Literacy First is a school where kids are known, teachers are valued, and parents are appreciated. I have two children that went through Literacy First Charters schools. Both have completed college and are doing well for themselves. My daughter is completing her teaching credential because of her teachers' impact on her life. Literacy teaches values, character, and leadership. I am grateful for all the wonderful people I have met and worked with.
Thank you for caring for and supporting our children.

I review Literacy First from the perspective of a teacher. While the school has great ideas and aims to provide some of the highest-quality education, I found the reality really fell short of expectations. There is an extremely high turnover rate for teachers. Most of the teachers care very deeply about their students, however many feel overworked and overwhelmed. During the 2021-22 school year, many (8-12) teachers quit mid-year due to the stress and miserable work environment. With the severe staff shortage, students are regularly missing out on mandated and required resources such as SPED, instructional support, art, library, and PE. A significant portion of the student population experience major behavior challenges, which make the medium-large class sizes very difficult to manage.

Classwork was rigorous, but uninteresting and a challenge for most students. Many fell behind quickly and struggle to catch up. Much of the work was above the ability level of the class and teachers lacked any freedom to deviate from the prescribed grade-level curriculum. Much of the work was not meaningful or engaging for the students. The classroom environment was stressful.

I think this school has good aims and potential, but it fails to execute their plans, fails to support the teachers, and fails to provide students with the supports they need. I would not send my own children here.

Most schools I have taught at as a substitute have turned towards a "no homework" approach. I have a Kindergartener and a 2nd grader. My kinder has a homework packet to complete throughout the week. My 2nd grader doesn't have anything on a weekly basis, just special projects from time to time.

Posted: November 12, 2019

The teachers are amazing! If the board doesn't feel that a teacher is performing to the highest standard, something will be done about it.

Posted: November 12, 2019

This is one of the best things about LFCS. Each month they focus on a different character trait that they build into their lessons in the classroom. My son came home in kindergarten talking about showing "grit" when completing tasks. That is not a normal work a 6 year old knows.

Posted: November 12, 2019

The leadership at the school is great. Everyone is passionate about our students education both in character traits and academically.

Having taught in public schools for over 7 years, I knew that this is where I wanted my kids to go. I drive from Lemon Grove to take my kids to school every day. I would drive even further if need for them to attend LFCS. We LOVE LFCS and are so honored to be a part of this school.

Our three kids have attended Literacy First for the last 8 1/2 years. I cannot praise the educators highly enough. The teachers are invested in the students, committed to each one as an individual whether they are accelerated, high achievers or need special assistance or encouragement. They have provided opportunities for our kids to excel in areas they are most interested in. (For instance, one child loves teaching and her teachers have provided her chances to lead small groups or work with fellow students to provide additional instruction.) At LFCS, the whole child is considered and the development of who they are is equally as important what they know. Needless to say, we have been highly impressed with their level of dedication.

The administration and staff are equally committed to delivering the best public education experience for each student. They work hard to know the students personally. They are devoted to creating a space where students can thrive. That being said, some of the campuses are on less than ideal properties. Facilities is a major issue for charter schools as they receive less state money for such needs than traditional public schools. They are well aware of the issues and are constantly on the lookout for ways to improve this.

A large portion of the parents are very involved with the school, contributing volunteer hours that are the equivalent of several more full-time employees. This investment from the parents creates a real sense of community and - dare I say - family even.

There is a large population of English-learners but LFCS has a track record of providing the additional instruction for these students and they are moved more quickly from that classification than similarly situated schools in our area. I have found the families of these students to be greatly appreciative of the opportunities presented both at the school and in the US. LFCS has an emphasis on American history. Talking with foreign born parents at events like the Thanksgiving feasts, Veteran's Day parades, etc. throughout the years about the lack of freedoms from whence they came and those we have here has provided me the chance to see all we have through new eyes with renewed appreciation and gratitude.

We will be forever grateful for the educational foundation our children are receiving at LFCS.

My two sons (6th and 8th) have been going to LFCS since Kindergarten and I am so thankful for this school and the hardworking staff.

My youngest son is such a strong reader, writer, and mathematician and loves school. He is a natural learner and teachers have challenged him and embraced his fun personality year after year. Watching him excel in math compared to students across our state gives me such hope for his career options.

My oldest son does not learn as easily and teachers have adapted to his needs each year. He has grown into a student with many academic strengths after struggling for many years. I am so grateful for the well mannered group of friends he has and look forward to seeing how they mature as they go to high school together.

I began teaching at LFCS when my oldest son was in 2nd grade and am so thankful for the positive staff climate, the desire to constantly reflect and improve teaching practices, and the parent involvement. I taught in 3 different traditional public school districts prior to working at LFCS and this experience gives me a constant backdrop for what LFCS offers.

This school is one of a kind. It is so much more than high test scores and smiling photos-kids are loved and given skills for life.

This is our second year and we love our school! Great communication between the parents and staff. Lots of opportunities for parents to come and be apart of their child's day. Overall we couldn't have picked a better school for our daughter's education!! Very pleased and always recommending!!

Literacy First teachers care for you child even while expecting academic excellence for all students. They have a wonderful extended year/day schedule that allows for lots of breaks in between the rigorous academics as well as special events. They use the latest in teaching techniques including, music, movement, memorization, activities, special projects and more. I highly recommend the elementary school for a solid character based education. They require all parents to volunteer 40 hours per year which enables the school to do more with less money.

LFCS is an amazing school. The teachers and staff really care about the students and want them to succeed. They follow a "learn through experience" philosophy, and in kindergarten my son learned so many things without realizing he was even learning. He was having so much fun! We are blessed that our son got a spot in this school, and I am thankful that he is getting such a wonderful education.

We have been a part of LFCS for three years now, and beyond words that can express, been completely in awe of our school. Staff, teachers, principal, vice principal, all support staff have always put the kids first and paid attention to details that prepare our kids for the world outside. The teachers are the best in our nation!

Awesome - great job. Very caring staff. Attention to what kind of character the next generation will have. Not teaching the me first mentality.

Wow, really? Great staff? I have notice how rude and negative some have been towards the children. Yes, even yelling. When you complain to the office nothing gets done and it always ends up being your childs fault. I guess that teaches our kids good self- estem.

Posted: May 17, 2010

My daughters grades have soared and the small class sizes are great. We love the teachers and how they genuinely care for the students.

Posted: May 4, 2010

the school has wonderful teachers and they have a hands on approach to learning

Posted: May 4, 2010

I love this school for several reasons. The teachers genuinely care about our kids and help them to succeed. If a child does need extra help, they get it through on campus tutoring or one on one with the teacher. The class sizes are small with only 20 kids per class in the Primary Academy and 25 kids per class in the Junior Academy. Parent involvement is not only appreciated, but encouraged.

Posted: May 3, 2010

This is the most amazing school - guaranteed small class size, teachers who care, proven curriculum, and involved parents. What more could anyone ask for?

Posted: May 3, 2010

my son's test scores are off the hook--my daughter starts next year as well. Small classes, great teachers who care & challenge the students.

Posted: May 2, 2010

I love how much the teachers care for our children

Posted: May 2, 2010

I love the small-school feel of Literacy First. I feel my child is safe there, not thrown in with 2,000 other kids. The teachers really care about the children as individuals. They are not just a grade, seat or number in a book.

Posted: May 2, 2010

This school is like an extended family. Parents and teachers involved for the well-being of each child's development. We couldn't have picked a better school for our son. He wants to go to school every day and learn!

The dedication from the staff to the parents is what makes this school ' A special place to learn'. Very well rounded. Our kids are in a safe environment, and it is to their advantage, the small class size, uniforms, disciplinary enforcement. Our children will be great adults someday, and this is the foundation.

Posted: April 22, 2010

Not only does LFCS provide the high level of education, the teachers go above and beyond to teach moral character. The high test scores reflect the academics... the behavior and attitude of the students reflect the character teaching and love from their teachers! Combining the two results in success!!

Posted: April 22, 2010

Great principals, teacher & staff, and kids LOVE to learn here!

Posted: April 22, 2010

Literacy First Charter School gives all students the opportunity to receive the highest level of education without the cost of sending your student to a high end private school. By 8th grade graduation most Literacy students exhibit speaking and presentation skills at a level I see in my high end marketing and technical sales position. Literacy staff care about their students and give their absolute best to ensure each student is more than ready for the next level. There is a reason for the limited enrollment space available every year.

Posted: April 22, 2010

Great school. They really care about my kids and make sure that character counts.

Posted: April 22, 2010

LFCS is a first rate school. My children attended other schools prior to LFCS and did not gain the knowledge, experience, and character that LFCS provides. The 20-1 ratio is just the right atmosphere for learning. We, as parents, are required and very fortunate to be ALLOWED to be involved in our Children's education. Thank you LFCS for all that you do!

Posted: April 22, 2010

Posted: April 22, 2010

I love the positive attitude of the teachers and their focus on teaching the children how to think, not what to think.

Posted: April 21, 2010

I have a degree in Liberal Studies and for many of my classes I had to observe several different schools. Literacy First really stuck out ot me becasue of the excellent teachers. They truly care and are committed to the students. All around it is a fabulous school!

Excellent staff that really care about students. Focused curriculum prepares students for college, life, and being good citizens.

My son have been enrolled in this school since Kindergarten, and that was the first year the school opened, he is in the 8th grade now, what I love about the school is that all students are safe and known, the academic are so high and the teachers are so invested in their students' education, I see my son teaching math to his relatives that are a grade or two higher than him, I am so grateful for this school, it builds character and academics at the same timel.

My children love this school. My son has an autism spectrum disorder and we were able to mainstream him in with typically developing children rather than have him attend a specialized class at a public school, and his progress is phenomenal! My son and daughter love their teachers and are so far ahead of their peers who attend other schools.

the teachers and staff are wonderful! great place for the kids to grow and learn!!

Posted: April 20, 2010

I love that the teachers care about there students. They go out of there way to find a way to teach your child if they learn on a different level then the rest of the kids. They set high academic standards in a way that kids want to achieve it. They don't have all the chaos that goes on in the public school system.

I have 3 children that attend this school and have been very happy with the teaching staff. They are really dedicated to the students and seem to really love to teach. It's not often that you find that in every teacher at a school. Also, my kids love school and love learning.

I have six children total and have seen several different schools. Literacy teachers are attentive to the needs of the children. They keep open communication with parents and truly want to see your child to succeed. Even my older children see high level of performance from their little sisters and are happy they will have an educational opportunity they feel they did not experience.

Through state of the art technology and experienced teachers, students receive a quality and literacy focused education. Well thought-out vacation times, modified school year, 185 days in school (vs.180) Several field trips each year. - My grandchildren have teachers who thoroughly involve their parents in their education. This guarantees that they will actually get an education. Without parental involvement, kids do not learn very well. It is a wonderful school.

Charter Schools are the best and Literacy Charter is right at the top!

Posted: April 19, 2010

Literacy is hands down the best school I've found, and I've even researched private schools. I'm not sure if it's the size of the school or simply the amazing teachers and staff, but everyone there knows all the kids by name. It is such a wonderful feeling to know that your child isn't simply a number and another face in the crowd. I love knowing that my children are seen, known, respected and cared for when their not at home with me. In addition to the amazing environment, the school thrives academically. Look at their test scores! Plus eveything they do is evidence based. I can't express how gratful I am to all the wonderful teachers and staff that teach and care for my little ones day in and day out. Literacy First is truly one of the reasons we've remained in California this long, and if we do move I'll be extremely sad to leave such an amazing school.

Posted: April 19, 2010

Literacy has great class sizes and teachers that really enjoy their jobs, as well as a lot of parent involvement. All of this combined gives my daughter a quality education that I am so very thankful for.
