The counselor at this school (Serena) told a student she couldn’t care less about the students nor the classes they had. She didn’t even try communicating with her students when they needed help. She claimed she was always busy when in reality she always on vacation. Also when she was a substitute a student was cussing at another student and she sat there and didn’t interfere and it led to the student moving schools.

Admin, teachers, support and secretarial staff are top notch here! Secretarial staff are super welcoming and down to earth. I've had 2 kids at Totem and both excelled there.

Totem is a great school and I am currently a student here. Yes, this school does have bullies but every school will have them you can't protect them from it. Administration, teachers, and staff often assure students that bullying is taken very seriously at Totem and encourage us to be an upstander and not a bystander by letting a trusted teacher or staff member know. Teachers at totem often are a big help. As a student, I ask you to be patient with teachers. I understand they can be really annoying sometimes (trust me I have to see them 5 days a week) but they do try their best to make sure my fellow acquaintances and I have a great education and are ready for high school. I may have been uncivil in the past but I look forward to trying my best and trying to understand where my classmates and teachers are coming from when I get offended or angry. I truly recommend checking out Totem for your child to attend Totem. Who knows maybe I will see them around and become their friend!

My son was transfer there in the middle of the year from MMS which is as bad as this one, but this one it was truly an eye opening for me as parent of how bad the public school system is, there’s drugs, vape, gangs, bullying and everything bad you can think of as a parent. We cannot just blame the teachers or the staff because kids are the reflection of what they see at home so we as a parents have the duty to teach them what’s wrong and what’s right, also morals and principles and basic decency as humans which we apparently are lacking off now a days, so the trash that you see at that school is the reflection of broken homes and lack of parental control, the school is just there to teach math, social studies etc not to raise your children that’s your responsibility as parent, but as the school staff goes they just ignore my complaints and evidence of drugs at school send to my son at his cellphone also gang signs I took him out and homeschool him for the rest of the year now he will be attending a Christian private school because public school system is unbearable!

When I came to this school in 6th grade, I was looking forward to meeting new students and teachers. Instead, I was constantly bullied, ridiculed, and my self-esteem became almost nonexistent. The teachers never helped me, and either failed me without discussing it or passed me without making sure I was actually understanding what they were teaching. Overall, the school is like a disgusting prison full of ignorance and hatred.

NO longer MJHS but NOW Totem... I highly recommend doing the MCEP route at Totem. If you are looking for Parent involvement and access to your teachers this is the place to be. To address some of the previous concerns from years back. The teachers spend a great deal of time with each child that has the willingness to learn. And for those kids that don't want to be educated the teachers do try their best to push them. The parents are able to come in at anytime, if you do not get the response you need, ask again because someone there will care enough to find an answer. So that addresses the next issue, yes, of course there will be teachers that maybe shouldn't be there, this is true for ANY school. I found that as parents we are able to change that by being there and supportive, working with teachers. Plenty of life skills activities and clubs. TV3, Robotics, Leadership and ASB, jazzband and many more. Administrative leadership is lacking, there is a current overall and an anticipation of great changes in that area. Lastly kids love to be there. They have an active PTSA and they ensure activities which include many. If your child wants options and you want involvement than go here

I am a student at this school right now. I am in 6th grade, my first year here. It is the best school ever!! I am in hi-cap math, language Arts and Social Studies and in leadership. The teacher here helps you a lot, they make sure you know every thing you need to pass. It is very easy to learn because it is easy to understand. They also teaches it in a fun way. There is a very good music program. Band, choir, and general music (piano). We have Spirit assembly every month. Teachers and students get to play some games. it is a fun way of getting everyone together sometimes. There is also a lot of clubs and after and before school activities like robotics club, TLC ( After school Totem learning center), drum line, jazz band, jazz choir, break dancing club for boys and girls, and a lot more. I think this school is good for everyone!

I'm a student at Totem in 6th grade and it's amazing! We have spirit assemblies every month, where students and staff play games and show our school spirit! The teachers here are wonderful, they care so much about you, they are family to me! We recently had a death at Totem, our administrator. It was a very emotional day, but the great thing about Totem is that they provided many counselors for us throughout the day! At Totem we laugh, learn, have fun, and have an amazing environment! In P.E. we are introduced to so many new sports. We have a band, choir, art class, drum line, leadership, and so much more! Most of my friends that go to 10th street want to switch to Totem and a couple of them did! Mr.Kalahan is a awesome principle, he is so fun and strict when needed! I LOVE Totem and I can't even imagine going anywhere else!

I was very concerned that my daughter was going to attend Totem Middle school, so I entered her in the lottery for 10th St. Middle school. When she didn't make the list for the lottery at 10th St., we started to research and ask around a lot about Totem. We were very please with what we heard. Now she is half way through her first year at Totem and she loves it, I mean really loves the place and everything about it. She is in all Hi-Cap classes and band. The staff has really gone the extra mile to improved the atmosphere of learning and pushing the students to do their best. As a parent, I am very impressed when I go to the school for anything. I strongly recommend Totem to any parent that cares about their child's education!
