Honestly - a Dream School! We had been at our neighborhood K-8 and another Charter.
MSA has been perfection for 7th and 8th; I so regret not having found it for 6th grade. Care is put into E V E R Y T H I N G and you will see this from the moment you step onto the pristine campus! The environment, the communications, the administration and staff are not just putting on a show if you tour. It is a dream school and I think that SD Unified School District needs to learn how MSA does what it does.

Magnolia Science Academy San Diego was a very welcoming, inclusive, and supportive school. The smaller campus allowed deeper connections with staff at all levels. Over the course of three years, my daughter had almost all of the teachers and even those she didnt have, as well as other staff, knew who she was. Other than normal tween/teen annoyance, I cannot think of one negative experience we had with staff at MSA. Im sure this is not a universal experience however, through speaking with other parents I think it is probably close. I am confident my daughter would have done fine at any middle school she attended, but because of our choice to have her attend Magnolia, she thrived and is in the best place she could be to step into high school.

My daughter just completed her 3rd year at MSA and we were incredibly happy with our experience! The education is solid, the staff is SUPER hard working and involved and the students/families are supportive, friendly and kind. The smaller student body makes for a close knit community. There is also amazing extracurricular and academic support for students to take advantage of. We are so grateful for this middle school and will always remember this special place!

They provide great experiences, extra-curricular opportunities, projects and trips. We also loved its diversity, inclusivity and that character development is essential to their culture.

Weve been here for one year and love the teachers, staff and overall atmosphere. Middle school has to be in of the toughest group of ages/grades and these teachers do an excellent job creating a community of safety and positivity for the kids. Principal Craig, teachers and coaches volunteer their time after school and on the weekends for extra help, tutoring and special clubs and Principal Craig attends almost all events. We love it and wish there was a high school. Looking forward to a new facility for the incoming kids in 3-5 years.

The teachers are amazing! My student had good
things to say about ALL of the hardworking and
dedicated staff. The one exception is 8th grade
English. The teacher was on their cell phone
constantly. The students felt like they did not
receive much instruction. The teacher was very
nice, but the students wanted to learn. My student
wished for more guidance and lessons! There is so
much more to do to inspire than just digital
worksheets (while the teacher is on the phone) and
reading just two books in 1 year isnt enough at this age. This class fell short. There were also numerous issues with the front desk staff including on the last day of school!The front desk person made people wait to find a seat for graduation even families with seniors who arrived early just for that reason. After a while the front desk person changed her mind (or was told?) and she then told that families they could take a seat, so the families who arrived early didn't get a decent seat. Families that arrived late were able to rush up and take the best seats. Thank you front desk once again. Maybe check before you bark
orders at the parents? There have been numerous
complaints about the front desk, so maybe it's time
to replace or retrain? The Dean of Academics needs to learn how to speak to children. He upset our honor roll student. He was rude without reason and said hurtful things. ***Student bathrooms are dirty and some have cockroaches!*** The school only allows visitors and inspection people use one restroom area. Is that so the horrible male student restroom isn't viewed? Please have more respect for the students and repair and clean the restrooms frequently. I will end with a good note. Mr. E is amazing and caring with the students. We observed him interacting with students and playing ball with them. All of his other interactions with us were good too. He's very professional. Mr. S. was missed this
year. It was nice seeing him back visiting the school
during the year.

My child has only attended this school for one year, but I am genuinely impressed. The teachers are very supportive and welcoming, fostering an environment where students feel understood and encouraged. I only wish we had discovered this school sooner so that my child could have started here earlier.

According to my students, the teachers have all been amazing.

As parents, the main issue is cleanliness. The restrooms have had roaches. My children have wanted to avoid the restrooms there as much as possible. Students must also use shared laptops in each and every class. The keyboards are not cleaned and my children keep getting sick. One classroom had visibly dirty desks too.

The school has a stricter adherence to dress code than most schools -parents you have to be engaged. Staff is very engaging and friendly, the school sponsored activities are fantastic. There was an incident with another student bullying my child. Communicated with the teacher, problem resolved.

Terrible experience, where my child was bullied and threatened thru a text message that she was going to get hurt after school, dean of students said that was ok to do because the bullied was mad.

I love this school because the teachers are very responsible and responsive. The old principal Mr. Serve was such a great person and a leader. New principal is trying her best and is very communicative and all over the place where she is needed.

We have two children enrolled here, two years apart. Could not be happier with the communication, support and involvement between teachers/administrators and parents. My kids are happy and excited to go & learn each day. My youngest just transitioned from public elementary and he is doing SO much better at Magnolia. Youngest has some special needs and the school has been VERY accommodating and connected with us on that. Much better than SD public school he was in last year.

Only complaint I would have is that the pickup/dropoff traffic is a MESS, but the school has an awkward setup with only one entrance/exit so it is understandable. Would be great if they could somehow coordinate with the public school next door to have a traffic path that allows for separate entrance&exits. But as far as complaints go that is minor.

Unfortunately I wish I could say great things after 2 years. The intro to the school & interactive orientation was promising. My child is extremely intelligent, engaged with his peers, teachers & staff, has received High Honor Roll, innovative awards & other achievements. The issue I have as a parent is with the principal, dean of students & other administrators calling me for the following reasons; child didn't use cross walk a block away from the school & 45 mins before school actually started, the other annoyance is when I get a phone call about dress code, my child 99.5% of the time has his uniform on or a university hoodie or sweatshirt which is also acceptable & considered dress code. My child will sometimes forget his extra uniform pants at the other parents home so we improvise, following the dress code adhering to black, blue or khaki bottoms. My son was sent to the office for wearing black jogger bottoms & had to miss class & stay in the office until someone was able to drop off a different pair of bottoms. Makes no sense for your child to miss class while waiting. Lastly DON'T believe the test scores, the kids ARE NOT challenged & hence the reason for the inflated scores. If your child is advanced and thrives in a challenging setting, this school is not for you. Sadly my son will not be completing his last year, his 8th grade year at MSA, I believe it would be a huge disadvantage to him once he were to enter 9th grade in a traditional high school setting because he would lack the organizational & time management skills and would have to adjust to the real world with actual take home homework.

The administration and staff are very disorganized and don't communicate effectively with each other. I was sent an email early in the school year from the "Dean of Students" that said my kid had done something wrong. I apologized, told them I would talk to her about it and thanked her. A week later I got a call from my child's teacher saying that I needed to come in for a meeting because my child had done the action again. I was shocked but I called to meet with the teachers to discuss the behavior. That's when I found out that she hadn't done the behavior again, that the "Dean of Students" didn't tell the teachers that I had emailed back and said I would discuss the behavior so the teachers thought that I ignored the email and didn't care about correcting my kids behavior so they wanted to see me in person. Also I have emailed or left messages when my daughter will be absent (first thing in the morning) and at least 3 times I got alerts at 3 in the afternoon saying my kid was absent and I needed to call or email with an explanation.

They talk a good game about clubs they offer after school but more then half of the clubs folded because they didn't have the staff to supervise them so they shouldn't give a huge list of clubs and after school programs they can't actually offer. One program they offered was the one of the reason's I chose the school and they ended up dropping it. Each grade also only has one teacher per subject per grade so if you aren't learning anything in Math too bad because there isn't another class to transfer into. They also have strange priorities about what is bad behavior and what isn't. They have an "Eddie Haskell" problem where the "sweet" kids who do terrible things are overlooked and the kids who are more outspoken, but are honest and don't hide infractions, are considered the troublemakers.

Homework is present, more in 8th than 6th. Most homework is started during class time, otherwise expected to be completed for "homework". Often, supplemental assignments offered for additional practice. Students are given multiple opportunities to connect to the content through intentional practice assignments to demonstrate mastery over time.

Students are greeted at the doors with smiles, high-fives/handshakes/fist bumps! The Admin is really attentive to parent and student questions and concerns. They are open to feedback and respond in a timely manner to address concerns as needed. The Admin are caring adults, flexible and firm, to ensure students are supported and accountable for all their action/inaction. "Bully Free Zone =)" is on the entry fence as a visual reminder every day. When student issues do occur, they are addressed immediately, investigates and treated with sensitively. Restorative Practices are utilized in conjunction with appropriate consequences to address and correct behavior and restore relationships. Learning how to work with those with conflict is a great life lesson!

My third child to go through Magnolia Science is now in the 7th grade. It is a lot of trouble for my wife and I to get him there and back from our home in the East County and also to enrichment programs which sometimes involve weekends. However, we are both very grateful for the education and mentoring our boys have received there.
Great staff and great students .
A huge benefit in personal growth can come from making a strong commitment to the after school clubs.

After 3 years of attending, this school, my child was no longer challenged as many subjects were changed, removed and no effective in preparing the upper classmates for high school courses. In her last year, most of her teachers were new hires and first time teachers, who didnt provide a clear understanding of what to expect throughout the school year. There were much activities provided for them to engaged with other peers, either. The school doesnt communicate well with its students on upcoming events.

I did not have a good experience here. We moved locations 8th grade year. They didn't finish the new campus yet so we were in a church until November. When the site was finished, we found ourselves stumble upon a yard full of bungalows, with no lockerooms and a lack of shade or greenery. P.E. was done in our regular uniform, which was a pain. My teachers were mixed when it came to how much I like them. English was good, although we got a lot of work, if you managed your time wisely you could go home with no homework a lot of the time. Math was good during my 6th and 8th year. Both those years I had kind and compassionate teachers who prepared me well for high school. However, 7th grade year for me was not good. I was in the advanced class, and for whatever reason they had the 6th grade teacher teaching it. (I had the 7th grade teacher in 6th grade since I was also in the advanced class) The 6th grade teacher had a lack of compassion, and actually refused to help some of the students in my class. When it came to history, history was just a mess. 6th grade was fine, but in 7th grade we got a new teacher who's only experience was substituting for a kindergarten class! She was clearly incompetent for the job, and quit about 2-3 months in. However, we received a replacement teacher who I hope is still there, for he ended up being one of my favorite teachers. 8th grade started, and we had a pretty good teacher, then, she quit for convenience purposes, and we had several substitutes for months on end. Then, we received a replacement. This replacement gave us a lot of unnecessary work, and even made us color and draw things to get a full grade. During the last work week of the year, he gave us an 11 page study guide to a "final" of which we had to copy down all the questions by hand and get the answers. He gave us three days to do this. After working on it day and night, I managed to get it done. However, many others didn't. Come final day, the teacher isn't even there, the test has a lot of questions, about half of which we didn't even learn about. I was certainly not getting a good grade on this. However, there were enough complaints from students that the staff took action and fired the teacher, while giving us all full credit on the test. Science was overall a positive experience. Through all three years I had great teachers.(over word count, can't write more)

Multiple teachers gave us meaningless assignments which, on the surface, felt like they were only intended to bore us and waste our time. Most of their assignments were bought online, only a few teachers gave us genuinely original assignments.

My daughter attended MSA beginning in the 6th grade. She is a minority student and has struggled with identity and cultural differences, as expected at this age. Although the school has a wide language curriculum, there initially was a very small African-American population which left my child feeling like an outsider. Some white students were culturally insensitive and at times racially biased, with no recourse.
However this past year the African-American representation has grown and we are hopeful for more representation and cultural sensitivity. Notwithstanding, the art/music program is outstanding. The drama department left something to be desired. The sports program could use new equipment and is in need of financial support, however where it is lacking in equipment, they make up for with ingenuity. We love the small student population, which allowed her transition from elementary to middle school to be less daunting. She is thriving with the curriculum and projects and her imagination is soaring. Overall, a good choice for us.

I am grateful that I found a middle school where both of my boys thrived both academically and socially. I credit the staff and teachers with creating a warm and welcoming environment. My oldest excelled at math and due to the excellent instruction by Mr. Cardiel he was was able to start 2 years ahead of his peers in high school. My youngest loves the fact he is enrolled in band as well as jazz. If they needed help they could attend tutoring after school. I also appreciate the fact that their physical education program actually teaches about a healthy mind and body. Overall, I would recommend this school highly!

My kids are currently attending MSA and they are all doing great and are very happy. The staff is very friendly and available. The teachers are good, we don't have too much homework. The kids have many different after school clubs to choose from, keeps them busy. Uniforms are great, one less thing to worry about in middle school:) We are very impressed with this school and are glad to have our kids in it.

This used to be an excellent school. Over the last two years it has fallen apart. If your child has a learning or behavioral disability do not send them here. The teachers lack compassion , patience, and education to be effective educators to these special kids. They know how to give negative points to the kids... but they do nothing to motivate, encourage, or inspire. LMAAC is a much better charter.

MSA has been a good choice of school for the last 3 years, way better than other public schools in the area. We like the small school size, and the uniform policies. Academically, I don't feel that grades accurately reflect a student's ability. It's too easy to get good grades, and not really retain the information long term. Most every kid is honor roll/high honor roll... I wonder if they are just teaching to the test. The teachers are very good, and don't set too much homework. We've not had the same kind of homework difficulties that we had in Elementary (hours and hours of h/w every night, tears, etc.). Saturday school has been made available for kids who need extra tuition, and there is tuition available after school almost every day. Good choice of clubs and extra curricular activities including sports teams. I like that there is music/band available to students at this school, but you must choose language OR music.... so not arts-based (as the name of the school suggests).

Magnolia used to be a great school. But I have noticed the education slipping in the past year. They have not kept consistent teachers. My children have had 3 Spanish teachers and 2 science teachers just this year. Also, the 6th grade math program is lacking since my son was there. I wish the administration would spend more time observing their teachers to continue their past standards.

Ever since my son joined MSA as a 7th grader, he has always been buried with homeworks, science projects and all other different school activities which keep him busy and progressing his scholastic abilities. School teachers are always helping the kids with everything they need and educating them a great discipline. As a parent I'm happy for our decision in choosing MSA for our son's middle school.

I transferred my daughter this year from a small charter school. She is in 7th grade. It has been a wonderful change. I feel she is being prepared for high school & the teachers have all been extremely helpful. I'm so glad we made the switch.

The teachers are definitely 5 star. Fortunately they have been great working with my child who has 504 and misses a lot of school. I've never seen such committed, caring people who truly care about their students.
Unfortunately the administration leaves a bit to be desired. The principal turn over rate is dizzying and getting the 504 followed is sometimes a struggle.
We stay because the teachers are just that good.

I was worried about my son starting middle school. Especially because he struggled in school and has an IEP. He started at MSA 7th grader. I have to say it was the best choice we ever made. My son made Honor roll this year! He actually loves school. I remember middle school has the most challenging years. He loves his school, friends, teachers, band, after school activities and even the tutoring. Our only regret is that we didn't send him there for 6th grade. We are definitely looking forward to the 8th grade next year!

Magnolia Science Academy San Diego is a great school to the kids who love science, technology, engineering and math. Teachers are so dedicated leading and instructing students' development and growth. There are all kinds of interesting clubs with no charge, like Robotic(Lego), future city, chess, cross country, leadership, chemistry and so on. My kid loves the school very much!

For my 12 year old, it is challenging and interesting. Next year, we are also sending our 11 year old. At the prior school, both kids were finished with normal work, so they had to help the teacher or read quietly to wait for the other students.

MSA San Diego is a wonderful learning environment. My 7th grade son is doing very well here. We chose the school for 6th grade for its smaller size but we have benefitted in so many other ways. All the teachers (not just his own) know my son by name. He is engaged in all of his classes. He always has access to free tutoring by his teachers and the after school extracurricular clubs have been very important to him (chess and robotics and so many other ones that are also free.) We wish we had sent our older daughter to MSA. I recommend this school to everyone.

My daughter has gone to this school since 6th grade and she is now an 8th grader. She really loves MSA! All of the teachers are young so they include modern items in their lessons so my daughter can understand it better. She is doing very well thanks to the wonderful teachers. There are also many clubs that my daughter can enjoy such as archery, comet media, comet leadership, and engineering. Her whole week is after school clubs and the free tutoring they offer. Whenever she feels that her grades are low, or maybe she really needs help on that one assignment, she can go to tutoring for help!

Great school! I have a daughter who graduated last year and another who is currently in 7th grade at MSA. Both have done very well there. The teachers and staff are dedicated and involved. The small environment allows the staff to know all the students. My kids both took advantage of the regular tutoring that teachers offer, as well as the multitude of clubs. And having the kids wear uniforms seems to make the environment more conducive to learning. We highly recommend this school.

It is a great school. My daughter is an 8th grader now and my son just started there as a 6th grader. The teachers are all very knowledgeable of their particular subject and really care about their students. It is a smaller middle school which makes it nicer to have smaller class sizes. They have a lot of fun activities for the kids through out the year.

I drove 25 minutes (without traffic) to take by daughter to MSA. It is will worth the drive. This is her second year there. The staff, teachers, and both deans are very involved. You can tell there is a genuine love of teaching and support at this school. It may not look like much from the front (the school is slowing refurbishing from the prior elementary school grounds) but I did not choose this school for the cosmetics of the structures and amenities. What makes the difference is the smaller classes, the individual attention and the extra after school tutorings and support. If you have any doubt, just attend on of the open houses!

This school created some of the best memories of my life. When I transferred to MSA in the middle of the years, I was pretty terrified. I thought the uniforms were going to be horrible, and as a kid, I believed the rumors that the school was haunted. On my first day there, I was immediately welcomed by all the students and teachers. Now, four years later, those kids who made me apart of their group my very first day, I'm still best friends with. The teachers are amazing, and I really felt like the cared about me; as a student and person. If I felt I was struggling or needed clarification, I knew my teachers would be more than happy to help. I learned SO much, especially 8th grade. I learned more that year than all my time in High School. MSA is a great school, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great School. Best teachers. I like the smaller setting and individual attention. Many science and sports events. I am blessed to have my daughter attend Magnolia.
