Riley/New Dawn School

Riley, Unified Day, New Dawn, and Marcy Schools are part of San Diego Unified School District, Special Education-Specialized Settings for students with emotional disabilities and or severe behavioral issues.The Riley campus includes multiple services and programs including Mental Health Day Treatment. The campus includes 3-separate schools; Riley-Unified Day- and New Dawn. Marcy is another High School Day Treatment located on a separate facility. Ms.Danielle Clark is the Site Administrator for all 4-schools. Riley-Unified Day-New Dawn & Marcy, along with the entire Special Education Division was reorganized in effort to meet the recommendations of the Tom Hehir Report. Tom Hehir and Associates were commissioned by Superintendent, Dr.Cohn to review the overall services and delivery system in place in the current Special Education Programs Division of SDUSD. Although the changes were made quickly at Riley Ms.Clark and her team of educators, mental health care providers, and clerical support work extremely hard to ensure students educational and mental health opportunities are improving.

Four schools occupy the Riley campus making it difficult to identify whom you need to contact on a day-to-day basis, when communication challenges exist and when the need arises to make a request or have decision makers available. My son has been at one school on the campus for 1 1/2 years and has made no progress despite extraordinary efforts on my part. The staff and their leadership are not knowledgeable about special education rights and laws and the school staff does not consider parents part of the IEP team. The school IEP team members do not work collaboratively which is counter to the purpose the educational environment and supports relative to this type of placement.
