Very disappointing experience with this school. Important paperwork submitted to the office was lost, and the response felt dismissive with very little accountability or effort to help resolve what happened.

I was also disturbed to hear that an Asian student was told by another student that Asians eat dogs. Concerns like these should be taken seriously.

If your child is going to attend AOMS, please consider having them take Orchestra. Signing up as a 6th grader was the single best decision that my daughter made during her middle school experience. To be honest, I was not always impressed with her other classes and teachers. Without Orchestra I might have been frustrated with her AOMS experience. I answered the previous questions in relation to Orchestra.

Mrs. Hall is the best teacher at AOMS. She focuses on helping students learn how to learn, to benefit from mistakes, to set goals and attain them, and pours her heart into making sure that her kids have the best experience possible. She is a skilled and accomplished musician who still plays professionally and who is a product of our schools - her mother was the Carlsbad High drama teacher for over 30 years and still helps out at concerts. Mrs. Hall created a supportive and nurturing atmosphere which allowed students to take risks and to grow.

Additionally, my daughter has been surrounded by kids who want to learn, who are fun, nonjudgmental, and she formed friendships that endured all 3 years. She did not have to navigate the ugliness that is often a part of middle school because her peers were solid.

I didn't realize how important the elective she chose would be and I'm grateful that she ended up in Orchestra.

I honestly struggle to think of what the school does well. My daughter attended Poinsettia Elementary and we were quite pleased. All the teachers had personal relationships with their students and the principal knew everybody. The transition to middle school was night and day. The only students the teacher knows are the troublemakers and the same applies for the Principal. And unfortunately, there are plenty of troublemakers since either the teachers have given up on disciplining the students or the state of California no longer lets them discipline. Whatever the reason, the classrooms are ridiculously chaotic with kids constantly talking back to teachers. Its not uncommon for kids to be speaking to each other and disrupting class while others are taking a test. The use of AI is so prolific that Kids will use it while taking an open laptop test, and the teacher makes almost no attempt to stop them. I cant blame the teachers since I dont know whats going on and why its happening, but I can tell you that the system is broken and usually when its this broken, the problem lies at the top. I think that this school is pretty good overall if you live in the area. Although classes and teachers can be difficult sometimes, its easy if you are ok top of your grades and doing well. PE can be unfair at times to certain students, not giving you a pass if you cant run or if you dont have a doctors note. (So if you have a broken leg w/out a doctors note, you still gotta run) The people there can be nice if you find ones with similar interests as you. Some of the teachers can be really nice, but also really mean, depending on your personality or attitude in the class. Advanced classes are difficult as well, so make sure to ask for help. The counselors will do anything in their power to help, however, they might not always say or give you the advice you want to hear. In general, no, this isnt the best middle school out there. But, its pretty good, even though it can be unfair sometimes.

AOMS is the absolute worst school ever, one of my teachers called me special needs cause I couldn't figure out one question, the teachers have terrible attitudes and they get short tempered with everyone they are mean and don't care about studenst I switched schools becuause I couldnt handle that enviroment

This school was the worst school I've been to! I do not recommend going to this school, if you're thinking of sending your child here, don't! The teachers are mean (well at least most of them) the school lunches are horrible, and the students are musty! 0/10 I do not recommend

I'm a student at AOM, and I have mixed feelings about it. I'm very active politically, and am a conservative on all issues, economic and social. While staff is usually kind, except for one PE teacher who genuinely terrifies me, the student body is horrible. Since this is California, I should expect this, but I am constantly receiving taunts and crude jokes due to me just wearing a patriotic shirt. I try to ignore it, but the mockery keeps coming and gained depression as a result. The counselor, while polite and kind, just aren't approachable due to my beliefs, and I usually end up having to debate someone every other day. Ms. Flowers, our former principal, was kind and strict, and I'm greatly disappointed by the fact that she left, because she kept law and order. The dress code, while mostly great, has a few flaws that I do think violate my First Amendment rights for freedom of expression, and isn't enforced by teachers that much either. I can only hope next year will be better.

This school is not good. The staff members are absolutely absurd. Im a transgender student attending this school and have faced multiple discrimination from the staff. The principal has misgendered me constantly, though Ive been in her office about my identity multiple times. I have also seeked help for the bullying I was experiencing, completely being turned down. It was excused and it was my fault because I was triggering them, despite the proof I gave in office. Not to mention, theres this really bad staff assistant for children with disabilities. In class, I observed a full argument breakout between the assistant and student with special needs. This assistant holds an IEP as well, which she has turned down to help students MULTIPLE times. There has been a personal situation regarding a teacher who has received mental health treatment and support, but he forgot to take his medication one day and the students thought it would be funny to joke about it in front of staff members. Which, the staff members did NOTHING about. If you go to AOMS in 2023 you will know what Im talking about. The rules are just ridiculous as well. If you dont bring your PE clothes twice within a semester, its a phone call home? I mean come on now. What do they expect parents to even do? What if we cant buy that many clothes? Its a simple mistake to forget a pair of clothes for a PE class in middle school. It isnt the end of the world. Not to mention, a male PE teacher walked into the girls locker room. As well as ignored my email about my health and condition. Our miles and pacers are still the factors that bring our grade down intensely, which is INSANE. This is the worst school I have been to because of staff and the support I get there. The education is fine, I get a lot in and Im proud of it. However, the support REALLY sucks. The teachers are great, but the staff members are ballistic and annoying. Ever since Ms. Berry has came, its been slightly better and she made this school brighter. Rose Flowers is not the best principal at all and corrupts us as students. I am not proud to say I go to this school and I dread walking through the gates every single day. I tell my mother in the morning I cant wait to leave this school. I even have a countdown calendar until I attend high school. This school is unaccepting and terrible. I do not recommend unless you want to be tormented.

Not welcoming to new students, moved into this district and had a horrible experience, horrible, I can't even explain how awful our experience was in words. Our child has an IEP and the school didn't give the accommodations he needed that were listed on his IEP. Bullying seems to be a huge problem our child was bullied immediately on arrival to the school! Thankfully we transferred to Calavera hills MS and our child is thriving, I can't say enough good things about Calavera Hills MS.

I have mixed feeling, as I see the leadership can sometimes just be not much beyond No, Dont do that and bullying can be very common among students which is not something I want in my school. Homework more depends on the teacher more than the school, So I cant blame the school. Finally the diversity is very high and morale is high and I think is very acceptable, Over all, Like all kids I dont want to go to school, but this place is ok at some times but can be unfair at others, but this school has room to go. 3 Stars.

Everytime I walk through the gates into the school I pray to god that today will go by quicker. Ive never seen a more horrid place of learning. Although some teachers are very nice and provide great support with a lot of stuff but it is out weighed by the horrendous teachers there. If there was a servey tooken at the end of the year given out by the Carlsbad unified district about the school it would be shut down instantly. Teachers act like they own the place and just threaten the kids by sending them to detention or to talk with the vice principal. What a joke of humanity I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this place you call school.

Yes, this is not the quality school you think you'd get in a gorgeous place like Carlsbad. There doesn't appear to be any accountability for bad behavior from students towards teachers and subs. The principal is very rude and unpleasant. I would not want my child to go to this school. New administration would help immensely. Public schools can be a free for all for bad behavior, which is why I'm seeing many parents sending their kids to charter or private schools now. Very sad.

The leadership at this school is horrible! They have been through 3 principals in the last 4 years and Flowers is the worst one yet. We can't wait for middle school to be over and to transfer to Sage Creek where there is actually consistent and kind leadership.

my son is 2nd year. 1st year ok this year rate zero he has experienced racial issues with no support from administration, they are insensitive to racism in their school, they try to cover it up and make those impacted feel shame or its their fault.

WAY TO MUCH HOMEWORK! As a parent of 3 children who have attended AOMS (2 currently) I have experienced the excessive amount of homework. International and national studies have concluded the detriment of this and lack of correlation with academic achievement. My children do very well academically. However, it is very sad to see the RIDICULOUS amount of stress they endure due to excessive nightly homework. Its wrong and its frustrating as a parent.

Have burned through Principals. Me. Brocket was promising but now gone. New Principal does not relate to the students at all. Instead rules by incessantly blowing a whistle at children and then following that with screaming. Not exactly ideal to say the least. She seems to focus on the easy things like dress coding girls rather then address the very real issues this school has - BULLYING

ALL three of my children have dealt with REALLY bad situations at this school. The administration is indifferent to this problem and seem to think that once a year assemblys or slogans will be enough. Their focus is wasted on policing the students looking to pick on very minor things or dress coding instead of dealing with bullying in a way that is intelligent and collaborative with student body

I have been bullied several times since I've been at this school. We can do many things to help our school become better but no one has done anything about. I want to be homeschooled because of these problems that aren't being solved.

My son was bullied and beat up several times at this school. The administration reaction was sadly inadequate. They even delayed calling me to let me know my son was hurt and he needed immediate medical attention. I would not recommend this school to anyone.

We moved into the district last year and had a child in the middle school. She experienced the worst bullying I have seen -- cyber bullying, physical bullying, kids chanted mean names to her in class, boys cornered her and threatened to beat her up, her picture was crossed out of the yearbook, and kids threw trash at her. We met with B. Brockett three times, each time he said it was the parenting and she was just attracted to drama. She even received text messages during school from other students telling her to kill herself. B. Brockett was shown these messages. This is a terrible place for a pre-teen who is trying to build confidence and find her path. B. Brockett seems to simply not care about the students. My daughter will have a long road to undo the pain she experienced. DO NOT send your child here. Even when you walk into the office area, the staff acts like you are intruding and do not welcome you as a parent.

I liked a couple of the teachers. But, I think overall they are unhappy and just going through the motions. There simply is no true care for the students. One teach told his entire class that they will never succeed in life. What?!

We went to AOMS with our concerns while the time Mr. Brockett was off campus for his professional learning conference. We met with Mr. Nelson who is very gentle and a kind person. We addressed our concerns about one of my son's teacher who showed both poor teaching and communication skills and gave unusual progress score by her favoritism. We also there to mentioned an incident between another student and my son.
I really want to thank Mr. Nelson for his professionalism and effectiveness. Mr. Nelson took the matter very seriously and respected me and my son. He listened to my concerns without any judgment, and was quick to find the root of the problem and resolved the issue.
We are very happy that my son had a new teacher starts on next school day.

I also met with Mr. Brockett when he was able. I can said, they both are great, I really appreciate how they handled the matter because they listened to both sides of the stories without being particularly partial to one side or another. They genuinely cared about all the students in the school. They are actions really dissolved my worries and I just want to say again how much I appreciate their capable leadership.

I've met with the Principal, Mr. Bryan Brockett, to discuss Aviara Oaks Middle School's policy toward bullying. Unlike the previous reviewer who blames the parents for bullying, I see a larger picture. Not every parent is adept at parenting and at instilling compassion, character and decency in their children. And no matter how wonderful a parent may be---a family has other members to contend with. Some families have parents just struggling to keep their marriage afloat, parents who may be dealing with serious issues amongst their children, parents who may be working full time time to provide for their family.

Let's face it: no matter how great parents might be, our kids spend the bulk of their time at school. I am convinced this school has an effective manifold system to address bullying---for the victim and the perpetrators as well.

Not a great school. Another new Principal but will take years to clear out the mess they have in there. It's been a mess for the last 8 years. Strong parent home influence which is most of the reason kids do well. Can't give much credit to the teachers at this school.
I would not recommend this school if you are looking for a good academic middle school. Calavera or Valley are getting the better reviews from parents whose kids go there. Can't say the same about Aviara Middle School.

We have had two A students go through this school and with the exception of a mere handful of teachers have found it's high 8 ratings laughable. The students themselves are what makes this school exceptional. Yes, we have great test scores because we have many children that are exceptionally bright. There are countless teachers at this school that literally can't stand teaching their classes and lack patience. They rush through content or just don't teach at all. I understand that teaching middle school students with their hormones and their juvenile behavior is difficult but why did you become a teacher in the first place? If you can't answer that question with an answer that does not involve financial stability than you are doing our students no favors. Kids want to learn, they just need teachers that still love and want to teach. As for the administrators, blah! If you can afford to, we could not, skip this school and get your kids a private education. Carlsbad High School is no better. Many kids leaving to be home schooled or attend other private schools. Carlsbad just refuses to get with the times, stop their nepotism hiring ways, and make some GREAT changes!

School refuses to hire teachers. My son has had 5 English teachers and 14 Social Studies teachers in the same year. Needless to say, he has not been able to have a stable environment to learn. On top of that, the administration and staff conduct themselves more as bullies, intimidating the children rather than caring about the children's educational needs. The front office secretary Laura is hostile toward not only the parents and will openly fight with then in front of the students but is also rude to the children. By the second year many of us are fleeing to other alternative schools such as privates.

I'm a second year student at aoms and just moved from Italy. The teachers are so supportive and can't wait to help you with everything. I think this is the best school in carlsbad because there are no issues between students and the electives are very advanced(only school in carlsbad to have photography). Teachers are all experienced.

This is my child's first year at AOMS. First I would like to say that, while I am stunned by the bullying that goes on at this school (sadly, pretty much on a daily basis), I happen to also be really impressed by the schools new principal and vp because they really do care and do take (for the most part) appropriate action when deemed necessary - but they can only do so much. The teachers my child got this year are amazing, as well, my child is doing very well academically speaking. Why 3 Stars then? For the bullying. It really is a HUGE problem and something (ahem...parents, you need to do a better job teaching your children that bullying is NOT OK), needs to be done about it. I believe it is ultimately the parents responsibility to see to it their children behave in a manner deemed appropriate at school. It is NOT the principals/vp's/teachers responsibility. It is not the responsibility of the kids being picked on by your kids, either. It is NOT OK. I give 5 Stars to the principal/vp and teachers at AOMS. To the parents of children with behavioral issues that won't get their children the help they clearly need and deserve, I give a negative 1 Star. Shame on you.

This is my daughter's first year at AOMS, coming from a very high standard, Pacific Rim Elementary. The new principal is excellent, as well as the teachers!! My daughter is held accountable, her learning has excelled and the bullying is non-existent. I was concerned before she started because of prior opinions I had heard, but, apparently, significant changes were made prior to the start of this school year, and I couldn't be happier with AOMS. Mr. Brockett, the new principal, is wonderful and his goal is clearly to uphold the highest standards and provide a healthy education and environment for the students and parents. I'm thankful my daughter can attend this school. CB

I am pulling my child out of this school. Two years is enough. There are some great teachers here, but they are few and far between. NO motivation for excellence. The leadership in the school is typical of what I have found in Carlsbad. Everyone punches a clock, does their time. Nothing extra.

Two stars because my son is still there and if it were zero, what kind of parent would i be to leave him there? We have had a very terrible experience to date with most of the teachers with the exception of Band and Social Studies. Rotating administration, bullying, tenured teachers that just assign work with no follow through or compassion. Too bad the options for private school are minimal in the area.

My son just finished his 1st year at AOMS and overall it's been great. The teachers are great and very dedicated. Some of the staff are rude and hard to deal with but all around it's a good school with high standards and high parent participation.
