My daughter attends the magnet program at this school, and from the time she started until now, as she is getting ready to graduate, I have seen a significant improvement in several areas: the cell phone policy, proper uniform enforcement, safety around the school, and efforts to address and control bullying.
I have also noticed a stronger commitment from the principal and the school staff regarding academics. There has been a big improvement in homework expectations and students responsibility toward their school duties.
Although there are still some areas that need improvement, I believe they are heading in the right direction. I would recommend the magnet program.

I went to this school for the 7th grade last year, I would say its not the best school to go to. There was always shootings nearby, even behind the school. Some of the kids even carried weapons around around the school and threatened others. If you dont look or act a certain way theres a high chance you or you kid will be bullied.
The staff here were really supportive, if you were having a problem with other students, teachers, and stuff just in general they are most likely to support you and help you out. Teachers were not the best, most of them are good at teaching and explain well. A couple of the teachers didnt teach you and you were able to be on your phone, call people, watch movies, eat in class, and the teacher would tell you to be quiet so that the other teachers next door wouldnt tell someone else, they would also tell us we couldnt tell another teacher.
I wouldnt go to this school again if I could.

Not overwhelmed with too much homework. Would like to see more projects being assigned.

Its like any school. Some teachers are enthusiastic and excited to teach. Some are not. Luckily our 8th grade teachers, especially Ross Pagett, were outstanding. My son is constantly sharing stories of things he learned in Pagetts class.

Don't write this school off just yet. Ignore the "3" rating. Within the next couple of years this school will easily have a 9 or a 10. Under the new leadership of Richard Ramos this school will be one where people will be vying to get into. Mark my words, this school is on the rise. You will not be sorry for enrolling your child here. This will be the first year of the new Medical Magnet at this middle school. I am only sorry that this school does not go all the way through high school or we would have stayed I have never seen a principal more involved, more committed, more accessible than Richard Ramos. Wildly charasmatic, willing to roll his sleeves up and do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and education of his students. You will always find him on the school grounds engaging with students. He has a way of motivating the students and the staff to be their best. Don't mistake his friendliness as weakness. Ramos is strict and the students know it. His way of leading the school makes the kids want to be better, perform better. This school does not turn away from problems or bullying. They have a zero tolerance policy and are not afraid to get involved. Ramos' enthusiasm is contagious. If you have an opportunity to attend this school, take it. You wont be sorry.

My son had an IEP at this school and met all his goals while attending. Carrie Mederios is an 8th grade counselor and is committed to the success of all the students she oversees. Her goal to prepare the students for 8th grade and beyond is remarkable.

I am forever grateful for the experience we had with this school. It will take a couple of years for the ratings and test scores to go up since this upcoming 2018 -2019 will only be the second year since Richard Ramos took over. Mark my words, this school should not be overlooked. Driving by the school the first thing you will notice is how beautiful the school grounds are. How well kept. There have a huge auditorium separate from the school gym. Which by the way has everything one could want in a gym including good equipment and a massive rock climbing wall. The science department has a large interactive marine aquarium in one of the classrooms. Thats right, an aquarium! With sharks and rays and all kinds of marine life. It is unlike anything I have ever seen.

This school was phenomenal. Our girl found a new meaning for learning. She always looked forward to going and hated her days off away from her teachers and friends.

Is not to much and not to little. Great teachers made it so easy.
Posted: June 7, 2018
They encourage learning and make it fun .
Posted: June 7, 2018
Our girl loved her teachers and the cirruclum so much, she couldn't wait to go to school and hated to leave.
Posted: June 7, 2018
Because it allows teachers to teach effectively.
Posted: June 7, 2018
Our girl started the year with minimal English skills. She came from a country where teachers were more disciplinarian and less education motivators. Northridge totally motivated her to learn through thought challenge.
Posted: June 7, 2018
Our girl was new to the system. Knew no English and had a different religious beliefs,. The students and staff were. More than accommodating and made her feel so welcome.

school doesnt deal with bullying well. Students walk around yelling racial slurs, hitting, threatening others, etc. When reported by staff members, nothing happens.

my child has attended this school for 3yrs. Her 6th and 7th grade years i was satisfied with the teachers and administration. This year the whole dynamic of the school has changed. The staff seems to be very unhappy, school caters to only the hispanic population, theres no disciplinary action, students arent held responsible for their actions, etc. Teachers here are not the problem, its administration and their lack of support. I would not recommend sending your child to this school

administration does not support school staff that try and show and tell students how to be respectful and compassionate to their peers. They give the students the power

This school is and excellent school for all students to learn and become productive members of society. Teachers and other staff are always working to improve the quality of their teaching and ensure that students achieve their best potential.

With the leadership program and our social justice counselor, along with our girls and boys groups (after school), this campus is working continuously to educate young people on good character traits and how that affects their lives in a positive manner.

Administration has a vision to bring the school into the future, with programs aimed at giving students a foothold onwards into high school with progressive learning geared to careers in the new century.
The administration works to keep students on track academically and to keep distractions from affecting them in a negative manner.

Teacher teams work to support students to attain their personal and academic goals, going beyond their standard academic duties to do so.

The entire school community is very motivated to stop any bullying and to promote proper interactions between students. Counselors, administration, support personnel, and teachers are all working together to create a 'healthy' campus where pupils feel at ease and enjoy coming to school. We have a restorative justice counselor who has been doing a wonderful, effective job that contributes to an atmosphere at school that is healthy and supportive of all students.

Teachers are supportive of each other and work together to make the campus a better place. Students seem to enjoy coming to school and to like their electives and teachers. My experience has been an overall positive one.
Posted: April 7, 2018
We have had tutoring after school, and teachers are ready and always willing to be available to any student needing help on their homework.
Posted: April 7, 2018
Teachers are credentialed to teach their assigned subjects, whereas charter schools don't require their teachers to be properly credentialed by the state of California to be an expert on their subject.
Educators at this campus work together and support each other in their goals for their students on various projects and programs.

The Restorative Justice PROGRAM IS VERY EFFECTIVE.

Teachers are starting to use mastery grading, which helps students progress at their own pace.

The Restorative Justice program is outstanding. It helps students adjust to middle school in a healthy way.

Mr. Ramos, the new principal has brought many great programs to the school this year including speech and debate and music.
Posted: April 6, 2018
They understand that students learn differently and in different ways. That's why mastery grading (where students get to retake tests, and show mastery in many ways) is so great!
Posted: April 6, 2018
The school experience is positive. I am excited for the new programs coming to the school next year!
Posted: April 6, 2018
I give it a 10, because it has great programs for the students and very informative parent workshops too.

My niece attended Northridge Middle School for the year she was living with me. If I had it to do all over again, I would not have enrolled her there. The teachers were very nice. I believe the teachers and staff do what they can with the resources and money they have, however, it's not enough. My niece had transferred from an out of state school---an average one at that---and was completely bored and unchallenged at NMS. Part of this is not the schools fault. Most of the student body is ESL. Because of this curriculum pace is is held back considerably. My niece was learning things in 8th grade that her prior school had taught her in 6th. There are little to no extracurriculars. Again, because of lack of funding there are no arts, almost no girls sports, etc. This school is in desperate need of some attention from the state. The children attending here deserve a better education and school-life than they are offered now.
