I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible educational foundation my children have received at Beckford Charter. The welcoming environment for both parents and students, along with the cleanliness of the school, truly stands out. The activities and events are always fun and well-organized.

I am especially proud of my now middle schooler, who is excelling in writing to the point where his current English teacher has to provide him with alternative assignments. He has shown remarkable skills in areas such as character analysis and text evidence, among others.

Thank you once again to all the teachers and staff for their dedication and hard work. It has made a significant difference in our lives.

My kids have been going to this school for the past 15 years+ , my youngest was in 3rd grade last year and the parent support, activities and involvement was the most I've ever seen it (I don't believe other grades were as involved) Ie. 3rd grade held an end of year Field Day with Catered food from Gus's, time, energy, resources and attention to detail made the whole year so enjoyable and even playdates out of school/at the park were coordinated by multiple parents (often)

We've never had an issue with the administrators, PTA, Room Parents or principals and I'm sorry all of these parents commenting have had a poor experience because I cannot speak enough about how amazing the school has been for my kids through the years.

Any issues I've noticed in terms of 'bullying' and kids who were problematic have been addressed almost immediately and were not taken lightly by teachers, staff and the Principal.

The activities, extracurricular programs are starting to come back in full force as they were prior to the pandemic and the field trips as of late have been similar to field trips in the past. The PTA and administrators have worked diligently to provide a fun and dynamic learning experiences for both students and families alike.

Many families fight to be in this school and it's one of the best ones in the LAUSD, within this area. 10/10 recommend.

This 5th grade class has been bullied by the outgoing principal who tells them that they are a disappointment almost weekly. The teachers seem to have given up and cant wait until the 5th graders graduate. It all seems to come from the outgoing principal who should have retired last year. Our children are stressed and so are the teachers. Parents are afraid to get involved with a PTA that is a mean girls club. I hope the new principal will do a better job bringing the school together.

My daughter is finally graduating this year. So happy she is and wont be returning for my other children. My daughter was bullied here and ended up in therapy because of it. The principal shows no compassion towards females for some reason and always sides with what the boys say. They discriminate here thats for sure. Glad shes retiring so maybe the school will be better in 2025. SOME of the teachers are great and actually help your child succeed and achieve their learning goals.

My child is finally in 5th grade this year and it has been so disappointing. The only exciting thing is the sleep away camp. The field trips suck, compared to previous years. No one donates or volunteers. The PTA this year is horrible. Also, the principal is retiring after this year. Lastly, expect hours and hours of homework so any activity afterschool is impossible.

There are many pros and cons to our experience at Beckford. First, the Kindergarten teachers here are amazing. My daughter, unfortunately, experienced Kindergarten during the pandemic. So, she went through two different teachers. She loved them both but she especially loved Mrs. Cortina. Mrs. Cortina was patient, kind and so helpful. She had a much harder time adjusting to 1st grade in person. When she first started 1st grade, she was bullied immediately which was surprising because my daughter makes friends wherever she goes. She begged me to go back to online learning. It took multiple interventions, from me, for it to stop. Also, I will say that her 1st grade teacher she isn't too fond of; however, I can see how much she's progressed with her writing and math here so I can't really complain about a strict teacher. Overall though, she loves her friends and the activities she does at Beckford. Just this week, she did a scavenger hunt for Earth day, a walk-a-thon and a field trip. Hopefully next year she gets a great teacher that she can vibe with and no more bullies.

Teachers do not communicate in an efficient, effective ot timely manner. If you reach out to a teacher, they let you know your child is doing fine. Then, shortly afyer that you'll get a letter stating that your child is not performing at grade level standards in a certain area. Terrible communication. Also concerning, there are parents at this school who are reckless drivers and nothing is done about it by school officials. I am currently looking for another school.

As a parent, I am really sad to notice there are some unprofessional teachers here. These few like to give irrelevant, unsolicited advice. This appears to root from them being unhappy with their career of choice. They appear to be annoyed with the students and parents, as well as having no patience with anyone. On numerous occasions I've overheard teachers bad mouth other parents. My experience with my own child at this school is not that great. I'm now looking into other schools.

We moved specifically to the area so our children can attend this school. From the moment we submitted paperwork, we felt the secretaries were rude and discriminative. We had an instance were we were on the campus parking lot and was yelled at by a teacher to leave the premises because she thought we didn't belong there. Little to her knowledge, our son was a student at this school. We felt that we were being profiled. Our son's current teacher is amazing, but makes me worried about the other faculty at this school.

When my family moved to the area, I had heard such great great things about this school and was excited for my children to attend. In the end, I was disappointed with this experience. I believe great schools start with great leadership. This school is sorely lacking in that department. From my first encounter with the principal and how I was dealt with, I knew she lacked the tact and empathy in takes to be an effective leader. She was brash, had a self-important air about her, and did not care to listen to what I had to say. When there was a labor movement during the year, she was not supportive of the staff and was instrumental in driving a wedge between herself and the strikers and pitted staff against staff.
Like other schools, the teaching staff is hit or miss. A few of my kids' teachers seemed to lack experience and when faced with challenges, did not have the coping skills nor knowledge necessary to deal with the diversity of their students. This was perhaps the biggest disappointment of all.
As the reviews of this school show, many parents love this school. I was not one of them.

My daughter is just finishing Kinder and she has learned so much. We absolutely love Mrs. Yoon she told us the back to school night our kids would learn how to read before they went to 1st grade and she kept her promise.

My experience with teachers and administrators has been excellent. I am so surprised by the negative reviews that target the principal. When I have contacted her, I have found her to be fair, understanding of our needs, and willing to work towards a solution that is the best interest of my child. In my experience, IEP jmeetings are focused on meeting the needs of my child-no lying or bullying, I am not in the PTA!

The principal is condescending and administration bullies kids that aren't in privileged PTA group. I have caught her lying to try to get my kid in trouble. LAUSD worked with us to avoid a lawsuit.

My son was being bullied by 3-4 kids at a time, and he got suspended for defending himself. Got it reversed at LAUSD level, and principal retaliated by writing him up constantly. Fought her through legal channels and prevailed.

There needs to be an overall improvement in leadership at Beckford which was once a highly effectively run school when it was lead by someone other than Shelly Brower- We have had several parent complaints on her lack of sensitivity and manner of treating the community there.

Kinder was great, Mrs Green was an amazing teacher and my son thrived in her classroom. My son recently started 1st grade and comes home crying because he does not understand his work. The teacher is not helpful and gets irritated and inpatient. My 6 year old child is having his confidence broken because he is failing his classes. In addition to this, my son overheard some racial bullying on the play yard which I immediately reported and was told "kids will be kids" this is NOT okay and there should be ZERO tolerance for this behavior. The school is in a very nice neighborhood and it feels almost as though if you are not part of the "stay at home parent PTA click" you are treated poorly and your child is treated differently as well. I am really interested in moving my son to Darby which a lot of people have already done. I called and left several messages for the principal (who I agree is completely ineffective) and have not received a response. I also requested a meeting which his teacher whom I am still waiting to receive a response from.

It is hit and miss with the teachers. Great kinder teacher, very ineffective first and second grade, amazing third grade and so far a good forth grade. The school is not kid friendly. That may sound funny for an elementary school, but the principle is more concerned about test scores and funding than making it a fun learning environment for the kids. The kids could not go outside to experience the eclipse, they can't come to school in a Halloween costume on Halloween, she speaks to them in a condescending manner, they can not clap for each other during an assemble and she never smiles. The school has an anti-bullying assembly, but then they don't follow through on said punishment if there is bullying or physically assault. Our friends go to Darby and love it. There are dance assemblies, fun activities, they dress up on special days and their son is on honor roll. A positive, encouraging, fun environment nurtures success. That is lacking at Beckford.

This School is over crowed, way to many kids in a class. More yelling then teaching going on in the classroom. Bulling in classroom and on the playground is out of control. Not enough supervision on the yard, so there are many fights, both verbal and physical. No one at this school seems to care especially the principal. Hoping to get my child into a better school.

I agree with the below review "if your child is quiet, shy, a robot that likes to do paperwork, this school is for you" my daughter is creative, bubbly, assertive and doesn't like to sit still for long periods of time doing busy work. The aides on the playground are awful! One of them told my daughter to lie to another kid who asked for her opinion so as not to hurt her feelings, they get "red dojos" for "tattling" and told to only tell teacher if it's an emergency, then when your child stops tattling they get red dojos for other kids tattling on THEM. The Academics are good yes, but at the end of the day I want a child who not only is smart but creative, outgoing, confident, and thinks she has an opinion. This school only cares about their test scores not about the child themselves. We will be leaving this school next year.

Truthfully we are very disappointed in the way this school has gone down hill with the new principle in the last 3 years. I am very glad this is our last year at Beckford! It's sad to see such a great school with so much parent involvement go down hill the way it has.

The first day of school process is horrible! All of our friends children's school had orientation the week before school where you got to meet your childs teacher and know what class their in or they recieved a letter in the mail with the information. This school was crazy!! You had to show up at least 30 mins early, parking was a joke, you had to walk blocks because it was so crowded, then stand in this crowd of people pushing your kids around trying to figure out what room their child's in then trying to find that classroom! Very unorganized and of course the teacher was not very friendly she had no interest in talking to the parents. I'm not sure why what classroom your child has is such a big secret but it makes the first day very stressful for the parents and the children. I sure hope everything at this school is not this unorganized.

Honestly, this school is great if your child is a robot and lacks curiosity. If they will sit down and do busy work and be super happy, you have found your school. if you child is a natural learner and more creative, that will be squashed. They are thrilled with my child who gets good grades, but don't welcome any questions from students. Very boring. My kid hates going to this school. We are changing.

We have 2 kids attending this school. We are impressed with the active and involved parents, caring and competent teachers, and excellent administrative leadership. The school is safe, clean, and welcoming. Kids from all different backgrounds and countries come together for a great educational experience. (This year my kids had classmates from Japan, China, Egypt, Armenia, Russia, South Korea, Colombia, and Mexico, to name a few.) Other highlights included: a wonderful holiday musical program celebrating different cultural traditions (amazing considering ongoing budget cuts to arts programs); an adorable kindergarten talent show; a computer lab with a dedicated instructor teaching K-5th classes; a science program including a dedicated lab as well as an outdoor garden; and finally an AMAZING PTA which sponsors so many wonderful conmunity-building events: Family Fun Day, Halloween Trunk or Treat, 50's Sock Hop, free movie nights, Restaurant Nights, and so much more. API scores are high, thanks to the dedicated teaching staff, strong Admin support, and lots of parent volunteers in the classroom. We are so blessed to have this school in our community. It is a hidden gem in the Valley.

The principal is very rude and I will never recommend this school to anyone. She needs to be fired and replaced. She was rude with an attitude that made me and my family very uncomfortable and I will be definitely writing a review to the school board.

Honestly, I can't believe some of the negative things a few people are posting. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if a school doesn't fit your idea of what it should be, then find one that fits your style. You can't please everyone all the time. In my experience, Beckford is an excellent school! Very strong community feeling, and caring staff. My child is receiving a top notch education, which is remarkable considering the state of many LAUSD schools. The PTA working together with the school staff are responsible for many exciting curricular and extracurricular opportunities for the kids. All my child's teachers have been well trained, knowledgable, have supplemented the curriculum with appropriate fun activities, are skilled in dealing with disciplinary matters when needed (in a positive, not destructive way), and have been fair to all students. I feel as if my child is getting a private school education, in a public school.

The school is uninviting and prejudice towards families who speak up and voice their concerns. The principal, staff, PTA, and parents need to remember that parent(s) are their child's advocate... some requiring special education and other concerns.... no one can judge unless they are the parent dealing with the situation. For educators, this school lacks educated and compassionate staff members; stemming from the administrator. If you have a choice... choose another school.

I highly recommend perspective parents to attend PTA meetings and talk with other parents, teachers, and the principle before deciding on the school based on the reviews and test scores alone. Try to get the feel for the school parents in general to see if there's a *fit*. It's very important that you feel the *fit* before moving into the neighborhood. Also check out their school/community events like Family Fun Day and Trunk or Treat type of events. Do your homework before making the leap of faith! You don't have to live in the neighborhood to apply to the school since it's Charter. If not Balboa, check out Germain and Porter Ranch Community school around the area they seemed to have academic events like Science Fair, Math Night, and strong Art program (PRCS). They group their GATE kids into cluster together. Beckford does have GATE but all the kids are mixed in with non GATE kids, which means the GATE kids get the same instruction as the rest of the population, therefore there's no differentiated instruction for the advanced kids. So, there's no GATE class per se although they will tell you about GATE program. It will only matter when kids go into GATE in middle school.

Honestly, I don't like this school very much! expecially reagrding magnet school program application. this school is getting very weird feeling. last year, we applied, but the teacher didn't give my daughther ceritfied, but she didn't tell us. and this year we want to ask teacher if she can give her certified, the teacher and pricinpal told us this is confidential, but for most of our friends's kids school, the teachers will always direactly told parents, not confidential, I'm wondering if beckford does want to something which is not fair, that's why they want to keep confidential? also I feel this school doesn't have any special program,that is suprised me because it is called charter.

This school is fantastic. My son is now in 2nd grad and I have yet to have a negative experience with either the teachers or the staff outside the classroom. The principal is great..nothing beats seeing my son run up to her for a hug as I'm walking him to school.

Having come from Pinecest and having payed an arm and a leg and still being unsatisfied with the staff and academics, I cannot believe how comparable Beckford is in every area. I have a kindergartner and second grader starting this year and am very impressed with the staff and parent involvement. My kids just love it!

This school is a breath of fresh air for us! Having come from a school where my children were bullied and picked on and not supported by staff and administration, I have almost lost faith in the school system. That is until we arrived at Beckford. I have never had children look forward to going to school. They are eager to learn and happy to participate in class. The campus is clean, the teachers are very supportive of parents and kids, office staff is friendly and welcoming. I could not have asked for a better school for my kids. They are learning, happy, excited to go to school - what more can a parent want?

We have two children at Beckford, and a third entering in two years. Beckford has proven to be filled with caring and involved parents, a wonderful sense of community, administrators who welcome you by name (with knowledge of your children), and dedicated teachers. The campus is well maintained, and no stone is left unturned in providing education well above par of many private schools. Highly recommended.

The beauty of Beckford is the feeling of Community. There are many good schools with good teachers. Beckford allows for the parents to feel as if they are aiding with their children's education and the school encourages our participation. I believe the welcoming sense of community makes the student want to come to school, to want to be a part of the education process versus just going through the motions. That is part of what makes Beckford and exceptional school.

This is our first year at Beckford. We had heard so many great things about the school and were happy that it was going to be the school that our Kindergartner was going to be attending. . We had gone to an Open House, Parent Orientation and New Parent Visit; all prior to the start of the school year. All of the teachers, office staff and principal were so helpful. They have made this transition from preschool to public school so easy and painless. Our son LOVES school! He has learned so much in the first 2 weeks. He can't wait to go to school everyday, loves his teacher (Mrs. Yoon) and loves all of the new friends that he has made.

My son is in second grade now and has been attending Beckford Charter since Kindergarten. We both are thrilled with the education and enrichment activities that are provided by this great school. My youngest son will also be attending Beckford, and I am sure the quality of education will continue to thrive.

Seriously, this needs to stop. Beckford is a good school. Ofcourse, everyone has there own opinons. If you are not happy with a school, you are truly doing a disservice to your child and yourself to not explore other options. It makes no sense to constantly argue with administration, teachers and other parents over this issue. No school, teacher, administrator or parent is perfect. It also should be clear that if you are not getting what you need from a particular school, it's time to move on.

We started Kinder in 2011 the same year it became a Charter. I don't know what it was like before, but it was considered one of the best in the area. As a single father, I am very happy with her education, safety and after school care from the YMCA.

My kindergardener came home very excited yesterday telling me Mrs. Brower (the principal) told him he may be at second grade level. I love that the principal and teachers are so uplifting and encouraging to their students. That is really important to me. I asked my son if Mrs. Brower knows his name (as she has 546 students at her school) and he responded, "Yes, she knows everyone's name!" How awesome is that? Also, I am very pleased with how much my son has learned in this first school year. He actually loves to read his own books now, which is amazing to me knowing how much of a struggle it was trying to get him to learn letters and phonics. I am perfectly fine with the his teacher using reward systems for behavior in the class, as I know my very active boy may need as many warnings as it takes. It is also a good way for me to know what his behavior was like at school so we can talk about it at home and find ways to reward him for good behavior in class.

This used to be one of the best community schools in the area, academically and culturally. But since they went charter, it lost it's community feelings and the new kids and parents are not as academically motivated and involved. The school reputation is not what it used to be in the area. I hope the principal is aware of these facts and do something about it to bring back the school.

GOOD - safe, great parental involvement and active PTA BAD - NO Gifted program, some people manages to get the class of their choice (working parents and staying at home parent without PTA connection will be greatly disadvantaged) Some kids are in 4th/5th split class and they don't get enough attention because the class is divided. No mandatory Parent-Teacher conference -- it will be tricky to get a hold of your child's teacher and get information. Even if you buy the house in the premium neighborhood, your child can still be put into the class of 90% non-neighborhood kids and never really get to make friends with the neighborhood kids.
