All 3 of our kids went to YCA through pre-k. There were particular staff members and aspects of the program that elevated it above simple daycare, but when I compare it to the private school they now attend, I don't think YCA compares overall. I think the fact that it is a for-profit business is a problem in that some decisions are made not on the basis of what best serves the educational needs of a particular child, but on the owner's bottom line and/or what is a better 'business decision.' For example, lots of kids don't need another year of 'letter of the week' when they get to pre-k but are already pretty much reading. Not offering an alternative to the lock-step program when this is the case is an opportunity missed and one that a lot of other schools are able to harness.
