"Small town vibe with cultural events, college, and brew pub"

We chose to live in Portales to be near Eastern New Mexico University. After being here for several years, we are so glad we did. Many of our Air Force friends who live in Clovis always say they wished they had chosen a home in Portales.
While Portales is smaller than Clovis, the people are friendly, there's little to no traffic, there are more local restaurants (vs chain restaurants), the crime rate is lower, and there are always fun events being put on by the town or the college.
If you're being stationed at Cannon and want to live off base, Portales is a great choice!
