I have three kids who went through VMMS and they all had different but good experiences.

The structure is exactly why I sent my kids there. The rules about dress code and no phones are the boundaries that kids this age need. It seems silly to be mad at the expectations, no one is exempt. It’s a school of choice with a waitlist. Families that don’t like it should leave to make space for those that want to actually participate in the program.

Also know that this is a public middle school. There is no school that doesn’t have challenging behaviors or tough teachers. That’s why I talked to my kids about these things they reported home so they can know to do better and to get help if needed. High school is much more challenging. And it’s life to be around environments that don’t always fit what you want or expect.

My kids learned how to be handle difficult assignments, time management, and how to talk to their teachers if they need help. Ask any high school teacher in the district, their best students came from VMMS. My kid will be going to college in the fall with a scholarship and that’s because of the foundation at Vista Magnet. If you get in, consider yourself lucky!

Honestly, this school used to be better, but now it feels very authoritarian and prison like. The teachers and the admin here like to focus on all the micro behaviors and look the other way when it comes to the big behavioral issues this school faces. For example, they discipline kids for forgetting their required lanyard, or not wearing a collared or spirit t-shirt, or having a cell phone in their pocket (not even using it), or forgetting to charge a Chromebook. But then there is constantly fighting, drug use, and smoking issues, as well as large-scale bullying that they can not seem to get a handle on. The school has too many kids to effectively supervise during lunch (all 3 grades at once). This campus was once a high school, so it is large, and there are a lot of hiding places for kids to do bad things. It is not a safe place for children. My daughter gets bullied almost every single day for a variety of reasons related to her appearance, and I am talking about how her eyelashes look or what sweatpants she is wearing that day kind of bullying. There are a lot of wanna be gang member kids at this school who just try to intimidate the kids who are not. If you send your kid here they will need to grow up very quickly. The teachers are just mean and clearly hate the kids, their job, and their lives. They make comments to the kids about how they will never graduate high school or get a job one day if they don't turn in all their assignments, etc. It is middle school science for godsakes! This is just untrue and another form of bullying that exists here. The teachers do not actually try to teach the kids by getting them excited about education; they just bully them into completing tedious assignments so that they can quantify how well they did their job. I am literally counting down the days until I can get my daughter out of this school.

I am a current 7th grader at this school, and here is what I have to say about it. If your child is falling behind or below level, absolutely send them here. If your child is at level or above level, do not send them here. Sure, the school is great for growth in kids that are behind, but what about the kids that are on level or above? On greatschools, it says it has a gifted and talented program, it does not. The kids that are above level have to be with kids that are below level, so they have to be at their level. We have to have a super strict dress code, no electives, and math, science, and “LLIS” for 6/7 of the hours we are there. If you are any person who is at or above level, there are remotely no perks to going to this school. Not even to mention the grading, that is a whole thing. They have a number rubric, instead of a letter rubric. It is very confusing because it is a 1-8 scale, but an 8 is super hard to get because it is the next grade level up so you should be happy with a 4 because that is a good grade. Now, that may seem like nothing, but it gets even worse. In 7th grade, there is not grading rubric. So, you have to be graded off of a 8th grade rubric. For a lot of students, 7th grade is a very hard year mentally & academically. When you take these kids who already are having a hard time, and telling them that the 8 you got last year is actually a 4 this year, is very hard, especially for any kid who really cares about their grades. Not only this, we have virtually no way to find people with your interests (like you would in electives) except if you go before or after school. I come every day at 7:45 just so I can try to connect with other people. Not to mention lunch. Lunch has ALL 900 KIDS at the same time. The lunch line takes upwards of 20 minutes of our 40 minute lunchtime, but there are only enough tables for about 500 kids. Because of this, I have to sprint to the lunch area just to have a place to eat. Also, on rainy days, they still make us eat outside in the rain whilst you are getting wet. Also, you only get 4 minutes of passing period. The other magnet middle school, VIDA get 6 minutes. 4 minutes is not nearly enough, so I have to sprint to each class every day. Also, there is this program for really bad kids, but they get to be in our classes but also run loose around campus. My classes have been disrupted over 10 times by these kids and I have contacted administrators multiple times and nothing is being done. Thank you.

As a current 7th grader at Vista Magnet Middle School, I feel like it’s time someone spoke up about what it’s really like to be a student here. Middle school is supposed to be a place where we learn, grow, and feel safe—but that’s not what many of us experience. From the teachers and staff to the facilities and overall environment, Vista Magnet has a lot of problems that need to be addressed.

Let’s start with the teachers. Some of them are kind and helpful, but too many seem like they don’t want to be here. They rush through lessons, ignore questions, and act annoyed when students need help. It’s hard to stay focused when the person teaching you doesn’t seem to care. I’ve had teachers who talk down to students or use sarcasm instead of support, which just makes learning more stressful.

One of the biggest problems is the lack of discipline and safety. There are students smoking on campus—yes, even 6th graders. It’s not just vaping either. I’ve seen kids sneak off during lunch or after school to smoke behind buildings or near the bathrooms. Teachers and staff know it’s happening, but they rarely do anything about it. It’s disturbing and makes the school feel unsafe.

The school doesn’t take bullying seriously either. There are kids who get picked on every day, and when they report it, nothing changes. Sometimes the victims get in trouble instead of the bullies. It’s like the school would rather pretend everything’s fine than actually deal with the problems. That makes it hard to trust the adults here.

The discipline system is unfair and confusing. Some students get punished harshly for small things, while others get away with serious stuff like fighting or smoking. It feels random, and that makes students lose respect for the rules. If the school wants us to follow them, they need to be consistent.

In conclusion, Vista Magnet Middle School has serious problems that affect students’ safety, learning, and well-being. As a 7th grader, I want to do well and enjoy school—but that’s hard when the environment is so negative. I hope the school listens to students and starts making real changes, because we deserve better.

It's in the middle of Vista Village, so it has a good community. The teachers are very nice, and they take time to help certain individuals. Students often ask questions after class, and teachers will stay and have an animated discussion about it. Overall, very good school with good teachers and a sound learning environment. 8/10 would recommend.

I am a student and this school absolutely sucks, the teachers treat us like inmates at a prison, the staff are so mean (They would yell at you for NO REASON), and finally this school is so boring, seriously don't bring your child here, it isn't worth the emotional abuse, the mental abuse, and even the physically abuse (The students here punch each other like its a game).

The teachers are not respectful of the kids. My kids were taught that our yearly calendar for AC and BC does not mean Before Christ and After Christ but "Before Common Era" and "After Common Era" that's just made up nonsense. You can't rewrite history! That's just false. Students are told they do not need to stand up during Pledge of Allegence instead they can talk and socialize. Only a few students stand. They don't do book reports instead it's the "honor system" just tell teacher you read the book. No accountability but thats what the teacher told me. My kids do not know how to spell, read or write at Middle School Level. They are testing 2 grades below their age and the school said most of the students are testing several grades behind. I was told "Dont worry about it" What! That's a failure and they boost they are a IB school with most students testing below their grade.

Kids are stressed out at this school. Many teachers are rude to students. I ended up transferring my child out due to lack of support and causing too much stress in my child and family’s life.

The way the teachers treat the students is no different than the way they do in a prison. It is absolutely despicable. Not too long ago one of my kids got into an unwanted fight with another. All he did was defend himself. So my child got suspended for 4 weeks. When he came back, he told me that the other child didn’t get in nearly as much trouble as he did. The other only got lunch detention for a week! This school values injustice. It is totally corrupt and unfair.
Not even the dress code is safe from their wrath. Every child is forced to wear a collared shirt EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. No child at this age is going to have a week's worth of clothing as formal as that in their wardrobe! Not to mention, but you also have to wear a lanyard with an ID on it! Plus, if you lose either one of those, you have to pay $5 for a new one. Plus, the school makes everyone pay for Composition Books, Gym clothes, and even locks. The fact they do this when 73% of the families are low income is disgusting.
Another thing is that all of the students are stressed out. They have a project/test every single week! I can not count how many times my child got an emotional breakdown from the amount of work he has gotten. It is so easy to get behind. The teachers know about it too, but they don’t even attempt to try to fix it. It is so stressful, going to this school felt like a punishment rather than a gift.
For a school that “focuses on math, science, and technology.” They really do not care about technology. The way they have projects/notes online doesn’t help anyone. Plus, if you miss a single day in their horrible classrooms, too bad! You get to be confused with no help whatsoever! Their WiFi is horrendous. Not to mention, they don’t even have a computer class anymore! It got replaced with an art/ Spanish class. It is totally misleading.
The students are also taught unacceptable behaviors to be a good thing. My child complains every day about other students talking about gang activities and racial slurs. This is a middle school for god's sake. The teachers and staff don't attempt to change it either. The school is like a hivemind, infecting everyone there.
In conclusion, this is BY FAR the worst school I have EVER seen! I would have rather had my child not go to school at all than go here. If you want anyone you know to go through this, by all means send them here. If you have ANY COMMON SENSE at all, stay as far away from here as you can. Go to Maddison. Have a nice day.

Students are last at this school. Constantly nagged and are never given a voice. My child was stabbed with a pencil, when they defended themselves teacher told them to be quiet! My child won't speak up for fear of being yelled at. STUDENTS ARE LAST!!

As an observing looking for the Effective Teacher as described by Wong & Wong , professionals in the field of teaching and as mentors world wide, I observed a 6th grade class that met all the qualifications of an effective teacher that affects lives in a positive way. Just walking on to the campus, it became clear to me that the implicit curriculum was understood and embraced by the students. The atmosphere , the learning environment and the classrooms provided a safe, productive and enjoyable place in which to learn , excel and grow!!! I am very impressed!!!!!!! This is after visiting many many classrooms, and completing 45 hours of observations in various classrooms in the city of Vista, this school is my top choice. I only hope I will be fortunate enough to join their teaching staff some day in the near future!!!!! It is clear how and why this school has received so many awards.

My daughter has been attending this school for the last three months and I find the school to lack direction, teachers fail to follow school board direction in regards to homework assignments, and the amount of work placed on these kids to be staggering and absolutely unnecessary. I ask teachers at least twice weekly for information about class, homework, and receive no response. My daughter is working 60+ hours per week to just keep up with the homework load. The principal is new and tremendously overwhelmed. Throw new "common core" and this school is now the land of chaos. If you want your children to burn out, hate school, and change from loving kids to bleary eyed, over worked terrors, then by all means send them to VMMS.

Being a former student, I LOVED this school! It's been such a great help, the material in each subject are at a standard high school level. The programs they gave us to do our projects are much more better to use while giving presentations. As well as the teachers, they do an excellent job at helping the students to keep up the best they can as well as teach them in the best methods. Wish all schools had the wonderful staff that VMMS has. Not to mention the way how this all helps you later, having some background knowledge does really help you, especially in high school. For me, VMMS was the best choice that both my parents and I have made. Their clubs are also a great way to distract yourself from school. Not to mention the way they help prepare you at a high school level with methods to complete things such as homework, projects, notes and so much more. I just loved going there and I hope it stays that way for the future students that will have an amazing and outgoing set of 3 years. Also, having some other things that most schools don't have, VMMS is truly a school to must go when you have a chance. I actually wishing as still in 8th grade. Wish you luck VMMS!

Well, I'm a 6th grader in VMMS and it has been great!!!The environment is friendly and the teachers are really helpful! There are many clubs in this school such as math,engineering,art,yearbook and more!My teachers help me a lot!Like last time I was in a conflict with another student and our vice principal helped us solve it in a civilized way.Well I have many friends and good grades!I wish this review helps you choose a middle school wisely!;)

This school is amazing! the science department has a lot more supplies than most schools. Amazing teachers. Excellent math departments. One thing is that students do get more projects but because they are being prepared for high school and to get them ready for the California Standards Test (CST).This school also has a swimming unit for Physical Education (PE) which is something that most schools don't have. In conclusion I would recommend this school for any student who is willing to work hard for a good education.

This school is what you make of it. If you decide not to be a disciplined student, you won't be rewarded, as the program is demanding. If you get caught up in its flaws (not much choice for electives, "lack of individual expression"), you won't be able to properly appreciate the wonderful staff and advanced math courses. As an alumni, I have total appreciation for my experience there, having made great friends and received a wonderful education. If you want a curriculum surrounding the arts, go to VAPA. This is a science and mathematics-oriented school. The bottom line is that you will receive the best middle school education in VUSD here - if you are willing to work for it.

Vista Magnet is not for everyone. My son and his friends were happy to leave after three years at this school. The principal is very demanding and strict, the teachers are overworked and underpaid, and the support staff is stressed. The students don't have any choices for elective classes because all students take art and spanish classes for three consecutive years (boring!) This school doesn't even have a music program so students are not able to explore other options or be creative. One good thing about this school is their math department which prepares most students for advanced math classes. Unfortunately many math teachers leave this school every year. If your child likes math and science then this is the right school for him/her.

I just promoted after being here for the full 3 years and let me just say that I am glad to be leaving. More then glad. The office staff was more then mean, they were down right rude and distasteful. While most of the teachers were friendly and helpful, some were stress inducing and strict. Because of the stress of the end of the year required project called the capstone, I had about 3 emotional breakdowns the time period of a month. While I do admit that they prepared me better then other middle schools would have for high school and even college, I did not enjoy my time there. It's a technology school, yet they cut the digital arts program this year to put us through an art class. I was quite excited for the art class until I actually got there. They limit you, restrict your self expression and everyone's work looked the same. You had a week to do projects and only class time which meant you had to choose between good quality work and getting it in on time. The only reason I change was because I had made such good friends and didn't want to leave them and start over. If your into science, go here. If you like art, music and self expression, go somewhere. I suggest Madison.
