The strength of this school lies with its teachers. They are hard working, sincere, and do the best they can to positively influence the lives of their students inside and outside of the classroom. They are most limited by the aptitude of the general student body, which is more of a systemic issue that needs a deeper fix that Kearny BST cannot be expected to address in the 3.5 years they have them. Ideally Id prefer even more support and accolades given to the teachers at BST- they truly deserve the best of everything and Im very thankful for the time my children have had with them.

Most students are tracked to early graduate, and motivated students have the ability to take dual enrollment classes or regular college classes (no grad credit) from city colleges and universities. Mesa is most common since its in close proximity, but my recent graduate was able to take classes at UCSD, USD, and Miramar College in an effort to seek out more academic rigor and opportunities.

Most of the parents reading this want to know how effective an education at Kearny BST is, and rest assured that if your student is motivated and willing to seek out academic opportunities, they can thrive. My recent graduate was able to get a highly competitive four year full ride merit scholarship to a Top 20 private university with a yearly cost of attendance of about $96k, and was able to get into all of the UCs and all other top 20 schools he applied to. If they are willing to do the work, they will most likely stand out among their peers.

To the students reading this, Kearny is very diverse, and has a lot of activities and sports available. Even though they didnt grow up in San Diego, my kids were able to find their core friend groups and make lasting and well meaning relationships. The small school system is similar to Hogwarts- most of your friends will be within your small school (BST) since you have all of your classes together but if you branch out youll be able to meet kids from the other small schools via extracurriculars.

For things at Kearny that are weaker vs other schools in the San Diego Unified School District- its definitely the lack of honors, IB, AP, or any kind of testing prep or support. It makes it exponentially more difficult for motivated students to thrive in rigorous academic settings and you may need to support your child with extra resources since they will need to catch up to the baseline of students with AP/IB/DE at their Universities.

Kearny BST is a high school like no other, offering an incredible curriculum for those interested in biology & technology. With that being said, Kearny BST is geared towards students who strive to be the best version of themselves and are motivated by an interest in hands-on work. This high school offers students a chance to not only learn, but to explore and discover a world of possibilities, enhanced by college-career technical education. If your student is a lifelong learner, this school is perfect for them.

Kearny BST has been a phenomenal school with such loving and caring teachers and faculty who are constantly supporting us. They care about us as people and our futures. I have been exposed to many internships, career opportunities, research avenues, scholarships, and more. There are many opportunities for honors, AP, and dual-enrollment classes. Through the help of Kearny BST, I have been awarded a full-ride scholarship to a Top-20 University, and I wouldn't have changed anything about my academic journey.

Im currently a junior at kearny BST and im proud to say that my school has taught me more than any other school has. The teachers are consistently supportive especially of student athletes who arent always in class due to games. The admin has a 0 tolerance bullying policy,theres rarely any fighting. At kearny BST were all a big family and we all support eachother in and out of school. Ill forever be grateful for the teachers who have become role models and mentors to me like Mrs Ogo and Mrs JJ and i think Kearny BST has a very powerful staff with the ability to create college and career readiness amongst their students.

My experience at Kearny has been very motivating, I enjoy the four pathways because they allow students to figure out early on what they plan to do after high school. I genuinely think the teachers and staff are amazing. They care for each and every student academically and individually, wanting only whats best for us to succeed. Personally, I attend the school of Biomedical Science and Technology, here I learned what I want to study in university, while also having the opportunity get college credits for the science related courses I am interested in. Although each student has the choice of specialized classes depending on their pathway, we still have the ability to participate in awesome clubs and sports which allow us to meet people who we wouldnt normally have classes with. So far, I am having a very cool high school experience here.

This school is a nightmare. None of the teachers except for like a handful seem to form any connections with the students. Not only that the work that is expected from the students is simply outrageous. The kids here are worked to the bone. There have been many fights and almost all of the students are toxic and rude. I've seen first hand people vaping in the urine covered bathroom. All the toilets are always unflushed and the seats are also soaked in urine. In one of the stalls the N-WORD is quite literally engraved into the wall. The mental health care in this school is a joke if anything this school causes mental illness. For years the DMD roof was held up by duct tape. The students life and extracurricular activities like clubs are almost nonexistent. There is a severe lack of school spirit. The security guards are overbearing. The only good times I had while in this school was during the time I wasn't in it. This school gives dual enrollment opportunities to students so they can take college classes at the same time as their regular high school classes. This was the only time I actually had any enjoyment. But this is also an issue as it adds on even more work to the already overworked students. Casual racism is also a huge issue in this school there was a whole assembly regarding the use of the N-word which did not work in the slightest. Overall this school does one thing right, allowing students to early grad so they can get out of this school as soon as possible. I deeply regret asking my parents to enroll me into this school. A sibling of mine went to this school and they had a terrible experience and warned me. I really regret not listening to them.

Both of my children graduated from Kearny BST and are well prepared for post high school. This school allows students to take college classes both at Mesa College and on-campus. They also have opportunities to take dual-enrollment courses and AP courses. Because of this model, my kids were able to gain a lot of college credit, while still in high school, for free! In addition to the great college opportunities, the high school teachers are excellent. They seem to really care about the students and their well-being. This is a great school.

An exceptional school! My daughter thrived there, even with a 501 plan. I was skeptical about sending my daughter to a public school, but California is the gold standard for curriculums of all kinds. The four small "schools" at Kearny separates students by their interests and needs, which works well to alleviate bullying. In our experience, the staff and faculty are outstanding. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking for a nurturing but rigorous school environment. WELL DONE KEARNY!

Im an early graduating senior, an opportunity open to anyone willing to stay on track and work hard. Im currently participating in one of the schools unique experiences - by graduation, I will be a certified emergency medical technician (EMT), a unique program offered by the school. I also have a friend in the certified nurses assistant program, and they will be a CNA by graduation. Incredible opportunities not available elsewhere as far as I know. Many of us have also graduated with about a year of college already done, thanks to the dual enrollment program with mesa college up the road. Thanks for a great four years, Kearny BST.

This schools like any other normal school in my opinion. Currently a sophomore this year and I have a lot of thoughts. For learning, it really depends on the teachers you get and your interest in the subject. For teaching, again, depends on the teachers you have but honestly I was rather surprised. In the years Ive been in school I have never found such an amazing community. Everyone is friendly, respectful and helpful. Were a whole family here. For safety and social emotional support, its meh. Litterly the other day, I heard from countless of peers about this meeting or something talking about vape (big thing in our school - bathrooms) and the person blabbering says to not vape in school and to do it outside of school on your own time. Some thing in the lines of that. I found myself to be disgusted by this person after hearing this. That person, A GROWN ADULT, supposed to help create a positive generation does not even try to discourage or help its students, and the school allowing this person to speak such nonsense and not batting an eye should also be held accountable. There are definitely better schools out there, if I were to have kids, Id most likely not put them here. There are definitely way better schools with better opportunities. Overall if you wanna go to this school, go right ahead, its a pretty nice school, we get college classes and some opportunities. Theres a meh amount of clubs and BST is the only small school with AP courses. I believe only 2.

As a early grad and a soon to be graduating student at Kearny BST at the time of writing this. I can say with such conviction that Kearny BST has one of the best opportunities presented to their students on-campus and off-campus to pursue whatever interest in the biomedical field. The type of opportunities provided can range to the type of cool internship that students can take, programs outside the school that we're partnered up with, but also the classes as well! For example, BST students have the extraordinary opportunity to intern at Rady's Children Hospital under their chosen department. And we get to also be under the wing of medical professions in their specialty!

In the case for myself, I enjoyed a class taking called "GIS" which is Geographic Information Systems which teaches students to use computer-based tools to solve spatial issues through storing, visualizing, analyzing and interpreting geographic data. Which was really fun!

Throughout my time, it has been nothing but exciting, rigorous but also fun. And the change of leadership has reflected that over time. BST provides a unique and dynamic experience with its teachers, curriculum, and student culture that is centered around the vision of creating a community that one can call "family", And this 4x4 block schedule system is a reflection of that.

Overall though, if you wish to experience and learn something related to the biomedical field or computers then I highly recommend attending BST and checking out what they got going on!

There are good teachers here, and they'll take time out of their day to answer questions, and some are pretty chill. Sure, there are definitely some teachers who aren't as social or give a lot of attention to students who need it after class or even in class, but there still are some good teachers that I had the benefit of being with. Many of these teachers I've had were also funny and could make you laugh a good amount of times during the day. Some teachers would give advice not just on assignments but also would help with guiding you through college applications or advice on which classes you should take.
Homework could get overbearing on some classes at some points but there were breaks. The college courses and classes that give college credit at the end that you can take while in the high school also is a great perk since it's given me a cheap head start on my college experience, plus the fact that if you early grad you can take a full semester of classes at mesa community college.
The school principal is really nice as well. My main issue would be a lack of sufficient support from the counselor, but even still you could get help from other teachers.

Decent teachers, but they don't update their grades until the end of the grading period. And, they don't notify students of upcoming exams, give little notice on some assignments.

Principal is horrible. If you complain, your student will be harassed. She is a dictator that wants power and cares little about the success of the students. And, she is unwilling to listen to anyone that doesn't agree with her. She is not ethical, and is sneaky and manipulative and she isn't honest. I can't think of a worse leader of a school. She has a history of retaliating against the students of parents that complain.

Horrible at this. They discourage IEPs and 504s, and try to have the teachers say the student doesn't need it, even though every therapist and health expert thinks they do. It is a burden for the school, and they don't want that burden, so they don't go along with those recommendations and they just deny, deny, deny and that hurts the students' chances of success.

The administrators are the bullies in this school. They bully students if their parents file formal and legal complaints. Everything from grade changes long after a grading period ends, to deleting classes from a transcript, to refusing to sign off on scholarship applications, or IEPs or 504s - pure bullying at its worst, but by the Principal and administration.

I like security, but they take it too far, treating the students like inmates, examining their clothing, trying to see if you can see through a skirt, etc. Schools in the inner city are more secure and don't make students wear lanyards. But, the teachers don't care about the students and they don't bring their subjects alive to make it interesting. Not a good college prep school at all.

I am in awe in regards to why our children are not allowed to wear beanies on the school property. They said they have to wear the school's beanie to identify their students and that if they wore another hat they would not know who the kids are? What the Blank?

You are telling me that our children have to BUY your hat so they can be identified? What if they are not wearing a hat? lol They don't have an explanation for that! Our children have to freeze on the property because they can't wear beanies that have no logos or anything on it. They said it is a safety precaution! BS I am so upset about this ordinance that my child can't stay warm because you can't identify them without the school Beanie!!! WHAT????!!!

This school sucks. The only good thing about it is some of the teachers actually connect with the students. Other than that the staff is terrible. We haven't had a counsler who actually helped the school in a long time. The football team like never wins. Go to a better school. Everyone here is lazy and you get in trouble for anything.

SCT has hardly any classes, they offer only a few AP classes, and most of the teachers are un-motivated. Some are very very involved, but some just seem to loathe being there, and that has an impact on the students. The facilities are old and aren't conducive to a good education. The school is severely under-funded. The sports department is entirely abysmal, the facilities are laughable and decrepit. I would not recommend this school to anyone.
