We have been attending this school for 5 years now, and overall, our experience has been mixed. The teachers have been good—not exceptional, but they are communicative and responsive, which I appreciate.

However, my main concern is with the administration and the overall school environment. There is a noticeable culture of gossip amongst parents and administrative staff, which I find unprofessional. While the school promotes values of kindness and respect, I have unfortunately witnessed instances of bullying and even physical fights ( my child recorded on his phone several times on the playground the last 2 years ). What’s more concerning is that these behaviors often go unchecked by staff, teachers, and even other parents.

I believe that a stronger emphasis on accountability, professionalism, and truly fostering a safe and inclusive environment would greatly improve the school community. I hope to see positive changes in the future.

Great school, a lot of military kids go here and there are a lot of activities done for them with them having a club and their own military counselor. The PTA does a lot of fundraising and activities for the school year room. They do carnivals for them bring in snow during the winter, bring food and more. Staff is friendly and helpful. Great teachers that show genuine interest for the students.

It’s a great school with caring teachers in my experience with the lower grades. Exception of limited help overall for kids that need additional support in the classroom like with ADHD/Autism.

We chose this school because we felt the alternative (Eastlake Middle) was not a good fit for our student. She has been attending the middle school there this year. There have been multiple incidents at school that the school has been tight lipped about and does not disclose to the parents that have been unsafe and inappropriate: fights, vaping, weapons brought on campus, verbal threats to students and teachers, and students participating in inappropriate behaviors in bathrooms during school hours. While these behaviors seem to get brushed under the rug, small inconsequential behaviors, like texting a parent between classes or chewing gum in class, get discipline warnings and threats about next steps that will be taken. The priorities of this school are so backward, and as a parent I get so frustrated by this. We will thankfully not be returning, and I would not recommend this school to others.

We've been here for years and it's gone downhill every since the last principal left. If you value your child's education (and your sanity) RUN! Red flag #1: whole front office turnover in the last year (front desk, AP, principal, school psychologist, etc). Red flag #2: Three different associate principals in 3 years. Red flag #3: almost all the good teachers have gone to other schools. What's left are the bottom feeders. Red flag #4: current "teachers" will NOT let parents volunteer in the classroom. You can request a "30 min observation" through the office.

I have had the same experience as previous reviews. Front office is a nightmare. I thought the old front desk lady was mean, well the new one is even worse. If anyone at the school is NOT doing their job and you start to question what's going on, they become rude and unbearable to deal with.

I know more families than I can count that are paying for private tutoring to compensate for lack of teaching. This school is so mismanaged and poorly run, they don't even have basic levels of organization or leadership... Let alone the capacity to hold teachers accountable.

If the other schools weren't full around me, I would have left already.

Administrative staff at the front desk is terrible. They are lazy, rude and every single interaction that I have had with them has been negative. They are incompetent and make up their own rules to get away with not doing their job. Do not expect to receive any assistance with them on anything, they will give you attitude even though they have no idea what they are talking about. We've had 2 of our children go to AV, while our daughter was lucky enough to get the handful of amazing teacher they have left there my son was not so lucky. He unfortunately was assigned to teachers who did not know their students or care enough for them to make sure they were meeting grade standards. We knew our son was falling behind and when we signed him up for tutoring they confirmed our concerns and informed us that he was 3 grades behind on where he should be in reading and math. We pulled him out of the school and now he is thriving in his new school that has a great administrative staff and teachers overall. Our daughter remains at AV middle school because while the administrative front desk is terrible the middle school teachers are wonderful. Hoping this new change in principal gets rid of the horrible teacher and front desk administrative staff or at least trains them to be better, this school would be amazing if it wasn't for the bad apples in the bunch.

Our daughter attended Arroyo Vista Charter School through 8th grade and we believe the staff there are the reason she built a solid educational foundation that has led to her achieving a 4.1 GPA. The best part about the school was the small class sizes for middle school. Because she attended elementary school there, she had a greater advantage being accepted for the middle school. Keeping her out of Eastlake Middle School was the best decision we made.

Arroyo Vista is a wonderful community. We have three children attending now and couldn’t be happier. Arroyo Vista has some of the hardest working dedicated teachers. Truly connect with their students and care for their well being. Over the years we have been able to have many pleasant experiences with both teachers and office staff! Any time there is a concern in regards to my children it is addressed immediately. We couldn’t be more thankful to be part of a community that truly focuses on our children.

Excellent school. My two children attended elementary here and one is currently attending middle school there. Despite some of the other negative reviews, we experienced or heard about issues with bullying. I assume multiple reviews may be from the same person/people. Teachers are great!

My daughter is in Kindergarten here and is having a great experience. The teachers are marvelous as are the families here. In both distance learning and in hybrid, she has learned so much in such a short amount of time.

This school quite honestly should be the last place you send your children. As most other posters said in regards to bullying. I have had the same experience. My son has been there for a year and a half. While he isn't "targeted" he still deals with bullying on an almost daily basis. He gets spit on, punched, kicked, threatened (he has had a sharpened pencil held up to his eye and the kid threatened to stab him), the list goes on... not by one student but many kids. I have actually watched one child hit 4 different children in a matter of one hour and NOT ONCE sent to the principles office. I'm not a psychologist but obviously these kids know they can do what they want with ZERO CONSEQUENCES.

Even last year a parent came to class and the teacher allowed him to sit with the students and he threatened 4 of them. The sub just sat there and did nothing and waited until the end of the day to notify the school.

The school keeps saying the same thing over and over and OVER when confronted about the safety of our kids with these problem childern: "every child has the right to an education." So if YOUR well behaved child deserves an education be prepared to deal with bullies daily.

I am comparing homework load with my friends children who attend other schools. It may seem a bit much and harder from when I was in elementary (late '80s) but it's about the standard nowadays.

Very positive this is our first year and as working parents it has been amazing seeing our first grader develop and learn as much as he has. I would like to see more availability for dual emergen none the less my son is very happy.

Our child is a 3rd grader at this school. The teachers at this school care about their students and I feel do a great job. On the other hand, my experience with the principal and the front office hasn't been great. Great Teachers! Poor Leadership!

Teachers seem to be lazy and more worried about their home life than their students and job. Supervision on the playground is minimal and bullying seems to be a problem. Forget talking to the principal about any issues because she will immediately side with the teacher. Parents seem to have clicks and if you want to be included in the planning of school functions you better be in one of the clicks or you will be left out. Also, if your child is ADD or ADHD and on medication you might want to keep that info to yourself because teachers will ask you if you've given you child their meds the second the child acts their age.

Do not be deceived by the great schools rating of a 9. Administration is horrible to deal with and God forbid you have to deal with them concerning a bullying issue. They have an amazing way of turning the bullying issue back onto your child. The principal is taking on children that would not otherwise be accepted at a non charter public school due to insane behavior problems. Her view is if they are smart than they are welcome. This is very dangerous. Trust me, very dangerous. I know first hand. Do not get caught up in the idea of charter school. It would benefit your child more to go to the assigned public school. This school will be the next reform school for soon to be criminals if she is not held accountable for who is allowed to be educated here. It is a joke!!

This is a great school! Kindergarten teacher Ms. Glickman is awesome! The principal is rude, doesn't care to listen to parents and the front office ladies are RUDE too! Huge PTA overall good school but needs a leader who will take the time to meet with a parent when requested!!!

AVCMS is a joke! The teachers are either incompetent or on their way out the door. Administration is not helpful and extremely rude. My child was bullied repeatedly and it was ignored by all authority figures. It's disgusting how the school chooses to play 'favorites' and basically ostracize everyone else. Unfortunately, the office staff reflects the leadership which is poor. On top of all of the social/emotional issues, the academic rigor is pretty much nonexistent!! If you want your child to be prepared for high school or accepted in to a decent college, do not choose this middle school- you will be extremely disappointed!!!

My child started at AVCS with great expectations. Unfortunately as parents we failed to listen to teachers / parents / classified employee's at the district level. My child was bullied through the grade levels and as parents we did what we could within the system. We finally requested a zone transfer which was denied, we ask why and were told by the district office the principal denied it. We then re-applied a couple of months later for a zone transfer and this time we did not mention bullying as a factor. It was approved and our child was happy and thank us. Principal rude on and off campus. Several times have encountered the principal off campus and she was rude to our child and my spouse. Teachers are afraid to be themselves. Race, age, and sexual orientation should not be reasons to be ashamed of, unfortunately there are several teachers and a classified that have to stay in the closet.

It's a great school, my daughter is in 7th I really like it, the only problem is that the Spanish class even the advance is too basic so is a waste of time for the children that are Spanish speaker.

I have 2 children at Arroyo Vista. The principle is very active which is one of the reasons we transferred to this school. We came from a school that had no leadership. The teachers we have had are great communicators and sensitive to the students needs.

Not sure yet about Arroyo! I have 2 daughters that went to Marshall and the staff was great. My little one starts K at Arroyo. The few times that I have been in the Arroyo office the staff made me feel uncomfortable. I will give the staff the benefit of the doubt and see how the year goes.

The teachers are wonderful! However the leadership is poor. They lack a bullying policy. High teacher turn-over. Every event not sponsored by PTA is unorganized. The principal/front office staff seem to be annoyed with her jobs. They seem to use it as an excuse for condescending and rude behavior towards parents. Note that not a single teacher has posted a review since 2006.

I can't say enough good things about AVCS! As a zone transfer, we have made the best decision for our children to move them to a school where the principal and teachers truly care about your child's success. We love the middle school so much! With a total population of 150 middle school students, it's like being at a FREE private school. It's a very tight knit community of families... I love Arroyo Vista Charter!

We've had such a positive experience for the past five years at AVCS. My child is enrolled in the dual immersion program and I am so impressed with the excellent academic environment. Teachers are friendly and professional and communicate frequently. Although the principal is strict, she has high standards, is a strong leader and holds regular informal meetings with parents so they can voice concerns. Heavy parental involvement and a strong sense of community at the school has made elementary school an enjoyable experience for our family.

Wonderful school. I've had a daughter go through every grade and my ten year old is moving to 5th grade. Both have been very happy with all of their teachers as have we the parents. There is a great deal of parent involvement and some great events all through the year. The principle Mrs Roth is very strict BUT fair and keeps a tight ship. Highly recomended

We just left this school due to a move. Academically they are a great school, lots of parent involvement is highly encouraged as well. However I was very concerned with the high teacher ratio. I noticed alot of favoritism from top leadership with teachers. My biggest concern is the lack of an effective school bully policy. They hung my son out amongst his peers for reporting being bullied. I dont understand what the teachers, noon duties are doing at recess because obviously they are not watching the children.When it is reported if that child doing the bulling is a well known child due to his parent working at the school either on staff or volunteer, they are allowed to get away with the unexcusable behavior. Academically the school is good, teachers are great. However I have seen great teachers let go because they were not a favorite with the principal.
