Our son started Dearborn in 2024 as a Kindergarten student. Today he started 3rd grade.
Here is my honest take so far, for the last 3 years.
PRINCIPAL
Principal George Fuentes is one of the best educators I have ever met in my entire life. He is incredibly dedicated, well-educated, disciplined yet loving and caring. You'll find him very professional and serious during academics related situations, and very funny and friendly in social events. During orientation sessions, he speaks like a TED speaker, but in the Fall Festival, he wears a Dracula costume and makes barbecue for kids :) Also, in a school with almost 600 students, he calls our son with his name. He is almost like a father figure.
STAFF AND PTA
I've always felt like we are a big family. Staff members and very friendly and helpful. I never witnessed any rude comments or negative attitude. PTA shines every year with their great events. They are very well organized and friendly.
TEACHERS
It's hard to generalize the quality or characteristics of teachers since it depends on our and our child's own, unique experience. Our TK teacher was nice, and the first grade teacher Ms. Carmona was incredible. In your first conversation, you immediately feel that she is a mom, which is the most important thing to me, even more than academics. She cares a lot about your kid, as if he is her own. She helped our son get his ADHD diagnosis with her insightful comments, and truly supported us and our son. As adults, we remember only a few teachers of ours who genuinely changed our perspectives with their deep knowledge or caring attitude. I have no doubt that Ms. Carmona will be in that list in our son's life.
We have mixed feelings about our second grade teacher
MANNERS AND MENTAL DEVELOPMENT
Again, it's hard to make a generalization as experiences differ, but I can easily say that the school staff and teachers are doing their absolute best to help students learn how to become 'good' people. You understand that it's top priority.
EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
This is another category Dearborn truly shines. There are so many great events throughout the year. Color runs, fall festivals, cultural programs, carefully curated field trips, pajama parties, weekend enrichment classes (cooking, robotics, coding, etc.), YMCA and After School All-Stars programs, and more.
CONCLUSION
Overall, we are very happy with Dearborn, and we can easily recommend it to any parent and child.

I can't speak enough great things about the SPED/AUT teachers and aides at this school. They are seriously some of the best teachers/aides I have ever met; they care so much about the children in their classes. My son has made immense progress, and I attribute it all to them; they truly care and provide him with patience. He now enjoys completing his homework and is eager to learn. I am so grateful for them! The office staff is also incredibly helpful and is always ready to help.

My daughter who is now 19 attended this elementary school and has been in all the SAS class since 2nd grade. She had the BEST TEACHERS. She grew up very smart and nice person and now attends UCSB. I really believe that the schools, teachers, and environtment plays A big role in our childs development bith mental and physical. Dearborn elementart is very close to our hearts even if it isnt our homeschool, my kids were lucky that they got accepted through lottery. Now my 10 year old son also attends the same school under SAS class and had the same teachers as my daughter. He loves all his teachers, he excel academically and always looks forward to attending school daily. Hes into Orchestra playing violin (4th and now 5th), he also was part of the Robotics team last year 2023-2024 and he and his 2 close friends won the Best Coding Award in Nestle Elem Robitics competetion. Is is again looking forward to joining this year. He is also part of the Ballroom dancing and was lucky to have been selected last year to represent the school and dance tango. He is looking forward for this year as well. I recommend dearborn school and my kids are very happy.

My son who is autistic loves going to school, we had an awful experience at his previous school and were so happy when he got assigned to Dearborn. The Teachers and TAs in his class are all so amazing and patient with the children. He is always so excited to go to school and tell me about his day at the end of the day. I can't speak enough about what a huge relief this has been for us as his parents, we have seen him thrive in this environment and are forever grateful.

I am so happy that we found this school! This is our second year at Dearborn, as my daughter was accepted via lottery for TK. She just completed kindergarten and will be headed to first grade in the fall. Dearborn has an exceptionally strong community feel - it's like our second family. During the pandemic, the teachers and administrators worked incredibly hard to ensure that all students had the technology necessary to effectively learn in a virtual environment. There were several drive-thru distributions where the students received supplies for their virtual learning. It was evident that Dearborn strived to maintain a continuity of learning for all students. They also hosted student check-in groups with the school psychologist to ensure that the social-emotional needs of students were met.
Additionally, the school and its PTA continued to hold virtual events, such as the opportunity to virtually decorate a Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon to compile into a virtual quilt, and themed days where families could post pictures of their children on the school's Facebook page and on Schoology. These events really helped my child to feel that the Dearborn community was still connected even though it was in a virtual environment. Also, I am so impressed with the Yearbook for this school year! It included so many different aspects from technology, such as bitmojis from teachers and class pictures of the students in Zoom. Families also had the opportunity to upload pictures to a digital yearbook site so that they could be included in the hard copy of the yearbook. It was wonderful to see the pictures that I uploaded of my child in the yearbook! The yearbook was done beautifully and captured this crazy year in a fun and memorable way.
A big thank you to our Principal, Mrs. Estrada, for all of her leadership, dedication, and hard work to keep our kids happy, safe, and learning during this unprecedented school year. We are so lucky to have you as our Principal! I look forward to my child continuing her educational journey at Dearborn and highly recommend this school for all families looking for a great school for their child. I am so fortunate that we found Dearborn!

principal doesn't care about anything but the schools budget and the overall review of herself. 2 years with the worst 5th grade graduation. The smallest effort is being done. Don't understand why virtual graduation is the route that was chosen when there is in class schooling. Don't understand why there was no yearly pictures. My 5th grader has No class pictures for their last year and my kinder has No class pictures for their 1st year soooo disappointing, While the schools in poverty stricken areas have in person graduations pictures etc. I would never recommend this school.

Cant say enough positive things about DECA! The teachers, PTA and principal are so involved and dedicated. There is no shortage of enrichment opportunities, family fun events, and after school programs that are offered. The school has a wonderful sense of community, and even through the pandemic, my child was still given an amazing experience with distant learning.
The schools communication is excellent across the board. In a time of uncertainty when we didnt know what the pandemic would bring, as parents, we were given so many opportunities to discuss concerns, ask questions with the Principal and provided with information as it was received. I couldnt be happier with our choice to enroll our daughter here!

We've had such a wonderful year so far. The school office staff is extremely welcoming, the principal is hands down the best around, and the kids always are happy. I love how organized every event the school puts on is. The PTA is wonderful and welcomes new families with open arms (vs being so exclusive). My son is so happy here. Love all the extra curricular activities they offer. Love that there is options for parents who work full time in terms of before and after school child care.

My child is in kindergarten and the homework allows me to review what she did in Math and then we read together. It's manageable for her in terms of difficulty and for me in terms of time.
Posted: December 12, 2018
We are in Mrs. Rodgers' class and could not be more impressed. She motivates the children and has an excellent handle on classroom management. My child enjoys going to school and adores her teacher.
Posted: December 12, 2018
They school provides opportunities for service. Thus far, we have participated in a school clean-up day, a gift collection for the holidays, and a collection for a family who lost their home in the recent fires.
Posted: December 12, 2018
I have had little to no interaction with the principal thus far. However, she is highly visible. I often see her monitoring the school yard before school. I feel that if I needed to speak to her, she would be approachable. The school is very clean. I rarely see trash on the yard and the bathrooms are always clean.

In all honesty, we took a gamble with the school. I was hesitant to place my child here because of the rating on this website. I toured the school and attended a Back-to-School night prior to enrolling my child. After attending the activities I was struck by the community. The teachers were very nice, the kids appeared happy to be there, and the families were welcoming. I also appreciated the active and engaged PTA group, which is always a good sign. I recommend taking the tour if possible.

Excellent! This is our first year at this school. My son is in Mr. Cuevas class and hes a great teacher. Hes very easy to get a hold of and always available to talk to even though I know hes very busy. My son loves him! We were on vacation and my son did all of his homework and was well behaved, as if he was in school. And when it was time to play, oh he played! PTA is very active which is always a good thing!
Posted: November 28, 2017
I have only had good experiences with the teachers. Mr. Cueva was my sons kinder teacher and he was a gem. Excellent with the kids and very easy to talk to. I'm so glad he was my sons first teacher. We are now in the 1st grade and are in Mrs. Ammaris class and she is wonderful. She always makes herself available to talk no matter what the question is. She is very effective in handling the kids and my son loves her. I enjoy my conversations with her and she always communicates my sons progress with me. We have been lucky to come across such devoted educators.
Posted: November 28, 2017
The students are reminded to be respectful towards one another and are rewarded when caught doing a good deed. Very motivational but I think it would be good to have a few students per class just to keep the motivation going.
Posted: November 28, 2017
I have had only a couple brief interactions with the principal. 1 in a pleasant situation and another not so pleasant situation and she was very nice. She holds weekly Monday assemblies going over current events and rewarding students for good behavior. I do think there is a bit of room for improvement when it comes some aspects of the position. Overall not bad.
Posted: November 28, 2017
My son is an English learner and has struggled academically since day 1 and it has been a work in progress. I think the teachers try their best with the resources they are given. Most of the work I think is catered to the average student who is able to read the directions and have an understanding of what to do. They have an ELAC program which my son is a part of and they keep me up to date. Mr. Barajas is very easy to talk to and really does do his best to put your mind at ease with any questions or concerns that may arise.
Posted: November 28, 2017
This area needs some improvement. My son has experienced a bit of bullying which I addressed with the teachers and they took care of it. The school itself needs to implement some sort of disciplinary action towards the students who are bullying or to have an open door to go over these issues.
Posted: November 28, 2017
The homework is ok but I think a bit too difficult for someone who is an English learner. It is a bit challenging and maybe too much pressure for a young child.
Posted: November 28, 2017
I would rate my experience 7/10 and that is 90% because of the teachers and the friendly parents I have met. Most of the staff is friendly except the office manager. She's unbelievably rude and will leave you upset for quite some time after you leave the office. Have had multiple unpleasant interactions with her and I try my best to avoid her at all times. Other than that they have a PTA that has put together a large number of after school programs that are made possible with $100 donations. The price for the programs are a bit over $100 and maybe not suited for families that are lower income and on a budget. There are also a lot of after school events like bowling night and movie night which I think are pretty nice and the kids enjoy. I think areas for students who need special attention needs improvement. I think safety needs a bit of work here also. The cross walk guards are no longer there so it's really scary to go across the street when drivers don't stop at the stop sign. There have also been a couple incidents where someone has entered the school by jumping the fence and I have experienced one of the lockdowns while dropping off my sons lunch. The situations were handled quickly and I haven't heard of anything happening recently. Overall I'd say take your time and explore all your options before settling on one.

She had Mrs. Rodriguez in TK and she was a great teacher. Very supportive and caring. They have a fantastic PTA that funds many of the activities for the students. My favorite part of Dearborn is the Monday morning assembly. The principle Mrs. Estrada is very hands on and does a great job motivating the students. I highly recommend this school!

Overall, our experience has been good. I cannot speak more highly of the Dearborn PTA. Under their leadership, the parents pull together to provide wonderful curricular programs (which have sadly been lost to budget cuts) to enrich their education. The PTA provides: performing and visual art instruction (ballroom dance, art instruction/education), computer/technology instruction, physical education, field trips, family-fun events, community service events, and so much more!
For the most part, the teachers are WONDERFUL. As with any school, anywhere, you're not going to love them all, but they do teach and your child will learn a lot.
Principal is relatively new, but very involved and approachable.

Dearborn used to be the best SAS school in the valley. But the new principal has worked VERY hard to ruin that. She took kids out of the SAS classes and replaced them with kids who had never been in SAS before. Many of the parents of those kids are saying that their kids are struggling with the harder work, but the kids who should be in the SAS classes were taken out. Why? Some of the parents of the kids who were taken out screamed loud enough that their kids were put back in, so now the SAS classes are packed and more crowded than the other classes. If the principal hates SAS so much, why would she want to be in charge of an SAS school? Maybe it is so she can destroy the program. She is certainly doing a good job of that so far. Sadly, we are looking at other SAS schools in hopes of finding one that actually embraces the special needs of SAS students.

Best school ever, strong PTA who really strive to bring in funds to support an awesome selection of after school enrichment programs. Amazing computer lab, field trips, orchestra.. the list goes on and on... There is also a lot of opportunities to be involved and encouraged to help your child and everyone else's have the best education possible. Dearborn Dolphins! We are THE best! This school should be a 10!

This will be the second year for Dearborn's new principal, Mrs. Estrada. She did an amazing job her first year and worked hard over the summer to get Dearborn's new website up and running, as well as, the new science lab installed. She is dedicated to making Dearborn Elementary be the best it can be. There is a strong sense of community at Dearborn and the PTA has been award winning for years. Thanks to the PTA, Dearborn has programs like Art, Science, Computer Lab, Dance, physical fitness, multiple field trips every year for each grade level, etc. It's a lovely community surrounding the school campus. Overall a great place to live and send your kids to school!

Teachers receive continuous training throughout the year. Based on the teachers that my children have had, they are very effective. Both my kids were challenged academically, are thriving and retain what they have learned.
Posted: May 24, 2016
All homework should be grade level appropriate. I find that my child gets the just the right amount of homework.
Posted: May 24, 2016
My favorite time of the week are our Monday Morning Assemblies. In no other school that I've visited is there an ongoing way to communicate with parents, teachers and students. Each assembly is concluded with a thought of good character development.
Posted: May 24, 2016
Both my kids went through and SRLP program at a different school and even though they had build friendships and the academics were strong within that school we decided that Dearborn was the best school for them. Not only is Dearborn exceptional in their academic goals and teaching strategies but they offer a whole child approach to ensure that the children are well rounded in all aspects of development. With the continuous support of the Parent Teacher Association, PTA, they are able to maintain many programs that the district has financially decreased or has stopped providing altogether. Art programs for all grades, ballroom dancing for 5th grade, field trips, onsite enrichment/assemblies, technology program, YMCA Program, and the new Science Lab are just a few list items that continue because of parent involvement and support. Mrs. Estrada has been a fantastic addition to Dearborn. She has demonstrated great leadership skills, diplomacy, and people skills. Overall, Dearborn is a great school because it definitely has a small community feeling, people greet you when youre on campus, everyone is welcoming and we all have the same goal: helping our kids prepare for the future by giving them as many positive academic experiences as possible.

I love this little school. The parents, teachers, & administration are all wonderful, friendly & helpful. They are very focused on the safety & well-being of our children. They strive to have the best programs & consistently work on improving resources. The PTA is phenomenal at providing fun events for families to enjoy & fundraisers to help our school.
My children are in 1st & 3rd grade (and will have 2 more attend soon). All their teachers have always been wonderful & communitive. As with anything, you get out what you put in. And we have had the best, most positive experience!

The PTA is wonderful and so involved! They are the reason this school has all the incredable programs compared to other elementary schools... (from computer programs to ballroom dance). The SAS/gifted program is awesome! We have been here all 6 years from Kindergarten thru 5th...time flies. You won't be disappointed, come join Dearborn and get involved:)

I've been a Dearborn Elementary parent since 2009 and the school has a wonderful community and a strong PTA. The new principal Mrs. Estrada has been so involved and a very positive change for our school. She has implemented a new science lab, brought in dance for all grade levels, she is always at every event encouraging and supporting our kids! The teachers want our kids to thrive and develop good habits. Thank you DECA!

I chose DECA for its strong administrative leadership and academic excellence with the SAS program. I cannot say enough about the SAS teachers at this school. They all go through many hours of training and genuinely want their students to succeed. Mrs. Huth turned our son into an intrinsically motivated young man who loves to learn. It is a shame there are not more schools like Dearborn.

The principal is hands-on, very active, and patient. She is genuinely caring towards the students, teachers, parents, everyone and the school. The parents are very friendly, kind and enthusiastic to participate! Students are motivated and excited to come to school and participate in various activities. It's an exceptional school with a strong initiative for a sense of community and health and well-being.

I am so thankful for Ms. La Russa. She is one great teacher who is caring, patient and compassionate. She is dedicated. She is there early and stays late after school making herself easy to approach by students and parents. She communicate s well and are organized. The students just loves her and are happy to have her as their teacher. She is always encouraging them to do good and be positive, not to mention she always have a bowl of fruit, encouraging healthy snacking not only for the students but for parents as well. Thank you Ms. La Russa!

Great awesome school, everyone is friendly.
A lot of learning activities opportunities for volunteering.
My daughter enjoys going to school.
Parent, don't see your school as just a public school. They also need your help and donations to continue giving our children what they need for their education.
All the parents and students get treated equally, there's nothing political about the principal, nor staff/ teachers. Get involved, your children benefit from all this.
Thank you,
A very grartfull parent.

Teachers are wonderful, helpful, caring, determined to have their students learn. They are wrongly effective.

Actually, it's never enough when you want your children to learn more and more, but it's just right.

My son is in kindergarten. We are very happy with this school. The teachers are very hardworking and and shows a lot of care to their students and pride on their job. They provide quality care and education to the students. For a public school, we are very impressed with their computer lab! They have top notch equipment. The field trip programs are also very well thought of. The principal and admin staff are very hands on, attentive and helpful. This school provides a lot of parent/school involvement. They care a lot about the safety of their students and quality of education they provide. Friendly and safe atmosphere. Also, it is a huge factor (most especially for working parents) that they provide after-school care within the campus, not just one but two options including lots of enrichment programs such as arts, chess, dancing, etc. They aim to become one of the best schools in the valley. We are very happy about this school. My son is very happy.

I have two kids who have graduated from Dearborn . Very political on how they run this school. Some of the comments below are very true, some positive and negative. Start with the Principal: "Any concerns were quickly disregarded which displayed to us that the principal cares more about the reputation of the school, than what is best for the children." My experience and what I have seen and heard from concerned parents is very true. If you are not on the PTA or in the "in crowd" of parents, you are not worth her attention. Also Science Fairs over the years are rigged with the parents obviously doing the projects for their kids with the people running the show with a "blind eye". Overall the teachers seem to be very well liked and take your concerns for your child seriously.

Calvert Elementary is the best academic school! The staff and teachers are very creative with the students.

My daughter is in Kindergarten and she is thriving and enjoying the challenges the school is giving to her; 2-3 homework each day, 310 minutes reading per month, more reading log from 2 different sponsors, challenging math problems, projects, animal research, test and more test. So, you see, if your child is like mine, you will like Dearborn. But if you want a less challenging school for your kid then send your kid to an under performing school so that your kid and you as a parent will not be stressed out.

Love Dearborn! I was amazed by what my child can do at such a young age! Kindergarten and first grade is no longer glorified day care. It is amazing what my child is capable of! Thank you to all the great teachers at Dearborn.

I would not choose this school again. It is very militaristic. The amount of homework for kindergarten is ridiculous. The homework tonight: 5 sessions of timed 1 minute fluency test ( read 10-15 min by the time you instruct the child), 20 minutes of reading, writing 2 sentences, ( for a kid, (at least 10-15 min) then make a drawing and color it ( another 10 minutes), then write all the numbers from 1- 100, then say the numbers 1-100 3 times, then read and write the 4 words for Friday. Then work on the research of the animal you chose, write the 3 sentences. It is at least 2 hours of homework, in addition to being cooked up in the classroom for 7 hours. Tomorrow there will be more ... For a 5 year old. It is insane. i did just fine with much less homework, and that didn't stop me from having postgraduate degrees from top institutions.

Specially the ladies in the front office, they always have a smile and they are willing to help sbove and beyond as long as is resonably possible. All three of my children have gone to Dearborn. I currently have two still at Dearborn and have been quite pleased with my experience here since day one. I sent my daughter to private school before attending Dearborn and was a little hesitant at first. (With all the negative comments about public schools)It has been the best decision I have ever made. I wish I could take back the years she was in private school! The teachers are all excellent as well as the principal. The principal was just awarded principal of the year! In my opinion she is what makes the school great! The same rules apply to everyone. The PTA is awesome as well. Very involved and raise extra money for things the school and kids need. I really do not have anything negative to say about this school. I am so lucky to have it as my home school!

Dearborn Elementary is an excellent neighborhood school. My son has been attending since he was in Kindergarten and is now in third grade. He is not a student performing at the top of his class but all the teachers he's had to now have pushed him to to work hard. He loves going to school and I never get that "I don't want to go to school today." The administrator definitely works hard to keep this school in tip top shape! They have an extremely active PTA that helps fund many extras that the LAUSD does not provide. It is definitely a well rounded school and feel very blessed that my son gets to attend.

Wow, after four years attending Dearborn with 4 very different teachers and groups of classmates, I am thoroughly pleased with the education our child received!! The PTA is very busy and involved in the school providing events, activities, field trip buses and PE where LAUSD funds were cut. These extra events like art, music, ballroom dancing, psychomotor and after school activities make school fun and enjoyable for the children! The principal and staff are WONDERFUL and exceptionally hardworking which shows in the great test results and academic progress of the students. We will stay involved in Dearborn well after our child culminates from the school, because supporting our local school is important and we have made so many friends we would hate to leave.

My son has just finished Kinder and had a great year. I am very happy with his growth both socially and academically. I know the Principal has been criticized for not being "warm and fuzzy" but this has not been a problem for our family. The school's policies are clearly explained and the only problems I have heard of are from parents who want an exception to them. I would recommend Dearborn to any parent, there are different teaching styles within the Kinder classes and one is sure to match with your child.

Our time at Dearborn Street Elementary was terrible. My child experienced issues with a cold and inattentive teacher and a principal on a power-trip. Any concerns were quickly disregarded which displayed to us that the principal cares more about the reputation of the school, than what is best for the children. We are happily not attending this school anymore.

As a parent of children at Dearborn, I am very pleased with the education they are getting there. I have always felt welcomed and encouraged to be a part of my children's school life. The staff is very professional and welcoming. Although the principal is not a "warm and fuzzy" type person, she is an excellent administrator who is fair and consistant with all of the students. I feel that my children are very safe on the Dearborn campus and the teachers there are absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this school!
