My daughter is going into her sophomore year at SDHS. We werent sure what to expect last year, but we were so pleasantly surprised at how engaged SDHS staff are with the students. The school has a very active ASB, which my daughter is now a part of, and also has many student-led clubs, many of which focus on community service. She was also able to opt into the MedTech track, which is providing her opportunities to have real-life experience in medical venues across the county- they took a field trip to the brain lab in the spring! The student body is engaged in the athletics programs as well as having IB opportunities that remain available, we came from IB elementary and middle, so this was important. AP Spanish is on her schedule for this year, which is an incredible option for a 10th grader. The teachers and counselors have been responsive whenever I have reached out. I feel confident in sending my child to SDHS- and plan to have her younger sister attend as well. We are very happy there and see it as our best fit for her launch into college in a few more years.

I have two sons at the school, a senior and a freshman. Most teachers are very good, there are many choices of classes and plenty of sports opportunities and other activities. This school surpassed expectations.

I had 2 students go through 4 years each at SDHS and they both had great experiences. They were both involved in the IB classes and had a great, challenging education with amazing teachers. The counselors were very helpful and available and Mrs. Cohen-Vardi was phenomenal with helping both my students with college questions. Both students were very well prepared for college. They both were involved in the great clubs and sports that were offered and had an overall well rounded, positive experience. The only negative is they graduated before the completion of the construction, so they don't get to see and enjoy the final results. I highly recommend SDHS.

We have a son in 11th grade, and our experience thus far at San Diego High School has been entirely positive. The teachers are excellent and care about the students. There is vibrant student life with so many clubs and activities. The athletics program is first-class with more options than I've seen at any other high school in San Diego, and with multiple levels so that any student who wishes to get involved can do so (and even the most serious athlete will find a challenging environment in which to develop). We especially like the diversity of the school. Our son has become friends with students with many different backgrounds and perspectives - this is so important. And the academic offerings are first-class. Our son will be participating in the International Baccalaureate diploma program, demonstrated to provide the best college prep and with a strong history of graduates in the most competitive universities in the US and worldwide. I should probably address the school's location. Yes, it's in downtown San Diego. But the school is safe and being adjacent to City College allow SDHS to offer a wide array of college-level classes on campus (the professors just walk over) which SDHS students take for free. Also, it's really easy to pick-up and drop off students and the school is well connected to public transportation.

My son is a senior. He did the last 18 months virtually, and went back to in person class 2 weeks ago. The virtual classes were a joke, the fact that the school district doesnt mail grades home because of COVID-19 even more so. This week, my son has been home sick. I have called DAILY to report him absent, and to request assistance getting a COVID test. Every afternoon at 5:30, I receive 3 calls, one from each of the schools at the San Diego High campus, to report the unexcused absence. NO ONE has returned my phone calls, and the school principal has not returned my email. This has pretty much been my experience all 4 years. If you can afford private school, do not send your child to a San Diego Unified high school.
