I have had two children come up through Summit Atlas Middle School program. They are completely different learners and fueled by different motivations and Summit Atlas has been wonderful for both of them. I have had one child utilize the Special Education services at Summit Atlas and they have thrived, becoming a completely self-started student striving for straight As (even when parents are ok with less). The mentorship relationship between students and staff is wonderful and sets Summit Atlas apart from other middle schools.

Very small school, the high school smaller than middle. Gym activities little to none, teachers being tired or disrespectful,students wouldn't pay attention at all, and are openly foul mouthed.

Summit Atlas met each of my children where they were uniquely at both from an academic standpoint and a social emotional standpoint. Throughout ours years at this school, so many invested staff took the time and energy to really know my children, and help address their needs as they changed. As a parent, I have always felt Atlas has been a partner with me in helping my children through their education and preparation for the world.

Summit Atlas has been great for our son. Started in 8th grade, now in 10th and have had great teachers. The expeditions are a fantastic way for kids to explore different career options and skill development. Good spot for kids who might get a little lost or pushed aside academically or socially in a bigger school environment.

My son started at Summit Atlas as a sophomore after struggling in a traditional public school. He had lost interest in learning, his confidence was low, and school felt like a dead end. But Summit completely turned things around. From day one, he was welcomed, supported, and seen for who he is. The smaller classes and dedicated staff helped him re-engage and find purpose. Hes now doing amazing, on track to graduate early, andmost importantlyhe actually enjoys school. The transformation in his attitude and performance has been incredible. Summit Atlas gave him a fresh start and helped him believe in himself again. As a parent, Im so grateful for this community and the opportunities its given my son.

We have been really impressed with our sons experience at Summit Atlas. It doesnt feel like hes just another student, but instead a valued part of the community. This wasnt the case in his previous school. We like the academic structure of the school and have seen our sons Math and English skills dramatically improve since switching to Summit Atlas from Sylvester. He feels like he belongs and is accepted at this school, which also has been a struggle for him in the past.

The staff at Summit Atlas is communicative and caring. Were relieved to have found a place our son can grow and develop the skills he needs to succeed. We highly recommend this small, community school.

The academic portion of the school is adequate and the school offers several programs that positively engage the students. Unfortunately bullying and harassment among the students is out of control. The environment is not safe for the many students who are targeted. The administration/staff seem to be hesitant or unable to get the bullying under control in order to create a warm and welcoming environment. Along with many other students, transferring our student to a different school seemed the only solution to protect their well-being.

My child has gone to Summit Atlas for all of MS and is now almost a month into their 9th grade year on the HS side. Were quite happy with our choice. Here are some things we like best:

(1) the mentor program. My child had an *amazing* mentor for all 3y of middle school. Its like homeroom, except they stay with the same mentor pod all 3y of MS, and then if they transition to Summit Atlas HS they get a new mentor that they stay with for 4y. Kiddo developed some strong bonds w their pod mates (peers) and we joke that the mentor was their school mom she had his back if things got hard, and she also pushed them to do well but also be a good person.

(2) The Expeditions program. Theres not traditional electives at Summit Atlas MS, but every 6 weeks or so all academic classes go on hold so that kids can do 2 weeks of Expeditions which are like extended electives. They have a morning and afternoon session. Some of the options are on campus (martial arts, Korean language, game development, digital photography a mix of online courses and live in person courses) and some are off campus (salmon heroes at Seahurst Beach, outdoor ed at Herons nest, swimming and rock climbing at WSHC, etc). My child likes the off campus ones.

3) Small school, but big enough. My kid developed a core group of friends and felt known and seen by instructors, but the community isnt so small that EVERYONE knows everyone elses business if that makes sense.

For HS my teen was lucky to get offered spots at Aviation HS, Maritime HS, the I.B. program at Mt. Rainierbut in the end chose to stay at Summit for the people. Were glad they did. Our Summit student comes home most afternoons and gushes about the cool teachers and tells us what theyve been learning about statistics or the French Revolution or the narrative theyre writing. Were happy here!

Our daughter is just wrapping up middle school at Summit Atlas. To say it has been a wonderful experience would be an understatement. It's been a magical experience for her. Our daughter started 6th grade as a shy person. She ended 8th grade confidently acting as the "master of ceremonies" for her class's 8th grade promotion! I give 100% of credit for that confidence to the amazing human beings stewarding her journey for the past 3 years.

Summit Atlas is doing things right. Not sweating the small stuff. Allowing students to be co-creators of the educational journey. At Summit Atlas, a student's idea is resourced into a lesson or project. Teachers are truly there to "see" each student and bring out the best in them.

We have been very impressed by the way the school builds relationships with each studnet/family and through their mentor pods (think: homeroom, only like family) they have created the conditions for student's to feel invested in their school.

Academically, Summit Atlas has been pivotal for our daughter. Teachers seem very passionate about their subject area and that passion informs the way they choose lessons and it gets the students engaged also. Our daughter really learned from the books she studies in English with Ms. Uhl. Enrichment activities brought the literature to life. Math with Ms. Henty and Ms. Nguyen was rigorous and engaging. Our daughter made great strides in that area and overcame her phobia of Math, because of her Teachers. Mr. Massie teaches with intentionality and insight. He understands the magnitude of of his charge: helping his students make sense of the world we live in, by always asking why? And digging deep for answers.

Throughout her time at Summit Atlas, our daughter has made cross-cultural friendships, demonstrated advocacy, and learned leadership skills that will serve her for the rest of her life.

The expeditions program at the school is amazing. 3-4x per year, students take a deep dive into extra-curricular interests. Our daughter enjoyed digital photography, fashion design and cartooning. The program really encourages students to try new things and the dean of expeditions, Mr. Colmus finds interesting community partners to ensure a wide selection of choices for all students.

We have appreciated the attention to safety at Summit Atlas. The building is always locked, and staff is outside- welcoming students in and wishing them well at the end of the day.

I could go on and on. We love this school.

Hi, I'm a current student at Summit Atlas. One of the things that I think stands out to me here is the learning experience. A lot of teachers care about you and want you to succeed. Sure, there are some teachers who don't care very much, but to me, that's most schools. While the teachers are a 4-5/5, the Social Emotional Support is definitely a straight up 1/5. The staff and the administrators do not care about what you have to say, especially the deans (not going to say who). They are very strict about certain things (no wireless headphones, no phones, etc) but ignore things like bullying, depression, and peer-related incidents. Their restorative approach to learning seems to work in the beginning, but the mentor-mentie relationship is more like a babysitter-baby situation. They frequently have open-houses that include the student and their families, but there is a lack of community although they say that it is one of their core values. Expeditions are fun. The school leaders are easily distracted and lack focus and empathy towards problems. For example, a friend was cussed out on a bus, but the person who was in charge could not hear anything, even though there was yelling and screaming. I feel that some of the staff and the occasional teacher need to be educated on culture and religion, as some of them use derogatory terms and incorrect names for student clothing and beliefs. So, that's my review. I think that overall the school is mid, but since it's newer, it has room for improvement. Unlike other schools, it doesn't have a set reputation, and I think that's an advantage for them to keep on improving on their behalf.

I think that Summit is an okay place to be at. It's not the end of the world, but I find it boring. When the student is finished with the work assigned in class, they are supposed to "Self-direct" to create better skills of independence. I think this is a good idea, but when you're finished and up-to-date on the platform, there is little to nothing teachers can do to support you. When they do try and support you, they offer more online classes from different areas of the internet which you barely understand or find boring after a few weeks. The one thing I appreciate in Summit is the expedition's varieties. From online college lectures, mural painting, and google IT support, the variety of expeditions (or long electives,) is anything but limited. But, the classes are too long. There are only two core classes a day (plus two others; a self-direction class and a homeroom), and when the first one is over, you're wiped out and ready for lunch(the first core class period from 930-1120). In the end, it's an alright school that needs improving.

I love this school a lot, we get so much support and the teachers are endlessly caring and helpful. We do fun things so its not all just work. But I really do love it here at Summit. I do not have a single bad thing to say about it.

I cannot stress highly enough what a great school Summit Atlas has been for my son. Every teacher knows every student, the kids get individual attention, the school teaches the kids how to set their own learning goals and achieve them, which sets them up for college success and career success down the road, and every kids has a mentor that they stay with for three years. They have their first class with their mentor and "pod" of students every day. Their mentor helps make sure they are on track or get additional assistance if needed, and they tackle social/emotional learning all together in their pod.
My child is never overwhelmed by the workload, and rarely has to take work home with him - it is set up so he can complete it during his school day. This is the school I always hoped for my children to have!

It is an overall decent school, better than the other middle school I went to but not as good as my elementary school. I do like almost all of my teachers, but the communication about events that are happening, and stuff like that is very bad. They also handle bullying poorly. Self-directed learning time is awful for students who are caught up, becasue we don't have anything to do and so we just sit around and be bored, but then we get in trouble for not doing work, which is really frustrating.

**and its use of technology to provide a platform of curriculum available to parents and guardians to understand what their student is working on at school.

This electronic platform of curriculum--with an overview of curricular units and a day-by-day plans tab--is a key reason we chose Summit as our son transitioned from elementary school to middle school during the 2020-21 school year. Even though school was all online due to the pandemic, we could see and understand the lessons on the platform to assist him where needed. For the 2021-22 school year, Summit has shifted back to in-person schooling, but we still use the platform to check in with our son after school, reviewing the work he was assigned for the day to see what he completed and what he might need help with.

While all of the reasons above contribute to the success of our son and the other students at Summit, by far the school's greatest asset is its dedicated teachers. Our son's 6th grade math teacher, Ms. Nguyen, would develop individualized lessons for him and meet with him once per week after school to support him; and his special education teacher, Ms. Mills, makes him look forward to going to school for the first time in his life. She makes school fun and helps him develop his leadership skills.

My daughter loves this school. She starts in 6th grade and is thriving. She had a tough time at her elementary school, which was highly rated and an excellent school, but not the type of learning that worked for her. The class sizes are small, the project based work is perfect for my daughter, and having everything onlineX on her computer, is really teaching her what the real world is going to be like. Plus, she can easily check if her progress is on time, and if not, what she needs to work on. She was so unorganized at a traditional school, and she is completely on it at this school. It is amazing what a change I have seen. Great student body, great staff, great administration.

It was hard first, transitioning to Summit but now it's okay. It's very diverse, the teachers are amazing, but the students might get in some trouble. We have no homework, which as a student is a big plus, but sometimes it's a little hard to follow along. All of our school is online, meaning it's an online platform so some kids will get on unblocked games, and not pay as much attention to the teachers.

I enjoy Summit, but it does have its ups and downs. One week we had two physical fights and while I'm writing this the bathrooms are shut down for females because of destruction. There are numerous writings on the bathroom walls, and the lunch lines are VERY long. It takes 10 minutes max to even GET your food! Then you need to eat in 10 minutes. It's hard and we have no recess, but that's a classic for middle school. PE is also an elective, which I'm pretty hot and cold about.

Anyways, I recommend it if you can deal with a bit of drama!

The teachers do seem to care, but the school is very disorganized. Parent communications are mainly just marketing materials explaining how great the school is, with little useful information about what's going on. Because of the way they have (dis)organized everything, it's very hard to tell how behind your child is until it's way too late. Then the school will offer to make it up to you by inflating their grade, rather than do their job and make sure kids learn what they need to know. A lot of the lessons are completely online. Kids watch videos or visit web pages, then take multiple choice tests over and over until they finally pass. Their goal is to have kids take ownership of their learning, but what has actually happened is that the school staff has walked away from their responsibility to make sure kids are doing what they need to do to learn. If you are an entirely self motivated student who doesn't need any extra support and will work hard because you care about your education, you might be really successful here, but you'd also be successful anywhere, and you should probably attend the school that has a wide variety of courses for you to choose from.

I really like this place. Its really diverse and they believe that EVERY PERSON HAS A VOICE, I have great friends and supportive teachers. Some the classes were a bit rocky at first, but I only think that its that because this school is different than others. I'm the Student Council and I feel like I have so much power, yet other people still have a choice. We have breaks during class and you get to leave early if you have done all of your work, this motivates you to get your work done. The teachers are nice, they give people a voice, and they support all shapes and kinds. I really hope that everyone should have a school like this. I totally recommend this to your kids.

This year is my senior year at Summit Atlas. During my time at Atlas, it has been an incredible experience since the first day I stepped foot inside the school. I came to Summit Atlas during my sophomore year and met incredible teachers and peers who are super supportive and kind. The community of Summit Atlas is like a big amazing family of teachers, and friends that are wanting to grow academically and socially together as a whole and are not willing to leaving behind anyone, no matter what. I was never the student who loved going to school, But my time here in Summit Atlas made me want to go to school to learn and hopefully become a person whom my whole family could be proud of. I am very glad to have come to Summit Atlas and the result they showed me about how I developed from who I was, from freshman year, and whom I am becoming, now and beyond, from day 1 to now present is quite astonishing. Being at Summit Atlas since day one I've notice the progress this school has made towards it's goals. It may now be perfect now but it is getting better, but in my opinion I love how this school allows you to get ahead and be independent with your work so that I can always challenge myself.

The school isn't perfect, but no school is so I think people need to cut it some slack. In terms of education the school does really well when it comes to the content it gives to students the amount of independence we have when it comes to learning. When students need help teachers are always up for helping even after class hours, it's simply up to the student to reach out for help and accept the offers. Additionally, the school really believes in progress. My writing would be nowhere near the level it is now if it wasn't for the curriculum at this school that has made me practice my skill many times over the last 4 years. There are issues with the more superficial aspects of the school yes but nothing that really interferes with education. The people and teachers of the school are the real highlight.

Summit Atlas is a great school for students of all backgrounds, all races, genders, sexual orientations and religions. This is an accepting school that meets all students at their individual academic level and builds them up, it is an opportunity for many students to put behind who they were in the past academically and as a person and to build themselves up.

This school does have problems that do need addressing, but aside from these it has its upsides

Concerning learning differences, I think they need significant work, especially with SAT prep. they used the exact same material for every single student, and I found it incredibly boring and even had an anxiety attack!

Regarding leadership, I often feel that its leadership is acting without consideration for students, ignoring the switch to zoom and the problems its caused me, they've often forgotten to inform students about closures, late starts, and classes/schedules being switched around, and they don't tell us about even a quarter of the reasons why they enacted seemingly arbitrary changes every single year, to the point I have heard one student mock them by saying 'Oh, we just decided to change its name 17 times in between years because its more efficient' All of this, and you start to realize why you often hear people claiming that the school is trying to drive them away, and I have personally found it easy to assume their explanations are more often them making up excuses

About bullying, they have accidentally fostered a hatred of freshmen, as they began locking restrooms because a few of them were skipping classes in there, even when they had transferred months before! however, it has proven a safe space, as of my junior year, I only recall one fight ever happening

Concerning teachers, you will likely hear students complain about them seeming condescending, and I can understand somewhat where that comes from, especially recently since my mind has started recognizing teachers and admin as a 'Them' that doesn't care about the 'Us' of students much more

About virtual school, I am still mad about the switch to zoom, one semester later because I would be/was dropped from calls 4-5 times each (that's per call, not per day) because I have a family that is all online simultaneously! unlike last year, where I never got dropped from calls when using google meets, and yet, I feel the school (admin especially) has been pushing my concerns aside, and that really hurts because I take this issue very personally! Even worse, my opinion about the switch is shared by many students, who are frustrated with technical difficulties unique to zoom, it has also made many of the aforementioned problems even worse!

My son has attended public school, two different private schools and this is the first school that has met our high standard. My son has an IEP and they have gone above and beyond to make sure he has the support he needs. I have been impressed by their approach to education. They have the whole child in mind and it shows. I have also been very impressed with the way they handled the pandemic. They made sure that all children in attendance had an opportunity to an education. I more than recommend Summit Atlas to other families.

Summit has been super helpful for the way that I work because I like to get ahead in work and that's exactly what they let you do. Summit is so personalized. You can work with a group, a partner, or just by yourself if that benefits your learning habits. The mentor program is also really nice because every week my mentor checks in with me, see how I am academically, and how I am doing outside of school. What I also love about Summit is almost everything is student lead, the clubs are student led. Planning what we are going to do for celebrations, and fun days are all student lead!

Overall the school really does challenge its students to think outside the box and to become more independent. Preparedness for college is a big deal, rightfully so, and this school certainly does the job with the way writing skills are developed each year and the way we learn how to present information to an audience. Most of the issues that people have with the school are issues youll find at any other school too (I mean what school doesnt have bullying?) but I think that this school is certainly underrated when it comes to its online curriculum. Our transition to online school was great bc we already had a platform in place and with the fact that every student already had a chrome book at home well it made a lot of the process simpler. The teachers are really caring and they actually take the time to check in with students who need help and choose to accept it. The leadership tries its best to bring forward a traditional high school experience without forgetting the core values that make the school stand out in the first place.

My middle schooler has attended Summit Atlas for the past two years. The approach Summit takes to engage students in their own path to learning is really effective. After the first week, my middle schooler came home talking about his goals for the year and for his "middle school career" so that he could get into advanced classes in high school, make good grades, and get into a good university. This is coming from a kid who nearly hated school in elementary, who struggled to read in the early years and was behind in math requiring many summers of work to get him caught up. Now, this kid is in advanced math and works hard to get nearly straight As. We've had great experiences with all the teachers at the school. They take the time to get to know your student and genuinely care about them academically and personally. Every conversation I've had with any teachers has left me feeling grateful that there are such thoughtful and caring people looking after my student. One challenge at this school is there are some kids that have behavioral problems and who can be disruptive and even racist and sexist (especially to non-conforming genders). Sometimes it's hard to hear about the words that were said in the bathroom or on the bus, but I imagine this is just part of life, and it's good to have these conversations now rather than later. I'll also say that Summit transitioned with total ease (at least from the outside, I'm sure internally it has been stressful) to the COVID-19 situation. All the kids have laptops and do most of their work from their computers, so it was fairly simple for them to switch to "working from home" with online video support for their classes. I was amazed at how quickly they were able to resume teaching. Out of all the schools in the area, we feel so lucky to be at Summit where the 2019/2020 school year didn't skip a beat because of COVID-19. In short, Summit provides a great learning platform for all kids, whether they are advanced or need a little extra help. The teachers are energetic and caring. Even though the online learning that Summit does is not traditional, our experience with it and this school has been incredibly positive.

We have had nothing but a positive experience at this school. We have found more support for our daughter socially, emotionally, and academically so that she is now thriving. Whereas in previous years she was drowning at our neighborhood public middle school.

I've seen my classmates get bullied in front of teachers and ignore it completely. I even intervened once because my teacher felt like they didn't need to and decided to watch.

The kids are chaotic and it takes forever for people to get calm cause they let the bad kids off easy.

It combines the special education kids with the normal, and I support Special Education but it gets chaotic when you try to merge it with regular education.

When I've been aware of bullying, staff response has been swift, just, and restorative. The balance between giving a consequence (to deter bullying) and restoring the students (to teach better behavior) is just right.

For the most part, homework is unfinished work from school. Importantly, it's always something that students know how to complete independently. There is never the "I don't understand what I'm supposed to do!" feeling that I remember from school.

The teachers here all recognize that relationship comes first--so many struggles never emerge when this is established. But, at the same time, teachers hold their students to high standards and always communicate the understanding that their students can achieve.

The administration here leads by example, and never ask students or staff to do something they aren't willing to do. They know all student names, and frequently teach classes, lead mentor groups, etc. Further, they keep accurate and frequent data on student achievement which they use to make decisions about instruction.

Summit Atlas has a separate resource room for students who need extra support, quiet rooms for students who need solitude to focus, trained and certified staff who specialize in students with learning differences, and a generally supportive climate.
