Amazing School!
I went here from Kindergarten to 4th and every year was wonderful.
The bottom floor is for Preschool-2nd and the top is for 3rd-5th.
All the teachers are good, there were combo classes when I was there and in 3rd, I was in a 3rd-4th combo.
There's in-class music, 5th grade Music, MPR P.E class, rainy day movies in the MPR, and amazing food, including tamales, star cookies, and cupcakes for your b-day! I would always recommend this school for Poway families! Also, AMAZING FIELD TRIPS, 3rd grade Legoland, 4th grade Sacramento flight and stay for a week, Kinder San Diego Safari Park, and more! One sub was kinda harsh and my sister agrees, she also brought her lil' daughter to the class which was cool.

Best regards,
Former Del Sur Student

My son has attended this school since preschool and is now in fifth grade. Each teacher always did something that made me feel as though they genuinely care about my son. For example, in first grade he had tics and his teacher took it upon herself to make note of when they would appear so that she can better understand what brought home on and talked to me about it with a genuine sense of wanting to help. The commitment the teachers have to the individual growth of the students is amazing.

I have kids in 3rd grade and 1st grade. I think the approach to homework is appropriate—both kids have the right amount each night/per week.

Posted: December 29, 2018

My kids both have wonderful teachers who push them, yet are caring.

Posted: December 29, 2018

I have had interactions with both the principal and vice principal and think they are working hard to make the school exceptional.

Posted: December 29, 2018

Top notch. We moved to this area for the school. Kids are safe, being pushed academically, and experiencing a sense of community that is rarely seen this day and age. We love it.

Posted: October 25, 2018

There is a lot fo busy work that is given in terms of homework that lacks any educational value especially in the younger grades.

Posted: October 25, 2018

We have had both very positive experiences and also not so positive experiences. There is a lack of consistency across teachers and many are going through the motions and lack the desire and dedication.

Posted: October 25, 2018

Posted: October 25, 2018

The previous principal was much more effective and created a very high standard as well as an amazing sense of community. The new principal is very teacher centric and not as focused on the students and parents.

Posted: October 25, 2018

This is a tough job for the teachers and the homogeneous approach to everyone student does not allow for that to happen.

Posted: October 25, 2018

We did not experience any issues w bullying.

Posted: October 25, 2018

The school is a good school with some every effective educators who care about the kids, however it's best days are in the past. There are a lot of politics between the administration, PTA, and the foundation that has impacted the school and morale. There are many parents who feel that it is not what it used to be and moving their kids to other nearby or private schools. The school is declining but still a good school.

Wonderful school! When we moved our kids to this school from outside of the area it took them a little while to catch up to there classmates. Del Sur’s academics were so much stronger and more advanced. The teachers are awesome and go above and beyond. Just a great school overall.

This schools looks good from the inside out but lacks high academic focus. This school does not recognize high achieving students with awards but rather focuses on achievements of physical fitness due to the high percentage of whites that attend the school. The new principal does not have a spine to tell the parents they need to live up to the schools policies regarding attendance and on time arrivals. He caters to the affluent parents just to keep his job. So glad we moved our kids to a school that focuses solely on academics.

Used to be very good but it got one step back after the new principle came. Not communicative with parents, Imposing and/or revising rules with not enough pre-survey. Nevertheless, it's still the great school.

Great support and help from teachers and Principal - I'm very happy that my kids are attending this school !

Posted: July 5, 2015

teachers are highly invested into the school and it is very competitive to become a teacher here. each group of teachers for each grade work well together and as a team. My last school it was evident that the teachers had been there too long and were waiting for their pension check.

My son has special needs. The students in the class knew this and were so nice to him. At his other school, he was bullied a lot and pretty much an outcast. This was huge for us.

We LOVE it here. After listening to so many parents rave about Del Sur, we decided we had to move so that our children could attend. We had a horrible experience(s) at our previous school, even though other parents convinced me that the other school was the best blah blah blah. academics are high and the school really gets full effort from the students. I have not heard of any bullying towards my son or to others, but at the old school it was definitely a monthly occurrence that didn't get better. i could go on and on, but you get the picture!

I feel like better than expensive private school. It is one of the blue ribbon school.

We love Del Sur Elementary! This is our fourth year and we couldn't be happier. The teachers, staff, and principal are dedicated to creating an environment that fosters a love of learning and a sense of community. I respect that they are working hard to continually upgrade the use of technology in the school, without sacrificing hands-on learning. Our son has thrived both educationally & socially and LOVES to go to school every day. Also, I have to say, that I appreciate the fact that the principal (Mr. Johnson) is visible...always out among the students: in the hallway, in classrooms, even directing traffic during drop off and pick up! The teachers take turns out there too (wearing neon vests :), handling the crosswalk, and directing cars). This may not seem like a big deal, but I think it models a feeling of community to the students and sends a great message to the kids ("We're here when you need us"). I'm so glad we found Del Sur!

Great school, WONDERFUL, CARING PRINCIPLE, should I say more?... We feel so lucky to come here!

Del Sur Elementary school is a fantastic school in a lovely community. The school staff is making a big effort to get the best out of our kids. Principal Mr. Doug Johnson is very "visible" and 100% devoted to this school. We feel so welcome and blessed to be a student at DSES!

We moved to Del Sur mainly because of this elementary school and we have not been disappointed. The principle, teachers and parent involvement are outstanding and the fact that both of my kids love going to school everyday and love learning is great testimony.

Posted: October 23, 2013

Del Sur Elementary is a wonderful school with great opportunities for the children to explore and grow their talents. I feel so fortunate to be able to have my child going to the school.

Posted: October 23, 2013

Love love love Del Sur! There is such a sense of community and working together to give out children the best childhood they can have. "It takes a village" and this is our village!!!

Posted: October 23, 2013

Fantastic school. It runs great and the staff is awesome! Five extra star to the principal which is always dedicated and passionate about his job and he is LOVED by every single student!

Posted: October 23, 2013

My daughter LOVES going to school here! She went last year to the preschool and this year to the Kindergarten and she has made so many friends, adores her teacher(s), and is already reading just 2 months into the school year! She also gets exposed to art, music, the library, and PE during the day. One extra plus is that they start off slow the first 6 weeks (just 4 1/2 hours per day) before the children go a full day (6 1/2 hours) so they aren't exhausted the first few weeks of school.

Del Sur Elementry SChool the best by far great Principle & teachers for our kids love it

Awesome school and fantastic teachers. The best in Poway unified school district. This was our first year in school in 2nd grade and love it.

Exceptional. That's how I describe Del Sur Elementary. This is our first year at this school. We specifically chose to live in Del Sur because of the schools. The staff, teachers and principal are amazing. The curriculum is challenging. The programs offered to the children are inspired. My daughter came from one of the top schools in SDUSD, and she was never challenged as she is now. We have an incredible PTA and Foundation that help provide beyond what the school district gives us, such as dedicated art and music teachers, teachers for remedial and advanced kids, technology, and more. Mr. Johnson has built an incredible environment for families with superior people and facilities. I am an advocate for STEAM learning, and this school comes the closest to that from what I've seen. I'd love more in the sciences and engineering for our students, but the school provides a lot in the fields of technology, arts and math.

I cannot begin to start with all of the amazing things that happen at DSE. First it starts with top notch teachers, staff and principal. The curriculum is very challenging and seems to be above grade level compared to other schools. Most children live in the community, and the heart of the community is really the school. DSE is among the top in the Poway district on state tests. DSE scored 960 on the API for the 2011-2012 school year. This unique school offers many enrichment classes such as engineering, art, music, and band. There is an incredible foundation that funds a lot of extra's you wouldnt typically get, such as extra teachers, computers, software. This school is top notch in every way.

Everything about this school is incredible. The teachers, principal Johnson, the facilities, the resources, the special events - everything. We have 3 kids at Del Sur, and a fourth about to start, so we have a good feel. And we are thrilled. We live in the Del Sur neighborhood, and will not even consider leaving as long as our kids are elementary school-age. We love the neighborhood as well and would be reluctant to leave anyway, but we definitely will not pull our kids out of this school.

The only way I know del Sur is a great school because my 2 children love going to school. They want to come half an hour early everyday to school, and they always come home with big smiles on their faces. They just moved to this school 2 months ago from UK. I have never seen them so happy and enthusiastic about getting ready going to school and doing homework after school. It must have been something positive about this school. My only wish is that they would do more dedicated sport program, especially for the older children. After all we live in the sunshine state and getting children active should start from an early age.
