Balboa is special in that it doesn't have one extraordinary aspect: everything that they do they do beyond expectations. Gifted learners have unique needs and the faculty and staff are well trained and motivated to meet them. The whole-child approach that is the backbone of Balboa's mission makes Balboa a safe place for all children (called Scholars here) to thrive, not only academically but, socially and emotionally. Yes, there are fantastic programs like robotics, 3D printing, YMCA-coached PE, library, art, edible garden, clubs, music, and cross-grade buddies. Yes, test scores are high. But there are also mindfulness exercises with the PSW, classmate meet-ups, off-campus fieldtrips, Kindness and Earth week events, STEM and MATH night, and loads of other extras. I have also never seen parent participation anywhere like at Balboa. Parents are generous with time and resources. Kids and parents want to come to campus. It is a true community. I have experience with multiple local schools and I have been most impressed by Balboa Gifted Magnet.

My child has been going to Balboa for four years and it has been the best educational decision we could have made for him. The school just earned the #1 Elementary School in LAUSD for a reason. The principal, Mrs. Chun, the Vice Principal, Mr. Lopez, and the entire staff are incredible. They care so deeply about the scholars and the learning environment they have. There is not a single teacher I've ever heard another parent say we should hope to avoid getting the following year. And I've asked. The curriculum is rigorous and keeps these gifted kids challenged. They are engaged and happy. The enrichment offered after school has always been superb. The facilities and equipment available to the students is outstanding. Not to mention one of the most involved parent groups I've ever seen. The parent board is engaged and active, they support the school in a number of ways including community events, campus beautification, fundraising, etc. If you find yourself with the opportunity to send your scholar to Balboa, you should jump at the opportunity. I will miss being a part of the Balboa family, but not nearly as much as my kid will. Thank you for absolutely everything, Balboa!

This school has a caring and devoted Principal. The staff has all been wonderful and helpful. All the teachers care about the students' education and really works with the families to make sure their kids succeed. Balboa's curriculum is more advanced compared to other elementary schools and the teachers help the students enjoy learning in engaging ways.

I want to add my input for anyone considering Balboa Magnet. I love this school for my child. My child (who is now a 3rd grader with the super-awesome Mrs. Sherry) is thriving. He has opportunities to take enrichment classes like 3-D printing, drones, computer club, board game club, chess, among others. He gets to do take-home projects, and in class they really go in-depth on subject matter. He is learning cursive! They go on field trips to interesting places. I love all this for him. His teacher last year (the super-incredible Mrs. De Silva) set the bar so high. She is an incredible educator and works with passion and love for her students. I know all of the teachers at Balboa are wonderful and you see that in all of the interactions around campus. As parents, I know we are looking for a safe, supportive, fulfilling environment for our kids, and Balboa checks all of those boxes and more. Yes, there is homework, but that's true for any school and grade. Balboa educators really meet your scholar where they are and the teaching is more individualized than I ever could have imagined at a public school. Also shout-out to Ms. Franke! What an incredible asset for all of the scholars. If you're considering Balboa Magnet, come take a tour. See for yourself.

All around it exceeded expectations this year for us. We had searched and visited a lot of area schools and this was the standout. Very thoughtful approach to education and nurturing the kids. The teachers are engaged and seem to all love being here. A few families trek across the valley by some distance to attend and for good reason.

The teachers and staff are not only knowledgeable but also highly professional, consistently going above and beyond to support and inspire each child.

What truly sets this school apart is the exceptional level of parent engagement opportunities. From events to volunteer programs, there are countless ways for parents to stay involved and contribute to their child's education.

"An Extraordinary School Experience"

I am truly blessed and deeply grateful for the wonderful experience at Balboa Gifted. This incredible school is filled with educators and staff who dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to nurturing the growth, development, and social-emotional well-being of each student, while offering love, patience, and unwavering support to families. The teachers go above and beyond, challenging students with rich depth and complexity, helping them to become not only skilled learners but also thoughtful and critical thinkers.

The sense of community here is something truly special. From the exceptional Principal (Ms. Chun) to the amazing Magnet Coordinator (Mr. Lopez), who always makes time to listen to and support every parent, I am constantly amazed by the genuine care and attention we receive. And the office staff—so warm and welcoming—make you feel like you’re part of a close-knit family from the moment you step through the door.

It is an absolute privilege to be a part of such a nurturing, inspiring, and compassionate environment, where every child and family is valued

We are so thankful and blessed to be able to be a part of Balboa Magnet ES family! This school is dedicated to our students, with knowledge and experienced teachers, outstanding staff and a great environment to learn and develop! My son was the first one to attend the school, and I still have two daughters currently here. They love it here, and the teachers know how to cultivate their talents, so they can successfully become gifted or highly gifted students. This is an amazing start, and will help your children attend more gifted schools all the way to colleges and universities. Highly recommend!
Thank you educators and school staff!

Balboa Gifted/High Ability Magnet Elementary School is BY FAR, THE GREATEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in the San Fernando Valley! Between 2 kids, we've been at this school since 2018 and the teachers & staff are INCREDIBLE! And leading the way, is THE GREATEST PRINCIPAL IN THE HISTORY OF ALL PRINCIPALS, MS. CHUN! She exemplifies what a school Principal should be! She is supportive, she is friendly, she is inspirational, she is great with the Balboa scholars and most importantly, she is an outstanding leader! Ms. Chun's strong leadership is reenforced by the Magnet Coordinator, Mr. Lopez, who wins the award for PAYS MOST ATTENTION TO DETAIL! Mr. Lopez is AMAZING. He's constantly thinking ahead for new & exciting ways to keep the scholars interested in learning! These dynamic qualities from Ms. Chun & Mr. Lopez spread throughout the entire staff! Take a look at their website to find the school's pillars of character. Their motto is CHARACTER COUNTS; and the staff display those pillars of character on a daily basis.

If I had to select an area where the school can improve, I'd say that it's with their carpool drop-off/pick-up. If families worked together more with the carpool procedure, that would solve most of the issues (but potentially ALL of the issues). In the meantime, I'm sure the school is using what resources they have to manage this element of the school day.

Aside from the school's carpool, Balboa Gifted/High Ability Magnet Elementary really is the top of the line! If you care about your scholar's academic future, you will make a very wise decision to apply to this school. Certainly do your homework and compare with other schools in the area, but be sure to take a tour of Balboa with Ms. Chun and/or Mr. Lopez. Then you'll understand why BALBOA IS THE PREMIERE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!

We just started at this school in the fall and we love it. The community is welcoming and they encourage classroom and grade level events with peers. The PTA is actively involved and engaged. The kids are learning and discovering the world around them at a rapid pace. Classroom size is reasonable (for LAUSD) and they even have a TA that helps. There is a school psychologist that works with the kids. The teacher is very accessible for questions. Plus sends pictures of in class activities, and sends assignments with plenty of notice so you can work with your child. Take a tour, see if this is the right place for your child.

My son graduated from Balboa in 2018. We had a very good experience and liked all of the teachers. Our son was there since 1st grade. Our son struggled in 1st and 2nd grade socially and had trouble keeping up. We talked to Mrs. Davenport and she helped us tremendously. She helped us get a IEP and explained everything. Her with the special education counselor made the school an enjoyable experience.

We were shocked at how incredibly helpful and supportive both the principal and the teachers were. They made so many accommodations, and we were in shot. Truly a special school.

Posted: November 7, 2019

Posted: November 7, 2019

The first time I saw the Mrs. Davenport (the former principal) about getting my daughter any extra help, her answer to me was "Sure we can help! Which other schools would you like us to transfer her to?" Not to mention when I put in the request to get the extra help or get her assessed for any learning disabilities, it took well over 2 months before getting an initial meeting. Which now I know is illegal, we should have gotten a meeting no later than 20 days after the initial note. Don't let the administration bully you away. At the end of the day, all they care about is tarnishing their precious score..NOT your child's education. GOOD LUCK!

This school was great for all three of my children, which all had different needs. All tested gifted in very different ways. Some times were more challenging, but I know it would have been worse elsewhere. Parents reading this need to understand this is a school for gifted children and the pace and methodology will reflect that. If your child hasn't been really accurately evaluated, and in turn, accurately recommended for this school, he/she will find it difficult. The pace is much faster and while there is less homework than other schools (speaking from experience), it is more challenging. If they are not up for it, it will feel like homework all the time with no free time. Having been at several schools, bullying here is by far the least and those seen as the smartest are more revered than shunned. The Boster/PTA is outstanding and second to none. PARTICIPATE and you will see why. The more we work together, the more richly rewarded the kids are. One PTA mtg attendance here is like 3 elsewhere. Much better participation. One thing to note, this school has the highest API score of any school because its entire student population is gifted, unlike other schools where its only partial. Having said that, there are more students at similar pace and understanding, leaving fewer kids behind and having them MORE than ready for junior high, even high school, as credited by my oldest, who is in high school.

My child is getting ready to graduate after being there since Grade 1. I can say that our experience here different greatly year to year depending on who his teacher was. For two years he had absolutely incredible teachers and for the rest he had terrible teachers. It just depends who you get. There is a lot of bullying that goes on at this school, a LOT of mean kids, and a lot of students who are loaners, who can't find friend groups and the staff does nothing to try to help these students. My child still hasn't made any friendships, unfortunately. Academics are great but as time has gone on, I've realized that isn't everything. I wish I chose a different school for my child and wasn't caught up on reputation.

With all the school shooting we often hear across the nation, I would think Balboa would take initiative action to not leave the "visitor sign-in" out in the public area where strangers can just walk in, grab a visitor sticker and freely walk in. What's funny is that the admin wouldn't even look up to see who just grabbed the visitor pass. They trust the parents too much that it's jeopardizing the safety of our students. Just IMHO.

I can't comment academically as my son hasn't been attending long, but they excel on being RUDE. I've been treated poorly several times now, and I'm growing quite tired of it. I am planning to remove my son because I can't stand to be spoken to like this from a school that blatantly asks for a thousand dollar donation before we even began the school term.

My son is in 2nd grade. This year's donation request is $350.00. I feel it's very reasonable since the school pays for PE, music, computer lab and science lab. Lasts year they also had art. I've never been pressured to donate and I know many parents don't but the quality of the teaching staff is great. I disagreed with the first day of school for the 1st graders because parents were told to leave their kids in the auditorium and then the kids were going to get tested. SURPRISE! But I see that there is a method to her madness. There were no tears by kids. The kids are treated with respect and given their independence. I've helped my kid with his project but it's always been his responsibility. If he does a poor job that's on him. So kids do DO their own projects if you stay out of it. The teachers here are ON POINT! Kids don't get away with slacking off. They are rewarded for good scholarly behavior and it's been great for his behavior at home also.

Balboa Magnet far exceeds any expectation of a great school! We love it! If you are looking for a place to send your gifted/high achieving student, you would be blessed to win the lottery and get into this amazing school! The teachers, staff and parents are committed to reaching the needs of these special students. The parent organization raises enough money through direct donations ($350 per student, in a soft ask) and FUNdraising events, to pay the full-time salaries of a Computer Lab Instructor, Vocal Music Teacher, P.E. Coach and Science Lab teacher. All these programs are currently not funded by LAUSD and missed at other neighborhood schools. These enrichment teachers then work in conjunction with the classroom teachers to take a basic grade level education to a deeper level. The teachers attend special gifted and talented continuing education and are passionate about their curriculum and students. Mrs. Davenport, the school principal, is an amazing communicator and has the respect and trust of all the teachers. My son is in 4th grade and every year has loved his teacher and looks forward to school and the classroom projects. If your child is an eager learner this is the place for you!

School cherry picks students based on three-questions on Choices brochure completed by prior school teacher. Test scores don't accurately reflect teacher/admin efforts. Parents do a lot of the sent home projects. In 9 years, I felt my concerns were NEVER addressed by teachers or admin. Agree with "brick wall" comment and 5/22 & 8/27 posts. No transparency. Lots of fundraisers. Annual donation request was $300 per child when we started at school. Now up to $1,000. Parents allowed to make monthly payments. Felt pressured to give. Donor's named published. Do your homework. There are other great area SAS/Magnet programs with responsive teachers and admins. If you are a parent who wants or expects concerns addressed or needs to feel heard, this place can leave you feeling frustrated and helpless. Ask around. Ask if teachers are required to do annual training to stay fresh and grow. Ask for SPECIFIC examples of how admin addresses discipline issues (bullying online and off). Ask how school notifies parents about issues (head lice) that can be costly/rampant/perennial/frustrating when parents are unaware. Ask about carpool safety. Nice office staff.

This school goes above and beyond expectations. We are thrilled to have our son there.

We had one incredible teacher at Balboa, but that teacher would be a star anywhere. If you are considering Balboa: 1) It's a "10" but the kids are gifted/high ability, so the score is skewed. Students are already 'brighter' than most, i.e., not an accurate reflection of teacher/admin efforts. 2) Teachers may or may not "challenge" your child. Each teacher is different, quality varies. GREATLY. 3) Balboa has over 750 students, four grade levels. If you meet with principal and magnet coordinator, they'll smile, but likely you won't get what you want. 4) Don't even think to request a specific teacher from administration. Again, almost 800 children here; you are talking to the wall. 6) If you and child's teacher are on different wavelengths, tough luck. (You don't like it? Leave, says magnet coord.) 7) If your child has social issues you are on your own. Forget about asking for socialization programs. The focus is competition, not empathy, and 'high academic achievement' is everyone's goal. 8) Playground is scary if your child is at 'psychomotor', recess or after school. Yard aides need to teach conflict resolution, supervision is wanting. Result: This school falls short.

This is an exceptional school. The kids work hard and are prepared for middle school. The parent volunteer is above and beyond. The teachers care for the children. Office staff is great too. I can't say enough about this school. My son has been there for 3 years now and he loves it so much!

Balboa Magnet is truly one of a kind. The administrators, teachers, parents, and students work together to create a school that operates in perfect harmony. Students are valued for their individuality, as well as for their unique and creative contributions to the school community. Lifelong learners are cultivated at Balboa thanks to the support of the families and staff. I love being a part of such a hard-working and loving team!

I loved Balboa. This school definitely helped me excel because of their high standards. I'm not saying middle school was a breeze, but I definitely did not struggle as much as the other kids. Thank you to all my teachers who made my elementary years amazing.

There's a reason that Balboa Maget has ranked number one among LAUSD elementary schools -- it has an excellent teaching staff that's supported by a wonderful principal and administrative team, as well as a very involved parents organization.

I am a student at balboa magnet and I'm in fifth grade. I have been going to this school for almost 5 years. I have loved it so far here. They challenge you while making everyday fun. For example, in fourth grade, you have pioneer day where you dress up like pioneers and learn about their daily life. The teachers always listen to you and get you ready for the next school year. I really reccommend this school.

The Balboa STAR Ed. after school program is the best enrichment and care program I've ever seen. The kids are happy and do not ever want to leave early. Every day is an amazing enrichment activity including science experiments, art of the Masters, ecology awareness and animal interaction, music (rockstar bands or musical theater), sports/athletics... Homework is completed and kids are full of excitement about the day's activities. I could not be happier!

I am having so much difficulties with my son's teacher. She only likes kids that do not cause any "issues". Kids get benched and punished there for every little reason. And in some cases they are not treated fairly. Some kids can misbehave and get away with it and some kids get noticed for every little thing that they have done wrong. My son got accepted this year. He is in second grade. His grades are high and he is working really hard to make it better. However, he is very energetic and talkative which is an issue for the teacher. The teacher doesn't want to deal with kids like this. She does not accept the fact that he is still a kid. She would not try to find the right approach to him. Instead, she suggested that he has a disorder and asked to take him to a specialist. My son has achieved so much in his learning and has never heard one positive feedback from the teacher whatsoever. But if he fails for once, the teacher would get him benched, send him to the office, and send me a letter pointing that she was right to think that he had a disorder. That brought so much and stress to may family and my son. He thinks he is not good enough for his teacher. This is really sad!
