My daughter has been attending Maria Montessori for some time now, and I couldnt be happier with our experience. The school provides a warm, nurturing environment that truly supports childrens growth and development.

Were especially grateful for the amazing teachers Ms. Tchu, Ms. Delgado, and Ms. Andy. They are not only dedicated professionals but also genuinely kind and attentive. They always take the time to understand each childs needs and make learning fun and meaningful.

The Montessori approach has really helped my daughter become more independent, curious, and confident. She looks forward to going to school every day and always comes home excited to share what she learned.

I highly recommend Maria Montessori to any parent looking for a school that combines quality education with care and respect for each childs individuality.

My little sister just finished her first year at Maria Montessori, and we couldnt be happier with the experience. As a Brazilian family, we were initially a bit concerned about how she would adapt since her first language is Portuguese. We worried that the language barrier might make learning difficult for her.

To our surprise and delight, not only did she quickly improve her English, but she also learned to read and count confidently in English. She absolutely loves going to school and adores her teacher. Its clear that the school provides a nurturing and effective learning environment.

Were truly impressed by how well the staff teaches and cares for the children. I would wholeheartedly recommend Maria Montessori to any family looking for a warm, supportive, and high-quality early education.

We are so pleased with our experience having enrolled our son in preschool here at Maria Montessori - it was the best decision we could have made for his education! We toured many facilities looking at both daycares and preschools and immediately felt MMS was the right choice for us based on the initial tour. MMS follows true Montessori practices and takes a gentle approach to supporting children's emotions and growth. Now after his first year here, he has learned so much! At 3 years old, he is already practicing writing his name, reading short words, and loves to count. I also love that they teach things you wouldn't normally expect in a preschool curriculum - he's learned about space, anatomy of animals, and his favorite Montessori method - practical life activities which are all about self-care and independence.

Aside from everything he has learned, I love that parents get to be involved with volunteer experiences and all the amazing events the school puts on. They host an annual spring showcase which is the highlight of the year getting to see the kids perform across all age groups. His classrom recently just held a Mother's Day event where the kids celebrated us moms with the cutest little tea party! It warms my heart seeing him learn so much and how much he loves his school and teachers. His teachers are the absolute kindest people and I feel so grateful to have him in their care. We are very happy with our choice and have enrolled him in the summer program and the coming school year. Looking forward to when our youngest is able to join him!

MMS has been a tremendous school for our son. The schools dedication to the principles of Montessori education has been impressive, especially considering the common tendency for schools to stray from their founding vision. MMS does exactly what it says it will: offer deep respect and authentic affirmation of the child and establish an environment in which true learning can take place. I recommend the school for any parent who desires an authentic Montessori education.

As a parent very familiar with Montessori, having gone to a Montessori school myself as a child, and practicing some of the philosophies with our child since she was born, it was so important to me to find a school that not only had Montessori in the name, but that truly lived by those principles and had teachers who were certified in the method with years of experience.
When our child joined the preschool room in the middle of the school year, I wasn't sure how the transition would be for her, but she felt so welcomed by everyone and quickly felt at home with the students and also at the school, which was a relief as she had been at home with me since being born and occasionally being watched by family.
She has truly thrived in this environment and I'm convinced it goes beyond the Montessori curriculum (although that was my initial focus in choosing the school) I truly believe it's because of the teachers, and all of the staff's true dedication and care for each one of the students.
I have yet to have any questions or even slight concerns that have not been fully received by the staff in an appropriate manner and with consideration for the school as a whole.
I truly don't think I could have found a better school for our child!

My son is now in Kindergarten in MMS and has been in the school for 3 years. He has been thriving and learning so much in this school. The staff is really competent and caring. The school has also handled the pandemic in a great way with great safety measures and minimal closure

We love Maria Montessori School! Our son attended MMS for pre-school for two wonderful years and we were able to come back for this school year (2021-22) for 5th grade. They have been incredibly supportive and accessible and have followed the science during the pandemic so that we could feel safe in their welcoming environment. My incredibly bright son who loves to learn has declared MMS to be an amazing school - and we agree! The combined 5th-6th grade class has allowed him to make friends with a variety of different children and also allowed him to move ahead in his favorite subject of math.

Our daughter joined MMS for 8th grade due to the pandemic in 2020-2021 school year and had in-person learning for the majority of the year. What I learned about this great little school is that your child can get a private education that is not only affordable but where they can get more personalized attention. If your child excels in math or needs extra help in math, either can be accommodated. In the case of my daughter, we discovered she was dyslexic in 8th grade and the school accommodated her curriculum so that she could replace foreign language with a specific dyslexic tutoring course off campus. The teachers and administration are happy to work with your needs. Generally speaking the school offers a rigorous curriculum but can make accommodations when needed.
Middle school are tough years and I would definitely recommend that parents of middle school kids consider what this small private school has to offer to best prepare your student for high school.

We are in our second here at Maria Montessori School with our daughter in room five. We have absolutely loved her experience here so far and expect to continue on into kindergarten as well. The school is such a warm and welcoming place. My daughter loves going to school every day and is coming home telling me about all of the things she is learning about. She has made wonderful friends, and she loves her teachers. I can tell the teachers are well-trained in the Montessori method and MMS emphasizes grace and courtesy in all aspects of school life. Well we try to have realistic academic expectations for our four-year-old, we have been excited to see her so interested in learning language, math, and geography. This is truly an exceptional school in San Diego and we are glad to have found it.

We are very thankful to have found Maria Montessori School for our kids. The Montessori system has been a great experience and fits for our sons, so now it is hard to think in traditional schools. We are very happy at this school. The teachers and parents community are also great. Our children have received all the support regarding specific needs and issues as they arise. We are confident that our kids' educational experience at MMS and emotional needs are met in this environment. Great school!

We toured many schools before deciding to enroll our son (then 3 years old) at the Maria Montessori School. With so many options, it was initially hard to know what type of school was going to be the best fit for him, but once we saw what Montessori offers, we knew that this was what we wanted for him. The Maria Montessori School provides a nurturing environment that allows kids to be kids, while at the same time, taps into their natural curiosity and their vast potential and ability to learn. Our son is now in Kindergarten in his third year at the school and he has truly thrived! Kids all learn differently and we feel like MMS has helped him be the best version of himself, both academically and in terms of social emotional development. All of his teachers and the administration have been fantastic. We are so happy that we found MMS and highly recommend this school!

Our family loves that the school offers an academically challenging environment that is also warm and nurturing and appreciates each child for who he/she is. The Montessori approach focuses on child-centered learning, in which the child decides his/her schedule for the day and is self-paced in their work. In this way the students learn independence, critical thinking, and perseverance. Each class has a low student-to-teacher ratio: over the past four years my sons classes have averaged about 7-10 students for every teacher/aid. The teachers are skilled (many of them have been there for 10 or 20+ years) and provide individualized attention to each student. For my son who is relatively academically advanced, this has worked out wonderfully for him as his teachers are always giving him new challenges that meet his interests and academic level. There are extra-curricular teachers for PE, computer, language (Spanish or Mandarin) and music. I also appreciate the many opportunities for parental involvement and volunteering. Best of all, during the pandemic the school was able to safely re-open for in-person learning in the fall of 2020, which has made such a tremendous difference in my sons learning and social-emotional health!

We moved back to San Diego about 3 years ago and I was carefully choosing the Montessori school for my child who is 10 years old now. Maria Montessori School is one of the few schools here in San Diego where each child is developing strong academic skills, independence, confidence and positive attitude towards learning.
The administration and teachers are very professional, passionate and kind. I am very impressed how strong is the MMS community ! My son loves this school! And I believe it is one of the best Montessori schools in San Diego.

We have now been at MMS for two years, going on our third. My children have been attending the upper elementary and middle school programs. We have LOVED this school. The teachers are extremely attentive to our children's individual needs and interests. The school focuses on going at the pace the child needs. We moved from another area, and the teachers have spent many hours working with our children to ensure that they have transitioned well. In addition, the foreign language programs and PE are superb. As for the classrooms, you will not find teachers anywhere else who come to school happy to see the children and ready to teach them--you can see their dedication. The middle school experience in particular is one that cannot be missed--this critical time in adolescence is met with a teacher who understands their needs and desires, and honors this age-group, challenging them to be the best they can be as themselves as well as members of our world community. Finally, schools depend on parent support. You will not find more dedicated parents than here at MMS. Coming in towards the end of my children's elementary years, we were met with open arms and a sense of family. We have no doubts that this is the school for our children to ensure they develop into strong, confident people who respect the world's people and environment. I also know that as they soon embark on high school they are well-prepared academically, socially and emotionally!

Our experience, especially in the upper levels - 5th - 7th has been one of dramatic growth. The teaching method of Montessori is and has been doing successfully, for years, what the public school system is attempting to do now. They take a holistic approach to subjects and integrate the material in all aspects of their curriculum resulting in a much deeper level of understanding and retention of the subject matter. The child is also able to relate that material to the real world and effectively think about changes that could be made in the world to solve existing problems. The secondary school, in particular, is an integral part of teen development. In that it really allows the student to develop a strong sense of self, inner confidence and conscious awareness of their peers. This in turn really helps them to be leaders instead of followers - something parents can only truly hope for as they set their teens up to embark as individuals in this dynamic, sometimes scary, ever changing world.

One reason I really like this school is that it teaches the 'why' in math. My son's teacher, Ms Brown, explained to me how she is teaching the kids to find the square root of a number. Ms. Brown used an example number of thirty thousand something as she walked through the steps: she showed the visual tools they use, how those tools can be used to find the answer and how they translate into the algebraic equation.

When I was a youth I was frustrated that my teachers told us to memorize a process instead of teaching us why the process was that way. This really is the school I wish I had gone to.

I would highly recommend MMS if you are considering a school for your child. Our son started here in 2018 when he was 3 and had not been in child care prior to starting their pre-K program. He was understandably very anxious at the beginning of the school year and the teachers were outstanding in supporting both him and us as we got through the difficult first few weeks of daily separation. We have watch our smart and sensitive son come out of his shell, make new friends, learn diverse concepts and thrive in an environment that emphasizes acedemic as well as personal growth.

In both years that our son has attend MMS his teachers have taken a tremendous personal interest in his well-being and development. They helped him to get over the initial trepidation and discomfort of being away from home for the first time and have guided him to become much more confident and self-assured.

I have not seen any evidence of bullying nor have I heard about bullying at the school. This strongly suggests that bullying is dealt with quickly and effectively.

Our overall experience has been exceptionally good and I cannot recommend MMS highly enough. Academics are strong. Focus on character and kindness is welcome. Communication with parents is good, but could be improved. The only area I wish were stronger is the school's sense of community among the parents (but the lack of community may be a function of how geographically distributed the families are). If you are considering sending your child to MMS, you should feel very comfortable with your choice. If you're not considering MMS, perhaps you should.

Poor. This will be our last year here. Last year so many families left and everyone we asked why said it isn't worth the 11,000 and fundraising they ask for. It is true. There was a mass exodus last year and I would suspect this year will be no better.

I wonder why the above reason is happening? The principal is totally ineffective. We have been so disappointed with this administration. You hardly know who the person running the school even is. We have had to go to her on two occasion of which both were just given excuses and absolutely no change made. My husband jokes this school is stuck in the 70's. The look and everything else.

Our 4-year-old son enjoyed his short 7-week time very much during the summer at MMS. However, he was rejected by the school for ridiculous excuses.
We had a behavior coach for our son at his previous preschool to help him better recognize his emotional state and achieve better self regularization. When he started at MMS, I asked the coach to help him with the transition for 3 weeks. And that's where all the prejudice against our son started.
It was a hard time for him: his farther moved away to northern California in May; his brain tumor grew bigger and caused more frequent mild seizures than before and he was about to have a surgery to remove it in late August; he left his previous preschool where he spent 3 years and transitioned into a new school. That's a lot on a 4-year-old boy's shoulders.
After 6 weeks at the camp, the director and the classroom teacher told me that "the school is not a good fit" for our son, because (1) he leaned backwards on the chair and fell on his back; (2) he climbed up the staircase (after I picked him up from school with me watching him, and I stopped him immediately after the office teacher told us not to do that); (3) he ran out of classroom a few times without teacher's permission.
They recommended a few schools for him - all are for kids with special needs such as developmental problems. Although our son has brain tumor, he has never been evaluated as having developmental problem. On the contrary, he is considered smart and caring by the teachers in his previous preschool.
I simply could not understand how the director and teachers judge and reject a kid based on a few instances that a normal active 4-year-old boy would do, especially given the circumstances he was facing at the moment. It's almost like that they were using magnifying glasses to look for "troubles" to use as excuses to reject him. I was transparent in communicating with the school teachers about our situation and our son's medical condition. Instead of compassion and warmth, all we got from MMS was cold rejection with prejudice.

MMs is truly the school I wish I had attended! Children are treated as the individuals that they are, instead of a 'one size fits all' educational approach. The subjects are presented in a way that engages the children and encourages them to explore the topic; they learn because they are interested! The curriculum builds in complexity each academic year from preschool through middle school, so that the students have a deep and multidimensional understanding of their subjects. I have had two children graduate from MMS, and they have been very successful at the private high school they attend.

Classrooms at MMS are mixed ages, which gives the students opportunities for varied friendships and to learn at the pace that best suits them. Subjects are taught with a very 'hands on' approach, very true to Montessori teaching. Over the years I've watched this school nurture children with a wide range of personalities and learning styles. The small student-teacher ratio allows for a very personalized approach, and the wide range of subjects taught is truly impressive!

I strongly recommend that you arrange a tour of Maria Montessori School. You really need to talk to the administration and teachers and watch the classrooms in action to really understand how truly special this school is!!

After finally deciding to remove our children from this school for social reasons (no real community and tiny classes) we discovered our children were below grade level in the local public schools. Extremely disappointing and thousands of dollars spent at this school. It seems with each grade the teachers get worse. We had a terrible experience in both third and fourth grade.

Maria Montessori School is an outstanding place that has both challenged and nurtured our child for the past eight years. We have loved this special community that, in addition to the academics, teaches responsibility for self as well as compassion for others. Rather than the traditional school model of a teacher lecturing the entire class, we like that at MMS, the teachers conduct many lessons in 2 or 3 small groups. This allows for kids at more advanced levels to still be challenged in one group, while others who need additional support with a particular subject have the assistance they need without feeling less than or different. We've really appreciated that MMS is a true Montessori School. They teach practical life skills, problem solving, courtesy, and caring for our world. Kids that attend MMS want to be there and are excited to come to school each day! They are part of a community that welcomes them just as they are. Our 8th grader has felt truly at home at MMS, thanks to the warm, caring and committed teachers. We could not have had a better school experience!

Our family loves MMS! Our son transferred in first grade after having a less than mediocre experience at a charter school that focused on all children doing the same work at the same pace. We had been concerned because he was losing his passion for learning. This is never an issue at MMS! Children are stimulated through the unique Montessori curriculum which also includes zoology, biology, geography, music, computers, foreign language and P.E. in addition to the other academic subjects. The multi-level approach is so beneficial socially, emotionally and academically. Children work at their own level and thrive on the project based school setting. They learn practical life skills which sadly are no longer taught or valued at most other schools. While we knew MMS would challenge our son academically, what happily surprised us most was the emphasis on the whole child in terms of social and emotional development. This is so crucial to raising a young person who will be able to navigate life as an adult. It is also refreshing how there is no homework (busywork) in the earlier years so you can enjoy your child and your family time in the evening. The teachers are highly experienced, and the director (Ms. Stoneman) is one of the kindest, calmest, most understanding and serene administrators Ive ever met! We vicariously enjoy this unique school experience through our child, wishing we had been blessed to have attended a school like MMS. To be fair, this school isn't for everyone.... if you want a school with lots of tests, homework, textbooks, stifling behavior charts, and incentive based learning, then this won't be a match for your goals. However, if you are looking for a non-traditional approach to learning that will have your child exuding excitement from his/her school lessons, while thriving socially, emotionally while learning invaluable life skills, then this is the school for you.

This is the second year that my children have been attending this school. They love school and are thriving. Both children are able to work to their own ability and not conform to what the rest of the class is learning. They do their fundamentals everyday (reading and math) but they are challenged in that they can work to their own specific level in these subjects. ,My son's teacher has such a love of teaching and it shows. She teaches through real life experiences. Their classroom held a cafe where they served pancakes for the class and administration. My son had to fill out an application applying for a job, measure out ingredients, make inventory lists and on the day of the cafe, he needed to use calm problem solving skills to deal with normal restaurant issues. Talk about real life experiences!!! We are very happy with this school and appreciate how much the teachers love their jobs!!

My wife and I have our three children (a first, fourth and seventh grader) attending Maria Montessori School and we have nothing but good things to say about it. It's our fourth year in this school and we've found that all of their teachers have been great. Kids of different age ranges socialize with one another, they learn about different cultures, they work independently. I love that all the children are taught to be independent. The school has various activities and also field trips to satisfy their curiosity about many things in life. One of the most important things is that we are so glad that Maria Montessori School has also middle school and we feel so blessed knowing that our oldest daughter is learning in a wonderful environment where she works with her peers and her terrific teachers during this delicate and sometimes difficult age she's facing. She has all the support that she needs without the difficult and dangerous situations. I believe that we made a wise choice in choosing this excellent school!!! I only wish there were a Montessori high school...

We love this elementary school. The teacher:student ratio is amazing (7:1 in my daughters kindergarten class) and the teaching model is fantastic. Our daughter is happy to go to school every day and enjoys learning. We hope to stay at this school all the way through 8th grade. I just wish they had a high-school!

My children have been attending Maria Montessori School for the past 8 years, and we love this school! My children have a passion for learning, enjoy going to school, and have made great friends. The oldest will graduate from the 8th grade this year, and we couldn't be happier with the middle school experience! She has been admitted to a private high school and has been placed in honors classes, in addition to being self-confident and comfortable expressing her views. The middle school offers an individualized education, Spanish and Mandarin language, computer instruction, and speech and debate. Students are listened to and treated with respect at all levels, and are expected to treat others with respect. Homework is reasonable and purposeful, which leaves time for the after school activity of your child's choice! This is a GREAT school!!!!

Thought the academics are true to Montessori principles and the classroom structure is rich and appropriate, this school is unsatisfactory. Communication between the school and families is poor, inconsistent and often confusing. The administration is unprofessional and unskilled beyond the purely academic realm of Montessori education, which is surprising given the longevity of this school. Their actions are not in keeping with their mission statement and they do not honor diversity and the whole child. I would highly recommend that parents think twice before choosing this school for their children

My children (preschool and second grade) love MMS and so do I. As a Montessori certified school and training center, you know you are getting the real deal. Students receive individuvalized attention and at the elementary level daily and weekly work plans that are individualized. To address the mixed age complaint of a previous post, it is correct that most of the classrooms do not have the true Montessori 3 year age span. Preschool classrooms are ages 3 - 4 or 4 - 6. The elementary rooms also cover two year ranges, K-1, 1-2, etc. Children have the opportunity to be both the young ones who learn from the older children and later an older mentor to younger children. Another complaint I read in a couple of reviews was that few parents thought individualization was lacking and there was an overabundance of worksheets. My only thought is that perhaps they did not realize that the other chidren were on completely different places in their phonics work books or that the worksheets/ workbooks are extenstions of Montessori lessons children receive. The written work reflects the hands-on work. My children are challenged yet confident because they are met at their developmental level.

We LOVE this school! The Montessori classroom really works for children and entices their natural curiosity. Our child has been here for 3 years and is THRIVING. He is happy about going to school each day. He is so motivated to learn, and loves the academic environment where his ability, not his age dictates the work. The teachers are warm, caring people who we know have our child s best interest at heart. They partner with us every step of the way, allowing our child to progress at a rate that works for him. The program is not cookie cutter where one size fits all. Rather, the teachers are so aware of where each child is academically, emotionally, and present new information at the right time. We know what is happening in the classroom and see work product sent home that demonstrates what our child is learning. Our child has become a self-starter, and we see that cross over at home as he accomplishes his daily tasks. I have been in many other schools and have witnessed classroom chaos and difficult environments you will not find that here! It is peaceful, and a place where children are respected and valued. Great environment, loving instruction, happy child!

I still regret that I ever sent my child to this school. The teacher's attitudes were hurtful, they want little soldiers not happy children. All they care about is how well your child can perform for them and don't want to do anything different from how a latchkey child can learn. The work was not individualized, but basically all the same worksheets and assignments, students could just choose to do them at different parts of the day. We left a few years ago and my child now loves the new school and tells me how fun it is. My child still asks me, "why did you ever make me go there?"

We are so happy with our overall experience with MMS. Our daughter started MMS at a young 3 year old and from the first day of school I have felt completely comfortable leaving her in this environment every day. We have been at the school for three years and have found the teachers to be nurturing, supportive and highly competent. My daughter loves going to school and we are amazed at what she is learning. I have volunteered in the classroom and overall the children are very respectful and well mannered as well as inquisitive, bright and fun. From our first visit, we just knew in our gut that this was the right place for our daughter and I have heard that same comment from many other parents.

MMS has far exceeded my expectations. It prepares children to be independent learners and critical thinkers. The cosmic curriculum gives them a deeper understanding of the world we live in. Besides the strong academic accomplishments the school also holds high standards in social behavior. Children are very respectful, well mannered and happy!!!! I visited several schools before enrolling my children here, it was not a close call. It was an easy decision.

I was surprised to read the comments in the previous school review! My children have been in this school for 10 years, pre-school through 6th grade, and it has been amazing! Every classroom has an appropriate age range, a good teacher/child ratio, and provides individualized, hands-on learning. The teachers encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. Every child is working at their own skill level and at their own pace. The teachers are totally in tune with the needs of every child, not just academically, but socially, too. The school has an atmosphere of respect between students, teachers, and administrators. I highly recommend this school!

Montessori is wonderful when properly executed. One would assume that a school with AMS accred. would excel. Unfort. that is not the case. Pre-K programs are not a true 3-6 mix making a classroom of 30+ with maybe one 3 yr old and one 5 yr old but mostly 4 yr olds. It quickly deteriorates more in elementary. Innovation is discouraged as disruptive. Questions are not encouraged (and often go unanswered). Children's skill levels have been severely misevaluated. It seems like the teachers don t really know the children they teach. Most of them get the same lesson and follow the same path and the teachers are not able to follow the child's interest. Many parents have pulled their children out. Although the school is academic and your children will learn a lot there is a lack of respect between teachers/students and students/students. My kids came home completely disrespectful and they knew they were not respected at school. They even picked up on how relieved the teachers seemed when school was out for the day. Comm. with parents is problematic. There are plenty of fund-raising requests, but the workings of the administration are very secretive. I would NOT recommend this school.

I was a student at MME for almost ten years, and though my experience in the secondary program was unpleasant, this school STILL deserves a five star rating because that's just how amazing my Pre-k through 6th grade years were there. The programs are very rigorous but completely doable for the students of Montessori. Students really cared about submitting quality work, teachers really cared about providing everything they possibly could, and parents really cared about their children getting a good education. Montessori was not my school which I reluctantly went to for 8 hours a day, each day counting down the hours until dismissal. No, Montessori was my second home. I could describe every inch of the school if need be, and write a book about each of my classmates. The friends I made at Montessori are still to this day, the most wonderful people I know. I could go on and on about how highly I recommend this school. Sending me there was definitely one of the best decisions my parents could've made for me. Being part of the MME family was truly, truly a blessing.

I can't say enough wonderful things about MME/MMS. Our children went here from preschool through 7th grade. The only reason they didn't continue is that they wanted a bigger social experience. We would have had them complete 8th grade if it was solely up to my husband and me. The school prepared them well both academically and socially. The Math program allowed our children to take Algebra in 7th grade and they are now doing very well in 8th grade Geometry. The History program was excellent and continues to be one of our children's favorite subjects. And the Debate program improved their confidence in public speaking tremendously. Since this is a small school there are some subjects they don't have the ability to teach but everything they do is done extremely well. What is most wonderful about this school is that they taught our kids to learn. They know what is expected of them and they do it. If they don't understand something or need some help they ask us or their teachers. They recognize that learning in school can be fun but it is up to them to make it happen. This school taught them to be independent and responsible, what more can you ask for.

My daughter has been a student at this school for 3 years. She started in Pre-K. I chose this school after looking at many Montessori schools in San Diego as I thought it provided a structured, peaceful learning environment. My child is being taught to think for herself, rather than being taught WHAT to think. She is stimulated but not overwhelmed. She is learning to take care of the environment. The school does have wonderful, caring teachers. I believe they really care for the children. Montessori philosophy is quite different from public school teaching and I wish all children could be taught this way. It's a great school! I highly recommend it to anyone looking to raise an intelligent, self directed, kind child.

My son is thriving here. I love the low student teacher ratio. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants their child to reach their potential for learning. They are exposed to so much!
