While there are dedicated teachers in Sage Canyon, the overall environment of the school does not always feel safe or nurturing. Physical fights and bullying are constant, and the principal often dismisses it as nothing more than "rough play."
Even worse, there are clear double standards. Some families seem to get special treatment, while their children's harmful behavior is overlooked. Meanwhile, many parents--especially those from minority backgrounds--see their concerns brushed aside. This lack of accountability has created a culture where bullying thrives instead of being addressed. It's troubling that by sixth grade, some students still struggle with basic reading and writing, yet they've already mastered bullying and hurting other students.
Sage Canyon desperately needs stronger leadership, real accountability, and a genuine commitment to student safety.

It was nice school in nice location, and most people are very happy. If you are Asian with immature kids, I would personally nor recommend this school. Other schools in DMUSD, like Oeacn Air a few blocks away doesn't have such problem, probably because there are a lot more Asian kids over there.
Even if you want to go to private schools, you are blocked for 2 years due to negative comments in report card. You don't even have a chance to get MAP test or interview. Only option is to moving out so that you can go to other school.

There is daily homework packet but too easy and not very interactive.

Had for teachers so far (K to 3rd). First 2 were great but recent 2 were not so good, especially outside academical area. Based on my experience and observation, they are nice to white, Americans but not so nice to Asian immigrants. Very little tolerance to Asian kids for anything, I felt like.

More mature and sneaky kids can easily avoid problems while immature and naive kids will suffer from any mistake. Very high expectation for very young kids.

Similar to above. Very little tolerance to Asian kids for anything, I felt like, based one multiple direct interaction with principal and vice principal.

It was reasonable. Kids with different level of progress had opportunity to have different assignments and projects.

This is why we are extremely unhappy. There are very smart bullies who irritated my kid in very private set up and whenever my kid reacted, it was immediately reported to principal or vice pricipal by the bully, and my son is the certified bully per report cards for last 2 years. Teachers mostly haven't seen what has happened and only have seen my son's reaction. Somehow, coincidentally, bullies are all white Americans and my son and other trouble makers are all Asians. I hope it's not related, but I have a strong feeling it could be related even if I know I will never able to prove it.

I am amending my review below from 3 to 5 stars (avg of 4/5) as there has been improvement these past couple months in both the demeanor and approach of the front office and the principal appears to be making adjustments in her approach. She also satisfactorily addressed a bullying issue. Hopefully the positive changes will persist and lead to a more relaxed, kind and happier environment in the school.

We have been very pleased with our experience thus far. We have a 1st and 3rd grader (one girl, one boy). They are having very different but both wonderful experiences at Sage Canyon. We love the school and feel greatful we landed here.

The curriculum does give homework but it is minimal. However, the teachers do cater to the desires of those parents wanting more homework and I feel go out of their way to ensure your child's success. If you want your kids to get more they ensure that will happen. However, if you want your kids to have time to play and participate in lots of other activities outside of school, you will certainly have that with the standard homework program.

Overall we have had a positive experience. There is at least one tenured teacher at Sage who has moved schools within the district, then moved grades within Sage and unfortunately remains at our school as a 2nd grade teacher. The school and district know she is a problem but seem unwilling to actually do anything about it. Other than that, we have had wonderful teachers for both our kids.

These types of values are instilled in the kids on a daily basis in many different ways.

I've had 3 children attend here. If your child is an achiever you probably won't have any problems. Money helps, too. I encountered cold teachers, particularly in kindergarten and first grade, believe it or not. Bullying, lying from other kids to expressly get my daughter in trouble. It seemed to get meaner as the years went by. High pressure, excessive homework, and a huge culture of entitlement by parents and kids alike. Stressful, even in kindergarten.

My older son attended the Kindergarten last year. I was amazed with his improvement throughout the year. His teacher was outstanding and helped him by challenging and nurturing him in a balanced way. The office staff and after school programs are amazing too. We can't wait for the first grade to start. We love Sage Canyon.
