I don't appreciate attending a PTA meeting in the school gym filled with other parents, and the principal, Patrica Hoyle, addressed the percentage of students that have "statistically missed school". "Studies showed that 36% or whatever percentage of the white students don't miss school; however, the blacks," and I'm just like, did I hear that right? She did it again, again, referring to the African American students as "the blacks that have missed so much school and that they need to improve". As an ally, I should have embarrassed & corrected her in that assembly. This is not a leader; this is who I don't want to lead my children. Just because she had been a principal for 10/20/30 + years, she can continue her education, tone, and humanity just as she holds her staff members accountable. Find another school; she's not out there to treat every kid equally, only selective students.

The principal needs to give out consequences to children who misbehave and harm others. The lack of support the Principal brings to the table is enough for me to want to transfer my kids. She/Tricia refuses to listen and learn from Parents and Teachers when situations get difficult. It's Fairwood Elementary's job to prepare kids for Middle School and to behave appropriately. This is not being done. All of the teachers my children have had have been amazing, inclusive, and very communicative.

This school really lacks consistency, order and structure. The Principal favors and rewards bad behavior among students who cause disruptions and fights or physical harm to others. Teachers and students have suffered life altering injuries due to negligence from behavior issues that hold zero consequences. A teacher suffered an injury so severe she had to have back surgery. The student who injured the teacher faced no suspension or consequences and continued hurting students through the year. Additionally other students began classroom riots throwing chairs and other objects and physical fights bringing police and ambulances multiple times throughout the year. Kids suffered from concussions to bruises and trauma and yet not a single suspension or expulsion was dealt. The kids truly run this school and very little is learned. On top of it all they have a horrible rat infestation that staff claims is being taken care of by the janitor but yet students still find dead rats around the school. It is so sad as there have been a few good teachers come to Fairwood but generally aren't there long as if they don't conform to the chaos they're put on the chopping block. The District is also a mess and the Superintendent would rather increase his salary and spend $100k on his office remodel than take care of problems at the lower level. He's rarely visits schools and has only been to Fairwood once in the last 5 years. Lastly, prepare for loaded classrooms as most classes had 27-29 students.

My kids loved this school. I loved this school. My son's teacher was excellent, my daughters was disappointing, but the administrators, the parents, and the PTSA were all wonderful to work with.

We had to deal with bullying and it was handled appropriately. This is an example school in regards to bullying.

I am not relating to many of the reviews below. I am over the moon with the support I have received as a new mom to elementary. It has a small town feel. They wholeheartedly care for the children! And the teachers...There is not enough comment space to express my gratitude to them!

We have 3 kids at Fairwood Elem and have been there for 5 years. Our kids love school and feel safe and at home there. The teachers care about the kids and work hard to make sure they are continually learning. There are many great school programs, and the PTSA is awesome and provides even more learning and fun opportunities for the students. It is a neighborhood school in the wonderful Fairwood Greens development, and it really has the neighborhood family feeling - just what you want for an elementary school. We always feel welcome and communication with all staff is easy and friendly. Music, PE and drama teachers are excellent too! Couldn't be happier to have our kids at Fairwood Elementary.

Fairwood Elementary cares about the well being of their students. The teachers challenges their students according to their skill level. They care about their safety and makes sure that they are home with their parents when they do not show up for school.

The parent involvement at Fairwood is amazing, and most of the teachers are great. However, the caring attitude toward individual students is just not there. Supervision of children is lacking, especially at the front office. The attitude of the front office staff towards working parents is quite rude. As a working parent, I cannot always be in the "inner loop", so I often have questions or need to call ahead from my workplace to find out more information about school events, etc. I am often meet with a rude attitude when I have questions. Also, the school doesn't always know where my child is, and that is the lack of supervision part. "It's the child's responsibility", um they are children. It is the adult's responsibility to know where the children are. It almost makes me nervous when I cannot locate my child. If you didn't go to this school since kindergarten or are not highly involved in the PTSA, quite frankly you are not a part of the "inner circle" culture of the school and are treated differently. It makes me sad for families who may not speak the language, or for new students, that they treated as lesser people.

The Explorer Program did not work for my family. I regret the time spent in this program. My child was bullied and was not treated fairly by the teacher. There is no "whole child" concept at this program as was stated. We are now at a different school and my child is in a class with a wonderful teacher. My child is very very happy!

The only thing positive about this school is the teachers. They care about the students and do the best they can with the lack of support from the Principal and District. As a parent I expect that our children's safety and education would come first. But this is not the case at Fairwood Elementary. Apparently it is OK for students in a classroom to kick, hit, spit, bite and throw sharp objects on a daily basis. There is not one day that goes by that my daughters classroom is not severely interrupted, and education stops. Students get rewarded for their bad behavior by going to the principals office and "talking" about their actions. Then they are allowed back into class to continue disrupting. This school and district is only concerned about meeting core standards and budget needs. THIS SCHOOL NEEDS HELP FROM THE STATE TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE ON HOW TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT CHILDREN.

Parent involvement at Fairwood is amazing! You could not ask for better programs. Bullying though is a big issue at Fairwood. Responses to bullying are weak. At recess if kids are "popular" (yes, this is going on even with kindergarten) kids are excluded, picked on and harrassed. The more Iisten to children from the school and parents I realize how big the problem is. Good neighborhood and PTA, but my child is miserable there, and I will be moving her to a school with teachers more active in creating an antibullying environment.

A great elementary school! Teachers have lots of energy! The music teacher is very inspirational! Very active and supportive PTSA!

I am very glad my children do not attend this school. I have found the teachers to be rude and discourteous. I have found the teachers at other Kent Schools to be quite effective. These teachers must have been the lowest on the seniority list.

Fairwood Elementary was one of the best elementary schools my son ever attended. We moved a couple of times in his early years, so we experienced a few different schools. The leadership at Fairwood is helpful and understanding, yet does expect kids to live up to a standard (a realistic one). Both the teachers my son had were absolutely wonderful! I would highly recommend this as an elementary school. THe only drawback to this school is the Junior High that it feeds into - Northwood Middle School has not proved impressive, in fact quite the opposite.
