Miller Career and Transition Center presents itself as a school dedicated to helping students with special needs develop confidence, independence, self-advocacy, and the skills necessary for adulthood. Unfortunately, my experience was a rather stark contradiction of that promise.

When I first arrived, Miller seemed promising. As time went on, however, the cracks became impossible to ignore. Personal matters brought to staff did not always feel private. At times, it seemed like everyone knew everyone else's business. When I sought help with serious concerns, I was labeled a “gossiper,” a “drama queen,” or someone who “starts drama.” I was asking for help, not auditioning for a role in the school gossip mill.

I was a student. I was still learning how to communicate, handle conflict, and advocate for myself. I needed adults to guide me, not ridicule me or make me feel like the problem simply because I had one. I also remember needing to speak privately with the principal about a serious and potentially harmful issue, yet not feeling that I was given the private conversation I needed. For a school that emphasizes self-advocacy, that was extremely disappointing.

I was even told I had an “attitude problem” because I communicated too maturely. Apparently, being articulate, asking questions, and expecting to be treated with respect could be interpreted as an attitude. That is not maturity needing correction; that is a student being misunderstood.

The greatest problem is the outcome. Miller says it wants students to leave confident, independent, prepared for adulthood, and capable of advocating for themselves. I left feeling confused, hurt, depressed, unsupported, and displaced. I did not feel prepared for adulthood. I felt like I had spent years trying to navigate an environment that was supposed to teach me how to navigate the world.

I am not saying every staff member was bad, nor that Miller has nothing worthwhile to offer. But a mission statement means very little when a student's actual experience tells a completely different story.

Students with special needs deserve adults who listen without labeling, protect their privacy, take their concerns seriously, and understand that speaking up is not “drama.”

Miller was supposed to teach me how to use my voice. Instead, I learned to be careful about using it.

And honestly, for a school whose entire purpose is preparing students for adulthood, that should be a little embarrassing.

This school seemed grate at first but then when I started my year there and it got later on in the year that is when the faults started to hit .. Staff calling students "Drama queens" with there problems or what ever and the principle does not bring you into his office when you need to talk to him alone about an harmful issue towards you.. This school seems like a grate school witch im not saying its not but there are allot of things that adults need to realize that some of us students do not tolerate at all and its hurtful to us .. such as I do not appreciate being called a "Drama queen" or a "Gossiper" like when I have an issue and I talk to a teacher about it I get called a "Gossiper" like um grow up if you need to know the problem to help then please just listen and there tolerance level there for being appropriate is way to high like you have to watch what you say to much or you will be known for being very "INAPPROPRIATE" and I have been told that I have a attitude problem because I act like an adult well I am just a student that is very mature and I don't need a teacher or any adult at the school telling me I am to adult acting like or "drama queen" or anything .. >:o(
