Horrible school I have no idea how they’re even accredited. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE. They are extremely unorganized and lied about programs and classes they offered it seemed like just to get me to enroll my child. If you want your kids getting into a good college after high school, this is not the place for them. Extremely dissatisfied with their staff.

I was originally advised that my son could repeat the grade due to the more rigorous academic standards at the new school we transferred to. I enrolled him in this school back in April and just received a call on July 25th informing me that he can no longer repeat.

All this time, I was told the school would support him and that it was a strong program to help students catch up. I’m extremely disappointed that Maria Hiuser only provided me with this information today. It feels like a complete waste of time, especially after all the forms I completed and the personal information I submitted before enrolling.

While I have learned a lot from this school, I’ve also had several frustrating experiences that make it difficult to fully recommend. One of the biggest problems is how often school-wide meetings interfere with our actual learning time. For example, today my ELA class was canceled entirely due to yet another school meeting. This isn’t a one time thing it happens more often than it should. Since this is an online school, our time in live classes is already limited and valuable. Every class counts. So when the school decides to replace instructional time with meetings, it feels like they’re taking away our chance to learn and succeed. It’s especially upsetting when there’s no real benefit for students in those meetings. They often feel unnecessary, repetitive, or like they’re meant more for the staff than for us. I understand that staff may need to discuss important topics or handle administrative responsibilities, but those tasks shouldn’t come at the cost of student learning. There has to be a better balance. Education should always come first, and right now, it doesn’t feel like that’s the priority. If the school wants to improve, they need to reconsider how they schedule meetings and start putting students’ learning time ahead of everything else.

In my experience this was a great option previous to cavakings my daughter was attending public school my daughter is in 8th grade, and lets be honest at this age it could be very tough for some kids to keep the good work due to everything around them weather it could be from bullying to falling into the wrong crowd fights and so much more, i really do and will keep on advocating for programs like this to keep on thriving we need more programs like this for our children, no one deserves to feel uncomfortable and miserable in a place where you are suppose to be learning.

I'm super happy to have chosen CAVA for my 3rd grader. We love the curriculum and access to the digital library (Epic) for kids that offers a plethora of books.

We love this online version of public school more than the local public school because of the flexibility, curriculum, and resources. Most importantly, our homeroom teacher, Ms. Lisa Marie Rountree.

My 3rd grader never stops praising how super kind, friendly and amazing she is in teaching. She comes up with fun ways of teaching everyday, which I'm sure keeps the children engaged and focused. We love the positive affirmations song played first thing everyday in the morning.

My kid would choose Ms. Rountree over any teacher she had ever been taught till now. I believe it's the teachers who contribute to the major part of the success of any school and I'm sure CAVA is lucky to have found a treasure like her. Happy parent and child here. Best wishes, CAVA!

I attended this school from 1st grade through 10th grade and I left to enroll in a different online school for my junior (current) year. Especially being nearly a year removed from this school, I have a host of critiques. I'll focus on high school experience, but middle school was very uncomprehensive.

Not a lot of AP options and they restrict your classes a lot in freshman year which can heavily inconvenience you if you switch schools. Some of my teachers were unfair in their grading and wouldn't follow the rubric. I was given a zero for not fully analyzing something in a singular paragraph but didn't get any points for the grammar, citation, identifying themes, etc. I had several rough drafts graded as if they were finalized essays. The curriculum was really basic, especially in English and I don't think I learned anything from 6th-10th besides story structure. If you don't have good reading comprehension, you won't learn it, and a lot of my classmates really struggled with reading. The math curriculum was pretty solid. Science was hit or miss but the science teachers tended to be great.

There was one unique situation I'd like to mention. The school was always cagey about students sharing contact info with each other which made it hard to get to know your classmates. But they introduced a permission form that allowed students to get parental approval, allowing them to share contact info with each other. Me and my mom signed this and it was explained to us as simply a permission form. However, I got an email in 9th from another freshman with a ton of other freshman CC'd on it trying to start a discord server. No problem with the discord idea, but I had no idea how this person got my email. Apparently, when you completed the form, they put your name and whatever contact info you put in the form on a huge spreadsheet that was available to any student. I didn't even know about this, so I joined the discord to see how they got my info without being confrontational in case they lied and apparently it wasn't even the student's fault, they had full access to it given by school staff. I got a link to this list which a bunch of people already had and it had my email, name, and grade on it. I don't know why I never got this list if that was the purpose of the form but I had a few classmates in a group chat for a group project and none of them knew about it either. Emailed the principal, no action taken.

Essentially, I wouldn't recommend.

I'm a senior graduating in a few months. I have attended CAVA for the better part of my high school. (3.5 Years).

I believe there is something going on with administration behind the scenes at CAVA. I don't know if its low pay, toxic work environment, overwork, or something else. Maybe it's just the type of teachers who choose to work virtually. Personally, I have had very, very few teachers who bring positive energy to the "classroom." It seems as if most of the teachers don't want to be there. In my first year, I actually had a teacher quit within a month of work. As a student, I receive many emails that seem supportive, until I see that they are another one of many automated messages. In my high school experience, I have never been personally reached out to by a teacher other than my counselor and homeroom teacher.

Contrary to what CAVA may boast, the classrooms are dead. Students participate in chat, but usually just enough to drown out the cricket noises. There are no cameras. Even if there were- the platform prevents you from seeing your entire class in gallery view. There is very little support from admin and teachers in the school- "BUT YOURE EXPECTED TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY." I also expect a school to have basic, navigable support and guidance system. I often felt I was lacking learning opportunities that I may have otherwise had in a real school.

Overall, I cannot recommend CAVA to high schoolers. Understand you *will* miss out on essential high school experiences. You will make few friends, if any. Social interaction is an ESSENTIAL part of HS education, and CAVA lacks it. If you think you are an exception, so did I. I am fortunate enough to have a working PC, phone, school laptops, a supportive family, and exceptional computer literacy. Despite this I still found myself fighting regret. I watched my friends through their in person high schools and their homecoming, proms, and events as I clicked my mouse; 4:00PM. Submit. Repeat. Note that I am quite an above average student as well... viewing statistics, few students actually go through the complete course work. By my final year, I found myself struggling to keep myself sane. My grades did start falling to a point where my homeroom advisor actually asked my parents what was wrong.
I will finish my high school here, and I plan to put CAVA behind me as I go on to college. But, to incoming High schoolers, and my fellow teens...

Please be careful. Online School is not for the faint-hearted.

I am very pleased with my child’s experience at CAVA-LA. She has good communication with most of her teachers. She has taken advantage of AP classes and honors classes, and feels she is challenged enough. Her counselor and principal are great. I gave a review today because I noticed no one had given one in quite a while. My family is very pleased with this school.

Absolutely horrible it was hard to contact anyone at this school or even learn anything. The teacher would get ticked off when I’d ask them a question about the work and most of the time would ignore me. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to Thai place unless they like to feel like their constantly drowning with work that has nothing to do with what their learning.

My son and I have had nothing but good experiences with CAVA. Teachers and other students are so fun and unique. My son can do work at his own pace and is free to fidget, move around, take his time eating, take bathroom breaks and attend any appointments he may have without having to write up an excuse. I love that he is learning music and foreign language at a low grade level, and there is a strong emphasis on STEAM topics which he is passionate about. Ultimately it is a lot of work and a parent or learning coach does need to dedicate themselves 100% as well as the child, but this has been the best option for my sons schooling & we are so happy to be a part of it.

We love CAVA and our community day @Downey with the faculty, students and parents is the best experience compared to the one I've had with standard LAUSD with my eldest. My second daughter is about to begin kindergarten and my oldest daughter the third grade. We have been very blessed with Mrs Scarbrough & Mrs Ordonez for teachers. I'm so very proud we chose CAVA for schooling our family and look forward to when my youngest boy begins school. Having all three of them in CAVA and supported by such a wonderful faculty is amazing

Based on our students achievements,we are very proud supporters of California Virtual Academy's curriculum and support it in any way possible.

Our student has attended kindergarten 2015/2016 and 1st Grade 1016/2017. California Virtual Academy has online class connect sessions that allow the students to directly interact with the teacher and other students.

The teachers are experienced and keep everything well organized for both the student and parent.

California Virtual Academy provides everything needed, an excellent new computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard, headphone and microphone, many textbooks, crayons, highlighters, age appropriate learning tools, plastic shapes (triangle, square, circle, rectangle, cylinder etc.) all kinds of supplies, erasable white board and colorful markers/eraser. art supplies, music supplies, class learning guides for the parents for each class.

The kindergarten students are all a little bumpy with keyboard and mouse at first but they catch on really quick and learn what is expected, and become disciplined learners.

California Virtual Academy provides a turn key situation for both the student and parent as well as one on one guidance and many many online tutorials for the parent to keep their student on track throughout the year.

The offline courses require intensive parental involvement for the student to be successful. Without extensive parental direct commitment and involvement, the student would most likely be better served in a regular classroom. California Virtual Academy is not for every child and parent.

With intensive parental involvement, the student will exceed expectations and very possibly perform above grade level.

Our student upon completion of kindergarten was reading and comprehending on a high second grade level and similar with math. At the completion of 1st grade she is reading and comprehending at high 3rd grade and math placement very similar.

The students are tested and evaluated at the beginning of the class year, at the end of each quarter and again at the end of the school year. The tests are very rigorous.

It's one of the most rewarding experiences as a parent to participate and watch first hand your child's learning and development.

Our only involvement with CAVA is on a student teacher basis, we are not in any way connected any other way.

Love this school! my son is in 4th grade and has been enrolled since kindergarten. The teachers are involved and show care and compassion toward student learning. They are there for you if needed, they even give you their cell number you are able to text or call whenever needed. Staff overall is very involved and dedicated to the student's success.

We've been using CAVA for 6 years and I thought it was great when we started in Kindergarten and I still think it's great. The curriculum is advanced and that's what I love about it. It is true that the individualized learning program is not really individualized. It really is just a list of classes they want you to get done within a certain amount of time. It is a rigorous program and not for anyone who has trouble keeping up. I will review CAVA again once we make it to High School. The Elementary program is great! As for the teachers, some are better than others, but isn't that true at any school. Also, I am in control of my child's education. I don't depend on the teacher to hold my hand. This program is definitely for an organized person. If you aren't willing to take control of your child's education this is not the program for you. The teachers are there to help, not to do everything for you. I highly recommend CAVA.

My son is in the 9th grade. Transferring from a very difficult private jr. high. We have found the format to be excellent. He gets his class work and homework done in about 4 hours per day. His teachers are very receptive to his emails, usually answered within a few hours or the latest the next day. The overall website format could be a little more user friendly but my son is amazing at figuring out this kind of thing so he picked it up right away. It looks as though they are modifying the interface from previous years and I'm sure with time they will continue to update it. So far so good.

I can only re-state what so many others have said. I have used CAVA and other k12 virtual schools on and off since 2007. When we began, we loved it. Our 'teacher' was helpful, honest, responsive and friendly. The curriculum was literature-based, challenging and intellectual. We loved everything about it. But as the school has grown the quality of their staff and teachers has really taken a hit. Furthermore, they have added many tangential requirements that are included in the child's grade. Most of these are aimed at state test preparation. The teachers are absent (ours lives 2 hours away and only bothered to meet with us once). Although we submitted required samples (via mail because she can't be bothered to meet in person) she claimed we didn't and gave my children terrible grades despite what she called their 'tremendous' progress in their required work. That said, if you need a response to YOUR question or need assistance for YOUR student, don't expect to hear from CAVA. I've had text messages, phone calls and emails go unanswered for days or even weeks. I was given 14 hour notice to have my student at state testing. Is the curriculum excellent? Yes. But I wish I had simply purchased it for our own use and cut out the bloated bureaucracy at CAVA. No amount of money is worth what I've put my children through. I can't tell you how much I'd pay to not have seen the looks on my kids' faces when they saw those arbitrary, unfair grades.

Like previous comments on this thread, CAVA presents themselves as a public school that can offer individualized learning plans for each student. However, that is all there is, an advertisement. When we started with CAVA four years ago, I loved it. The program was flexible, the teacher was there for us, gave us suggestions when we were struggling with subjects, and patient when my son was behind on some subjects. In fact during our first year when my son was struggling to finish art and science he was allowed to finish those subjects in the summer. Each child learns different subjects at different pace and I was so happy that a school finally understood that. They didn't force or expect children to fit into one mold. Fast forward four years later and I don't know what happen to CAVA. The curriculum is grueling and advance for its grade. In the beginning of the semester they send you an "individualized learning plan", only to realize its not very individual. All it is really are list of topics that they kids needs to finish by the end of the semester so they can earn their grade. There is nothing individualized about it. And if your child does not finish those topics and struggling with the subject, tough luck. He/she will earn an F and the teacher don't really care. Furthermore, if you miss just two days worth of attendance or miss the date on sending the sample work, you receive a phone call and an email right away until you correct the matter. But, and this is a big but, if you have a question for them, needed a response regarding classes, or have an issue with a subject your child is struggling with, don't expect a prompt response. It can take weeks before it is answered and by then its useless information. And when they do respond to your email sometimes they don't even address your questions. Highly annoying. So if your child is struggling at brick and mortar and you think this is a better option for your child, you better be ready to put in 10-12 hour days. This is fine if you don't have other children in the house, don't need to make dinner, do any household chores or have a life. On a brighter note, the curriculum rivals the best public schools in my area who has API of 900's or even better. Also K12 company has excellent customer service and tech support. Its the academic (i.e. teachers and administrators) is what prompted us to leave CAVA.

The school is advertised as an alternative to public schooling with individualized learning plans for struggling students. What they DO NOT tell you is that there is NO individualization of their extremely advanced curriculum, and if you have a child that is struggling be prepared for an even bigger struggle. The curriculum is the same for every student, and is extremely advanced compared to standard public schooling. The daily work is a minimum of 8-10 hours a day, so it is also not possible to do schooling on your own time. My child is now having to repeat her grade back in a public school because they didn't teach her any of the foundational skills to thrive in future years. I am highly disappointed in CAVA.

CAVA @ Los Angeles has been a great experience for my son and our family. It does take a little getting used to at first but it's fairly easy to get help and feedback. My son is in his third year at CAVA, and the change in him has been remarkable. He used to hate school because it moved too slow for him and took all day. Now, he's excited to learn because the classes move at his pace.

This school is overrated! Do NOT waste your time. Find another online school. Do your research to prevent a horrible semester of...well read on. I am sure they might have one or two great teachers however, our experience has been with an incompetent, arrogant poor excuse of an educator. CAVA backs their co-workers no matter what. They do not play fair when it comes to taking responsibility for their actions and they are very catty. School operates with 90% female staff. They take more than a month to request school records which prompts children being marked truant at their old schools. They are slow to resolve issues. And they gossip among each other a lot about any issue that you bring up against them which prompts for intimidation. They stick together. The curriculum is for advanced students but not all students keep up at the same pace. If the students falls off track the school will harass you all around the clock because they have a "reputation" of to keep. Nothing they do is in the best interest of the students. Avoid them at all cost!

My offspring is going here since the beginning of the school year, and I'm impressed how great this school is. I do want to point out that homeschooling may not be suitable for everyone, but the school offers great tools and offers all materials needed for home schooling. I can highly reccomend this school.

CAVA is an excellent option for students. I am disappointed to read the misleading comments regarding college. I have two children who have graduated from CAVA-LA. One is enrolled at a private university in California. He was accepted to 6 of 7 colleges he applied to including U of O, CSU Chico and others. He is currently in his Junior year. My daughter left an excellent brick and mortar high school her senior year to graduate from CAVA and is now attending Sonoma State University. The downside of CAVA is if your child wants to go into Division I athletics. Do your research, take appropriate classes, begin to work freshman year to design college options...

My 6th grader finished his 1st year at CAVA middle school. I was very skeptical at first, but the program is great! You get all of the materials & help you need; the teachers are so nice, caring & helpful, & if you are a responsible parent, your child will learn. You do need to be organized. This is not for every student. It's a rigorous program -your child has to be responsible, honest & committed. I had 2 sons in public middle school & I can say that the lessons (esp Eng/Science) are at minimum at par with the public middle school in our nice area- a school state ranked at 9/10, w/API of 889 & CA Distinguished School. Furthermore, I rate the majority of CAVA's lessons, especially in History, Art & Math as above average compared to the aforementioned public school. My 6th grader learned so much academically, including leadership & was honored w/membership in National Junior Honor Society. Needless to say, I have allowed re-registration into CAVA for the next school year. This rating is only for Middle School. I hear that they still have a ways to go with respect to the High School, which is a shame. Nonetheless, my son is happy right now (and me too!) & bored no more w/school.

What a fantastic experience! After trying several different Independent Study options, CAVA was by far the best. Excellent curriculum, caring and helpful teachers and great online platform. I only wish I found the program sooner. Mrs. Villalobos is the best.

Cava in the last year has changed. The sixth grade curriculum is awful and they do not give the learning coaches (parents) the answers for tests so if child gets it wrong you do not even know what the correct answer is. The teacher should have the answers! Science is a joke, no text book, and the unit tests are treacherous (especially when you don't have answers as a parent). It was great but no longer. The management and leadership has dwindled also.

CAVA @ Los Angeles is fantastic for 4th-8th grade. Younger kids would benefit from interaction & CAVA HS program has issues. That said, I wish I found it sooner. Son had 1st grade public & 2nd-6th in small private. I was worried his education suffered. I refused the idea of public middle school so gave CAVA a try. WOW! It was perfect. If focused on a subject, he stayed on it as long as he wanted. Here's where learning is different & knowledge is retained. He's strong in English so tested out of most of the work & concentrated on what he didn't. This keeps a child from getting bored, no needless repetition. Fly over what you know & more time for what needs to work on. The Scantron testing is great to see where help is needed & what the kid mastered allowing a more individualized program. I knew nothing about my son educationally until CAVA. No it's not for everyone & he DID NOT DO High School w/ CAVA because hated the mandatory online "group" classes. He went to HS for a year & at 15 to college. I think CAVA really gave him a chance to excel & me a chance to see he was learning. Now considering 4th grader with IEP. COMMON CORE next year in public? NO WAY

CAVA--San Joaquin. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS HIGH SCHOOL. This "school" does not inform parents upon enrollment that their child's courses will not get them into California state universities. We moved to CA from the east coast two months ago, enrolled our child in CAVA, and just discovered these requirements, on our own. We are now removing our child and enrolling in another school. And though our child has spent time earning all A's and A+'s at CAVA, our child now will start the year over so as to remove these useless classes from our child's transcript. If this school is representative of California's public schools, the system is a joke.

CAVA saved my life. My kids used to attend a school with a very high API (940's). The teachers and administrators would bully my kids over ridiculous policies (like a dress code for 6-year olds) even though they earned straight A's! After we switched to CAVA, we can sleep until 10:00, my kids have fun, gain interest in so many different areas. My older one's math is even better than when she was in regular school because we are one-on-one, and i get to explain any questions she may have. The curriculum is excellent, and my kids (ages 8 and 10) learn Science, History, Art and Foreign Language in addition to Math and English. Many schools with high API's are unable to offer such a variety of coursework due to their focus on Math and English.They also provide materials to do science experiments at home, while many brick and mortar schools do not have the capacity to allow kids such hands on activities. One school we attended took a field trip to COSTCO and charged $5 (really.) Our field trips are to museums, zoos, wilderness areas, and observatories. It takes a lot of work to complete each year, and we make up every day we miss and often work on "vacation" days to do so.

I am very happy with CAVA. Although the curriculum is very rigorous, it still allows my student to work at his own pace. We can pick and choose how long to spend on a particular subject. I have had great teacher support and learning coach trainings.This program allows the flexibility for my son to focus on sports. The one on one mentoring has been exactly what my son needed. Homeschooling is not easy, but the rewards outweigh the challenges.

It's only been a month since I enrolled my son in CAVA and I keep thinking why didn't I do this sooner! My son was in a private school struggling. I am so impressed with the curriculum, the books and materials. Although, the curriculum is more advanced than what my son was doing at the private school, we can do it at his pace. The schedule is flexible and we get more work done than when he was in a traditional classroom setting. I love our homeroom teacher. Whenever I have a question, she responds immediately. I highly recommend this program!

I have been repeatedly disappointed by some of the administrators and teachers at this school. It is very difficult to get an administrator to respond to an issue. When they do respond, the attitude is that of apathy. Your child is just a number so they can obtain government funding to continue on. I dread having any contact with the administration because you get shoved off to someone who has absolutely no idea what they are doing and will not take the time to provide you with the resource you need for help or the answer to your question. In fact, it takes an act of GOD to get your home address changed - a seemingly simple task. Apparently, not so much. Can't even get that lady to respond to my emails. Very unprofessional. My son does have a couple of amazing teachers. However, his current AP US History teacher could not be worse. He is horribly negative. I'm appalled he is allowed to continue teaching. This high school is not doing well with California state standards and is below average three years in a row. If you want to avoid headaches and actually want a decent education where your child can be inspired, go elsewhere!

My son was enrolled in a public school. He got A's and B's and one of my friends recommended cava to me and said it was an excellent program. ITS NOT . I enrolled my son (in the 10th Grade) he didn't start off fine. Cava is very unorganized. It is very hard to contact the teachers, understand the concepts and so on. Also for PE there isn;t much for him to do. My son was in football before CAVA and now what is he going to do? Run around in circles in the backyard? I can't afford to send him into a ymca league or anything like that. Their PE system is horrible. My son would get headaches from looking at the computer screen all day. He didn't get the help he needed and the teachers are very unreachable. My son got C's and D's that year and I was very disappointed. And I have to blame CAVA I really do not recommend this school to anyone and I regret ever enrolling my son into it. CAVA doesn't teach very well, has a poor curriculum and not to mention their own textbooks are horrible, and the teachers are very unreachable. I rate this a 1 out of 10 for me. That one year at CAVA will affect my son's life forever. He may not get into a college because of those grades at CAVA.

We've been in CAVA for years now. We absolutely love it. There has a been a problem with my youngest not being able to read as fast as others at this age (grade 2), we are going to really accelerate over the summer with library materials and incentives. Everything else has been outstanding and we hope to continue in this environment for as long as possible.

I like the curriculum and the online model. Unfortunately, though, CAVA represents itself as a college preparatory high school even though the majority of its high school courses are not on the University of California's a-g list of accepted courses. That means that kids graduating from CAVA will not likely be accepted at any UC (or Cal State) College.

We can not say enough great things about CAVA/K12. I wish i would have put my older 2 kids in it when they needed the one on one help, our 'home teacher' is awesome, if we have any questions, she's there. I've been able to see the damage that PUSD has done to my child and make positive adjustments. So sad that it has to come to this, and feel terrible for those who don't have the option of homeschooling due to work, but we are blessed to have such a wonderful community of parents/teachers who know and care about our children.
