If you want your child to hate school and not go to college send them here. This place makes kids miserable and why would they want to continue to college when they're done here. The teachers are mean and rude. They put so much pressure and work on the kid that they spend their whole afternoon and weekends doing homework.

Granada Hills Charter is horrible. They give the students lots of stress and anxiety by not giving them enough time to rest and be with friends and family. They decided to make the nutrition 8 minutes because the passing period would make it add up to 15, since it is a requirement for nutrition to be 15 minutes, but it doesnt help at all since the lines to get food are so long, by the time you get it 8 minutes have passes and the bell rings, and you dont have time to eat it, otherwise youre gonna be late. Then, lunch is just 30 minutes, which is a little more time, but you have to wait in long lines since they dont have separate lunches for the students, and many students cut. They also dont give as many days off as other schools. They do end the school year sooner, but then the kids with siblings dont get to hangout, since one kid has a day off while the other is still at school. Like on Thanksgiving break, most schools get the week off, but at Granada Hills? Nope. They just give 3 days off so the students have to go the first 2 days knowing they couldve been hanging out with their siblings if they chose a decent school. Also the dress code is horrible. It only targets what girls wear, and it is very strict. Even the teachers hate it. But when you do get dress coded, for just showing like one centimeter of your stomach, you have to wear your sweat covered PE clothes, or a thick sweater, but in this heat? Wearing a sweater when its so hot out can cause many health problems. But remember, Granada Hills wants to cause more than stress and anxiety. I dont even know if injured students can pass the schools PE. Some of the PE teachers will give you a 0 for being sick at home, even if you bring in a doctors note. So if you bring in a doctors note for a broken leg? You would either fail that class or get lots of stress from having to write essays everyday to make up for it. They even have these stupid Minga passes now to get in or out. Like I get that someone might try to break on, but then just let students use their IDs instead. But to make everything hard, we cant. The internet is horrible if you use your phone, so it takes forever to load the pass. Causing parents and kids to be late for other things, plus some kids dont even have phones. If you dont have one, you have to take out your big computer there, which you can accidentally drop since theres no where to put it. This school is horrible. Can someone at least try to fix it?

Well, I hate writing negative reviews, but hope this one will help someone. Both of my kids were attending this school. High school is not so bad, have nothing to say about, but TK-8 was awful experience. They do nothing about bullying in the school. Kids could be very mean you know, but the administration always find excuse for that. My daughter was bullied so much, at 4 and 5 grade, started to avoid the school as much as she can, but all they care about is attending. You have a lot of absence. They will terrorize you, but no one will ask why. They dont have professional counseling support, psychologist. I really regret that my kid faced to this kind of bullying and I was insisting and keep coming to this school. Now she has a mental health problem and they did nothing! So if you are one of the parent who dreams about fancy high rated school, think twice and if your child told you about bullying, believe him and withdraw him immediately.

The school is so-so. The mental health help is really bad though. The wellness center is so open there are like 3 other students so you can't really open up and there is always an underlying fear of your parents seeing what you say. As for teachers, most of them dont care about you as much as they say they do. They repearedly belittle and bully students and make them feel horrible. The theater program is outstanding though and it's a posative community, but its all I have. I have been called slurs and hear the n-word thrown around casually with no punishment, but I get an hour of detention if my chromebook dies even In 6th period. They focus on the wrong stuff, why does it matter if a little cleavage is showing over a teacher literally dragging a student by her hair and cutting it. If the school finds this and comes after me, I dont care anymore because things need to be changed. To anyone coming to this school, good luck, you'll need it.

We were so excited for our children to attend this school. In fact, one of the reasons we moved to the area is that Granada would be our home school. My son graduated last year and my daughter is Junior and just switched schools. Our initial excitement has turned to extreme disappointment in this school. From the way this school makes you feel like youre a second class citizen, to the if youre not academically elite, then youll fall by the wayside attitude, there was never a time that I felt welcome in the school, that my concerns were heard, or my children felt that many of their teachers cared about them. It starts at the top when my son graduated last year, Mr. Bauer, the head of the school spoke. After the ceremony my son said that guy spoke to us like he knows us. I have never even seen him in my four years here. I am a educator in another high school and his comments were very sad. This school might have a high academic rating but schools should be more than academics. Students should feel nurtured and cared about. Families should feel they are welcome at the school their children attend. We felt neither. Maybe others have had good experiences, I can only write about mine.

My son just graduated from high at Granada Hills Charter High School. After 4 years of crazy times. His first year 2020 was completely hard due to Covid but the teachers & Staff always were there to help. My son received special education programs. Every single Teacher from the only best Mr. Eisen, The Awesome Mr. Aguilar, Mrs. Bowen great spirit & sense of humor and amazing other teachers like Mrs Lengkong Mr. Clark; and every single person of the Staff Thank you for all you did for my son!

Most of the teachers belittled students on a daily basis and then pretended to be all nice around administrations. There were also many events of potential shooting and bomb threats that weren't clearly conveyed to parents and only were known due to rumors. The administration constantly dismisses students' complaints on teachers if they are of high enough seniority.

Okay. Its fine. But it could be better. The campus is nice, the food is nice, whatever. But theres so much else. Teachers who dont care, classmates who receive almost no consequences for sucking and posing ACTUAL distractions, the absolutely insane detention policy???

Seriously. I cannot attend most school activities if I have an hour for something stupid. You can get an hour for your Chromebook DYING in class. Wish I was kidding. They are so absolutely strict for the stupidest reasons.

and even though I would recommend it because its okay? Its just a regular public school with some slightly better factors. I guess theater is nice. Actually good with the arts, somehow, despite everything.

They also put too much emphasis on being college ready, even for Freshman and students who do not wish to go to college. Its one of those schools where they expect every child to get into college no matter what, and if you dont, youre some sort of massive failure.

This school claims to be one of the best schools in California. However, they achieve this success through tyranny. The school's late policy is ridiculous. If a student is even 10 seconds late, they are sent to spend an entire period in the dreaded room A5, which is essentially the detention room. This is the most ineffective way to deal with tardiness, robbing students of crucial class time. The security of this school is also largely a facade. The school will ensure that you know they have 1-2 armed security officers, but neglect to mention that the remaining 95% of security staff spend their time talking amongst themselves and yelling at children to take off their hoodies. If any actual threat occurs to the school, they will be minimally effective at best. To give the school credit, (if you take a specialized program such as STEM), the teachers are often quite kind and understanding. The school's student body is also very supportive, most of the time. There are obviously class clowns and bullies, as there are in all schools. However, the number of fights that have broken out is increasing. The main form of support students will receive is from each other, and occasionally from the Wellness Counselors. However, students will most likely hesitate to visit them, as any excess exposure of information will result in contact with parents. From personal experience, the best way to describe the atmosphere at Granada is communal suffrage. Most of the students jokingly speak about their suffering because that is one of the few forms of venting that are available to students. This school is best compared to a low-security prison, where the prisoners are treated like cattle and can only find comfort in each other. I would recommend a school with more supportive staff and less ridiculous policies.

this school sucks. First, they changed the nutrtion to 8 minutes. REALLY, 8 MINUTES? Nutrion is supposed to be for eating, going to the bathroom, and getting ready to go to your next class. I don't even have time to go to my usual spot where my friends and I hang out at, I BARELY have any time to even get a snack or even use the bathroom. Please note that this school has more than 6,000+ students and every single area of this school is EXTREMLY crowded. A lot of my teachers think this rule is crazy as well, and that students have no break. Do not get me wrong, some of the teachers here are amazing and teach in really good ways, the school has diverse cultures which I think is great as well. But i truly think that they dont give time for students to freshen up before their next class or to even catch a break at home. At first, i thought my brother was joking around when he said this school didn't care about us but he was right. I feel like this school is an okay option to go through, but there are a lot of fights and its super overcrowded. The bathroom rule is terrible too. i just want my nutriton back.

Good school with a variety of classes and programs. Sport teams are competitive. My only complaint is the absent late policy. Were in the middle of a pandemic and youre only allowed 15 days before you drop fail the class, I think this should be adjusted because it puts pressure on kids to show up for school, Rather than the motivation of wanting to be there. Complete difference. The dress code policy is also un-necessarily strict, stop objectifying kids for natural human things like shoulders and a mid riff.

Sad when Senior students are penalized for staying true to their own bodily autonomy and health standards.

Blacklisting these young adults during the school year and excluding them from attending events that should be memories for the rest of their life, it is pathetic at best and reprehensible at worst.

Discrimination such as this would never be allowed in any other capacity however, questionable "science" and flip flopping from so called "experts" throughout the last two years have brought into the spotlight just who the true lemmings are.

Utterly ridiculous what the school board is being allowed to get away with but karma will come for them one day.

If you have any other options available for educating your children, take it. Allowing this travesty to go on is only going to embolden them further in the future.

People are fooled by the term independent charter, there is no such thing as we learned during COVID. This school like all others in the sewer that is LAUSD has Union controlled classrooms and district administrators oversight. COVID shots are less then 12% effective, yet the administration has NO PROBLEM bullying students who don't comply with political and medical tyranny. They are actually forbidding their seniors from walking and collecting their diplomas unless they submit. Send your kids to private school, homeschool, or pods but keep them far away from this indoctrination center.
And to the kids who did not comply. You, with your leadership, and independent thinking are genuinely our future. Congratulations.

Granada is a great school! My son loves it and has enjoyed his time here! His regular counselor and college counselor played a big part through his high school years! My son has enjoyed the staff, administrative staff, security staff and coaches here. Never had a problem, always got the classes he needed. Graduating 2022 with a 4.00 GPA all 4 years.

One of my sons was consistently on the honor roll. He continues to be on the honor roll in college. He placed in the highest English course in college. My son that has a learning disability was able to graduate. Both my children met their goals thanks in part to the effectiveness of their teachers.

Being a parent of two students at GHCHS, I believe this is a great school. As in any other school, you have your good teachers and your bad ones. I feel there are more bad than good here though. There are a lot of resources to help students who are having difficulty and the staff is available when you want to address any concerns. It's definitely a large school with a large student population so if your child does not do well with large crowds, this is not the school for them.
Some comments here talk about the pressure to perform or issues with bullying. The school doesn't pressure anyone to go to medical school or to take AP classes. That pressure comes from parents and from the students themselves. The school provides several educational alternatives some of which don't require any Honors or AP classes.
As for bullying, those bullying idiots are everywhere. Even in the adult workforce. With that in mind, it is absolutely important to teach our children to defend themselves rather than to rely on a school administrator to solve the problem.
We bought a home in this area specifically so that our kids can attend GHCHS and we don't regret it one bit.

This school won back to back academic decathalon. What does that tell you? Staff are AMAZZZINNGGG. Administrators are supportive. Majority of the students are respectful. I sent my child here and let me tell you. I made huge sacrifices as a single mom but it was well worth it. He graduated with high honors and is studying to become a chemical engineer. Best school in Southern California.

I'm in the STEM magnet which is better than the regular school but GHCHS is still a big school that can get cutthroat because some students are stressed out by parents pushing them to go medical school. Some of the teachers are good, love Ms. Kleinberg for English. Some are better at STEM than at teaching and vice versa. There's a lot of tedious homework and regurgitating but maybe that's normal with a lot of AP classes. I wanted to go to the highly gifted magnet but my parents said it was too far.

Asa former student of GHCHS, I wouldn't exactly say that I had an excellent high school experience.
Half of my teachers weren't exactly that intered in their job, the campus aides spent more time talking about games rather than patrol the school and their standards was way higher than the quality of education that they produced. Ontop of all that, they had some pretty cringey faculty members that doesn't seem to know what they are doing, there was this one guy who was sent to after school classes in a different city just because his counselor messed up and gave him 5 extra points by wccident on his gpa and took 2 years to find out, they made him take night classes in the most brutal month of HS (last month of Senior year) the poor guy was running on energy drinks and caffeine pills half of the time.

Granada is a good school overall. However, if you're going to enroll, don't just do GGC aka the regular/CP class program. If you enroll into a focused program, the teachers and classes are much better. Programs: There's GHI for those into History and English, iGranada (online school on different campus on Devonshire), STEM (science, math tech, engineering) Humanitas (digital media), AP Capstone (11-12th graders) , IB (11-12 graders), etc.

I enrolled into GHI and was in it 9th to 10th grade. The English and History teachers I had were phenomenal. No complaints there at all. The math and science teachers were all great as well (honors science 9-10th grade and cp math both years). However, at the end of 10th grade I applied to the IB program and got in, totally worth it. The teachers, support system, etc. are all great. The teachers know what they're doing and are very helpful and knowledgeable. Currently in 2nd semester of 11th grade.

Granada has a LOT of AP classes that are available to take. I took AP Human Geography in 9th grade (scored a 4) with the option of AP Art History but decided against taking the latter (glad I did). In 10th grade, due to being in GHI, I was able to take AP English Language (got a 4 on the test). I also took AP World History (got a 4 on it as well). Currently I'm taking AP Environmental Science, and it will be the last AP I take due to being in IB.

Take all the Honors/AP classes that you think suit you, interest you and that you'd think you would do well in, or at least enjoy. I for one, never did advanced math, since it's my weakest subject and took CP math 9th and 10th grade.

Take advantage of what Granada has to offer, it's variety of academic programs is arguably the best thing about the school.

Also extracurriculars are great. Sports, clubs, academic teams, etc.

This school was said to be above average, according to my experience it was plain average. The only thing exceeding else's expectations was it's standards but not it's academic system (Note: when you enroll in a school you don't really expect this). In this High school, I've seen teachers that really don't care, snobby students and counselors that would make you feel helped but not really (don't even make me talk about the deans and the guys in the carts). I've disliked this school since the first day of freshman year (I really did), although I really dislike this school and most of it's staff, I still had some pleasant experiences in here. Such as my Drivers' Ed teacher (Carlos) he was an amazing instructor, plus he bought us Pizza.

I just read the review about the school being good and that this new student proclaimed that he has never seen a student being cussed at well sorry to tell you this but your obviously a freshman and haven't seen the real side of this school were students are not cared for by the staff. I am a senior and have a lot more experience at this school than most so I have the right to say that you should not enroll your son or daughter in this school.

A teacher gave my child a D on their report card, yet through all of their online grade checking it showed up as low 70%, which I am pretty certain is a C. I contacted counseling and was told they would follow up on it but I never heard back. My child tried to contact their teacher and counselor with no results. The are the largest charter school in the nation. I don't think that is something to brag about. They are so overcrowded that in 9th and 10th grade they have to share small sized lockers with strangers. For a very policed school I think it is silly to have people share lockers.

Well, this is my 2nd year in ghchs and let me say it has it's ups and downs. The teachers are absolutely great, but I've had one teacher who wouldn't even make eye contact while teaching and one teacher who would always get off topic. Other than that, all the other teachers are fantastic. They also have a really great sports team as well. I've never seen bullying and the people who work there seem fairly nice. Now the main problems I would address is the dresscode is too strict, tardy lockout seems unnecessary, and the school is way too crowded! When going to class it's so crowded you get bumped and knocked around. Other than that, I would give this school a 7/10

I just graduated from GHCHS and had a somewhat mixed experience. I was enrolled in a lot of their AP courses and some of the teachers did a good job getting us prepared for the exams but some of the teachers either went overkill on the work and stressed us all out or had us do projects and debates which didn't help at all. One English teacher who assigned us essays after we took the English AP exam, when most teachers realized we had other AP exams to study for this teacher either wasn't aware we were taking other AP exams or didn't care. The counselors and directors were really strict which can be a good thing but being sent to to tardy lock out for being 30 seconds late to class was annoying. The school can also be cold towards students and teachers, they will kick out students if they don't comply with fairly minor rules, and they fired a teacher who's Dad died during the school year. I agree with the comments about bullying just because the staff doesn't see students bullying doesn't mean it's not occurring.

I feel compelled to write a review to address the bad ones on the site. This school paid very close attention to my sons needs. After completing 9th grade, he was recruited for the inaugural Global Business and Finance program. He kept most of the same teachers throughout his time. They were hands on, helped him not fall behind when he broke his leg Sophomore year, and supported him during his tenure. It is a hard school academically. But joining the smaller programs the school offers will provide your student with the attention and support you may want.They offer so many programs that even private schools can't. It is a very good public school.

To the most recent review, actually i wouldn't even call it a review. There is no explanation as to why the school is so bad so i suggest everyone to pay no attention to that comment. GHCHS is definitely the best school in the valley, if not the entire state of California. With an entire buffet of classes to take including Granada exclusive classes such as Autoshop, Woodshop, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, and over 20 selections of AP courses. Granada tends to a students every need, and as many positive comments say, it gives the student every tool necessary to succeed. As far as academics, Granada cannot be topped. Our most recent graduating class had 129 students who maintained a 4.0 and higher GPA throughout all of their years in high school. The year before, there were 126 students to graduate with over a 4.0. Granada is without a doubt, the best school to prepare your student for college, and colleges/universities nationwide are very familiar with Granada. Granada is also host to over 40 different clubs and organizations, so a student will always have activities to participate in around campus. Most of the people I know in this school tell me that they're very stressed out by how hard GHCHS is. I would know too because I go here and I'm in the same scenario. And yes, this school has its fair share of bad teachers, but there are some good exceptions. I understand that GHCHS prepares you for college by giving you a lot of work to simulate a college environment, but what doesn't impress me is how the school doesn't really seem to answer a student's call of need. What I mean is that if a student is stressed out by all the work and their parents keep telling them to do better even though the student is doing the best he or she can, it's the school's fault for almost ignoring that (unless they never knew) and it's also the parents' faults for forgetting that their kid is in one of the toughest high schools in all of California. So, for all parents who plan on sending their kid(s) here - if your child seems to be struggling in this school, don't forget that this is a very hard school, so don't bombard them with anger. Encourage them to do better by helping them, not by scolding them (that will only stress out your child even more). Stress kills faster than getting "bad" grades.

I was delighted at first to send my then senior and my 9th grader there for the first time thinking this seems so impressive but as the weeks rolled on we realized that this was just hype and the teachers really don't care, you are just one of thousands. If you as a parent have a complaint you are welcome to have your two minutes in front of the board but nothing is resolved as they post their decision next week instead of having any debate. Who watches how things are done as LAUSD can't touch the school so there is no outside oversight. If your student wants to shine academically and be on sports teams and leadership, all things that colleges are looking for, I recommend going to a smaller school! Colleges do not care where your kid goes to school.They care about GPA and school involvement as well as SAT/ACT scores. And yes, we did deal with bullying on my freshman son.

I find the attitude of the administration very arrogant and the use of discipline over the top and very draconian. I think sending a student who is tardy to the "naughty room" and miss out on the class is counter-intuitive. For habitually late students, the counselor should instead call in the parents and try to figure out what's happening. Shouldn't the idea is to get the kids into class? This is typical of the way the school thinks. Also, any money they have should be funneled into the classrooms or worthwhile programs (athletics, band, etc.) and not spent on tee shirts and daytime fireworks. I think this school has its priorities all wrong.

The comment below about bullying is 100% true. Both of our daughters went to school here and we ended up having to transfer both of them to other schools. The bullying is absolutely relentless. The administration refuses to do anything to stem it, either. It's just a matter of time until the suicide rate at Granada reflects the abysmal situation here.

The comment below was absolutely false in every way. Granada Hills Charter High School has very rigorous curriculum for all students. You may think that it is a school where you cannot succeed because of all the competition but that is totally false. EVERY SINGLE STUDENT THERE HAS ALL THE TOOLS NEEDED TO SUCCEED. Granada has excellent teachers who CARE about they're students and WANT them to succeed. Ultimately, it is up to the student to be able to thrive at Granada. If the student will not work hard and not do assignments when they are given then no I think you shouldn't go there. Granada is for students who want an excellent education and care about their education. And as for the bullying I HAVE SEEN NONE. Bullying doesn't exist at Granada. Granada is a safe place with kind people who care about their education. In conclusion, Granada is a fantastic school with the absolute best education given.

Attending Granada proved to be both mediocre on academics and absolutely dreadful on bullying. The staff is callous does absolutely nothing to stop or prevent bullying. And they do not take any action whatsoever when a case of bullying is brought to their attention, aside from a slap on the wrist to the offender (or in the vast majority of cases just a verbal warning). Don't send you children there unless you want them to be subject to all of this. The bullying is frequent and quite common and it does not stop at just regular one person to one person bullying (the bullying can become gang backed in some cases). The bathrooms are so dirty you simply cannot use them until after you leave school. Gangs, drugs and even sexual harrassment are also a significant part of the schooling experience at Granada as well.

So basically this is my first year are Granada and let me tell you this so far i hate this school with a passion. Although most people think that Granada is the "best school in the valley" i think otherwise. First of all some teachers shouldn't even be qualified to be teachers in the Mathematics and Science fields(mostly in physics although there is one good teacher). The only teachers that are qualified to be teachers is probably in the English field GHI) and History field. and also the staff is just plain rude and mean. The sports/extracurricular are good its just the staff and choice in some teachers that is upsetting me. Also the school is really strict. I hope i end this school year quick.

Each of my children attended different high schools and Granada Hills was the best by far. With caring and competent teachers, my child was able to thrive. The school was strict about its rules but I didn't see the bullying problems that were prevalent in my other children's schools. I highly recommend this school.
