My experience with Westview High School has been extremely disappointing. I have been surprised by the lack of school spirit, student recognition, and overall sense of community compared with other schools in the same district.
What stands out most is the athletic department. Student-athletes dedicate countless hours to training, competing, and representing the school, yet recognition and support often feel inadequate. Accomplishments that would be celebrated at other schools are largely overlooked at WV. As a parent, it is discouraging to see students work so hard and receive so little acknowledgment for their efforts. The coaching quality has also been disappointing in several programs, with some coaches appearing disengaged and doing little to foster enthusiasm, pride, or a positive team culture.
Having experience with other Poway Unified schools, particularly Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo, the difference is just striking. Those schools foster strong school pride, celebrate athletic and academic achievements, and create an environment where students feel valued. At Westview, many events feel poorly organized and lack the energy and enthusiasm that help build a strong school community.
Even the gym reflects this lack of pride. Rather than serving as a place that showcases student accomplishments and school history, it feels like a cold, gray space with virtually no displays, trophies, banners, records, or awards celebrating the achievements of Westview students and teams. Walking into the gym, there is little sense of tradition, accomplishment, or school identity. It is just depressing.
The administration has also been difficult to reach, with communication often feeling unresponsive and concerns not being addressed at all. While Westview has many talented students and dedicated teachers, the leadership, school culture, and athletic experience fall far short of what families should expect from a high-performing high school in the Poway Unified School District.

My experience at this school has been mixed. Coming from the North East, the environment felt quite different and, at times, uncomfortable. It sometimes seemed like visibility, attractiveness and social confidence played a role in how students were perceived academically, which is discouraging for quieter/average looking students. Better training around equal student engagement might help improve this. Certain teachers are over friendly to boys which is rather alarming.

The teaching quality is average, and the school appears to rely more on its reputation than strong academics.

Westview High School is consistently ranked among the top public high schools in California, placing in the top 60 statewide and top 5 in the San Diego area. With a 98% graduation rate, strong AP participation, and high proficiency in math and reading, the school is well-known for its rigorous academics and strong college preparation. Students benefit from a wide range of programs in STEM, arts, and extracurricular activities, though the large class sizes and competitive environment can feel intense at times. Overall, Westview offers an excellent, high-achieving education for motivated students.

Think 2x before enrolling your student here. This is one of the two toxic schools in PUSD. Here, rumors spread like wildfire and teachers do not respect admin. Admin does not do administration rather just bends down to teachers whims and fancies. Weak leadership. Teachers do not care about teaching. The recent issue involving the athletic coach in the other high school has already happened at wvhs. Rather than being a person of authority, guidance, here the teachers are back slapping friendly to students. Leading to issues. Racially motivated bad behaviors are not discouraged by school authorities.

Super toxic vibe. Popular kids basically get free As. Most clubs are pointless. Teachers are pompous with fragile egos. Teachings mid, except AP Chem, its actually good. AP Studio Art was fun and a chill break from all the STEM. Some younger teachers are kinda sus, and the schools had issues like that before. Good for arts and humanities though. Drugs are a real problem, theres literally a dealer on campus. Counselors are always busy but at least they try. The school has various cliques based on race. Very hard to form real relationships when teachers favor particular cliques. This happens in the Math department the most. Honestly, not sure admin does anything about our complaints about dirty student restrooms, drugs, ants all over the place etc..

Will not recommend this school.

If you are dark skinned, expect discrimination. White and white adjacent works. Very disappointed. All positive reviews here are probably written by admin.

Westview School is great all around. They treat me nicely and I do my work. Not much else to say about it. It isn't perfect but it's far better than ok. Not too much to complain about other than the fact I want more money to be put into other sports aside from football, Maybe a little more money into other sports so we can buy better and not half-broken equipment with. Overall great school with really good academics, hoping to have a good two more years here.

A competitive high school comparable or better than many private schools in San Diego. Each year students graduate to join prestigious colleges like MIT/Harvard/Stanford/Yale/Duke/NYU... not to mention top UCs as well as Cal Poly.

My daughter is black an has emotional learning differences due to historic trauma. She was suspended repeatedly and was eventually expelled. They determined that her behavior was "social maladjustment," not based on her disability. They don't know what the heck they are doing with a child with multiple emotional and learning disabilities. They probably would have if she had less melanin in her skin. Unless your kid is white or asian, and is destined for college, this school will neglect and abandon the kids. They don't want to throw off their metrics.

As a parent, this school definitely lacks in communication. Just received an email about police activity on campus, and when I wrote to the principal for clarification, was told that a student needed additional support. So, potential school shooter? Who knows. Security at this school is a joke. Teachers teach to the test. My kid actually had a teacher quit last year and not show up for weeks, and not even the school knew it!!! PUSD is a joke compared to how they advertise themselves.

We relocated from the Bay Area, we are delighted that our kids are getting a quality education on par with the most prestigious private schools. The student teacher ratio is excellent and the staff is providing the attention that the students need even during the most difficult past two years. Thank you.

We moved here for the schools. PUSD were consistently ranked as some of the best schools in California, and even the whole nation. Now in 2021 we're moving away because of the schools. Remote Zoom meetings with 25 students are not effective for my kids. Clubs are either cancelled or remote only. Even outdoor sports have been cancelled most of the year. Some teachers are giving out grades like candy to keep up their statistics, and being VERY flexible with attendance.

PUSD has no clear timeline to return to regular activities. Based on current state guidelines, it looks like PUSD won't reopen for regular activities until 2022, or even later. For Westview to re-open, SD County would need to be in "Red Tier", which is less than 7 COVID cases per week out of 100k population. That's a VERY low number of cases, and given that this disease is probably already endemic, a low level of cases will be around for a very long time, even with the vaccine. So, the long-term status quo for Westview appears to be Zoom meetings.

Meanwhile, as I write this, children in nearly every other state have the opportunity to attend school in person. Sports and clubs are ongoing, as normal. Kids are getting good high school experiences and educations in many places. Schools are operating under CDC guidelines, and they're generally quite safe.

Most of the issues I bring up here have more to do with California as a state, rather than with PUSD. But regardless of whose fault it is, this is not a "Great School". Far from it.

With a quarter system, you have to be on top of your work. Students help each other out with notes...Our ASB and many clubs are strong and being involved is very important. Hopefully theres a club that fits, but if not , you can start your own.

Principal Zig is the best. Listens to parent and student concerns. Stays involved and even goes to sporting events to watch teams play and cheer them on.
