is done with a stopwatch. If your child can't keep up, they're sidelined and made to feel like failures.

Bullies pick on my kid, my kid replies by calling the bully a swear word. Guess which one gets in trouble? This has been a pattern. My child's reactions are seen as more problematic than the children who taunt and torment. This is the attitude of the teachers all the way down to the bus drivers.

Disappointing. I loved elementary school as a child. I had hoped for the same for my children, but at this school, I've only seen teachers who are under pressure to meet state standards. They put this ahead of what I would consider the foundational concerns of an elementary school. My child now has a deeply imprinted adversarial relationship with school that I don't know if we'll ever be able to overcome.

I have a friend with a child who has learning disabilities and she has been furious with this school's response to her child's needs.

Things got better when Mr Avenson arrived. Before he was here my daughter was immediately bullied and assaulted by 3rd graders when she was in Kindergarten.

Kindergarten was overkill but it balanced out in first grade.

We have not had a single teacher here that has both enthusiasm, and the ability to treat students equally. We have witnessed themes of favoritism, inappropriate teaching from a developmental standpoint, and now a teacher who spouts political and religious dogma in class. There are good teachers here, we have just experienced all of the worst this school has to offer.

In most ways yes. It appears that bullying is a top priority. However, with teachers engaging in favoritism and preaching personal beliefs those lines become blurred and it is not possible to model these behaviors.

Leadership must do better at defending the rights of students by knowing when to seek proper discipline when teachers refuse to treat students equally. The teachers need training in civil rights and to understand that their own beliefs and values may not match a student's and that bullying students into conformity is unacceptable and unlawful. We have experienced varying degrees of this with two teachers and one substitute at Naval Ave.

4/10 maybe. We simply have gotten the short end of the stick at this school and we are terribly sad about it. We had all of the worst teachers Spanish Immersion had to offer. Now we're in a regular classroom and the teacher would be fine if she kept her personal opinions to herself and wasn't insistent on violating students rights.

My son has been assaulted at this school on multiple occasions. The teachers at this school neglected to inform me of any of these incidents, when confronted teachers assured me things would be dealt with in the future.. This was not true, the other day my child was choked by another student... Guess what the teachers conveniently "forgot" to inform me about... So if you would like to be notified if something were to happen to you'r child I would suggest you pick a different school.

This was not true, the other day my child was choked by another student... Guess what the teachers conveniently "forgot" to inform me about... If your kid doesn't tell you when something happens at school, it probably seems like a great school, too bad that is not the case.. It's not a great school, they just hide their screw ups due to inadequate supervision by inadvertently neglecting to inform the parents. So if you would like to be notified if something were to happen to your child, I would suggest you pick a different school.

All three of my children went here. My now 4th grader misses the school very much. The principal and all the staff were great. Two of my kids did the Spanish Immersion program which was amazing. One child got services that these got him to grade level so he no longer needed them.

My daughter was in the dual immersion program at Naval for Kindergarten. Her teacher turned her weaknesses into strengths. The school is small. It makes it feel like one extended family. You go to the front desk and the secretary knows who your kid is. It's amazing.

Naval Avenue is a good school. The Spanish program has some excellent teachers and it's amazing how quickly the students start learning the language. I feel like the shift to common core has hindered the Spanish program a bit in that they now have to use materials that are really designed for fluent Spanish speakers rather than those learning it as a second language. In the end the kids will probably have a better grasp of the language, but the process of getting there is harder now. Some of the office staff including the principal seem more concerned about policies and structure than make the experience best for the kids. However, some of that may be mandated from higher up. The only other negative I have found to the Spanish program is that it seems to attract all the "super parents" who think they and their children are superior. In some grades there is competition to see who can be the most involved parents and it feels a little like the popular kids and the not popular kids in Junior High. There are lots of really great families and parents in the program too, but it's just a different mix than you get in a regular elementary school. All in all it's a good school, but I think more recess, music and P.E. would benefit these students more than extra worksheets and homework.

Like most schools it's a mixed group. There are some really awesome teachers and some that aren't quite as great. It also depends a lot on your child's personality with some teachers.

My son had a long packet to at the end of the week. At times it felt like a lot for kindergarden but the results from it are worth the amount of work.

My son attended the kindergarden Spanish Immersion Program with maestra West. I am incredibly happy with the school program and staff, he got an excellent teacher. Learned to speak spanish right away in a very comfortable open environment, started reading, counting and singing songs. Would highly recommend the program and school, it is very diverse and welcoming. My son loved his teacher and school.

The team leads by example. Teachers and Admin are same page. They encourage students to be accountable .

Fantastic team of Teachers and Admin. Parent involvement is top-notch. Kids love this school. Schools size and class sizes are optimal.

this place tries to cover alot of academic bases which is unusual for a public school of this size.
