This is our 3rd year at EBS. Like many people who moved to this area specifically looking at the school rating we had high expectations and for the most part they've been met. Overall there is a very strong culture of achievement at the school and that's reflected in the high test scores. A lot of that just stems directly from the demographics of the local area - many many parents with advanced degrees and professional credentials who value educations and expect their kids to too. However at the same time we've been thankful that there isn't any too much of a 'pressure cooker' sort of atmosphere and being overly competitive at this age is frowned upon. There are a lot of fun in-school and after school activities led by the parents group (AFP) but sometimes they struggle to get volunteers due to families being busy. I have no idea about the earlier comments around bullying - most of our kids teachers have been very on top of their classes' behavior and Principal Sloan runs a tight ship overall. Some of the class sizes can get larger so it helps that the vast majority of kids come to school with the right attitude from home.

This is our third year at EBS and are completely happy with the support and kindness that we have received. We have a kid on the autism spectrum and we have been so amazed by the supports he receives from his teachers, para educators, and therapists. Many of the parents are very involved and create a welcoming environment for everyone.
I also appreciate that I am welcomed into the school by the staff and teachers and have always received positive responses when we have questions or concerns.

My child attended this school since we live in the area and for the good grading system. However, once my child was enrolled in the program, she experienced bully and discrimination from her teacher and other classmates. We brought it up to the school principal with multiple incidents and photos showing the bite mark on her arm, bruises resulting from other classmates' bully but the school principal has never done anything about it. My child's teacher is setting up the case to blame my child for her aggressive behavior and her tendency of bullying others of which she was the one that got bullied in class and by the teacher. It got to the point that we had to withdraw our child out of the school with no advanced notice since our daughter started to lack interest of learning and waking up every morning refusing going to class. We reported a case to the board of education in San Diego Unified school district about EBS school and the particular teacher who bully our child.

We would DEFEFINITELY NOT recommend this school to any of our friends or families. Our child is now enrolled at the much safer and better school but she still has PTSD of this EBS school from time to time. If you are one of the sincere parents who care about your child safety and mental well being, please do NOT enroll your child to this school.

The good side – this is our 3rd year at EBS. The best thing about EBS is the diversity and mix of families. There are many Asian, South Asian, and Caucasian families including military families and parents in hi-tech. So your child has a good chance of fitting in. The high test scores reflect the neighborhood and high-achieving famil rather than anything specific done at the school.

The bad side – class sizes are large, up to 30 kids. Parent-teacher conferences have been consistently disappointing with multiple teachers giving us generic feedback. Even when you ask how you can help your child improve in some areas, you don’t seem to get an answer (‘your child is doing fine’). Approaching administrators is the same – even highly involved parents are treated like a bother and it’s difficult to get straight answers. The afterschool classes are haphazard quality and expensive for what you get.

EBS is an excellent school! They have dedicated teachers, high academic standards, technology integration, enrichment programs, strong parent involvement, and a principal (Sloan) who is very proactive. My children are thriving at this school! Thank you to the principal and the faculty for making this school great!

My children have been attending EBS for the past 4 years, and I am very disappointed with the school. Despite our long-standing involvement and support for the school, we were met with a lack of assistance when we needed it most.
One of my children had a negative experience with a teacher, which led to a hostile school environment and caused him to lose interest in learning. When we addressed the issue, the teacher responded disrespectfully to us as parents. This experience has only compounded our disappointment with the school.
Given our history with EBS and the support we've provided, we hoped for a more empathetic approach, at least. It is disheartening to see our experience with the school decline over the years.

They don't deserve a great facility and 1 star. I would give zero star if possible. I felt racism and discrimination on my son's bullying issues with this school. The teacher and principal made my son a liar. That was such an unbelievable treat for my sweet son. We had to transfer him to Dingeman Elementary School. Everything is great at new school.

We moved here two years ago and have been thrilled with EBS. Both of our kids really like the school, all the teachers have been great, the Vice Principal is fabulous, the campus is really nice, and we love that the kids have access to choir, orchestra, and band plus a fine arts program. Our son is Autistic and the support from the staff for him has been great, including the Vice Principal, Special Ed staff, OT, and Speech Therapist. He has made a lot of progress despite all of his struggles. He is also very tiny for his age and has never been picked on there. The parents are also very involved.

I totally disagree with the previous comment about EBS. The API is high because of the outstanding teachers, principal(Ms. Sloan), vice principal, and parents who are highly involved. How possibly and elementary school student can have repeated courses, they are not high schoolers !!! I have 2 children in this school, and I don't think they have too many found raising programs. I used to send my kids to Poway school district and I was awfully overwhelmed with found raising events without seeing any result. 2 years ago I could finally sign up my kids in EBS, and what a good decision it was!!! My kids are way happier and thank me every day that they do not even want to remember those scary memories of their old Poway district school. Anyway, what I like about EBS is their extra curriculum programs like science nights, run clubs, music choir, music classes since kindergarten (band or orchestra instrument classes from 4th grade) art educations, computer lab and high tech classes in beautiful new buildings (EBS is the newest school in neighborhood). Parent involvement is so strong here and thanks to high average income of parents, we do not see any shortage of anything in this school

The API scores are high because the majority of the children have been "redshirted" or have repeated courses. Perhaps if the school/teaching staff spent more quality time with the kids instead of constant fund raising events, the scores may be able to speak for themselves in a more fair and honest way. The staff complain (constantly) that they don't have time to devote teaching to the "individual student" due to budget constraints but this school isn't adversely impacted at all...they are fully funded by the surrounding community with top of the line computer lab and art program. Be prepared to home school your child/children if they attend at EBS.

I rated this school 4 stars because my experience has been dependent upon the kind of teacher my daughter has had. Our Kindergarten, first grade, and third grade teachers have been outstanding. Parent involvement is extremely high, and the school's fundraising activities and results are strong. The school is successful due to the outstanding AFP (PTA) board, the principal, and specific teachers who contribute to the highest quality of education.
